I think we found our neighborhood Chinese restaurant.
The day after thanksgiving and I didn't want to look at a piece of turkey, stuffing, or mashed potatoes and gravy. Three Thanksgiving meals down, one to go. So, we decided to get dim sum to offset the heavy food we had been eating all week.
We were on our way to City View in the financial district when I realized it was already 1:30. I looked on Yelp and found this place. It was closeby so we headed there. Walked in, was seated right away, and the dim sum carts were in full swing...
Solid dim sum...and they have Shanghai dumplings (my favorite!) They were out of egg custard though, but the server suggested mango pudding which was DELICIOUS!!!
Definitely will go back for dim sum and for regular Chinese food. I've also heard they have a counter that sells dim sum during the week so if you work in the area, it's a great lunch spot.
Some of the items I tend to love on dim sum such as chinese broccoli and clams are actually a bit more expensive (by like a dollar). Their clams with black bean sauce are okay. I think they add ginger to it which I've never had any place do that before.
Their sesame balls are awesome! Their fried shrimp balls are okay. The ho kai and shu mai are like any other place. It's a good place to go to since I live right down the street.
Canton is our go to spot for dim sum in the SOMA area. I actually think this is the only dim sum restaurant in SOMA.
The service during tea time is great, especially compared to other Chinese dim sum restaurants. The cart ladies, the waiters/bus boys, and the managers/owners are all very attentive. Some of the soy from our shrimp noodle roll spilled onto the able and one of the staff added extra paper lining so we don't have to eat in a soy sauce mess.
The food can be a hit or miss.
Hits:
Pan fried chive dumplings - I'm surprised, really surprised, how good they did this dish; it's one of my favorite dim sum dishes
Har Gau (Shrimp Dumpling)
Siu Mai (Pork Dumpling)
Shrimp rice noodle rolls
Phoenix talons (chicken feet marinated in black bean sauce) - Flavorful and tender
Lotus leaf rice - Flavorful and moist
Misses:
Xia Long Bao (Shanghai Dumpings) - The vinegar served with the dumplings was overly sweet or else the XLB would have been a hit
Taro dumpling - Bland and lacks taro flavor
Tofu skin roll (vegetarian) - Bland as well and not enough gravy
Spare ribs - Too much cornstarch
Mango pudding - Way too sweet. Evaporated milk did nothing for it. No fresh chunks of mango either.
Prices are decent, more expensive than Chinatown but less expensive than the big names like Koi Palace, Yank Sing, or Cityview.
My only complaint? I speculate that they use a lot of MSG. I'm always in a food coma, dying of thirst, after every meal.
I have been in and out of this place for at least 10 years, dropping in when something is going on at the Moscone Center/SOMA or on the weekend for lunch. I believe that this is the best dim sum in San Francisco, although the competition is keen with the more "formulaic" restaurants like Yank Sing. Dim sum always tastes fresh and not like it has sat around for a few days and been reheated (that's Mings in Palo Alto). Also, the dim sum is served pretty quickly and the ladies pass by regularly to fill second round orders. A bit on the expensive side, but no more than competitors. The easiest times are weekdays lunch, but Sunday lunch (although crowded) has easy parking and is also a fun experience for 2 or 12.
This is my favorite dim sum place in SF. I'm by no means an aficionado, but having lived here for 10+ years it's hard to not form an opinion. I'm told by those in the know that this is just what it's like in Hong Kong. During busier times (e.g. - weekend brunch), there are numerous carts with a huge array of the usual staples.
I like coming here because I don't have to deal with Chinatown, and because it's not as sterile as Yank Sing. While the service and quality of food at Yank Sing may be slightly better, the ambiance there detracts from the experience.
Unlike many of the other dim sum specialists in the city, Canton also has a full menu (in English and in Cantonese). They also specialize in a variety of fresh seafood dishes that I'm told aren't available anywhere but in HK. There is an entire wall filled with tanks for the various live sea creatures.
I can tell you where to go for dim sum in Chinatown, Oakland. I can even tell you where to go in San Jose now. But I had no idea where to go in San Francisco.
A couple months ago, the boyfriend and I took the trolley to the heart of Chinatown,SF and ended up getting dim sum dishes at a hole in the wall. FAIL.
So this time around, the morning after celebrating a friend's birthday, we searched on Yelp for rec's.
