One person told me that this place was terrible. Then, another person told me it is the best breakfast he had ever had. So, I had to go decide for myself.
I'm gonna lean toward the guy who likes it. Not the best breakfast I've ever had (see the Roxy in Portland), but pretty darn good. Watch out--the portions are enormous. I'm not one to leave food on the plate, but there was enough food left on that plate for another breakfast. And, I was too stuffed to move. Great bacon. This place puts the greasy in greasy spoon, and I mean that in a very good way. And, the staff was wonderful!
i have lived in 'the hood' for the past 7 years & waiting & hoping this diner will get better.
it take a greasy spoon to a whole nother level-
when one orders a spinach, mushroom, cheese omlet (especially living in napa county) one would expect fresh produce. i was totally dissapointed to get canned mushrooms & spinach . i have given this 3 chances, & wont return until the day i see the sign 'under new management'
Ate here this morning. Very disappointed. Hash browns not cooked all the way. Waffle cold. Although the wait staff was friendly, found it difficult to have a conversation due to the constant interruptions. Won't be back. Very sad as all I've heard were good things about the place.
Ate lunch here with a co-worker on our way back to the office after job in Napa! Fun little diner is a great greasy-spoon kinda place with many seemingly local guests. This place is so lax that one of the servers was actually eating her lunch behind the counter while chatting with a patron on the other side. Cool. All of the servers I encountered were friendly and happy to make us as comfortable as possible! I ordered a Tuna Melt, my way! Sliced Sourdough bread with Cheddar Cheese! instead of the American Blah. The tuna salad wasn't too bad, and covered in cheese was quite edible! I also chose a cup of soup instead of fries which was GREAT because they had Navy Bean and it was good, though it was probably just barely less fattening than the fries! Mmmm! The bread was perfectly fried *crisp* but not burnt and even after getting to the second half, it wasn't soggy like some grilled sandwiches can get sitting on the plate! I plan to eat here again next time I am in the area and in the mood for the classic low-budget diner experience!
I know I'm not the best person to write a review on a diner considering grease and my stomach can't hang together for more than an hour. However, after a long day of tasting in the valley - my body needed something to soak it up the morning after.
Amazingly enough, you can drive from Sonoma to Fairfield and only see about three places to eat, two of which are Jack in a Crack. So we pulled off here not so much out of curiosity or hunger but sheer desperation. I had the turkey and cheese grilled sandwich, my bf had the club. Both were exactly what you'd picture them to be after walking into the place and realizing that most of the people have been sitting in there for about 10+ years - complete with butt indentations in the booths.
The grease was way too much, and the iceberg lettuce gave the club the familiar sandwich crunch from '85 - back when we all believed it was the way to eat "healthy." Coffee tastes much like dirt but with even less flavor. My favorite part - the waitress smelled of bourbon when she talked to us.....
Went here with Jen for breakfast. Good old American style breakfast. Eggs were good, large portions, and the ground beef steak was good too. Homely feeling. Recommend it for breakfast in the area.
Foul. That's the word that comes to mind when I reluctantly think back on my horror-filled experience at Canyon Cafe. I had been warned by my boyfriend that everything about it was awful, but when his dad offered to take us to lunch, we were too polite to refuse in favor of an actual restaurant. I wish we had been more rude.
The whole place was dingy and had an air of greasiness. The waitress was wearing the most putrid old lady perfume I had smelled in years, and was so strong I could taste it. I ordered a BLT, that was slathered with about a pound of mayonnaise, and served on stale bread. I took only a few bites before noticing that the bacon looked and tasted like solid brown grease. Not even flavorful solid brown grease. I soon gave up on it, and had a bite of my daughter's chicken, which was dry inside and greasy outside. Oh well. I wasn't that hungry anyway. Pops seemed to be enjoying his turkey melt, but he works in construction and would probably eat anything that was placed in front of him.
When I got home, apparently my stomach decided that even a few bites of the disgusting sandwich had been too much, and I was sick for about 4 hours.
Stay away.
Best diner in the area..
Get the Jerry Special.. The owner Ali is as cool as it gets when it comes to local diner owners that sit and get to know the customers.
We went for breakfast at this small diner/cafe on Highway 29 just past Safeway (1 stoplight, and 1 u-turn).
I enjoyed a 3 egg breakfast with corned beef hash, country potatoes with onions and bell peppers and an english muffin. Though a wee bit old, the place was clean and everyone was cheerful and friendly.
In term of greasy spoon, the Canyon Cafe is easy enough to miss... It's on the wrong side of Sonoma Blvd so people rushing to Napa Valley for their weekly dose of terroir won't even see this little joint on the West side of 29.
Then again, maybe it's just as well... While this place is pretty popular with the old school crowd, I wander if the adage "You can't teach an old dog new trick," is what's required to keep people coming here.
Personally, I'll take a breakfast at Buttercup, Nation's, or of course Gilliwood's up in Napa before I eat here again.
Like Applebees but with service from women you can tell are experts beyond expertise and food that was actually prepared by a human. The place is rather interesting, it's one of the few remnants from when American Canyon was just a Cafe, gas station and three stop lights. A nostalgia factor is there as it's never changed in the 21 years I've been in Napa.
The food is pretty good and pretty well priced. They do have wine but the menu doesn't say where it's from or what vintage it is, not that you'd really want to drink wine here, not the right type of place.
