For the short few years that I have lived in Virginia Beach, Captian George's has become a favorite among visiting friends and family.
Let me count the ways...Clam chowder, she-crab soup.  Fresh broiled fish, fried shrimp and scallops.  Why not try some of my favorite, oysters Rockefeller, before indulging in what this buffet really has to offer...crab legs.  And we can't forget to mention the bbq ribs and the prime rib.  And many, many others that I don't have the time to mention.
I'll come back to Earth for just a moment to acknowledge that this IS a buffet.  It is mass-produced food.  And it is somewhat pricey @ $30+ per person after drinks.
Reality check aside, the food is very good and the service is excellent.   I'll continue to bring my friends and family here because Captain George's continues to produce mass quantities of great food.

I had the biggest food baby of my LIFE after eating at Captain George's. Seriously I wanted to crawl under a rock and die...in a good way.

The amount of food in their buffet should be illegal in all fifty states and Guam. I don't do buffets but I read that Captain George's is the buffet to visit while down in Va. Beach.

We were seated promptly and the restaurant was crowded. Almost every table was full and we were herded like cattle to the back of the restaurant. Our server was extremely nice and he was on point with drinks and clearing the table.

The fruity alcoholic drinks with the light-up ice cubes are watered down and lame. I wish I would have not been roped into one. After one, I had a glass of their Reisling. Their wine list is pretty impressive for a buffet.

I enjoyed the soft shell crabs the best. Seriously I ate about ten of them. There was a dish called Norfolk delight, that was full of seafood in a buttery sauce that was delicious. There was just so much of everything! I don't know how people stay for two hours (that is their max time limit) as I was rubbing my food baby after hour one and praying for my bed. Only downside that the desserts looked meh but I didn't taste them.

Even though the restaurant was packed, there was hardly any lines at the buffet. It was actually an enjoyable dinner and I was past Thanksgiving full, which a feat in itself.

Beware of the timeshare people as you come and leave. They weren't pushy but if you don't want to hear their schmiel, cut the conversation in the bud in under ten seconds.

Unlimited seafood? No. Unlimited stuffed mushrooms? YES! I knew that Captain George's wasn't going to offer unlimited lobster, so what really drew me to this place was the unlimited stuffed mushrooms. Pretty lame...sure, but that's just me.

Don't get me wrong...I LOVE SEAFOOD but what I would really love is if they had unlimited lobster. This of course had everthing from king crab legs, clams, oysters, crawfish and other things you would expect from a seafood buffet and other simpler sides such as mac and cheese, soups and salads. They also had ribs, which was really really good according to my boyfriend. In fact, he said it was the best thing there.

The food itself was just OK. I wasn't too fond of the crawfish, which actually got me pretty excited, but it was very muddy tasting. Because of this I only had one...it was sorta sickening to tell you the truth. King crab legs are king crab legs...nothing special. The "she-crab soup" was pretty interesting...it was very creamy, although it tasted much like clam chowder minus the potatoes. The rest of the food was ok. It really would have been nice if they would at least sell lobster on the side...but I guess not.

The only advice I could give to anyone who would wish to eat here is to try everything once and a small portion of it.

Spent the last week in Virginia Beach, so I had the opportunity to come here again.  We'd been driving for several hours and hadn't had anything to really eat all day, so a buffet seemed to be a good idea and we knew we wanted to come back to Captain George's.  I think I'd been building it up in my head since the last time I was here (which, apparently was 5 years ago... time flies...).  Building it up, or maybe it was a lot easier to impress me when I was 18.

The buffet is still giant (one of the biggest I've ever been to) and the crab legs were a lot better than other places in the area.  We still experienced food comas afterwards.  But our waiter (or, rather, our duo of waiters) this time weren't as great.  The desserts weren't that wonderful.  And the other people at the buffet seemed to be a bit trashier this time.

I ate several clusters of crab legs, so I probably got my $28.99 worth.  I was so full that I attempted to sneeze when we got out of the restaurant and my stomach wouldn't let me (probably not a good sign).

Bottom line, if you're going to go to a buffet in the area, this one is probably still one of the best choices.

I have been going to this restaurant for years. Love the all you can eat King Crab legs!! That alone is worth the trip to Captain Georges.
But the most recent visit it was so crowded, even though getting seated pretty quickly with long lines, getting to the buffet line was a dodge game. A bit overcrowding. Seems like noone orders off the menu. Everyone does the buffet.
And the restaurant is not as 'high-end' as I remember it being the first time I went. Some of the hot foods weren't great. The desserts so-so.
All in all its a pretty good value for your money.

It's probably the best seafood buffet I've been to. The buffet is $28.99 but unlike a lot of other seafood buffets, they actually have blue crabs. Most of the time, the ones I've been to only have king crabs and other seafood, but no blue crabs which I love love love! Oh and if you want non-alcoholic drinks like sweet tea (unlimited), it's an extra $2.29.
I also tried their king crab legs, shrimp, clams, mussels, crawfish, both fried and steamed scallops, fried soft shell crabs, roll (the best rolls ever!), banana pudding, cherry cheesecake, and sweet tea.. all of which are delish! YUM!
I wish I can say I tried the other stuff they had like salmon, some type of white fish, and assorted side dishes such as mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, salads, and the like... but I was on a mission to just eat mostly blue crabs. I fulfilled that mission.. I think I ate about 8 or 9, along with what I listed above... The blue crabs were juicy and "meaty" and writing about it makes my mouth water. So I will stop there =)
The service was wonderful. My glass of sweet tea was never empty, and our server came every 10 minutes or so to clear our "mess" of crab shells and whatever else we put in the "dirty plate." I enjoyed myself immensely and would definitely go here again.
Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend any other seafood places in VA beach until proven otherwise. YUM!

