Review from Mari M.
This is my girlfriend's favorite Italian place so we came here for dinner.
I don't come to Stamford often but I was surprised to be greeted by a waiter who looked like he's from the Jersey Shore. But I soon noticed that not just the owner but a lot of people working there were Italian. Plus it's my Italian friend's go to restaurant so I knew I'll be getting the real thing.
I wasn't disappointed. We got the Fried Rice ball, Pasta Funghi and Capriccio Salad. They were all excellent. The pasta was perfect and the mushroom in it was delicious. The salad portion was big and the dressing was light and just right. I've never had fried rice balls but I'll have to look for it at Italian restaurants now. I understand why my friend said it's light Italian, the food was delicious but nothing overly heavy greasy or creamy.
Street parking or if you don't find street parking there's a parking lot right in the back.
Went to Volta Gelateria ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) for dessert. They are owned by the same owner so you can order the same thing at Capriccio too but we liked going across the street for change of scenery.Listed in: Day trips from NYC, Stamford CT

My friend and I had gone here at the recommendation of someone we knew. We were seated right away, which we thought was great given that it was a Saturday night at 8pm. The menu isn't very large for dinner but it looked adequate enough. We ordered the antipasto and a meal each with a glass of red wine. The antipasto had listed speck, which neither of us had heard of before, so we asked the young waiter what it was. He struggled to find the right words with "it's uhhhh, it's like uhhh, it's, it's....do you want me to ask the kitchen?" We told him it wasn't that big a deal, we just wanted to know what it was. Turns out it's a type of prosciutto. We had each taken a little of the antipasto and begun to eat when I saw what looked like a maggot in the roasted red pepper strips on my plate. We called the waiter over who immediately took it away and offered us something else. We got the fried calamari and don't ask me why we stayed - I have no idea how we still had an appetite after that. The calamari was fine, nothing to rave about.
For dinner, I had a thin breaded chicken cutlet served w/cold, fresh arugula, tomato and mozzarella, which was also fine, nothing fantastic. There wasn't any sauce on the plate, just dry chicken. My friend had the salmon served w/spinach. We shared the Nutella crepe dessert and were disappointed that the crepes were not your "usual" style crepe but a chewy, doughy substitute.
While we waited 25 minutes to flag someone down to get the check (at this point it was 10:45 and we were 1 of 3 tables left dining outside), my friend went to the restroom. She said it was like a bus station bathroom and if I needed to go, I had better bring a napkin. So, all in all, this place sucked. The antipasto was not taken off the check, nor the calamari put in its place and at that point we just wanted out of there. We figured they had to be similar in price anyhow. Turns out the antipasto was $14, the calamari was $11. Not a big deal but just another annoying thing to point out that should have been taken care of as soon as we sent it back.
The food was "eh", the service was "eh" and with all the other amazing Italian restaurants in that area, I won't be dining here again. -

sloooow service at lunch. i was the first and only customer and what should've been a quick lunch took an hour. i wouldn't mind IF i was IN italy... but i'm not. it's america and most ppl there will be on their lunch hour.
aside from that, the servers were very nice. the food was decent. the fresh mozz/caprese salad was tasty. some of the tomatoes were white and hard though. the hot sandwich i ordered was ok. not much flavor but the thinly sliced beef wasn't chewy, which was surprising.
all in all, a good place. they just need to bring on a little hussle during the lunch hour. -

Simple eats, fresh food, but slow service... it's an old faithful in Stamford. Lunch food is very good from Panini's, to pizza's, to salads, to more filling entree's. The owner is from Italy, and I believe he does a great job in bringing the authentic Italian cuisine to the heart of downtown Stamford. Try the Bruschetta pizza- Pomodoro one happens to be my favorite especially in the summer time because it's just the thin pizza crust topped with a delicious cold tomato bruschetta. They also have full liquor options if you want to go for an easy dinner before a movie. Stroll across the street to their new restaurant Volta for the most amazing gelato's and crepes.

