OK, so the Capitola Mall isn't much when compared to the big malls in the valley. But you know what? I moved out of the valley to get away from all of that craziness. I mean, c'mon, have you been to Oakridge Mall at 10 pm on a Friday night? Have you seen the hoards of people, crazed teens, and oddballs roaming everywhere? I'm sorry but I absolutely HATE zig-zagging through a crowded mall while trying to go buy something. I want to get in and out. And don't even talk to me about Santana Row. It makes me want to shoot myself.
Yes, Capitola Mall has a limited selection of stores. You have a Kohls, a Sears, and a Macy's. And you have some good stuff like the At&T, Vann's, and Santa Cruz stores. Don't ask me about all of the stores because I'm a guy and I don't really notice if they have Wet Seal or Forever 21. I can tell you that the Borders is gone. It closed. Heck, the whole mall closes at 8. But what do I care? I'm old and kind of crusty. All I know is I can find pretty much everything I need there without bumping into young people with purple hair. -

Being a student from UCSC, having a getaway to go to a shopping mall is nice every once in awhile, but this mall absolutely is very minscule in comparison to even just mini-malls in other cities.
If you absolutely need to get some major shopping done, this would be my last resort to getting my shopping done. If you really want a shopping experience, I suggest you invest the extra time into driving all the way to San Jose and go check out Valley Fair mall or other malls in the area. ie. Great Mall, Eastridge Mall, etc.
If you're a student at UCSC and you have no car, the only way that is formidable to getting to Capitola Mall is by riding a metro bus all the way to the metro station and then proceed to hop on one of the 6X-7X routes. Bus rides may vary, sometimes it would take 25 minutes from the metro station, sometimes up to an hour if there is traffic.
Not much to this mall, except for the up and coming Target that's arriving here in the future. For all you Target heads, yes, you will be able to drive to Capitola instead of going all the way to Watsonville when Target arrives! -

This mall has almost nothing in it. But it is definitely the closest and ONLY mall in santa cruz. Every time I have been here it has never been crowded, I guess you never have to wait in line to buy anything though. They have some alright stores though: Victoria's Secret, Vans, Wet Seal, Coach, Kohls, Sears, Journey's, Macy's, Shiek, Hot Topic, Abercrombie, and some more. There is a small food court but I've only been there once. I can't say that this place is dirty but it definitely doesn't have a very nice feel once you walk in. Don't come here if you just want to have a nice place to walk around in, go to downtown Santa Cruz instead, they also have some stores.
DON"T TAKE THE PHOTOBOOTH PICTURES HERE. Me and my boyfriend went to take them and the picture was cut in half because the lens was crooked so half of it was covered by the cover!!
Sherri's cookies is amazing though. It's right by the entrance across from Starbucks! -

It's a sad mall. It needs more stores. It needs a Target :) I normally go to Capitola Mall just for a few stores (Macy's, Kohl's, Sears, V.S.). I don't go often even though I live a couple of miles away. I hope it improves soon.
The next mall close to me is Northridge in Salinas. But, I don't dare go there because I don't want to get hurt. Though, they don't have much either. I guess if I really wanted to go to a mall I have to go to Oakridge mall in San Jose, or Gilroy Outlets. -

Not so lovely. Never had a memorable time here... the only stores that were worth going to were Hot Topic and Wet Seal... when I was a freshman in high school over 15 years ago.
The only reason why I'd stop here is if I was partying in Santa Cruz and somehow lost my chones (this doesn't bother me) and I was wearing a short dress and it was uber windy and I didn't have time to run home in between engagements... then maybe I'd stop by Capitola Mall and grab some at VS. But let's be honest... I've been known to free-ball it at times (the female version whatever that may be). -

This mall gives the city Capitola a bad rep.
The place look so run down it needs better stores and restaurants before it can be called a mall.
The only thing i had a good encounter was the Sorabol where I ordered a chicken teriyaki. The guy lured us in by samples and told us we are grilling fresh teriyaki chicken and do you guys want one? Of course in my mind I wasn't to sure, but after a bite of the smell I was sold. They hook us up with a lot of chicken and noodles (chop chae) and rice.
I say hands down the best Sorabol I have encounter at the mall. They are usually really cheap. What I mean cheap is they would pick a piece of chicken with tongs and cut it in to pieces and if your bowl looks full even though it's a small piece of chicken left, they put that small piece back for the next person. That is so CHEAP!
Another good thing they had was star bucks. Everyone loves star bucks right?
Other than this place it's not great at all -

