Best Picnic Treat: One of the Best crab cakes ever!!!!!

So, my most wonderful date for West Fest informed me that she would be grabbing snacks and drinks, cool right? Even better than cool. She shows up with a sack full of goodies from Canyon Market.

2 deli Sandwiches - Roast Turkey and a Black Forest Ham - A+
Crab Cake - A++++++++++++++++
Bottle of Rose Wine - A+

We even made a few friends. One being a conspiracy nut who is running from the mob and who was accompanied by a cute German Shepard named Chandler. Oddly, enough, I cant remember the guys name.

So, I cannot give them 5 stars as I have never actually been to the store, but I will be soon, maybe tonight even.

Great pre-made foods, awesome cheese selection that they will cut to order, decent  bulk section and great customer service. Only thing stopping this from being a 5 star place is that some of the prices are kinda high.

All in all, I like Canyon Market and always come back.

My go to local healthy food store. When I can't get to Rainbow (which is 3 out of 4 weeks of the month) I go to Canyon.

I love the olives in the salad bar and the nice variety of breads.

The chai at the coffee bar is the best!

I've really tried hard to like this place -- I've lived in Glen Park for the past two years and have shopped here regularly.  Sure, the prices are a little higher, but I  was able to overlook that in favor of the convenient location and the fact that I love the idea of supporting local businesses.

Today I went in, like any other day, and was treated to pretty much the rudest cashier ever.  It's one thing when a cashier doesn't say hi or whatever, but this lady rang up half of my groceries, stopped, said to another cashier to finish it up, and then walked away without saying anything to me.  I had to sit there and wait for the other cashier to finish his order and then finish up mine.  This was a good way to double the amount of time I had to spend at the store.

I don't know what her problem was since she didn't say anything or even make eye contact with me.  I've never been treated this way before and was very confused -- maybe she was busy, I don't know.  I just know she didn't offer the courtesy of saying so.  I also know it was a disturbing coincidence that I was the only person of color in line and that I was the only one treated that way.  What I know for sure is that I won't be going out of my way to shop here anymore.

I like Canyon Market because it's close to where I pick up my CSA veggies and I can turn in raw milk bottles there. I can also get some staples that I can't find anywhere else.

However, the prices will kill you. $11 for a lb. of butter? I can buy raw milk butter, from across the nation, for the same price. The milk is almost 1.25 more for the same price I get from my grocery co-op - for a QUART.

I do love the selection of meats and the chicken is in a range I can afford. I just can't afford much else. They have a good salad bar and their selection for the on-the-go crowd isn't bad. It's just pretty pricy over all.

Like Rebecca, I really did want to like this place a lot. It has a philosophy and culture that I would like to support. Fiscally, I can't do it that often.

My only other comment has to do with the service. Everytime I come there, there are three or four people at the registers, generally talking with one another. They usually step up to help me within 30 seconds to a minute, but I always feel as if I'm intruding on them. It's not terribly welcoming and it's certainly not good customer service. The people behind the meat counters are generally fast and on it. It's the register people that seem to have a difficult time being "on."

I'm going to give them a few more chances and then, it's the bare minimum to return my bottles.

P.S. A wheelchair might be able to get INTO the store but not move through it at all.

This place is decent.  It's the best place to buy food in Glen Park, but that's not saying much.  They do have a good selection and lots of unique foods, but the prices are a little high.  Example: you can get a loaf of apple bread there for $6.95.  That exact same loaf of bread is available at the Alemany Farmer's Market (by request only) for $4.50.  It's a little bit of a markup, but then again, that's why I like Farmer's Markets.

I don't recommend doing your full-fledged grocery shopping here, but if you're in the area and need to pick some things up for dinner, it's a pretty good option.

Fabulous sandwiches that are made to order.

My school had a Teachers Retreat day and we ordered sandwiches from here, and my goodness they were delicious. I ordered a hot roast beef and swiss on a baguette. YUM! I usually am not a fan of mustard but the ones used in the sanwich was spicy and grainy and it complemented the sandwich very well. I was only able to eat half, and save the other half for later ( 'twas large!).