One of my very first meals with my current boyfriend was here so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Carpaccio, caprese, some panini's, gin & tonics, prosecco, great ambiance, outdoor seating, good people watching, only one star off because everything went smoothly until the end of our meal when it took abnormally long to get our check, pay, etc. -

I've been to Capriccio Cafe for lunch a few times in the past couple of years and have more or less enjoyed myself on each occasion. The extensive outdoor seating is fabulous on a summer afternoon and the sandwiches and flatbreads are tasty and fairly-priced, making the restaurant a good choice for a casual lunch date.
One of the nicest things about Capriccio is the outdoor seating it offers: the sidewalk in front of the restaurant is full of ~30 tables, most of which are shaded by large umbrellas. I've eaten inside at Capriccio once and would definitely recommend sitting outdoors as long as the weather permits. In fact, I'd go so far as to suggest trying a different place for lunch if inside is the only option--the space inside is quite small and cramped and service took a lot longer for the indoor tables.
Speaking of service... I've found it to be only okay. The manager/owner has a visible presence, which is nice to see; however, my experience with the waiters has been spotty. Service can get quite slow and I've found the enthusiasm of the staff to be somewhat lacking. Furthermore, the dishes do feel a bit "thrown together." All three times I've eaten at Capriccio, I've been served sandwiches whose various components have been unevenly distributed. On the bright side of things, the waiter we had yesterday was more attentive that I've experienced in the past.
The menu has a mix of salads, paninis, flatbread sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, and some Italian-style entrees. Personally, I tend to stick with the sandwiches: the list of options is nice and long, the combinations range from classic to creative, and the price is right (most are $8 or less). The Via Pola panini is one nice choice: the combination of goat cheese, portabella, sundried tomato, and grilled chicken is great (although the chicken was a touch dry). My boyfriend also enjoyed his shrimp and avocado panini on our most recent visit, while I was quite happy with my grilled chicken, smoked mozzarella, avocado, and sundried tomato pesto flatbread (piadine).
To drink, Capriccio offers a nice selection of special cocktails--sangrias (I really want to try the white peach on my next trip), prosecco-based beverages, and martinis--as well as a smallish wine list. My most recent visit, I ordered an iced coffee. While I was less-than-thrilled that the cream came out in a dishwasher-hot metal pitcher, the coffee had a nice taste to it, as one would hope at a Euro-Italian type cafe. -

I came here the other night (and many other times between this and my last review) with a date and decided that I've been won over.
He had the pork chop with cherry peppers and roasted baby potatoes in a rosemary-balsamic reduction sauce. I had the rigatoni alla vodka, which is nothing special to look at but I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous so I went with an old standard. By the way, their menu is huge.
Here was the winner, though: zucchini chips. "Chips" don't sound appetizing to me at an Italian cafe but my date and I agreed they are a must-try. They're not dry or soggy; perfectly executed. The mountain of chips (more than enough for 4) is served with homemade marinara.
Yes, the service tends to lag towards the end of the meal, so be aware if this is a concern at lunch. But whether it's because they don't want to rush you or the waiters are just serving too many tables, I don't seem to care. It sort of adds to the charm.
If I had to pick one thing Capriccio does exceptionally well it's the consistency of their food down to the portion size and distribution of ingredients. It's also beautifully prepared. Basically, Capriccio, like any metropolitan Italian, has style and they flaunt it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Stamford, CT
Went here during Bandapalooza earlier this month and was really unimpressed. I don't know if they don't usually have outdoor seating, but their umbrellas and many tables would suggest otherwise. For a restaurant that charges an average of $15 per dish (including salads and very simple pasta dishes), I was really surprised by the lack of quality... everything.
Service: was ridiculously slow. Our appetizers took 45 minutes to be served. I'm not sure our waiter spoke English, and he never came to refill our drinks until we chased him down. There were a TON of waiters there that day, most of them just standing around. The guy who payed for our group had to get up to find the waiter to get the check.
Presentation: I know that the restaurant industry has small margins, but throw-away plastic cups and condiment cups and paper napkins at an upscale restaurant? Less than ideal for outdoor seating on a breezy day. When we finished our drinks, we hand to keep one hand on our cups to keep them from blowing away because the waiter never came to refill them!
Food: my colleagues did seem to enjoy their food, but they're Stamford natives, so I'm not sure I trust their judgment anymore. I got the Fettuccine ai Funghi but it was very salty and tasted oddly like a pizza. The flavors were just really at odds with each other -- the mushrooms tasted the same as everything else in the dish.
Maybe Capriccio should get another star for location or being a good place to just people-watch, but everything else about the experience was so unpleasant, I wouldn't return. -
Review from Annie R.
So this place was tasty and fresh, I think I would have done more of a take out type of thing at this place, the service was very slow and the space is a bit awkward. The pesto was homemade and a highlight, if you have 2 hours for lunch go for it!