The saddest, janky-est mall, I have ever been to. This mall is seriously dead and I don't know why I manage to come here and actually find something to buy. I guess I always come here having an emergency and resorting to this place as a last resort. The only store that I come here for is the Victoria's Secret because I always get coupons from there. It is hard to find clothes here because the stores they do have sell really ugly designs and do not fit my style. I wish they had a Nordstrom or Forever 21. The only plus side about this mall is that depending on what you are looking for, certain items go on final clearance sale because no one ever shops here! So I guess you could find some stuff at a really low price.
Besides this mall being empty, the food court looks worse! Because this place is so empty, I am almost certain the food sits out there for the whole day waiting to be purchased.
I would definitely rather make the drive to go to Valley Fair in San Jose. -
Review from Tom L.
Coming to this mall is on par with gargling razor blades.
In fairness I don't generally like shopping or malls, but this mall is especially bad. There is seriously nothing in this mall that is worth coming to. There is a small Border's bookstore, but why would anyone come here to buy a book when they can support one of the two amazing local bookstores in downtown Santa Cruz (Bookshop Santa Cruz and The Literary Guillotine)?
Come Christmas time you want to be able to go and get all of your shopping done in one place, this is definitely not the place to make that happen. Unless your family wants cheap trinkets from the kiosks scattered throughout the mall you are going to struggle to find anything to buy for them. Your family would probably be happier if you gave them a lump of coal rather than anything from here.
The worst part about this mall is the location. I seriously hate 41st St., I will never understand why there is so much traffic on a road that has nothing worth driving to. The parking at the mall isn't bad on a normal day, but during the holidays it becomes a joke, seriously don't even bother.
If you need to go to a mall and don't feel like experiencing hell on earth, take a trip over the hill and go to Valley Fair. -

When we moved to Santa Cruz in 1982, we had a house 2 blocks behind the Capitola Mall. Back then it seemed to be a pretty good place to shop -considering I came from SJ and was used to Valley Fair Mall - but over the years Capitola Mall had gone downhill rapidly. The death nil for me was when they built a children's play area right smack dab in the center of the food court. Oh yea, the shrill screams of wild savages running around really made me want to sit and have a quick bite. Nope, no way, no sirree!
Fast forward to last Tuesday night: husband had a physical therapy appt so I had him drop me off at the Capitola Mall so I could pick up a few things at Macy's and Bath & Body Works. I figured it had been at least a couple years since I'd been there so I was hopeful that it had changed. It took me about 20 minutes to get what I had come for so I still had about an hour to kill. I noticed the place was fairly dead considering it is Christmas shopping time, so I decided to take a walk around to see what was still there that I remembered.
Sadly, except for a scaled down Macy's, Bath & Body Works, Hallmark, Sears, & Claire's (costume jewelry), there was nothing there I was interested in. I also noticed a complete lack of stores for anyone over a size 16, for both men and women. Wasn't there a Lane Bryant store here once upon a time? The Disney Store is gone as was Bombay Company, always great for after Christmas sales!
I'm not sure who Mall management thinks they are catering to but if you like LOTS of cheaply made crap and lots of cheaply priced clothing, the Capitola Mall is right for you. I ended up sitting on a bench next to Santa's Workshop, also surprisingly dead, and played a video game on my Blackberry until my husband picked me up. PATHETIC!!! -

Im gonna be honest and say this mall sucks donkey balls. I mean, it gets the job done, but store variety is terrible, food court is meh, and service is basically shit. This place is crowded with 12 year olds. I swear, All stores are small and hopeless. There is no Gap or Disney store. Shiek has terrible service, I hate that store and do not recommend it. Capitola mall is boring and has crappy stores. Drive down to San Jose and their malls- its worth it.

Santa Cruz Apparel is the best store in the mall by a mile. Go visit them, true locals, who support local charities and are also Platinum Sponsors of the Capitola Jr. Guards. They carry all the best Santa Cruz clothing as well as Reef Sandals and a bunch of skateboards.