Quantity over quality!  Went there for crab legs and were not disappointed!  Very large place and was packed for a Thursday nite.  A lot of fried seafood and dessert.  Had a selection of fish and shellfish. Second to the crab legs was the prime rib.  Dinner for two @$75 for the amount of food was worth it.

I was here with my bf this past weekend. When we got here around 7:30 this place was pack but the wait wasn't that bad for parties 4 and under, so we got a sit after 20 min. But I have to say that it would have been nice for the host or hostess would tell us that we could just go get food and then find a table where we want to sit at.   The place is one of much nicer buffet that I have been to and the service of the waiter we had was excellent. He came to clear our plates continuously and was easy to find when we need him even though the place was pack like crazy. The food was decent but nothing really special.I have to say though that I didn't like anything that wasn't fried or steam. The fish was yuck, didn't even bother after one bite. I have to say that the dessert wasn't that great either. For the price we paid I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with the quality of the food. I would rather have gone somewhere else to have seafood because for $70 without tip for 2 ppl is really not worth it at all.

Don't go here. It's a tourist trap. It's the same fried seafood menu they probably been serving since they opened and they have been around for awhile. The desert hasn't changed either. Two hour limit to eat, or you're charged again. Over priced for what you get.  It's a big buffet but the quality is not great, a lot of it is over cooked.  Better places to go if you want to eat sea food or for a buffet. Don't believe the hype. It's only good just to experience it once.

This place has been a favorite of my family for 15+ yrs. You definitely get your moneys worth with all the variety on the buffet. And you usually never have to wait for seating, no matter how crowded it is. The place is huge!!

Mmmm....*daydreaming of their cajun style crawfish*

I love Captain George's. It's a buffet so any reviews on decor and ambiance is out the window. It's all about the food.

This place is known for the all-you-can-eat seafood, so naturally I will be raving about the seafood, although there are other varieties of food here. Their seafood seems to always be fresh when I go. I love the crab legs and especially love, love, love the crawfish, I can sit there all day eating plates of it!

The wait is kind of long (around 30 minutes) no matter what day of the week I go. There are a lot of families dining with small children so it can become chaotic but the food definitely makes up for it.

Very crowded, and I think the previous reviewer is correct w/ the tourist trap :-)  Though I do know locals who go there.  If you love seafood, and want to pay only $28 or so for unlimited crab legs, softshell crabs and shrimp and crayfish, then this is the place to go.
I love crab legs, but other than that it's not my favourite restaurant.  I prefer non-buffet type deals, but as far as buffet goes, this is the generic, same deserts, same side dishes, just the extra seafood.
I won't be a regular after my first visit there, but if you need good tasting crab legs fresh, this is your place.

My review is based on the Pungo location.

Two words about this joint: seafood + buffet. If you like either you're good, if you love both you're golden.  Gluttony awaits once you pass the front door.  Good to visit once in a lifetime.

The Laskin road location is a tourist trap, many resort hotels on the strip recommend Cpt George's. For a less crowded gut-busting gastronomic experience, drive a little further to the Pungo location.  Better yet, hop your fat ass on a bike and ride there.  Then you wouldn't feel guilty eating there.

As buffets go, this place rocks.  The selection is amazing and the price is good for what you get.

The downside is that a plce like this really allows the ongoing weight problem in the U.S. to continue unabated.

Once you are done with all the main courses there is also a massive desert bar - just in case you did not consume enough calories at the buffet line.

This location is usually jammed- there is another out in Pungo that is more scenic and mush less crowded.

Not for people who enjoy and appreciate local flavor. Got hauled here as part of an office off-site - thus there was no way to politely disengage. I got food poisoning (first time and only in my life) from the deviled crab. Will only entertain serious recommendations from the locals after this "dining" experience....Blech.

Like I always say, I hate buffets but this one is an exception (other exception is minado in nyc.) All I can say is if you have all you can eat soft shell crab, juicy prime rib, bbq rib and 20 desert selections including flan, rice pudding and carrott cake then I'm there. The crowd and decor ofcourse can be less then desirable but you're eating so much you don't even notice.

This place is horrible!  It's a total tourist trap!  I do not know of a single local who will go here.  The seafood is frozen, fried and mass produced.  Why anyone would stand in line for hours to get food off of a buffet that all these nasty peole are breathing all over is beyond me.  I get sick to my stomach just driving by the place.  Have I actually had a meal here?  Yes, my parents just had to go here when they came down to visit.  The idea of stuffing one's face with a disgusting amount of mass produced seafood just doesn't appeal to me.  But, obviously, seeing the lines to get into this place, I'm in the minority.  I guess if you are looking for quantity, not quality, this is the place to go.

we were on vacation in virginia beach and captain george's was recommended by a coworker.  the place was packed for dinner, but we got a table for 2 right away.  bottles of wine were 30+, but we got one anyway.  there is a pretty big selection of seafood, some of which probably isn't the best quality, but deep fried food is always delicious, so i can't complain too much.  my boyfriend had crab legs for the first time and loved them, so for $30/person unlimited crab legs and every other food is a pretty good deal.

i liked the desserts too, lots of yummy chocolate cakes and what not.  the place is probably a little overpriced for the food quality, but everything was good and we enjoyed our dinner a lot!

I hate buffet restaurants but this one wasn't too bad. They have a ton of seafood, I ate my money's worth in shrimp. Most people go for the crab legs. It's not that great of a date place since it's kinda loud, but if you want to eat a ton of seafood, go for it.
