Review from Anissa T.
We had a wonderful dining experience here. A party of 8 received top-notch service from seating through the check. Our waiter was attentive, quick with explanations and suggestions, and incredibly clever and funny as well.
We had a few appetizers - the calamari, the baked brie, and a shrimp cocktail. I had the spinach salad with the hot bacon dressing, and although it looked to be a perfectly sized portion, I had to stop eating to be sure and have enough appetite for my entree. I had the lamp chops, which were 3 double-cut rib chops. They were good, but a little gristley - I've had better. A fellow diner got the rack of lamp, and I might have enjoyed it more. All the sides were very good and all at the table enjoyed their meal.
The mile-high chocolate cake was a must for the group for dessert. Rich and perfectly decadent - and the waiter made sure that the last 3 bites got put in a tiny to go box just for me.
That's service! -

Classic chophouse menu. Expensive. Have eaten here multiple times due to it's very convenient location near the RDU airport, just off I-40. Easy to get to from nearly anywhere in the Triangle.
Good place for business lunch. Very expensive for dinner with dinner for two with a moderately priced bottle of wine topping $180. For that kind of money there are better dinner dining options. Though steakhouse ambience is good. Waitstaff is usually very good, and steaks cooked correctly. -

Short version: Angus Barn Lite. Perfect if you're on an expense account. Martinis all around!
Alternate version: No lunch salad is worth $14, no matter how good it is.
I'm part of a group of 6-10 folks who meet here regularly for lunch because of its central location. It's a typical high-end chophouse/steak place: dark paneling, wraparound bar, lots of green and red masculine decor--you just know they had brandy and cigars here in "the good old days."
These days, the clientele includes business types of all flavors and techies from nearby RTP. It's in a perfect spot to meet someone who's going to or coming from the airport, which is right around the corner.
The food is good, but pricey. I will say that the service is excellent--attentive without being obnoxious, even when they obviously need the table.
One concern: the dining area is pretty densely packed with tables and chairs. I'm not sure how well someone in a wheelchair would be able to maneuver. I know that one of our hugely pregnant members had trouble! -
Review from Farrah A.
Let me start with saying that they certainly welcome tacky '80s attire.
Our party of 11 slowly arrived for a dinner reservation, and our waitress and her team of assisting staff did an amazing job of hosting our crowd.
After taking drink orders, she then asked if it would be separate checks; and with no hesitation, she catered to the group - happily.
The warm - no, wait, HOT - ciabatta bread and whipped butter won the party over. I'll admit to spoiling my appetite and breaking my "no carbs" diet by eating one ... and a half.
The menu consists of typical steak house fare: steaks, chicken, seafood, sides. But since I haven't indulged in oysters since February (I'm visiting from the Gulf, afterall), I hopped at this opp by ordering a half-dozen chilled, along with ordering their sashimi appetizer. The lobster mac 'n' cheese and other hearty sides were tempting, but I wouldn't dare test the strength of the threads on my old skool velvet dress.
For anyone living/visiting the area or just staying at one of the many nearby hotels, Capital City Chop House is a great dinner option. The wine list was very lengthy, and a gal at our table was raving about her lemon drop martini. Actually, other than that, it was complete silence at our table once the food arrived. Always a good sign.Listed in: The Triangle - Dinner

I'm not one for chop houses or steakhouses.. I like red meat, but find it hard to justify the price for well-cooked chunks of meat. Guess I won't be eating at Angus Barn anytime soon. As it turned out, I didn't order a steak since it was lunch. I had some fish with a wasabi sauce, which was good because of the hint of spice, but pan-seared with a little too much oil.
The location lends itself to business lunch crowd.. near the airport, RTP, and business hotels. The parking lot was so full that I had to park (illegally in the lot next door.. bad ass, I know). Make a reservation for prime lunch time.
3 stars for average food. Maybe next time I'll try a chop. -
Review from Chad E.
We had high-tailed it from Charlotte to Raleigh (okay, Morrisville) to make it in time for our dinner reservation because we like to eat. As it turns out, we were actually the first ones there. It also means that we were able to fill the staff in on just why we had big hair and clothes that probably hadn't been worn in twenty years (except perhaps Nikki's). As it turns out, they were totally down with it and escorted us to a table that would have made King Arthur proud.
As the rest of the crew showed up for the meal, no one batted an eye. At our table, I mean. Other tables in the room finished their meals and cleared out as quickly as they could. It is a nice restaurant, after all. Or was before we got there. As it turns out, the manager-type was a closet fan of hair bands.
He wanted to hear some Ratt. The female server wanted to come to the prom, and her side pony, as mentioned elsewhere, gave her away. She is a not-so-closet child of the 80s, too happy to help us get going on our merry way. Or maybe she just wanted us to get out so they could get regular customers back in.
You might be able to glean from this that the service was excellent, and it really was all around. Many places won't split checks for larger groups, but they had no problem splitting us into the requisite groupings.
The quality of the place is awesome - a bit dark, but it fits the meal well, giving everything a nice ambience. Or that could have been Nikki again. with her glowing neon.
Only a few small mis-steps were had, and it was on the food. It was oh-so-close, however. The ciabatta was crispy on the outside and toasty on the inside. I could have made a meal of it. The lobster mac and cheese was also tasty. Unfortunately the spinach didn't really fit. It's not that I don't like spinach, the textures just didn't match.
The chateaubriand was un-freaking-believable. May have been one of the best I've had recently. Great char on the outside and tender on the inside. The potatoes were great too. Luckily I had no problem with the carbs this night. Unfortunately the asparagus didn't live up to it. Maybe there was just a problem with the green veggies - a run down to the market could have helped, perhaps.
Still, altogether it was awesome. Or tubular, maybe. As they are a chain of sorts, I hope they put together a Queen City Chop House soon.Listed in: 2010-09, Visiting Raleigh NC