We chose this one because it had A LOT of reviews already and it was within walking distance of our hotel. I liked that it was a big restaurant and there was no wait at all! It was so dead that there was actually only 1 cart.
But the solo cart did the trick.
The food was good. 3.5 stars. Nothing out of this world but satisfied my dim sum cravings. I got to eat all my favs:
Sticky Rice
beef noodle roll
har gau
siu mai
taro dumpling
dumplings with vinegar
(i didn't see beef tripe)
They earned the last .5 star because with ALLLLLL the food we had, it was only $10/person.
(along with my favs, there was also chow fun, porridge, wonton soup, custard tards, chicken feet, etc...)
This is our go to spot for Dim Sum because quite frankly besides Yank Sing which is way more expensive, this is the only dim sum place in SOMA. The dim sum is ok. Some things are good and some things are just average. GF and I love the duck sandwich things but she found the duck to be too fatty. I liked it although it was slightly greasy I still really enjoyed it.
The different dumplings were good and its pretty easy to get your food. If you're looking for ambiance, you're probably not going to get it here. It looks like maybe back in the day it did but they have all these live seafood tanks in the back that are half filled with fish that look half dead.
A solid 3.5 for dim sum here at canton dim house (I wish Yelp allowed 1/2 star reviews!)
We took our virgin dim sum friends here for their first dim sum experience.
Food: The variety was pretty good. They had a lot of different dumplings, fried dishes, pan-fried dishes, and steamed dishes to choose from. My favorite dim sum dish is radish cake and theirs was pretty decent. They also had a variety of sweet dishes but we were so full that we didn't get to try it. Although everything was relatively good, it definitely didn't have unique or subtle flavors and of the 10 dishes we tried, a few of them needed some hot sauce to taste better. I recommend the dumplings and any of the steamed dishes overall though.
Decor: Not really a place you would take your in-laws or someone you want to impress. The decor is relatively bland/stale. The muted green walls on the outside don't exactly scream "come in" and the inside doesn't scream luxury seafood restaurant but for where it's located, it's definitely a hidden gem since it's a 10 minute walk from our house!
I don't know if our friends enjoyed their first dim sum experience. I think they would have liked a Yank Sing type of experience more. As for me, for the price, variety, and location, I will definitely be back.
5 stars might be a little enthusiastic, but this place is legit! The SOMA location is odd for dim sum and the decor is pretty hideous. But the food is great! They had all the traditional favorites and a few new things to try. I will definitely be going back.
Did the lunchtime dim sum thing.
The dumplings were quite good...the pork buns were OK. The service was prompt, and the folks pushing the carts were alot more courteous than most of the dim sum places I've been to.
The place in general was unremarkable.
We got there at 11:30. Good thing too: just as we were wrapping up our lunch, two large parties (12+ people each) showed up. The place got pretty crowded after that.
Actually came here for a buffet reception on Friday and the experience was a nightmare. The way they handled the whole reception was one of the worst I've seen. We probably would have had better service from a hot dog stand in Union Square. First off, I understand it was a "budget" wedding and it was buffet food, nothing fancy. But still, this was SOMEONE's WEDDING. They still paid for the food and service. But we were treated as if we were second class citizens the whole time.
Half an hour before the reception was supposed to start, the groom came up to me and asked me to talk to the manager, as her English was not very good and I speak Cantonese. The groom had called the day before to let them know their final headcount, which was two more tables (16 more total) more than what they had set up. The manager told me in Cantonese that no one called her and that there was in fact, 15 tables set up. I had to drag her around the dining room, counting the tables, one by one. Sure enough, we BOTH counted 13 tables. She told me, "well, to set up the extra tables is a lot of work." WTF? So she expected people to sit on the stairway? They finally had someone set up the additional 2 tables, but did not have the chair covers, white table cloth and sashes over the chairs. GHETTO.
The food was OK, but not great. Then again, not much one can do to screw up basic chow mein and fried rice, right?
They didn't have enough staff on duty (and this was a small banquet, considering there were only 105 guests total). Most Chinese banquets have at least 200. They were so understaffed that after the wedding cake was cut, the wedding party had to find guests to SERVE the wedding cake. I've never seen that before, ever.
And on top of that, they charged $9 per drink at the crappy bar.
All in all, I'd have to say this was one of the worst wedding banquets I've been to. I wouldn't have ANY event held here, even if the restaurant PAID me to do so.