As I've mentioned MANY times previously, I'm not the brightest star in the constellation when in comes to decisions. But there's a VERY important event on Wednesday, and I need to look hot. Crutches and all. So like the imbecile that I am, I went here on Black Friday. On crutches. Granted, I waited until the stampede had passed, but it was still crowded.
In the past, I have managed to find a few hidden treasures in this mall, but like others have said, it's not large and it doesn't have the best selection. There are a few tried and true stores like Macy's, Abercrombie, and a bunch of stores owned by the Limited Company, and there's a few stores which I'm amazed stay in business. I only went to a few of them, but here is my tale:
I know I keep harping on the fact that I'm a wee bit infirm, but I didn't realize how hard it was to a) not hit anyone with my crutches, b) move around on said crutches, and c) not get my foot banged by the sale-hungry masses. I also failed to realize just how much help I actually need because my hands are essentially non-existent, firmly gripping those rubber smelling cushions. But I digress. Here's a breakdown of the helpfulness of the stores for the gimpy (NOT the Gimp, because he's sleeping...and I really don't want to wake him up):
The first store I went to was Wet Seal. And then found they moved across the way, so I had to circle the fountain. Why Wet Seal, since the average age is 12 and obsessed with that guy from Twilight? Because I was looking for something specific, and they had it online. Just wanted to check it out. Big mistake. Too many people, too many racks, not enough space. God I'm old.
I then went to New York & Company, where there was a salesperson folding something. Looked right at me, all wobbly, and didn't offer to help. Commission FAIL. I have never bought actual clothes at this store, even though I've looked. Meh.
Moved on to Express, where I found something, although not EXACTLY what I was looking for, hot nonetheless. While no one helped me as I was looking, they were very gracious when I went to checkout. And snagged the hanger on my crutches. They even offered me a bigger bag, which I declined. Commission PASS!
Next was Macy's- the staff here was helpful through and through- one saleslady even offered to run to another department to look for something for me, but I told her I'd just make my way over there myself. Just ended up purchasing some hot lipstick at MAC, where the pressure wasn't too much. Commission PASS!
All in all, not too horrible, although I will be thankful to have the use of both of my feet again. I will be back here often, because there's frankly not much else in Capitola. -

If ever you have a day where you're just too happy, too full of life, go to the Capitola Mall and you'll be brought down to earth. If you're just having an ok day, keep the razorblades away and cuffs over your wrists.
The only logical explanation for this mall is that it was built on an ancient Indian burial ground. I just cannot think of another reason that a place can suck the lifeblood out of you so quickly and so thoroughly. While I lived in Santa Cruz I think I went here three times. I returned because I kept on thinking it couldn't have been as I remembered. It was.
Take the 45 minutes to drive to San Jose or order online or go on Pacific. For your mental health, stay away from here at all costs.Listed in: My Sweet, Sweet Santa Cruz

This mall is a hellhole. Tons of closed down stores, and the few remaining shops are a terrible and eclectic mismatching. I literally haven't been to a worse mall since I lived in Bakersfield. Thank god for the adjacent Chili's bar (you're going to need a couple drinks to make this place interesting).

Small mall with a number of chain and overpriced shops. It's alright as malls go, but avoid the mall and head for mom and pop. You'll probably get a better deal and better stuff (though it is nice for chain items that you NEED like AT&T and Dairy Queen...). Yes, Dairy Queen is a "need."

Review from Shanna K.
Affectionately known as Crapitola Mall... this mall is just ok. Parking is fine and there is a Pier One, Trader Joe's and Bed Bath and BeyooOOooOoond across the street... which is good for one stop shoppin'. Ross and Starbucks, too.. should you feel the need.
Of interest to me, in the actual mall, are a small Macy's, Express, Sunglass Hut, Victoria Secret, Limited, Vans Shoes, Bath and Body Works and Hot Topic (come on, Hot Topic is fun). The Macy's is SO small though.. I only go there for basics I can get at any Macys like makeup and perfume (they do have a MAC counter). It's okay in a pinch but for anything else it's better to drive over the hill to Valley Fair.
There's also an Ann Taylor Loft, which some of my friends like.. and Abercrombie and Fitch.
Food Court.. pretty uneventful (Hot Dog on a Stick lost it's novelty when I was in high school, Sbarro, Subway, Casa Moreno... which I've not tried but looks like it might actually be okay... Sorabol)... but boyfriend loves Cinnabon. He's gonna die of heart failure. -