I believe that the only thing that this restaurant can offer to a customer is LOCATION! The service is terrible slow. the food is marginal, the prices are a little high for what you get and the menu is a limited. I believe people love to come to this place because they want to be seen.

Ugh, I have never felt so discriminated in my life.
A couple days before I had to leave to go back to San Francisco, my friend wanted to drive me to CT to check it out. I'm always up for adventures!
I also heard CT is super friendly and liberal. Correct me if I'm wrong? Because apparently I was wrong. I thought it would be like predominantly white too. Apparently I was wrong about that.
It's pretty much hispanic central. Oh well, at least I know some spanish, like Cono, yo quiero empanada, puta. Yo quiero grande teta y culo
uhh.... at least my friend taught me this.
Anyway, it's 4pm, we're starved, I wanted italian. Actually I was pretty hungry so I didn't care at this point. We decided, this is a cute little cafe... let's see what they have.
Hot girl works here, geez her eyes and her accent are like BAM.
But the service here is the shittiest I've ever dealt with.
This dude comes up to us and points at a menu and is like, "yeah. so..ahem" (expecting us to read what's off the Specials menu without telling us)
We're like okay .. anyway my friend got pizza and I had salmon pasta.
Disgusting. They both tasted sour and they looked like left over from a few days prior or something. Very little pasta (actually there was rarely any) for the price (most items were about $14-15). It was cold too !!
I was so disappointed. When I asked for water, they made us wait so long, and they were all completely unfriendly to us. Received a lot of stares and we felt very unwelcomed.
Other people's food looked really good so we were kind of anticipating our food. We were not happy that ours looked like shit compared to theirs'. Then another couple came in to sit down.
They had bottle service, friendly greetings, AND their pasta was like 6x bigger in proportion than mine!! FUCK!
What a rip-off!! it was the same exact one as mine. Now please tell me there isn't something going on here.
Whatever, we just paid and walked out. They didn't even give us the "thank you/goodbye/have a nice day" talk. We just got glares on our way out.
1 star for the hot girl, she looks hot. But fuck her personality. -

Throw on some shades. Get some sangria. Order a salad. Maybe a thin crust. Espresso to close it out. Lots of great people watching. Not many better spots for a summer lunch or late afternoon boozing.

Capriccio is decent - it's a fun place to sit outside on a nice summer evening and enjoy some people watching. I have tried a few of the pizzas and the crab cakes were pretty delicious. Overall, it's a bit pricey for what it is and the service is slower than it should be but that's why I gave it 3 stars.

Consistently good place to grab Italian cafe food and wine while seated outdoors. Service can be inconsistent but great people watching, decent food at affordable prices makes this a go to spot when the weather is great. Always packed during the summer! I typically get one of the salads on a thin crust pizza bread.

It's always alive at Capriccio. I'll be driving home on a Monday night at 11:00 pm...and there are no empty seats.
You really feel like you're transported to a cafe in Italy with the wire table & chairs, vast outdoor seating and wait staff with accents. The food is pretty good there with lots of simple Italian options, such as salads, paninis, pizzas and salad pizzas, but they also offer a number of entrees as well.
Because it's such a happening place you have to expect the following: it will be crowded, it will be loud, your food may take a while, you'll have a few different waiters, and you'll be right on top of the table next to you. But if you're looking for a place like this, then you should be fine.
The food is good, prices aren't too pricey for Stamford Italian, it's casual and great for sitting outside (even with space heaters when it starts to get cool out). Go in with the right expectations and you can come away enjoying it. -

Love their Salmone salad. It comes with fresh "lox" on top of the salad. It is delicious! They also have a fresh lox pizza that has avocado. Try their shrimp panini as well. You can't go wrong!

Hi All,
So this place is a Euro-style restaurant. What does that mean? Small over priced dishes. People go here for one main reason- atmosphere. This is a nice place to go when you are not really hungry and the weather is nice- with great outdoor seating (if you can avoid the huge lines for the outdoor seating). The service is good- always appreciate the wait staff. I have been here a dozen or more times.
I really like their salads- which is the best option on the menu. Their pizza is average at best, their sandwiches are more like appetizers (the Euro-style thing). And the appetizers are decent- I like the Calamari and really small crab cakes. And all of these that i mentioned are over priced for the portions.
I would say that if you want a light late dinner, and have a little extra in your budget, and the weather is nice, then this place is recommended. But remove one of these options...then go somewhere else.