I wouldn't exactly call myself a dim sum connoisseur, but I think I know quality dim sum from the not so much. I've visited Canton twice now. After the first visit, I would have given it a 1. The dim sum was was oily and the artful flavors of dim sum were just lacking. Normally, I would never have returned for a second visit, but our hotel was close and after a night of partying, my friends and I were hungry and would have settled for anything just to appease the after partying, empty stomach feeling. This time, Canton dim sum upgraded to average. There wasn't anything special to it. The chicken feet was okay, it definitely could have been braised for a few more hours so the meat is fall off the bone tender. The noodles were oily, the rice porridge had no flavor, but the har gau, siu mai and fried taro dumplings were fairly appetizing. The fried shrimp rolls were pretty good, definitely the highlight of the meal.
Went here for lunch with the family. The chicken porridge with the thousand year old egg was okay. They didn't have the Chinese donuts which is a minus for me. What Chinese restaurant doesn't serve Chinese donuts with their porridge? Then we had some hat cao and siu mai. Nothing special there. The chicken feet was good. I like it spicy but my bf could do without it..hehe. The rice flour with shrimp was good and big. It didn't fall apart like some places. You may want to order it with the waiter since they always run out off it.
The BBQ pork bun was good. Meat wasn't dry. The shrimp ball and crab ball was awesome. I think they charge you per crab ball though. The Shanghai dumpling was blah. I was really excited to try it because my friends were raving about how good it was there. First off, they wrapped it with way too much dough. Then when I bit into it, I was expecting a wave of delicious broth. There was hardly any broth in it. Disappointing. At first I thought maybe it was just that one dumpling but apparently, everyone at the table agreed. The only thing they didn't mess up on was the meat.
The service was okay there. When you speak to them in English they respond in Cantonese..haha. Shouldn't assume all Asians speak Cantonese. Minus for not refilling our waters. Also, another minus for allowing pets in the restaurant. Don't get me wrong I love dogs, I have a dog, but I would also love to eat at a place that is clean and doesn't have a dog being so close to all the food carts. And no, it wasn't a service dog. I also didn't like it when they were badgering us about when the rest of our party was going to arrive.
All in all, I would have to say that I've had better dim sum.
I don't think the prices are cheap but it's not that expensive either. The service was relatively decent and friendly- hell we ordered a million plates from the menu on top of the usual dim sum plates..
Thumbs up.
Extra star for their Fan-fuckin'-tastic chili sauce. The best damn Chinese hot sauce I've EVER had! I've had a lot of chili sauces from Chinese Restaurants, and this ladies and gentlemen, is the best! Super spicy, with a great fresh chili taste. Other chili sauces are more oil based and use dry chile flakes instead of fresh chiles, and others have a slightly sweet and sour taste, which I don't partically like. This sauce is something entirely different.
They must have a new recipe or a new chef making the chili sauce, because it never tasted this good.
Trust me and try it! You won't be disappointed.

Word Lesson:
Serendipity: A great restaurant find when someone leaves their wallet at home and the owner asks you to bring it to them.
That is how we ended up eating lunch at this place, and boy, was the dim sum a lot better than the ones I encountered in Chinatown. What a shock(!)
Finds:
1) It's near where we were staying. The convenience astounded me. I had no idea this gem was .... just... there!
2) The food! The variety of the dim sum that the happy ladies truck around is almost overwhelming. I even saw some I don't normally see, to the point that I don't even remember them anymore. That's how infrequent you see some of the kinds I saw. The quality was the best I've had in quite some time.
3) The people. This is a gem that both the tourists and the locals frequent. All you have to do is look at them and you can tell who's who.
My regret: I've been to San Francisco 5 times in a period of almost a decade. I only found this place. That saddened and disgusted me. At the same time, the discovery of this place makes me look forward to my next trip to SF.
I'm coming back to you, Canton, I promise. If you've never been here, check it out.
Ok I have to retract my earlier statement about the place. Given I was extremely busy with flowers and setting up, dealing with the photographer etc for my brother's reception, I was pretty oblivious to the actual service. I noted that they were understaffed. What I did not know and did not find out until a few minutes ago was bout the lip my friend got for noticing that the setup was missing 2 tables for guests. I will still state the food was pretty decent/good for the price paid for the party but service like that is unacceptable in my book. In the end everything worked out. Thank goodness I didn't realize that the manager was giving my friend lip.