I hate this freaking mall. I just want to shop, dammit!
There is literally nothing here. Good luck to those who are not skater punks who still think Hot Topic is cool, or teeny-boppers who worship double A bras and Justin Bieber, or grown men who like to sag their pants down to their ankles.
The only thing I like here is Sears, because they have cheap pillows and sheets. And even those suck. I have never felt so miserable being in a mall. The Border's there sucks. The Express there sucks. The Macy's suck. Gamestop seems okay, though. Actually, the one cashier I had at Macy's was nice.
I guess I can go there for coffee at Starbucks and chicken stars at Jack in the Box. -__-
Also, don't bother bringing your stilts here because kids will come and knock you over. However, the fountain's pretty and the food choice seems halfway decent.
I have never used the word "suck" so many times in my life regarding only one topic. I would only go back if all my clothes were burned up and all of downtown Santa Cruz was closed due to a zombie plague. -

Disclaimer:
There are few things in this world that truly drive me to senseless rage and anxiety:
-Creamy Peanut Butter (As Mentioned in my Review of the post office)
-Post Offices
-Traffic Jams/Bad Drivers
aka: I HATE MALLS. ALL OF THEM. THEY ARE HELLISH PITS OF DESPAIR.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I can go on to the review.
Seriously, don't come here unless you enjoy the following:
* Having your fingernails ripped out.
* Sticking your hand in a running garbage disposal.
* Being eaten alive by rats and other vermin.
Each of the above scenarios closely mirrors an experience you might have at the mall, but particularly the Capitola Mall:
*** Being Eaten Alive by Rats and other Vermin***
The mall is infested with rodents (aka children) and their keepers, often times latina nannies, or mothers on a shopping bender. These ankle biters will swarm in and out of your path as you try to dash through the mall to get what you need and get the hell out. Be quick, or you're liable to drop over them, and then they converge around you, eager to devour your soul.
Also: Pumpkin's reminder that suburban hoodlum wannabe teenagers also roam freely in packs here. Descending upon hapless victims who just want to get in and get out, these teenaged Gs are recognizable by their distinct oversized coats and baggy clothing (perfect for shoplifting useless crap), especially on hot summer days.
*** Fingernail Rippage***
So imagine you're standing in line while some clueless clerk slowly rings people up like something out of the twilight zone. Her eyes are glassy, she stares off into space while she mindlessly drags tag after tag before the barcode scanner. The line continues to grow, and your dilemma becomes apparent. Drop your items and run, or get in line now before the system fails and you're stuck for an hour.
***Garbage Disposal Carnage***
This is in reference to the food poisoning you'll most assuredly get from eating food from the food court. I'd almost prefer to stick my hand in the disposal than eat at the mall.
The Bottom Line: Malls = Masochism. It's a lesser abyss in the realm of horror as compared to the megamalls out there, but still someplace I'd just as soon avoid like SARS.Listed in: Silly Me