Been to Capriccio's twice now and the food is definitely good, but I don't know if I would say "great". The biggest reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is the lack of service. Our waiter (dark haired guy with a Mohawk) seemed like he couldn't care less about being there and was anxious to get us out, even though when we first arrived we were the only table there?
I ordered the "Gravina" pizza, I asked them to add prosciutto to it, no problem. The dish was very pretty but while the crust was flavorful, it seemed a bit on the stale side, not sure why. The toppings (Arugula, Cannelloni Beans, Tomato & Goat Cheese) were all very fresh. It's a very decent sized pizza, not enough to share, but definitely more than enough for one person to eat as a meal. My cousin had the Parmigiana Pizza with the breaded chicken. She said it wasn't the best, but still alright.
Zucchini Chips for an appetizer. These I would say were great. Thinly sliced ribbon cut zucchini very lightly fried served with Marinara on the side. Very nicely done.
For dessert we had the Nutella Crepes. Now in my opinion you can add Nutella to anything and it will be delicious, but that being said the "Crepes" were basically raw and impossible to cut through. I would pass on this dessert next time, however if they could get the crepe part right it would probably be delicious.
Overall I'm giving them 3 stars to be fair since I wasn't completely blown away but the food is definitely on a solid level of good, and the price seemed semi- reasonable. Appetizer, 2 pizzas and dessert and we were out of there for about $55 with tip.
If you're looking for conventional Italian this isn't your place, but if you're in the mood for something light with a European style to it, I'd say give them a try. I'd go back, but not before I tried someplace else first. -

This was my third time and my last . The first time I was there they brought out the wrong drinks and the food took some time . The time after that I went with my wife and son and they forgot to put in my son's order and took 40 min to get his plate out . We waited and our food was cold which they could care less about . This last time I was there they forgot my order which took 1 hour ( not busy with 6 tables occupied) and brought out the wrong main for 2 of the people I was there with .. There food is good but there service is by far the worse and thats with the only waiter that speaks english . -

Perfect outdoor cafe for sitting in the sun and people watching!
I've been here twice now with a friend the first time before going shopping during the summer... then during indian summer in early fall with my bf and his mom. It was fun both times.
I've had paninis from there, their caesar salad, their calamari and their cappucino's and some desserts. I have to say that it as delicious every time... nothing extraordinary but just good ol' italian food. They're very accomodating and the service isnt stellar but its decent.
We had no complaints...the prices could be slightly tweaked to the lesser end but otherwise a fun cafe that everyone should visit at least once... the variety of food is quite extensive too. -

What a cute little outdoor cafe! They serve excellent mimosas, perfect for a hot muggy day like today. I also had the hot flat bread, topped with prosciutto, arugula, and fresh grated parmesan and olive oil & balsamic vinaigrette sprinkled on top. Yumo, as Rachel would say.
An extra star for all the hot Italian drama that ensued. Fighting over shifts, the manager/owner yelling at staff for not setting up the tables fast enough, serving cold coffee, mixing up drink orders. I sat inside cuz it was humid as hell and frankly I wanted the A/C to keep my mimosas chilled, little did I know it would be so entertaining. -

Great place to hang out in the evening during the summer. Lots of people watching from the tables on the street. Very european feel, though that could have been from all the languages I heard while I was there.
The sandwiches are simple, not particularly standout. But this place is open late, so gets another point for that. I enjoyed the steak and salad dinner one night too, but don't think you'll get a choice of rare or medium. It's just simple. -

I love going to this place in the summer when you can sit outside. The atmosphere is quite nice, and it's one of the only places in Stamford like it.
Their menu is simple--paninis, pizzas, pasta, Italian toast, and salad. The ingredients are simple but yummy--a lot of goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, prosciutto, mushrooms, etc. Everything is quite light and fresh.
The only downside is that the food takes a bit longer to come out. -

Great in the summer for the outdoor seating. White peach sangria is addicting. Mia salad and zucchini chips are my go-to. Almost everything I've had here is great, but the only reason why I'm giving 4 stars is because of the service.Overall, good food & good atmosphere especially in the summer!