I wandered in here after a flight from the east coast before heading in to the office. I'm a dim sum eater and needed a fix. This place exceeded my expectations. I was solo, so I didn't try much, but the Chinese broccoli was crisp and fresh, the har gow were the stars of the show, featuring some large shrimp instead of the smaller ones that I'm accustomed to. In fact, every dumpling that used shrimp had nice large ones. The only knock on the place it that it took forever to get my check totaled so I could pay and leave. I doubt this would have been the case if it had been busier. Like most Chinese restaurants, it's not going to change your life, but it's a solid option in a neighborhood that doesn't have a lot of dim sum around.
Quite good dim sum close to home. I ordered take out and it was still warm when I got home. This was a second visit and was just as good as the first. Definitely coming back.
Wedding reception was held here. Found street parking a block away (free after 3PM on the weekends), but there's the Moscone Center and SFMOMA garage close by as well.
Headed upstairs for the reception (downstairs had another wedding party) and the space was huge. There were about 250 people. The bride and groom sat with their parents up at the front and there was an open bar at the back...which was where my table was located.
Standard service as well as Chinese banquet food. Here are the dishes:
-Cold platter
-Honey walnut shrimp
-Sharks fin soup
-Peking Duck
-Veggie with mushrooms
-Steamed Fish
-Fried rice
-Scallops and green peas
-Lobster
The food was pretty good. Our table of 8 (2 no shows) was comprised of 6 girls and 2 guys and there was so much food left. Thankfully people took food home, otherwise it'd be a waste of some good Chinese food! It didn't dawn on me (until the end of the night) that nobody had water and that the waiters weren't going around filling glasses and then I spotted pitchers of water at the bar. I would have liked it if they had a pitcher at each table, but I guess the restaurant didn't want to waste time in having the waiters constantly refill pitchers.
Also, by 10PM the workers were already stripping down the tables and I don't mean just clearing the dishes. I mean taking the seat covers/linen off each chair. It was 10PM and people were just starting to hit the dance floor! Needless to say, guests started leaving at that time.
So overall, the food was decent but I found the service not the greatest, especially during a wedding when you'd want service to be the best.
although solid, this place was middle of the road.
nursing a wicked hangover led me to soak up the unease with some low down greasy dim sum.
it was 2pm and it was literally half empty. with some slow carts rolling along, we opted to order the bulk of the dishes from the dim sum order sheet. the dishes were split by pricing buckets from $2.75 to $6.50.
yum!
shrimp rice noodle roll
pork dumpling
chinese broccoli with oyster sauce
so-so
steamed bbq pork buns
meh, i've had better...
bee's nest taro puff - yank sing's version is deelish
stuffed fried bean curd - mayflower's version is to die for
sticky rice with dried scallop and meat wrapped in a lotus leaf - it was lacking true stickiness - it just feel apart. the tasty fatty sausage was too sparse. any bakery in the richmond would have a better one
doh!
we really wanted to order the pork rice porridge with duck egg but they were out.
lots of choices and variety - we'll have to come back and try out some more.
The very last time, I came here at Canton Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant which was for my Cousin's Red Egg And Ginger Party for lunch which was a couple months ago... This time I am back here again once more for my Cousin's Wedding Banquet Party and I had alot of fun not only did I have fun...
It was my very very first time for me at a Wedding Banquet dinner that they had Lion Dancing as a Pre Wedding Banquet Entertainment Show after when the MC introduced the family members of the Bride And Groom and also the Maid Of Honor and her Bridesmaid, Best Man and his Groomsmen and the least but not last were the Bride And Groom I wanna say congratulations to the both of them!!!!!
When the food arrived after when the MC introduced the Bride & Groom Family Members, Maid Of Honor & Her Bridemaids, Best Man & His Groomsmen, Lion Dancing...
This is what, I had for the 10 Course Wedding Banquet Dinner...