I usually love this mall, so close to my house.
As of lately, I hate this mall.
The management/owners/kiosks/employees are RUDE, ARROGANT AND DISRESPECTFUL.
Let me start with the situation.
The Kiosk FLY HIGH. Horrible customer service, horrible employees and horrible owners.
I bought a stupid plane --which by the way-- do not support them in their business. Tell your family and tell your friends. Tell your neighbors or tell strangers. DO NOT SUPPORT THEM.
I bought a plane almost a month ago for my BF for christmas. Cheaply made---the controller stuck and caused the crashing. We were able to come in the day after christmas and exchange it for another one. YAY. That one, the gears were worn down so thin, it could barely turn or fly and it was just garbage. Ended up buying him a new one, cheaper & better. Anyways, two different employees told me they would be in the Capitola Mall until the end of Jan. (if there were any problems or I needed to exchange). Well i came back the 12th to get a refund, this piece of crap plane could not save its own life. I wanted my 100 dollars back so I could buy a better plane.
Well they left. On the 10th. 20 days early. The mall info told me they do this every year and people always complain about this company (then why would they continue doing business with them....) but anyways, I got the leasing manager's name and the Manager of the mall and the Owner of the Fly High company. I called her, she was very rude and yelled at me and fought me over the phone. I got her license number (permit number, which was incorrect) and plan on reporting her to BBB as well as both City of Salinas and City of Capitola. For conducting unethical business.
She claims they build their company on good customer service and customer relations-BULLSHIT they do. The employee was rude to me and had an attitude when I wanted to exchange this crap wad.
I am going to the Salinas Mall to stand in front of their kiosk to make sure people know and see what they are getting. GARBAGE!!!!!!! I am so fed up with them! Also, Capitola Mall--dont try to get information from them, they act like they are your friends, but they are not. I asked for some information about this company to include in my report and she was very vague with me and brushed me off, same with the Manager.

being from san jose, I'm use to gigantic malls that take hours to get around (Valley Fair, Great Mall, Santana Row, etc)
For the size (yes, for the record people, it IS small!), they actually have all your mainstream stores you'd want. no useless jewelry stores lining an entire hallway or anything.
*and a spirit halloween store here for halloween!*
it's small enough where when there's a particular store I want to go to, it takes no more than 5 minutes to get there.
It can get intimidating in some stores during slow hours because sometimes you'll be the ONLY person in there. I never enjoy having the staff watch me the entire time I'm in a store. -
Review from Kenny P.
I was unfortunately taken here by a friend one summer, only to find that it was the one of the worst smallest malls I've even been to. Think Valco before AMC moved in, yes seemingly empty with a few choice shops and a handful of other random ones. The places looks like it hasn't been updated inside since the early 90s, and could really use a renovation.
I'd guess that most Santa Cruz people who shop at the few stores that are in here. The choices are limited, unless you like shopping at AE, Aero, or AF. This is a really sad mall, but it only strikes you when you are walking along the mall hallways, not so much while in a store. In a way, I'm glad that I've never been back here since. -

Manhattan Beach, CA
I gave it a 3 because I couldn't give a 2.5.
Don't expect much from this place. It's simply a small town mall with a Macy's, Sears, Gottchalks, Mervyn's and a series of other little stores like Hot Topic. Good to just walk around, spend some time, etc. The food court is also small, but does have a certain variety going. Mexican, American, Chinese, Korean, Italian and a couple of dessert shops.
Overall, simply a small place, but if you have not been to it, it is at least worth the small walk and time. -

This is the crappiest mall I've ever been to. Really surprising that its the only place around in SC county, but i'm sure remains shitty because no one in Santa Cruz wants to support corporations or big business. You know what they say...shop local. It does have some good stores, but just stepping foot in to this place is fairly depressing. I used to go here occasionally on days that I didn't have class and wanted to get out of hippie ville for a while (or if it was crappy at the beach). Walking around here can kill some time, but yeah, this place pretty much sucks.

Do not go to this mall! It could be the most expensive thing you did all year.
There is a traffic camera which gives tickets for making *legal* right turns on red into the mall. Here's a local news story about it: http://www.thenewspape...
I plan to protest my ticket in court, but given that I am from out of town, I am not certain I will win. If I lose, my grande latte cost $400 for the ticket plus another $1000 or so in increased insurance. $1400 for a cup of coffee is expensive, even by Starbucks standards. -