Since my girlfriend used to live in Stamford, I'd take the Metro North train a decent amount from GCT to visit her in Stamford. On one particular sunny afternoon during the spring of '07 when I didn't have school and she had taken the day off, we went to CC. As the first reviewer already mentioned, the best part of this cafe is the outdoor seating area. On such a nice day, it was very nice to have a nice and quiet lunch together outside.
This Italian-inspired cafe has a pretty extensive menu. We both decided to order paninis, and they were delicious. Then, to cleanse our palate, we both shared a sorbet (don't recall which flavor), which was palate friendly.
Overall, we certainly enjoyed our eating experience in the spacious outdoor seating area, and do recommend that Stamford dwellers/visitors visit this quaint cafe. -

This is such a lovely place for a casual lunch or dinner.
Simple ingredients, simple flavor, yet well prepared, you could taste love and experience it in their food.
My favorite on their menu would be their pasta dishes. I tried almost all of them, and I just loved all of them. So well done: Simple and delicious! Try their salads in the summer. Order some grilled calamari if you only want something small.
Their dessert is absolutely delicious, such as cream brulee, mixed berries custard... They are much better than some of those in higher end restaurants.
I love that place. It's so dear to my heart. The owner is always there to say hi to his regulars. Sometimes you get to see him with his group of friends and family at a large table hanging out. It's just a very nice spot to hang out at. -

Capriccio's is definitely the only authentic Italian, outdoor, cafe in Stamford. The food is as close as anyone has gotten to real Italian food. Anyone who has lived or visited Italy would recognize the atmosphere and food as being similar to a Tuscan cafe/restaurant. I have never had a bad meal here whether I'm ordering a a sandwich, a pizza (which is thin crust like most real Italian pizza), or a pasta dish. Their coffees are excellent and their deserts are very good. While the gelato is good, it is different from what you are served in Italy (I've never been able to find REAL gelato in America).
The service is unfortunately also like Italy. It's extremely slow. In Italy it is not uncommon to spend 2-3 hours in a restaurant waiting for service, food, deserts, the check and so forth. Expect to hang out for a good hour to two hours depending on how busy it is. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff is friendly but the food comes out pretty slowly. -

Capriccio is a really cute, authentic Italian place. I love the modern look and the kitchen gadgets mounted on the walls. And the sweet cute Italian owner who sometimes will come by and say hello just tops it off! I've only had lunch here so far, and it's definitely a place you want to go for a longer Friday lunch so you can thoroughly enjoy it (it tends to be a little slow too). I had the orechiette with sausage, which was very good, but was disappointed by the rosemary potatoes which were just kind of baked potatoes with a sprig of rosemary on top (very disappointed by that ). But overall still liked it and I want to come back for dinner some time, hopefully that will give Capriccio another star.

Great Food. Great Service and an owner who knows everyone even when he really doesn't. Its such a great place just hopefully someday even better if lower Bedford Street would be closed to traffic permanently. How much fun is it on a Saturday night to sit outside people watching while eating great pizzas, piadine or panini sandwiches or even what I had last night was seared Ahi Tuna over white beans. Great texture and an awesome portion for $12.00. They now offer small plates (like Tapas) including a nice seafood salad for $7.00. Where else can you sit outside under an umbrella for great conversation, background music and get a chance to not be rushed to give up your table. One of Stamford's Best and perhaps the second best outdoor seating restaurant in Fairfield County to Splash of course.

Some of the best Italian lunch food I've ever had. After trying this out on Sunday, I kept coming back every day for lunch through the week. (I live in California.) The tuna piadine was my repeat favorite. I also tried the zuccinni chips, which were small zuccinni sliced thin, then thrown into a potato-starch batter, then fried. De-licious.

Capriccio is especially popular right now (summer time). With more outdoor tables than any nearby competitor and a Vespa too. The location and the ambience is a big part of the draw here. As for the dining, the food includes pasta, sandwiches, salad, small pizzas, etc. It is good food, but nothing worth a detour. But if you are in the area, want to eat outdoors and enjoy a simple meal, Capriccio is a good bet in downtown Stamford.

Absolutely terrific Italian food in the heart of Stamford. Their paninis are first rate and the delicious thin crust pizza is fantastic. I have had two meals in the outdoor seating area. It is one of the best places in Stamford to people watch in my opinion. The food here is pretty top notch. For lunch I had a sandwich with chicken, fresh mozzarella, pesto and tomato...very tasty. For dinner I had a chicken breast lightly fried and served with tomatoes and a small salad, again very delicious. The combination of good service, good food, good location (30 sec from where I live) and good people watching has paid off, I will be frequenting Capriccio.

I thought Capriccio had a lot of potential, but the service really held it back. The outdoor seating was great (especially given the June heat wave that was going on when I went), and the food was above average. Unfortunately it felt like our server was waiting for the first time, or was swamped and had too many tables. 2 stars for now, although if I ever go back I wouldn't rule out a bump up. If you go, try the buffalo calamari.
