Captain Nemo's is indeed a blast from the past - and an awesome one at that.  Walk in and sit in the sofa pit/waiting area replete with enormous 70's geometric chandelier, empty aquarium filled with nautical tchotchkes & double sided fireplace.  Insane.  It's the kind of place you go into and get so enveloped by the cavelike ambience that you lose track of time and come out blinking in the sun.

You won't get long to enjoy the sofa pit, as they are highly efficient at the Captain's.  We're talking career diner waitresses here and they're excellent.  Will you sit in the section with the fanned out highback chairs that make you feel you're in a 70's spy film?  Or near the bank of giant portal windows separating some of the dining areas?

They take your drink order as soon as you sit down.  There's a giant bar, so...they have everything from Bloody Mary to hot cocoa, or feel like a kid again and drink a Shirley Temple.

The nostalgia doesn't end with the decor...the menu is insane retro, true retro, as in hasn't changed in 30 years retro, including  Shrimp Louie and Monte Cristo (club style made with 3 slices of french toast & real roasted turkey, made meh by crappy cheese...but satisfying on a soul food level).

Turkey ala King was on the specials sheet today.  TURKEY A LA KING?  You just don't see that anymore.  My mum got it, and it totally rocked:  real roasted turkey in an excellent light gravy on fluffy biscuits served with a side of peas and a muffin...$8!!!  Seriously, diner mavens take note...GO HERE!  Soups are scratch and the desserts special list has about a dozen items daily.

All day breakfast is solid.  The pancakes remind me of  those from Twin Teepees (RIP), fluffy & moist with just a tad of sweet.  My home girl had the #4 with 2 pancakes, 4 sausage links and scrambled egg - $7.50.  Some breakfast items are "only" available til 11:30...but don't worry about getting pancakes or waffles - they're on the all day hit list.  (thank you, diner fairy!)

Don't go here for chi-chi fancy - not even close.  Go here for great service, solid food at great prices and know you're supporting an original, still truly intact, old school dining establishment.

If you grew up in the 1970s like I did, then any time you go to Captain Nemo's it will be a bit of a trip back in time for you. I think a place like this is best viewed that way. Is the food amazing, amazing, amazing? No, not really. Though, I must say, the pancakes are excellent--but, it's the kind of place where Carly Simon comes wafting through the speakers and you feel like you are 6 again.

The wait-staff is friendly and competent and the food is pretty good for breakfast. The rest of the day, you are taking your chances. However, I always liked to go here because it's a straight shot back to 1981 and they do, in fact, have great pancakes.
