I'm actually delighted that Capogiro is so pricey. Or rather, the part of me that cares about fitting into my clothes is delighted. Otherwise, I might be tempted to visit every day.
The space is inviting, with plenty of seating and fun old family photos decorating the walls. It looks like there's an outdoor area as well?
I have yet to adventure much beyond a vanilla chocolate flavor combo. It's just the right amount of creamy, sweet, nice to look at...
why mess with success, right?

Goodness gracious, great gelato!
Macadamia nut and thai coconut milk were my choices. The textures varied (the macadamia was almost like refrigerated cookie dough, whereas the coconut milk was much more melty), but the flavors went very well together. Being able to taste flavors (which most gelato places do) was a benefit, since I was able to nix Walnut and wasn't stuck with something I didn't care for.
You've gotta be crazy not to like gelato, and Capogiro's was quite excellent. Go in for a taste test of your own!

Capogiro is finally in good company - smack dab in the middle of Italian South Philly, and I couldn't be happier.
This is a cute little location right along the 1600 block of Passyunk, perfect for that post-Cantina dessert. I opted for a mix of the Mexican Chocolate and the Bourbon Vanilla - I suppose it's the foodie version of your standard chocolate-vanilla twist. It was amazing - the kick of the spicy chocolate was calmed by the vanilla. Their back patio was still closed when I dropped in - I hope it's already open, or will be soon!
Trust me, I will be hitting this location up frequently on those hot summer days.

I'd never been to a capogiro before, but it was still welcome news to here about another business opening on east passyunk. After getting home from dinner the other night, some friends of mine and I were still itching for dessert.
They really did a good job with the decor it really feels like a step above your average ice cream parlor. I didn't stay there to eat though, so can't really comment on the seating. I'll have to get back there for a better look.
I was a little put off by the pricing, it does seem like a bit much for small cups or cones of ice cream. Still, its very good, and its an adventure mixing flavors. I mixed pistachio with a mixed berry flavor, and it worked really well. Should have gotten a cone instead of a bowl though, and the tiny spoon just didn't work. Good ice cream, just a bit on the pricey side.

Tonight after another amazing meal at Izumi, I walked into Capogiro for the first time. It is beautiful, bright and cozy. There is a lovely little patio and an upstairs room that is not yet opened, but will be great this summer. I want to move into this building.
The service was generous and friendly; the man with the Chester A Arthur muttonchops behind the counter kept offering me taste after taste of amazing gelato and sorbet concoctions: grapefruit campari, limoncello, cucumber. I settled on a more decadent Banana Foster gelato topped with espresso. But, my god they were all so tasty. Capogiro is another magical addition to East Passyunk. My fat ass is going to be living here this summer.

The yumminess of Capogiro South is as expected if you've ever experienced the pleasure of Capogiro's gelato. It definitely is a South Philly version of the joint, with the decor including old timey photos of generations past. The colors are cheerful and the redecoration of the space was well done, including the restoration of the original hardwood floors!
My only concern is the freezer is so close to the door, so I envision a gridlock by the front door during the long hot days of summer. I hope everyone can be nice to each other.

The new renovation is adorable, all retro blue and black and white "family photos" on the wall. It looks like there is a surfeit of space, which is nice (the last time I went we were the ONLY customers...something that has never, ever happened in any Capogiro I've been to!)
It was a little disappointing not being able to see the flavors in the freezer like in other locations but that is a minor qualm.
So far I've only tried one flavor, but damn if that wasn't the best mojito I've had (in a bar or otherwise). Gelato, rum, mint, lime, and sugar... how could you go wrong?

I was very excited when this location opened because it is so close to my apartment and the bars I frequent. The gelato is great, I love combining hazlenut and pistachio together. However, I am not impressed by the staff at this location. I have been here twice and each time felt belittled by them. I felt as if they were annoyed that they had to wait on me (or anyone for that matter). For what the place charges, dealing with a snotty attitude just isn't worth it. I will probably go back because it's in my neighborhood; that's the only reason.

YUM! I just had the pineapple mint gelati with the grapefruit campari sorbet. It was so refreshing and delicious, the perfect finish to my sushi dinner at Izumi. They eagerly offered taste after taste until we made our selection. The place is really cute, and there is a patio to open soon, as well as a beautiful space upstairs. I'm all smiles about this place and I can't wait to go back.

Like a well-skilled tease, Capogiro slowly revealed itself on Passyunk Ave. First came the brown paper-covered windows, followed by the stained glass "Gelateria" window over the door, and then hints and peeks at robin blue walls, a large glass lighting fixture, and a space age-looking espresso machine...my anticipation met a near feverish pitch.
Considering my stalker-like interest in this outpost of Capogiro, I was the first customer by sheer accident (or was it fate?). I walked by on my way to dinner and was disappointed to see the brown paper still up. I walked by again on my way home from dinner an hour later, and surprise surprise, the brown paper had just come down.
The owners smartly considered the location and original incarnation of the space, keeping the original woodwork and lining the walls with black and white photos reminiscent of old South Philly, all while managing to maintain their trademark Capogiro aesthetic. The back room is simple and airy, with ample seating and access to additional seating in the outdoor garden.
My one gripe, and the gripe holding me back on that last star, is the way they decided to display the gelato - or in this case, not display it. I have always appreciated the visual presentation of their gelato in their other locations - seeing a slice of pomelo placed artfully next to a mint sprigs in a thick sea of pastel-colored creamy goodness entices me to give it a taste. Having frequented other locations, I know to trust the unusual-sounding creations. However, I know that reading "pomelo mint" printed nicely on a chalkboard would not have interested me in the past. I fear it may work for newcomers in the same way.
That aesthetic issue aside, it is a great addition to the Avenue...though maybe not so great for my waist.

Fantastic gelato, blah blah blah -- everyone's written this about a jillion times. I just wanna know why I have to refinance my mortgage to afford a small cup.

I suppose I am a gelato ignoramus, but I don't see what all the hype is about. Maybe I didn't pick the right flavors or combination thereof. Maybe I don't know how much air or cream or whatever is supposed to be in this stuff. With that said, I did think the one chocolate flavor we had was outstanding and the others just OK. But not nearly worth the price. I feel wrong in thinking that some store brands, though obviously not nearly as fresh or natural, have better flavor than what I tried... But, that's what I think. Maybe I'll try it again sometime?