I will be visiting you Canyon Market on my 2 week break, you'd better believe it!

It's a good thing I don't do all my grocery shopping here, because if I did, I'd either be broke or hungry. I will roll through here every few weeks to pick up whatever I need at the time. I've never left without something from the prepared foods counter. They've got lots of yummy items. Staff is very friendly and helpful as well.

Upping my original rating to the full five stars. Recently moved back to the neighborhood and have rediscovered Canyon Market. The deli here is flat-out awesome. Great sandwiches and tasty prepared food. Yes, it's still expensive, but it's not really for your everyday grocery shopping needs. Love having it in the neighborhood.

I'm surprised by the mixed reviews (i blame this on the demographics of the neighborhood)
Overall this is a GREAT market!

Good:
Independently owned
Produce - decent, mostly organic, wide variety
meat- excellent- from small local farms, varies weekly
bakery- they make fresh bread and sweets daily on site
staples-very good quality (beans, pasta, canned goods)
household (green cleaners, compostable trash bags)
deli (great premade foods, crabcakes, salads, sanwhiches to order)
staff- staff in the deli are knowledgable, even reccoment cooking instuctions
Booze- they cary a great selection of varied wines, beers, and spirits

Bad
Very expensive!
Seems the staff are overworked (behind the deli cooking, so often I have to wait to be helped)

This is really a great store!  They are as PC as SF can be (more so than Rainbow).  I only shop here for certain things (meat, fish) for i like farmers markets, and it can be expensive.

But as I tell people this store pretty much has the best of the best- pretty impressive for a small independenly owned market!

I could go on and on- the outdoor seating, dog friendly, wine bar, sald bar, coffee bar, they have most exotic products I look for (oils, spices), natural soaps, but the local small farm meats are what I really appreciate.

I think the bad reviews reflect the demographics of the hood (spoiled rich San Franciscans (that don't appreciate or know about local food products).

kudos to canyon market

I'd give 5 stars but your service needs improving, and some of your prices

We are sooo lucky to have such a store!

What couldnt you love about this adorable market? The staff is super friendly, knowledgable, and outgoing. The true gem of the store is the cheese selection! The cheeses are reasonably priced, varied in textures as well as tastes, and everything can be cut down to order. Now thats my idea of an amazing cheese shopping experience.

Firstly, the guy who made my veggie sandwich was so nice; he seemed quite genuine, even talking to me about this bad smell and explaining that it was coming from a cheese that had been micorwaved.  He even assured me that my sandwich would be tasty as he handed it to me.  Oh, and the big nice thing was that he let me take a moment to end my cell phone call before he started asking me for my order...tx guy (he was a Black/White mix and I didn't catch his name.)  Unfortunately, the sandwich was good, but not quite right.  Maybe because of the avocado and havarti?  I just know that I was hungry when it was gone, and I like a sandwich to make me feel full.

Okay, for the sucky part.  I asked the lady who rang me up for a separate bag for my dishwashing fluid.  What did she do?  She put the stuff in a really thin brown bag that would NOT safeguard against leaks and then put this in my bag of groceries.  As I was walking home, I also noticed that she put the dishwashing fluid UPSIDE DOWN in the thin little brown bag which was in my main brown bag of groceries...and you know what, found out later that they had plastic bags!!!  ugggh.  When cleaning solutions are not kept separate, they can and have leaked all over the place.

And sucky part 2...So I thought that at least a cupcake or 2 from their bakery would be nice to relax to, at home, and I was soooo wrong.  They were not very flavorful at all; I felt like I was eating just creamy fat as the frosting.  I've  had better cupcakes that weren't marketed all fancy either.  $7.95 for 4 cupcakes for no flavor and plenty of calories!

I go to Canyon because it's a convenient jaunt (that's right, used that word) from the BART station, but perhaps I should have gotten my butt in gear and driven to the Safeway on Mission St. or in Diamond Heights.

I get in my car to drive to Canyon Market rather than walk down the street to Molly Stones. Normally i only buy produce here (lots of organic and much cheaper than molly stones), but today i grabbed a baguette on the way out. It was still warm from the oven. Pretty hard to top that.

