man, dr. may is a NICE guy. took my *angel* 13 y/o bassett boo-boo in for what we knew was some sort of end-of-life issue. dr. may was extremely distressed to share a dreaded lymphoma diagnosis. but due to his care, concern & treatment, we've gotten more time w/ boo to accept the eventual end of his life and made peace. thank you boo-boo for all the joy you brought to my life and thank you dr. may for giving me the time to let him go with gratitude instead of pain.
*Update* - boo-boo has passed. unfortunately, it was during hours when dr. may's practice was closed, so we had to go to the emergency vet hospital. but dr. may's office still followed up with us, reaching out to let us know they care and sending resources for how to deal with the loss of a pet. i understand business and know capitola vet clinic would like our business when we add a new dog to our family, but there is not a nicer way he could have done it and i am thoroughly convinced that while, sure, dr. may cares for his business, he also truly cares for the pets he treats and their owners. i will NOT go anywhere else for the care of a pet! -

All I can say is wow, what a great vet hospital. I recently moved to the area and brought my dog Kaya in for a flea treatment and everyone at the hospital treated us both with care and compassion. We moved from an area that is flea free so I was a bit puzzled to why Kaya was so itchy/licky, and Dr. Logothetti was super helpful in explaining the symptoms and my options for the flea remedy.
In addition Deborah and Stephanie took the time to get to know my dog, and how she reacts to being in the hospital. We never 'baby talk' to Kaya as this makes her excited/irritable and I asked them to do the same, which they did. In fact, they even put it on her chart to inform the rest of the staff! I've told my friends in the area with dogs that this is the spot and I am now a solid customer. -

We had our first visit with Dr. May a couple of days ago and I am so happy with the entire experience. From the moment we walked in the door to the moment we checked out, every person in the clinic was so friendly and welcoming.
Dr. May was very calm with our high anxiety dog and was great at offering, in a non-pushy way, options for suggested screenings for our aging pup. He was also able to examine our dog, show us the online resources available to clients and type up an estimate for care all in the same room. I really appreciate and respect a Dr. that knows and is involved in all aspects of their clinic. I was surprised and excited when he offered to email me information on issues relating to my dog. To my even greater surprise, the email and information was waiting for me by the time I got home - now that is great customer service!
Needless to say, I am very happy with Dr. May and the staff at CVH. I can't imagine taking my dog, and future pets, anywhere else. -

We've taken our animals to Dr. River May for years and were thrilled to hear that he had taken over at Capitola Vet Hospital. His care for our two cats and dog over the past six years has been exceptional. He provided a diagnosis for our dog B which our former Vet had missed and which may have saved his life. He's got such a thorough and thoughtful style and makes us feel like he cares as much as we do about Sophie, Mango and B.

This vet hospital rocks! I took our cat in for an appointment on Monday and had a great experience. The staff is super friendly (especially Benjamin) and Dr. May took amazing care of our cat.
During the appointment Dr. May determined that our little kitty will likely need surgery. My first thought was, surgery OMG!!! but then Dr. May calmly and considerately began explaining all of my options. What we ultimately decided was to keep her on a special diet for 4 additional weeks to see if the issue would resolve before pursuing surgery. I really appreciated Dr. May's style. He was very honest yet so caring. I couldn't ask for a better vet!

Capitola Veterinary Hospital has been serving the communities of Santa Cruz County and beyond for 20 years. Dr May became the owner and medical director of Capitola Veterinary Hospital in June of 2010.
Meet the Business Owner: River M.
I am honored to be the owner and Medical Director of Capitola Veterinary Hospital. After graduating from UC Davis' School of Veterinary Medicine in 1998, I began my career in a specialty referral hospital. Working with board certified veterinary specialists for over 10 years allowed me to hone advanced skills in endoscopy, ultrasound, critical care, and surgery. After 11 years, I decided to join Los Gatos Dog and Cat Hospital where I began general practice. Still, I longed to be closer to the communities of Santa Cruz I consider home and thus I decided to begin my own practice in Capitola. My focus is to combine friendly, professional & compassionate care with advanced medical skills. My philosophy emphasizes preventative medicine in order to keep your pet healthy and I will search for environmentally responsible ways of achieving this whenever possible. I accept the privilege to care for your animals as an honor and look forward to meeting you!
