cappys is a decent breakfast place. real popular on the weekends.
they have some sort of skillet thats pretty good. definitely dont go crazy about this place.
I was visiting a good friend in Newport Beach and we decided to go to Cappy's for brunch after she raved about how delicious the breakfast was.
Since it was around 2, I opted for the lunch menu instead... and regretted it almost immediately. I ordered the tostada salad. Pretty hard to mess up, right? Wrong. It was pretty bland and had very little flavor. Not really sure what they could have done better. Maybe spruce it up with better salsa? Better beans? More cheese? Guacamole/sour cream? Who knows?
My friend ordered the french toast, which she had been raving about. In all fairness, the french toast was quite good! I eagerly accepted her offer for a taste... and then continued to greedily accept all subsequent offers. Poor girl - this little piggy probably devoured 1/2 her order.
Moral of the story: Order off the breakfast menu and avoid the tostada salad unless you're not much of a flavor person.
I should have known...
Been to this places ages ago and liked it enough. My parents went last month and their service and food were so bad the manager gave them a free breakfast gift cert, which they gave to me. Thanks?
Slow service, no refills, wrong order... twice. Food was mediocre and drab. Nothing you can't get for half the price at Dennys.
I was a good little customer and showed my gift cert to the waitress as soon as we were seated. At check time the manager comes and tells us he "took care of the food for us." Um no, I gave you a gift cert. He charged us for our orange juice, 2 adults and a baby, $18 freaking dollars!? They charged full price on each of the 1 refill each my hubby and I wrestled from our server. Unbefreakingleavable!
Cappys? More like Crappys... I left with a greasy stomach and a chip on my shoulder...
A friend and I came here one time when we were slightly desperate to find breakfast in Newport that wasn't a chain. Kind of a mistake, since I regretted not hitting up an iHop the second I left this place.
This place has a unique combination that doesn't really make sense to me. Conveniently located next to PCH, bad food, horrible service, weird setup, bland menu. I mean, I was still in OC right?
The food was mediocre and lame, basically anything I can find in a mom n pop shop. There was really nothing special (also they don't serve cafe americano...and didn't know what it was. Big Hint: when it starts with cafe...most likely coffee). The service was uneducated, uninspired, slightly stupid, and unfriendly. FYI, that was me being nice.
The walls are painted with this...child like oceanic crack dream which seems cute at first, but when you combine it with the fact that everything else here sucks, just...no. NONONO.
Parking here sucks as well. I just do not recommend this place at all. It's appropriate that me and my friend call this place "Crappy's Cafe"...although I could've thought of something original. I'm sure half of Newport calls it Crappy's =P
I have family in Newport, and we always go to Cappy's when I visit them.
I'm not sure why some of the other reviewers have said such negative things about the place... I have never had anything but excellent service there, and the food is a fantastic deal for the price (love the big portions!). It's a comfortable, family-owned restaurant, and is often packed on the weekends. Really, it's my go-to place for reliably good food when I'm in town-- and the Bloody Mary's aren't bad, either! I've been going there for years, and will continue to do so. I love Cappy's!
BEST BREAKFAST IN TOWN!
Fantastic food - huge portions- great value - and a cool/sexy bar!
This place is great for chilling on a Sunday morning - it's always packed but the service is fast so even with a line out the door, I've never waited more than 15-20 minutes.
GREAT people watching and KILLER patio! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!
btw get a bloody mary. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
This is as good as it gets!! I'm from Vegas and everytime I drive into Newport I make a stop at Cappy's for one of their big ass omelettes and to check out their hot waitresses. I recommend getting a mimosa with a beach burrito...You gotta check it out!
So to make a long story short went here got eyed out by the locals lol my friend ordered a California omelet and got a omelet stuffed with a crap load of bacon. Than to make things a bit worst we told the waitress and she took his plate only to come back in 5 min with the omelet egg part ontop of a little mound of stuff under it. It looked really gross. I mean like it's like they unfolded the omelet than put some stuff on the plate put a shot of sour cream and guac and than re covered the mound with the egg part of the omelet and threw tons of cheese with greasy bubbles on top. hahahah
Damn lucky for me my food was so-so. But man my friends order was fucccckkeed up. lol They didn't even put potatos on his plate after she took the order and "remade" it. Than she forgot to get him his side of oranges... It was like one after another and she didn't say sorry or nothin.
I think my friend didn't even tip her. I did but not much. She wasn't a bitch but the lack of observation on the waitresses part and quality of the food made denny's look much better. And I hate hate hate dennys
Anyways. The girls were kinda cute too... like a hooters for breakfast sorta? lol
"Cappy's Last Resort" is what it should be called. The only time I enjoyed breakfast was when I had a lot to smoke and was real real hungry : ) Stay with basics here. Pancakes, eggs, etc. And dont even bother with their mimosa ; )
Seems like the place to be for the locals. Good looking waitresses, good omelets and coffee. Service was OK. The place was a bit messy, but the vibe was good and very animated. Not a family place, but worth a try if you want to hang with friends or nurse a hangover.