People who work there are great, and there is a lot in this fairly small store. Surprised to see so many rough reviews.

Reiterating what I said last time.  In a pinch I picked up some salsa here for a party ($12 for a pint or so.. bastards) and got "Juanita's salsa roja."  More like salsa agua.  This overpriced, watery crap came from someone the owners supposedly know, as they have a little note reminding you how your patronage supports the hardworking local salsa lady *sniff.*

Seriously, screw this place - I've been quite a few times, every time feeling burned after leaving.

After living in GP for several years without a close grocery, I was pretty stoked at the idea of the market.

But after two+ years, I've learned to take my money elsewhere if I can possibly help it. Yes, they have a good salad bar, but the price seems to go up every couple weeks, along with everything else in the store. $7 for a box of Cheerios? Are you f*ing kidding me???

The signage prices rarely match what rings at the register, and the clerks could care less. The cashiers are perpetually rude to customers, and more interested in talking amongst themselves. There are a few who are super nice and helpful, but the turnover of staff is so high they'll probably be gone soon.

The thought of fresh bread is exciting, but unfortunately the quality is wildly inconsistent. Some days it will be fresh and golden brown, and some it will be undercooked, pasty white, and stale. I now make the walk up to Destination Bakery or the Cheese Shop because the bread is always perfect and fresh daily.

Agree with the overpriced assessment as well. Saw a box of clementine 'cuties' priced at $14.99!! With Safeway a five minute bus ride up the hill, I'll gladly wait on the 52 to save myself $8.

The coffee is subpar, and again, the baristas seem to have no clue how to brew decently.

The premade food at the deli is pretty good in some cases, but the 'hot' sandwiches consist of overly toasted bread trying to compensate for cold interiors. So I tried asking them to heat the middle, and they refused. At $7.50, I think I should be allowed to have what I want, despite the fact the workers are obviously irritated someone asked them to do something.

And further to all this: There are already three coffee shops in the neighborhood cranking out excellent brew and pastries. The Cheese Shop has better prices, and a better selection, and will cut to order instead of forcing precut, presized, and prewrapped (who knows when) wedges on patrons. Destination Bakery makes their own amazing desserts instead of farming out the department to the lowest cost available.

All in all, save your money. Shop a store that practices what they preach instead of selling an idea.

PLUS
-they carry the most awesome yogurts (my fave is Liberte, omg yum!!)
-they carry the best white anchovies that Pizette 211 uses on their pizzas
-great hot soups near the salad bar
-yummy salsa lady stuff (can't remember if it's the guac or salsa that I like)
-Nicole's divine crackers
-eco-friendly house supplies like detergents
-convenient location

MINUS
-the potatoes in the salad bar are consistently undercooked
-not a fan of their desserts (cupcakes and small cheesecakes) near the bakery, nor their prepared foods at the deli
-early closing time

We totally lucked out getting this place as a neighborhood market and as a neighbor. It seems the owners or managers (one and the same?) are well-meaning and need to work out some minor kinks.

At these prices they should not be using an OLD, USED DIAPER CHANGING TABLE to display food. (09/22/2009) YUCK. What's next? A toilet to hold the salad bar items? I'm all for reducing, reusing and recycling but furniture made to deal with feces should not be reused for food.
I really wanted to like this place. Really.
But the prices are sky high. The salad bar items look like they've been in the bins for day. The variety never changes.
The staff is snotty including the owner.  There's just not much to like except the location under the new library. It's a shame I don't want to shop there.

This place is convenient if you live in Glen Park and you're into healthy food and you need something really quick. However, ideally I'll make the time to drive to rainbow or somewhere else for my main groceries because this place is really overpriced, like other people have mentioned.

However, they do have great quality dairy and pasture-fed meats.  Their bulk section is pretty small, their produce is ok.  They don't carry some more specialty things I think they should, but the staff do seem responsive to suggestions.  I wouldn't do my regular everyday shopping here, but I"m glad it's around.