COLD MEAT PLATTER
FRESH SCALLOP WITH FILET MIGNON
KING PRAWNS WITH HONEY WALNUT
SHARK FIN SOUP WITH SHREDDED CHICKEN
STEAMED FRESH FISH
BLACK MUSHROOM WITH TENDER GREENS
CRISPY FRIED CHICKEN
PEKING DUCK WITH BUNS
SEAFOOD DELIGHT RICE
WEDDING CAKE
Out of the 10 Wedding Banquet courses this is what I like most which would be the KING PRAWNS WITH HONEY WALNUT, SHARK FIN SOUP WITH SHREDDED CHICKEN, PEKING DUCK WITH BUNS, SEAFOOD DELIGHT RICE... Canton Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant is not that of a place to have a Wedding Banquet Dinner... I certainly like the place alot!!!

I patronize this restaurant regularly because it's within walking distance from where I live. The food is fresh, the portions are decent and the prices are not too bad. And I can order dishes that are not on the menu -- substitute this for that and cook this without that, etc. The only bad thing is that it's cold in the winter because the restaurant is so large; but they bring portable heaters to warm up certain areas.
2.5 stars but I'll be nice :)
Strictly for their dimsum --
+ Location, location, location: extremely close to us. A very nice, leisurely stroll through SoMa and bam, you're there! Ample parking all around if you can find it.
+ Cheap
- Basic variety of dimsum: where's the beef tripe?
- Scary ass looking servers
- Outdated decor; straight from an Asian wedding in the 80's
We didn't eat much (too hungover and tired too) but it wasn't horrible or anything. Very generic place for dimsum with gawd-awful decor. I would stop here if I didn't want to walk farther to Chinatown :)
One hour later and I've still got a strange aftertaste in my mouth and a headache that shows no signs of abating. Anyone who gave Canton 3 stars or more must be genetically immune to the adverse side effects of MSG. Please share your DNA...
I cannot help but wonder how bad the food would taste without the flavor-enhancing, blood pressure boosting monosodium. If I die of a heart attack before this review is complete, you know what to blame...
Okay, maybe I have a slight negative bias against Canton because I've only ever come here on mandatory coworker outings. Probably not, though.
What you'll see on your plate after the "food" is gone is enough to make you swear off Chinese cuisine for a while. You might as well do yourself a favor and save time and money by pouring oil and MSG straight down your hatch.
Living in SF sucks if you don't have a car (like most people). Since I lived at the Archstone right next to Canton, I went there a few times.
I refuse to go to places like Panda Express/PF Chang's in fear of disrespecting my culture. Luckily, Canton is fairly authentic and I was pleased by the food choices. Their dim sum take-out/lunch take-out deli has some good deals during the day. When I was sick, I stopped in to buy some Pork & Egg porridge. When I was working late at night, I ordered Sauteed Eggplant and Pork.
There are definitely better places in SF for Chinese food. However, if you're in the area, Canton is not a bad choice.
Dim sum is ok- not on par with the best in the city (TK, Yank Sing or Koi Palace) but good enough if you are in that area. Dinner is below average, with everything either too bland or too salty, or just greasy.
Not often in the area, but if so, I'll be ok with the dim sum.
I have never been here for dim sum, but have been here numerous times for wedding receptions, and Red Egg and Ginger baby parties. The last time I was here, we hosted a Reg Egg and Ginger party for my youngest daughter when she arrived from China. This recent visit was for my cousin's Red Egg party for his new granddaughter.
Not too many places that can accommodate large parties like this. It's large, but not cavernous and dark, and perfect for mingling. This location is very close to freeway off and on ramps, and there's plentiful street parking on weekends (even better on Sundays when metered spaces are free). This is important for many out-of-town guests who are not familiar with San Francisco, or don't want to deal with Chinatown traffic and parking.
The usual is served: chow mein, fried rice, broccoli beef, Chinese broccoli, Mandarin spare ribs, fried chicken wings, har gow and siu mai, and of course, red-dyed hard boiled eggs and red ginger.. Hosts provided a whole roasted pig. The food itself is OK, but this party is not about the food: it's about introducing a new member of a family, and a great reason for the extended family and close friends to get together and catch up.
Blech. 12 dollar prices for 6 dollar meal. So much MSG that you can actually see it blanketing your food; your chicken is literally encrusted in it. Got some bad memories of this place.
On the other hand, I didn't throw up, if that counts as an "On the other hand"
Eh, mediocre dim sum.
Oh it's not horrible, and oh, I've never walked out unhappy from dim sum here, but I've definitely had better.
But the prices are reasonable, there is not usually a long wait, and parking isn't as bad as it would be in Chinatown.
The restaurant is kinda old though and could use a slight face lift.
