2 reviews for Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe
We ate dinner at the Capitol Reef one night in 10/06. My mushroom lasagna was delicious, prices were reasonable, the interior was cozy and our server was very pleasant (it's also a *very* popular place & there are extremely long waits for orders to be taken, plus Torrey is truly miniscule and consequently there are very few dining options). We liked it so much that we decided to return for breakfast the next morning. As will become apparent if you read some of my reviews, I'm rather obsessed with bread pudding (one reason being the fact that most places don't make it) - so when I noticed on their menu that they had bread pudding, I was *ecstatic*. However, we were totally stuffed from our dinners and there was no way we could have eaten one more bite of food. I asked our server if bread pudding could be ordered at non-dinner times and she said "absolutely; it's always available". I specifically asked about the next day and she assured us it would be available at all times. The next morning arrived and we decided to go there for brunch (at about 11:00 a.m.). In contrast to the night before - when the restaurant was quite crowded - we were the only customers at that point. But from the minute we walked in, the (only) server was unpleasant. I told her how much we'd liked our previous night's dinner and that we'd come back for a breakfast which would include bread pudding. Her: "We don't have any more bread pudding" (said in a rather unpleasant manner). Me: "But our server last night said that you *always* have bread pudding". Her (testily): "We sold all eight servings for breakfast today!" Me: "I don't understand; I specifically told our server we'd be back for some today. I would have told her to have some put aside for us if I'd known". Her: "I already TOLD you; we have NO MORE bread pudding - and who was your server?!" Me: "C....and she was very pleasant". Her: "Well, she doesn't work during the daytime and she doesn't know anything!" Me: "Fine!" Her: "You're too late for breakfast; we don't serve it after certain hours!" Me: "Then I guess we'll have lunch!" At that point I glared at her, and we perused the menu while she disappeared into the kitchen. Under ordinary circumstances I would have left IMMEDIATELY and then I would have contacted the owner at a later time. However, there was nothing else nearby and we already knew the food at the Capitol Reef was delicious & healthy. I needed some serious sustenance at that point and I also had the impression (perhaps erroneous, although I'll never know) that the nasty server might be the owner. Meanwhile, we could hear her talking to the cook. We couldn't discern every word, but she was obviously talking *very* angrily about us (meaning, me). Then the cook said to her (in a much louder voice), "I would have thrown them out of here! Who needs to deal with s--- like that?!" (HUH?! Ya got the wrong person in your aim, buddy!). After reluctantly deciding to stay and eat there, I told my husband that I just hoped the cook wouldn't poison us....meanwhile, a group of four people had arrived and the server couldn't have been *friendlier* to them; it was a rather sickening display of unctiousness. Only when necessary (like when putting our food on the table) did she have anything to do with us - and even then, she totally avoided acknowledging my presence (for example: "do you need anything else?" [directed solely in my husband's direction]. When he said "no, thanks", I was really tempted to turn to her and say "but *I* would sure love some [whatever]"). When it came time to pay the bill, we concurred on leaving her a one-cent tip. My only regret is that we weren't there to hear her screaming about that to the cook.
What a nice find! Steps from our motel, this little town is walkable, and nice to stroll around. The Capitol Reef Cafe is worth the trip alone. Food is freshly prepared, inventive, and it's good. They make their own pies and cobblers, but we were full from dinner and didn't indulge, but they were tempting. The food was good (especially considering the road food we'd endured lately), with a nice 10-vegetable salad and some fresh trout grilled and seasoned to perfection. Our server was pleasant and helpful.