With mom and pop markets that cater to city dwellers who want their organic, local produce, it's a given that everything is going to be expensive. That's where your choice of shopping at markets like this, or safeway comes in (and hey, I've got no problem with shopping at safeway). Yeah, Canyon Market is expensive. But they've got some awesome looking deli/prepared food items. The baked goods look great and I definitely want to stop in for a sandwich the next time I'm in town. The egg salad and prosciutto and marinated artichoke and avocado sandwiches sound amazing!

I really love the fact that Canyon Market is an 8-minute drive from my workplace. Otherwise, I would likely starve to death or be forced to eat crap. Okay not really, but it's a great place to grab a quick healthy bite. I know, I know it's overpriced but really, what isn't in San Francisco? Would I shop there for my groceries on a regular basis? No, but, I can always count on Canyon Market for a healthy made-to-order sandwich, fresh homemade soups and a few yummy snacks for the drive home.

If parking out front, just don't forget to feed the meter (nowadays a ticket will run you $50).

While it's incredibly useful to have a supermarket just across from GP BART, I have to say that Canyon Market is damn expensive and products never seem to go on sale.

Most of my purchases have been produce related, bought just before I head home to make dinner.  Most of the fruit and veggies are organic and good quality, but I always try to limit myself to absolute necessities so I don't feel like I'm getting shortchanged.

I do appreciate their deli counter where you can pick up a wide variety of cooked items as well as made-to-order sandwiches. Their sandwiches range between $7 - $8, which is reasonable. For baked goods and baguettes, I much prefer Destination Bakery.

Nice to have an independently owned market here, just wish it were a little cheaper.

I have a feeling I'm gonna be shopping here a lot.

I just moved to Diamond Heights and this place is a block from the Glen Park BART Station so its easy to stop in here between getting off BART and hopping on the 52 to schlep me up the hill.

Prepared foods are so helpful when you work a lot and don't have the time or energy to cook.  The yummy salad bar is chock full of great options.  They have a nice, small fairly reasonably priced wine selection.  And they carry Stubbs marinades and sauces which I love.

I really wanted to like Canyon Market. It is close to my house and has organic produce. True, everything is scandalously overpriced but I was willing to overlook this. However, FOUR times they have sold me products that turned out to be old, moldy or just stale. I bought "fresh" mozzarella that was hard, crusty and sour. The shaved parm. is likewise crusty and inedible. I have bought seemingly decent purple kale, only to notice translucent rotten bits on the inner leaves. I have found a considerable amount of mold on the shitake mushrooms. I just don't understand how they can charge so much and deliver such poor quality products.

Why is Canyon Market in Glen Park?  It would be better suited in Laurel Heights with the prices they charge...I mean ridiculous.  Granted they have some nice sandwiches from the deli counter but if you live in Glen Park and need anything you are wasting your time.  Climb in your car and drive to either Safeway in Diamond Heights (if they have what you need) or better yet drive to the closest Trader Joe's

This place seriously needs better pricing and management.  I mean this is GLEN PARK!

I can't see myself shopping there again anytime soon!

Good point: nice natural market in the home towny feelin' Glen Park
Bad point: pricey. like. wow.

They mark their wines up almost as much as restaurants (250%). So if you like a wine at Trader Joe's for $8.99, then expect it to be around $21.99 at the Canyon Market.

Everything else is fresh and nice. Just not recommended for staples (like wine ;)

I love this little market.  Like others have said, my first time in I thought it was way too small, not much in there and WAY expensive.  A few weeks later I realized they were not fully stocked or set up yet and that I should have given them a chance.

So glad the hub and I went back.  I LOVE the homemade soups!  My faves are the Chicken Tortilla and Chicken Veggie with different pastas.  Sometimes rizzoto, sometimes elbow, etc. My dad LOVED the 7 Seas Fish soup.  I mentioned to him that it sounded gross to me and he said his grandma used to make fish soup and asked me to get him some next time they had a pot.  Again, he LOVED it.  I did taste it, and it was good.  BIG chunks of salmon!   And their fresh baked rolls to got with it?  Yummy.