Forgive me if the following sounds like a character out of a Raymond Carver short story, but it was morning and I wanted booze with my breakfast. Drove all around Costa Mesa for a good while before heading up PCH, only to spot the word "cantina" on Cappy's sign.
First, the waitress was a sweet little thang, and her suggestion of a mimosa had me in a good mood quicker than you can say, "The full bar opens at 6am!"
I've become quite a biscuits 'n' gravy connoisseur over the last few months and Cappy's are OUTFUCKINGSTANDING. I mean, they're win-an-award-down-South good! After two drinks, a great meal that would stick to my bones, and a bummed cigarette off my doll of a server, I was on my way and ready to face the world.
It was brekie time and I still needed something to fill my liquor-filled belly from the previous night dancing and drinking escapade. The place must be popular since there were many people waiting for a table inside and outside and the tiny, cramped lot that they have was full.
Once seated we placed our orders and the bf and I decided to get the nachos rancheros to share. I don't know why we ordered nachos at 10 AM, but afterwards I did not feel very well and was craving something fresh and healthy.
That's not to say that the nachos were bad...they were actually quite tasty. The tortilla chips were not your standard, cardboard-like corn tortilla chips. These might have been corn but they were light and very crispy. There were two dollops of guacamole and sour cream and then drizzled all over the chips was cheddar cheese and some type of ranchero sauce. The plate cost about $8 so that's a steal if you're splitting it with some other people. Just make sure you really want nachos...I really wanted fruit or salad but I ended up ordering nachos. Hmmm, how did that happen?
Been here 2 times now. The first was for breakfast. They have a ton of creative omelette combinations so I picked one. Came out good and hot with alot of potatoes. Service was quick and friendly. 3 stars.
Second time was for dinner on Wednesday. I thought if they only do it one night a week it must be really special? Wrong. By the time they were finished with me I was totally annoyed. The food was nothing special. The service was so bad. My server was just clueless, couldn't keep the drinks full, seemed bugged the we were even there. She even said a couple of times "I'm just so out of it tonight". But, making no apologies about it to us, rude. 1 star
But, the worst. The server at the table behind me. Going on and on and on with the regular customers she had. It wasn't very deep subject matter either. Just her and them trying to make their lives sound interesting to everyone else in the room. I turned around twice to give her the stink eye but, nothing. I'm not hyper-sensitive to these sorts of things. It just went on for too long, too loud. 1 star
I would give it another go for breakfast but not for dinner.
Hate this place, decided to be adventureous and try the crab omelette. It tasted so bad, I took a couple bites and decided to hit McDonalds. This place does have a full bar, so I'll give them a star for that, I like having either a Bloody Mary or Mimosa with my breakfast
After drinking a wee bit too much last night but still making it to Sprinkles before the craziness, my good friend from Arizona and I decided to stop at Cappy's for breakfast on our way back to Long Beach. When we walked in there was no one else waiting for a table. By the time we got seated at our table out on the small patio, the lobby was full of people waiting. (I have an amazing knack for showing up to restaurants just before the rush.) There were lots of folks still dressed in the pj's or work out gear. This place definitely seemed to cater to the Newport/Huntington Beach crowd who just rolled out of bed.
They brought us two cups of coffee right away along with our menus. The coffee wasn't great, but someone came around with a refill every three sips or so. I got the spinach and cheddar omelette. It was good, but there was a ton of spinach in it. I could only eat about half.
The bathroom was clean, though the stall door didn't latch, so my friend and I had to do a tag team to watch the door for each other. The strangest thing, I thought, was that they have mouth wash in the bathroom. Nice, but strange.
Overall it was a pretty good experience and I'll definitely be putting Cappy's on my list of places to bring out-of-towners in the future.
Cappy's Cafe is like an old friend you haven't seen in awhile.....and I mean that in a good way.
Whoever hires the waitresses, bravo. For you single guys, I say "happy hunting' at a place like this. And for a married guy like myself, well, let's just say that it's always nice to have an attractive waitress, you know? Like I said, not sure who does the hiring, but thumbs up from me, at least based on the last time I was here (6 months ago? Has it really been that long? Note to self: go to Cappy's soon!).
The food is only OK, which is why I held back a few stars, but this place has a cool vibe, the service is always fast and friendly, and with the aforementioned cute, friendly girls waiting on you, what's not to like, exactly?
As an added bonus, a few former pro athletes have been known to have breakfast here....I won't blow their cover, but you would know them.
This place is very mellow, has a nice energy, and is easy to find, on PCH.
I have never had anything but breakfast here, but they do serve lunch and I think they even serve dinner on Wednesday nights? Trust but verify.
Great place to nurse a hangover. There is a tiny little bar on the left hand side of the restaurant as you enter.
Cappy's is a great hang. Check it out when you can!