Honestly, we had a party of 11 and we were served, paid out, and ready to go on a Friday night (for Prom none the less) in an hour and a half... That's pretty amazing. Did I mention we were dressed in full on 80's attire? Oh yeah...
Our waitress was fantastic, she was on top of everything all night and lighthearted... she even sported a side pony - double bonus! My husband and I had the oysters raw/chilled to start... they were great! Albeit, I prefer mignonette as a garnish, which they didn't have, but they were large oysters and the garnishes they provided worked out just fine. My husband had a delish looking iceberg wedge... I happened to steal a bite and it was crisp and fresh... big enough that had I not been starving I could have had it as an entree! My filet was cooked to perfection and the oscar sauce was a good addition, I was glad the server mentioned that. My husband lamb was also fabulous - the flavor was intense without any obvious marinade that could have overpowered the natural flavor of the lamb. Some friends ordered the sushi appetizer and that also looked heavenly I just thought I would add.
Overall, we all strolled in around 6-6:30ish and we were served two-ish courses and outta there onto the main festivities of the night by 7:30-7:45. I think that is an amazing accomplishment for such a large party, on a Friday night! I'll definately be returning! Thanks for being such great sports for our "prom" dinner! ;)
(Ahh, yes, and might I add, prom is way more fun when you can booze without having to sneak it?!) -

Using the online reservation system tied through Yelp and OpenTable was awesome! Made this experience that much easier. I am amazed that I have lived around here for nearly 30 years and have missed this place. It is a fantastic lunch spot for meeting clients and I intend to return many many times. My food was not as great as I was expecting based on the menu so I am just ranking this as A-OK for now. I intend to go back relatively soon and will update this if the food improves. The decor, location, and service was all spot on for what I need and expect for a business-casual lunch spot.

Great Meat! Needs Seats! Why Salad?
First time at the Chophouse Jan 2003. No reservations. Seated promptly at 6:30PM(Fri) Found the meat (Filet) to be the among best I have had at any place. All other items were of equal quality. I do wonder why a place of this quality would still have a salad bar??? The wait staff was good, but under par for this restaurant. Better timing and attentiveness are required. The seating is a bit cramped for most carnivores. But I would go back again for the food! The Chef(s) are great!
The good things: Great Beef Quality, Exact meal prep., Easy to get to
The bad things: Seat sizing, Wait Staff Training -

Tucked away and off the beaten track for us in the Cary/RTP area. Have dined here five or six times with food and service being consistently above average. The menu is expensive for all being la-carte but there is a tremendous Friday/Saturday night special when there is very little corporate or airport traffic. You must ask about this as there is nothing to alert you to this unless you have received a mailer or know about it.
The Chop House has quite a bit of variety and the seafood and fish are good choices as well. -

Good value if not the best I've ever had. I had the ribeye and blue crab bisque.
The bisque was a little over-seasoned for my taste but still went down very well. The fresh rolls were one of those items that remind you of the simple joys of fresh baked goods.
The steak was off by a degree, medium rare rather than rare, so I deducted a star but I'm not too fussy so I didn't send it back or anything.
If you are staying by the airport or working nearby this is definitely the best option I've found nearby for a business lunch or dinner.
Beats the cracker barrel anyway... -

Good place to get a steak. I got the 10oz filet mignon and it melted in my mouth. I got mine "smothered" with mushrooms and onions but this only included about 4 mushrooms and some onion which could have used a little more time over the heat. My side was creamed spinach and it was unremarkable....not sure what it was but the spinach itself didn't appear to be very tender like it had been sitting out or got dry somehow. The bread they give you is excellent. Ours arrived piping hot and it tasted great with a nice slathering of butter. For an appetizer we got the mozzarella and tomato salad and it was ok but was much better on previous visits. In the past this appetizer came with a stack of sliced cheese, tomato, and onion topped with a balsamic vinaigrette. This time to our surprise it came with a slice of the cheese but the tomato was diced, there was no onion at all, and a lot of lettuce. It was tolerable but nowhere near as good as the version they served on previous visits. My wife got the salmon and fries and was pleased with her meal. We each had 2 alcoholic drinks and no dessert and our bill came to just about $110.
Just a side comment....this is supposed to be a fairly nice restaurant and yet I still see people dragging their kids to this place. Toddlers in crocs is not something I expect to see when dropping benjamin on dinner. Do all of you parents really not understand that there are places where it is inappropriate to bring your kids? Babysitters people.....know them....love them....use them.... -