The hub and I are now regulars Saturday and Sunday morning at their little coffee corner.  Having been a fan of Martha's for years on Cortland, we still are but the LINE was becoming such a pain and pretty much a bad way to start a day.  (can we say GROUCH inducing?)  So we decided to try Canyon one morning months ago, and still are never in line behind more than two people...if any.  And their pastry?  Omg!  Most is made there, a few things I saw a little sign of what bakery it's from.  I have had to stay away from that little glass case.  Too many of their chocolate croissants have ended up on my ass.

Yes, it's a little expensive, but I like the things I like so I pay.  I agree I wouldn't do my shopping there.  It's kind of like a "gourmet" or "need a couple things and don't want to go to Safeway" store.

As far as the meat/butcher?  Never bought anything because to be honest?  Some of the meat?  Looks like it's been there way too long.  I am really picky about my meat, poultry and fish, and so far have seen nothing appetizing in their cases.  I admit, I don't look at it often when in there due to not being interested...so I have no idea if it's improved...or just had a bad day or two.

I'm giving this place one star because I can't give zero stars.  Everything is way too expensive and the workers are rude.  Basically this place just sucks, it is way too over priced, and everything here could be found at Trader Joe's. Nothing special at Canyon Market.
You could probably find better customer service at a local Safeway.

This market has been a welcome upgrade to food choices in Glen Park. It offers a great array of interesting imports, but it's really a high-end deli and convenience store more than a grocery. The higher prices are understandable given the location and the ever-improving preferences of the locals. But the fresh produce selection is sorely limited, and the quality not great. I don't buy any produce I won't use immediately, and frankly prefer to go to other stores with a greater variety that won't turn bad in a day (like their salad greens). I hate to say it, but Safeway presents a better produce section. The cheese selection is sophisticated, and the meat counter a good option. All told, it's a good addition to Glen Park, but not a family-affordable food shopping destination. And one more thing, I can't say I like the kids seeing some of the freaky looking people who work the checkout.

Being a life-long GP resident, I had high hopes for this new market.  When they first opened, I gave them the benefit of the doubt when I encountered overpricing, limited selection and rude customer service.  When the owner asked my opinion about what type of items he should carry, I stayed hopeful and continued to shop.  The only shining light was the butcher case. Seriously, how many types of cheese does one store need to carry? Especially when there's an excellent cheese shop a few feet away (and their hummus and deli items are so much better than canyons).
After nearly 2 years, the owners should have gotten it right but sadly, the selection is minimal, prices outrageous and the clerks remain rude and uninformed.

I stopped by this little market while waiting for the bus, so BF and I decided to pick up some food for dinner. There is a great salad bar, a great list of organic fruits and vegetables. I love their prepared deli section.  It took me awhile to figure out what to get.  We finally picked up a rotisserie chicken, some organic crackers and cheese.  BTW, there is a great selection of cheeses. I also love their selection of cracker/chip dips and ready to cook pasta/sauces. The only thing is it's a little pricey, but otherwise a great neighborhood grocery store.

I was really excited when this place opened, living up the hill from there and having nothing but the crummy Monterey St Safeway on the other side to satisfy grocery needs.  It's a huge plus having a natural/gourmet grocery just a few steps away.

Pros:
- Nice fresh salad bar
- Tasty deli counter with lots of fresh options including fish, meats, pastas, etc
- Good selection of cheeses and meats, plus breads (though a bit more in that dept would be nice)
- High quality organic (and some non organic) produce
- Good selections of natural pre packaged foods
- Very friendly staff (I don't know what that person above is talking about, I've found all the peeps who work here  really nice)
- Good frozen offerings, including desserts, including vegan (even some Maggie Mudd's!)