I dedicate this mall review to all the women out there that have been disappointed in bed before.
Woman says: Paaaaauuuuunnnnneeeeee!!!!
Mall says: Maybe, but it is the motion of the ocean that counts. The quality of my stores are where it's at!!
Woman says: ok, that is what small malls say, lol but some truth to that...but wait ur stores are garbage, I can't feel anything, ur ocean has no waves just ripples which are making me seasick.
Mall says: But I'm cute, right?
Woman says: Actually no. Your roof needs maintenance, your parking lots are dirty with lots of shrubs and you have STD's (gangsters posted up front at the bus stop) I can see why you don't get many shoppers.
Mall says: Just shut up and hold on to my huge back parking lot while I give u a cheap thrill with my cheap prices and bring u to a shopping orgasm. The best is yet to cum!!
Woman says: Actually your back parking lot only holds two rows of cars, the pavement is too flat, plus it is a two way street, I knew you were hiding some secrets from me. Ur prices are expensive, you couldn't bring a girl to a shopping orgasm if u had a half off sale.
Mall says: Oh yeah my fire hydrant in my entrance maybe small but it packs a powerful punch when it is backed into by a car with an actual big trunk and low miles.
Woman says: BS! Plus ur hydrant is leaking. OMG!!! Your done already!! What a rip!!!
Mall *smokes cigarette*- Thx! Now get out I close early baby.
Woman-*leaves disappointed and broke*
Later woman sees a hott guy in a yellow corvette who takes her to a Southern California mall where she lives happily ever after. The end.
For guys- This one is teenie tiny. The ratio really doesn't make a difference, as this place is always empty. Your best bet would be to hit on the employees, besides it is your only option. :(
For girls- I have seen forever 21's bigger with more selection than this entire mall. Guys usually gangsters or some dehydrated scruffy looking wannabe surfers, about as thin as their surfboards. -

San Jose, CA
I used to be a UCSC university student and would frequent this place whenever I want to eat at Chili's or I just want to go shopping without going to Salinas/Watsonville or San Jose.
This mall is pretty much dead to me. You'll find a few locals and some university students at Wet Seal/Express/Macy's looking for something to wear when partying or bar hopping.
Or if you want more casual prep beach wear then Abercrombie, Aeropostale, American Eagle, PacSun, and Zumies are the places to be.
Otherwise, this place isn't so great. I would have given this place less stars, but I ALWAYS find hidden gems here the day after black friday. Also if a store at another mall, which also has a store located in Capitola mall, has something you want that is out of stock, you can almost always find it here. Not to mention the Macy's benefit/Mac counters are always helpful and nice. -

This mall is pretty small (although bigger than both the malls is Stockton and they have better stores!). This mall has all of the stores that my kids like: Macy's, Hot Topic, Spencers, Claires, Wet Seal, Sheikh Shoes, No Fear, Express, Journeys, Pac Sun, etc. The food court is small and although they have a good variety of food, nothing that we had was very appetizing. Even my Cinnabon didn't taste right!

Word of warning about parking, there are quite a few car break ins here. EVEN if you have nothing in your car.... NO matter how tempting the parking garage may be, do not do it. The fountain, it smells. Like the water in your (clean)toilet, not real pleasant. I broke a sweat in there, so stressful, I like to mindlessly consume sometimes too, but whoa, this was INTENSE.

I always go back to this mall hoping that it will magically get better but it never does. There are a handful of halfway decent stores but it still just sucks in general. For example the Wet Seal and Victoria's Secret stores in Capitola are worse then the locations in other malls. This pattern is the same with macy*s and every other half decent store. They just added a Coach store but I am not a fan of Coach and If I wanted a purse from there I would go to the outlets in Gilroy.
The only decent stores are Victoria's Secret, Wet Seal, Macy*s, Hot Topic, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Claire's, Border's Express, Zumiez, and PacSun. I don't normally shop at these stores too much but living in Santa Cruz county you get desperate for halfway decent shopping.
This mall can have strange odors and I will not eat in the food court. The best bathroom is in Starbucks. Outside of Abercrombie & Fitch smells extremely strong and can give you a headache. I got a migraine from being in there too long once. Also the kiosks will harass you so be careful walking by them when you go through the mall.
This mall is begging for a makeover from Westfield!!! Honestly if you live in South County you should just drive to Salinas to The Northridge Mall, and if you live in the North County just drive to the Valley Fair Mall in San Jose. You will be much more satisfied with your shopping experiences. -

This mall is TINY and the ONLY one is S.C county! I honestly suggest either moving it to a MUCH larger location, and adding at least 50 more stores, or adding UP a level and adding 50 stores! There ARE some good stores here : Coach, Express, Victoria's Secret and A&F. Your usual stores, but recently they have added "styles for less" etc. I shop here when I can't make it anywhere else. Too bad S.C is such a hippie town they probably wouldn't allow the mall to expand!