Why I love Cappy's:
1. Go out the night before and order shots, mixed drinks, and beer.
2. When with a certain group of people, late night Jack in the Box or Ham & Cheese croissant run, more drinking.
3. Dancing in a friends living room.
4. Roll out of bed the next day.
5. Throw on a casual sun dress or some jeans and a hoodie, and flip flops.
6. Roll into Cappy's at a decent hour.
7. Order a bloody and yummy breakfast with 100 other people who did the same thing.
Great place for breakfast. great view. tons of people. fast service. great food. great atmosphere. great location!!
Cappys is always solid. Great food. Fun atmosphere. Great Breakfast Burrito. Good for kids.
This place seems like a de facto breakfast spot for the locals and OCers after a night of clubbing. I've tried their monte cristo sandwich and meat skillet which were both average in comparison to their price. I think they could (read: should) lower their price a dollar or two for that level of quality and presentation. Their bloody mary is on the smaller side as well, served in a tumbler style glass with just a stalk of celery. Service is attentive though and the waitresses are quick. But I honestly have to say that I've seen better french toast at IHOP.
Cappy's Cafe and Cantina is local favorite for breakfast and lunch, not to be confused with such other stalwarts like Denny's or Ruby's.
Sitting on a small lot not too far from the Big Belly Deli, Cappy's is the sort of place that you goto after a hard night of drinking, and partying on a Fri or Sat. night. This is the sort of place you go to and get a screwdriver or a bloody Mary while you are waiting for you table. The menu is pretty much comfort food, with some Mexican shizzle tossed in for good measure.(I recommend the Mexican Breakfast Burrito served wet)Portions are hearty and the food is nice and greasy, just as you would expect it to be in a spot like this...The clientele is made up of local Cougars, Old man Surfers and residents who want chow down on the diner like grub.
They are open from 6-3 most of the week and are open for dinner like on Wed.'s. They are really 3.5 stars, but since you can booze it up for breakfast I gave Ol' Cappy and extra .5
4/5 Bloody Mary's for Crust Cappy and his Cafe/Cantina
Great place for breakfast. Friendly staff, good service. Weekends are busy. Good food and good portions. VERY questionable decor. Great hangover spot.
The waitress was almost too perky. It made me suspicious. Was I supposed to return the favor? I wonder if she knew I slept in the clothes I arrived in? I came in for breakfast and when I'm tired and hungry I owe no one a witty quip or gratuitous laugh. Still, a friendly waitress earns you an extra star in my book.
The decor comes with that 1980's hue of aqua that my Barbie ice cream shop came in (sans pink) (-1 star). The painted murals were interesting and there's Scope provided for you in the bathrooms. Awesome (+ 1 star).
The food was good. I had the vegetarian skillet and it was all yums (+ 1 star) except for the overload on potatoes. I always do the mental math for the number of potatoes in a meal and mine must've had at least 4 (- 1 star).
Ok maybe 3 (+1 stars). Still....way too many potatoes, but the avocado was good and so was the cheese and broccoli. I'd certainly go back again (+1).
(1+1+1+1+1) - 1- 1= 3 stars
I don't know if this is exactly a destination restaurant. But if, say, we'd had a long day at the beach and were starving and looking for a simple, no-frills meal, we'd be back.
We mostly went because of the name. Cappy's. We kind of expected a dim joint serving chowder to sailors and a perfect place to go on a cold, rainy day. It's totally not like that at all!
I had one of their wraps (with chicken and avocado), and it was pretty good. My boyfriend had a ham skillet, which he thought was decent. Cappy's is just that -- simple, nothing out of this world or worth going out of your way for, but it gets the job done.
Don't know why this place has such a bad rep. They make a mean Bloody Mary, so mean it kicks what hangover I have left even after an early winter morning dip in the freezing Pacific Ocean. My friend and I have made it a tradition to wake up early, head down to Newport for a dunk in the water, shiver on the beach in towels while she smokes a post-ocean cigarette, and then head over to Cappy's to fill our stomachs. I've never had a bad meal, in fact the french toast is some of the best I've ever had, the clientele is most amusing, like those two guys that my friend and i tried to figure out whether they were on a date or just friends (they had some interestingly ambiguous body language going on), and again, BLOODY MARY make my mouth water. Who can dis such a colorful place?
My favorite place for breakfast when I'm in town. It's filled with locals and is the most unpretentious place in all of Newport Beach. It is tasty diner breakfast food without having to leave the place smelling like grease.
Although they were surprisingly crowded early on Christmas Eve, the staff handled our party of seven -- including two picky adults and a cantaloupe-throwing-seventeen-month-old -- in stride. Pancakes were fair to good, and on the table they have flavored non-dairy creamer for your coffee. (I am partial to the french vanilla, although it is probably causing me to grow tumors.) People at the table were disappointed that their bread products came pre-slathered with butter. And if you're still doing Atkins, you'll be happy to know that there are huge portions of egg whites already on the menu for your ketone-lovin' ways.
3.5 stars - cos i love my morning bloody mary.
i love breakfast but i wasn't satisfied when i walked out of here. i had one of my breakfast favorites, corned beef hash and eggs. i've had tastier eats at other places...