Cons:
- Way overpriced. I know the rent is probably expensive for that neighborhood, or whatever, but it feels like literally everything in the store is about 1-2 dollars more than it is at other similar markets. (Granted, you can't get a lot of these things at Safeway, and when you can, like Amy's Frozen Meals, they're usually overpriced too.) But at least Safeway has stuff on sale.  Even small things like sesame noodle salad, which is tasty enough but not that much to it, is really pricey.
- Fairly small pasta selection (and again, it's overpriced).
- Would be nice to have a few more pre-made sandwiches
- Less important but it would be nice if they had a few more non-food gift items, like cards, candles, that sort of thing t hat you can find in variety at Rainbow. They have a few and I don't expect a ton in a smallish store, but that could use expanding.
- More cereal, too

Overall, it's a treat to have in the neighborhood, and if you pick and choose what you buy and don't do all your shopping there you won't go broke and will get some healthy, delicious food.  Occasionally I'll go to Rainbow for a bigger natural/gourmet shop, which is a bit less pricey.  But I'm glad Canyon is in my neighborhood.

I'm in there at least a few times a week. Great neighborhood market. Richard (the owner) is very cool, and I've had excellent customer service when I've needed attention/had questions.

My shopping goes something like this:
Staples - Trader Shoes (milk, bread, butter, cereal, cheese, canned goods, etc.)
Produce - Alemany Farmers Market
Meat/Fish - Canyon or similar market

So, I typically am in there to grab the entree to be cooked...the fresh fish. grass fed beef, or other fresh meats. I have no problem paying premium for a higher quality fish/meat product - which is what you get at Canyon. (Specifically, the grass fed steaks and pork chops have been highlights.) I will sometimes pick up the fresh breads and prepared foods which are also nice.

The fruits/vegetables do tend to be quite pricey but in a pinch, do the trick.

For a neighborhood market, I think we lucked out by getting a place like Canyon!

Canyon Market is a nice neighborhood grocery store, on the high-end, gourmet side of the spectrum.  There's no parking lot, but in Glen Park you can usually find some sort of street parking nearby.

Here you'll find organic produce, a limited, but respectable wine selection, meat and sea food counter (I noticed they had goat! I need to try that sometime - note to self), salad bar, olive bar, soups, good selection of cheeses, and other gourmet food items.

This isn't a place you'd do all your shopping (at least not the ideal place), nor is it a place to get great bargains, or necessarily a place you'll find obscure things, and there's likely not much point going out of your way to get here.

However, if you are entertaining, or bringing things to a dinner party, and nearby, Canyon Market is a convenient place to pick up quality goods.

I was going to a party, and needing to bring some last minute items (wine, snacks, tea, etc.). It was easy to find the stuff I needed, and checkout was fast and friendly.  And, yeah, it was pricey, but going to Trader Joe's is not always an option. (and to be fair, Trader Joe's may have a larger selection of wines at better prices, but things like produce and meats are far superior at Canyon Market)

I would live here if the rent weren't so high.
No, for real-- it really is great.  Wonderful, fresh and organic produce, and a fantastic meat department.  The prices kill me sometimes, though.  Once I ordered a piece of fresh raw salmon from the meat department to take home to cook for dinner.  When I got to the cash register, the man rang me up and the bill was $32.00!  For one piece of wild salmon.  Wow... I had to take it back to the meat department.
The other thing that they are missing sometimes are their selection of fresh herbs.
Overall, like I said earlier, I would live here if the rent weren't so high.

Canyon Market, you can totally tongue my balls.
OVERPRICED, with a limited selection of items, pseudo-upscale market.
And I like upscale markets, but this one has all of 4 shelves. SHELVES!  Not even AISLES, SHELVES.
EVERY time I go, (the only Market in my neighborhood), I have to retool my meal plans, since it NEVER has exactly what I'm looking for.
Plus it has Mollie Stone prices.
I really wish there were a better market around.
One with better a better selection to justify the price.

My 4 stars are almost completely a result of the salad bar, which actually has chicken that is not slimy and oddly-colored. Since moving to San Francisco 2 years ago, I have been searching far and wide for a decent salad bar.  Is this a little insane?  Quite possibly, but that's just who I am.

As far as being overpriced, well it is an upscale market and you probably shouldn't do your regular shopping there.  So yeah, if you load up your cart, then don't be surprised when the bill is high.

Finally, as far as the customer service at the counter that everyone keeps complaining about, who cares?  I would never even notice that unless they were overtly insulting.  Just relax people.