We had, at best, a mediocre visit. My wife and I were celebrating freedom from our 1 year old daughter (Grandma was visiting from California) and thought we would have a romantic night out. We were seated without a reservation within minutes of arrival. My wife had a coupon from a discount on the meal and the waiter treated us as if we were mooching. Hey, if you don't want people to use coupons, then don't send them to people. Simple.
The server never looked me in the eye and when we informed him that we were seated directly beneath a vent, which made my wife cold. We were given a snooty excuse about the door in the front being open. Who cares. Move us or fix it...that is all we ask.
The food was OK not bad, but not quite worth the prices being charged. If the choice is between Capital City Chop House and Ruth's Chris, or even Outback, you would be better off with the latter two choices.
I ordered a tomato basil and mozzarella salad that arrived with thick cut hot house tomatoes that were about seven days away from being completely ripe. Our steak arrived luke warm and a long time after we ordered it.
Combine a bad day for the server and a salad and steak that both missed their mark and you get a two star rating. I am open to the possibility that the restaurant was just having an off night...but I will not be returning to find out. Oh well. -

I walked in for lunch and was pleased with the experience. I went with a little lighter fare and selected a fish dish which was well prepared. The cole slaw was particularly good. Overall the experience was a positive one.

I had lunch here with a few coworkers and my husband. It's a good choice for lunch...$9-$15 for most lunch entree choices, all of which are huge! I had a grilled chicken sandwich (all sandwiches are served with one side), while others in my party had the fried flounder, the meatloaf & the tilapia (entrees come with two sides). Service is prompt and efficient. I think this is the perfect place for a nice business luncheon or for entertaining customers around the lunch hour.
I don't think it's the environment I'd want for a romantic dinner out with my husband, but it makes for a tasty, filling lunch in a nice environment. -

Both times I've been to Capital City I have been impressed with both the service and the food. One thing to note, though, is that I've never actually had a steak here!
Having come from the coast, I tend to be disappointed with the seafood in the Raleigh/Durham area, but Capital City delivers in this area. The crab cakes here are phenomenal, and were cooked to perfection when I had them. The rack of lamb was also quite impressive as the sauce was probably the best I've had on lamb.
My biggest complaint about Capital City is that for the money, the portions are rather small. When paying $30+ for a rack of lamb, I'd actually like a rack of lamb, but not here. You really have to have an appetizer to leave feeling full, which is another $15-20 added onto the bill. -

This restaurant was suggested to us as a good place for my husband and I to celebrate closing on our new house. It is apparently so popular that we couldn't even get in for that evening, and it was a Monday night! We had to make reservations for the next night. Was it worth the wait? I'm sorry to say, no. For all the hype (as well as the price) I expected something a little "nicer". Some tablecloths maybe. And actual tables with chairs, rather than rows of booths like a fast food joint. The food was Ok. Not bad at all, but not memorable either. Would I eat there again? Probably, due to its convenience to our house. But it would not be my first choice for a special occassion or if I wanted to take someone out and impress them.

Not one for red meat, I ended up not ordering steak at the steakhouse. But I wasn't at all disappointed with that decision -- turns out, Capital City does justice to non-steak items as well! I had the shashimi appetizer as my entree. Having seen a jokingly minuscule portion of this app in San Francisco recently, I asked the waitress if it was large enough to make a meal out of it. She assured me it was -- but I wasn't expecting it to be as big as it was (welcome to the South!). The slices were thick, smooth and fresh, and served in a lovely display encircling the plate. We had a group of 10 -- that ended up being 11 -- but the staff handled my reservation and the surprise +1 with ease. They turned our table pretty speedily too considering we were a boggle of separate checks, drink, apps and entrees! The atmosphere here is very Biltmore Estate cigar lounge-like -- carved wood paneling, heavy oak tables, etc. I think it gets overlooked or brushed off being close to the airport and a gaggle of hotels, perhaps also due to it's 20+ price-range, and possibly even its proximity to Angus Barn. But hopefully Yelp can help bring it to better light -- I think it's deserving of more street cred!

I went here for a business dinner and it was quite good. I started with a City Chopped Salad. For the entree, I had the Almond Toasted Tilapia with steamed vegetables it was a decent meal. I probably should have ordered meat since everyone else did but I was pretty satisfied. For the most part, it's one of those places where you entertain guests or colleagues. I would definitely recommend it if you're in town.

Trying to facilitate a lunch between friends, colleagues, prospects and/or customers spread throughout the Triangle? Look no further -- the Capitol Chop House should be your first choice. Yes, the location is very central no matter where you come from, but what is even better is the great atmosphere and outstanding (and reasonably priced) food. You need reservations though around lunch.