I came here with my db team before volunteering @ the Food Bank and enjoyed myself. I loved the free parking they offered on the weekend because that neighborhood can get pretty tricky. The customer service was pretty good and they were helpful. We got there early so the kitchen was not quite fully open yet but we were able to order food direct from the kitchen and have them bring it out. It helped that I could order in Chinese but I grew up eating dim sum so I always know to order what I like : ) We ordered a ton of food but my team can definitely eat!! We left there pretty satisfied and did not take a huge hit to our pocketbooks.
Boyfriend and I walked from the Marriott where we spent the night to my free parking space at my workplace in SOMA. We were cold and soaking wet from the rain. I thought of Canton as the best place to warm up and fill our tummies with hot plates of steaming dim sum and jasmine tea.
Date: February 15, 2009 at 1PM
Occasion: After Valentine Brunch
Social Scene: Asian and Caucasian families
Service: Nice and friendly.
Treats:
Pork and preserved egg duck jook
Pork fried rice
Shrimp dumpling
Shrimp rice roll
Spinach and shrimp dumplings
Fishball dumpling
Our mistake was because we were so cold, wet and hungry, we ordered everything from the first dim sum cart that came our way. We were wishfully eyeing the other carts of crispy duck and roasted pork after we hurriedly ate our food but we were already too full.
I've been to Canton over 4 dozen times for weekday lunches because I used to work in SOMA. I've had much better experience during those lunch hours. Everything I've had was always delicious, fresh and hot.
I've always wanted to come here for Sunday brunch because I thought Sunday dim sum would have been better but it was DISAPPOINTING. The jook was very salty and dishes were not hot. The pork fried rice was lacking in flavor.
This is an okay place to go for weekday lunch but try somewhere else for great dim sum.
Lunch at this place: 31/2- 4 stars
Takeout place on Hawthorne Lane: 4 stars (weekdays only)
Sunday brunch: 2 1/2 -3 stars
Total: $39.34 including tax and tip.
The dim sum was pretty good. It wasn't amazing, it wasn't bad...it ws pretty good. But the service was just OK (what can u really expect at dim sum, especially when u don't look Chinese [even if u are] and don't speak the language?).
Reasonable prices don't hurt. But a somewhat odd location...kinda in no man's land doesn't help. All in all, a pleasant meal at a good price. Those are the most important parts of it all, right?
3.5 stars...not just 3.
I really like the fact that this place is large and spread out so you do not feel that you're literally rubbing elbows with your fellow diners. I used to eat here quite often when I worked in SOMA and have noticed a marked decline in quality over the last 5 years or so. That's not to say the food (particularly the dim sum) isn't good, I have just noticed more "off" days than in the past. A dish that I have found to be consistently good is the steamed tofu/shrimp roll.
Service can be spotty if you don't come during lunch hour. One particular experience that comes to mind is when the hostess sat my friend and I way out in the cuts and left us to our own devices for 20 minutes. We had to send a search party out for a waitress, which is not my idea of fun when I'm really hungry, and low on patience.
They serve dim sum... all day. Their dim sum isn't bad, and they actually serve it warm. So many other places have you eat it cold, which is all right... I guess.
The service is sometimes very questionable. I came here with my co-workers and they wanted vegetarian dumplings and the server gave them such a hard time like she didn't understand. So I ordered it in Chinese, and the bewildered (probably because she assumed we were all Filipino) waitress goes, "Oh, you want veh-jet-tear-e-en." As though she was teaching my co-workers on how to correctly pronounce the word even though they had repeated it numerously to her.
Their food quality is fine, but service does improve if you speak the language.
Hassle free no chaos dim sum experience.
The shrimp fried egg rolls were delicious!!!
So now I've eaten here a couple of times. And it's just alright.
A lot of the times the dim sum walking around is just plain cold. It would be nice to have some heat goin' on. I could imagine if their stuff was warm, it would be off the chain.
The people are really nice. They help you out if you're unfamiliar and if you want something that's not available, they bring it to you as soon as it is.
They're lucky they're the only ones around that serve what they serve cause I'd probably go somewhere else. Oh also, I think their sesame balls are better than Yank Sing's.

Came here for a wedding reception.
CONGRATS TIFF & JEFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Food was awesome. Good choice.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, the Wongderful Wong's, Christopher W, Gina and Yan, took their adventurous co-workers to Canton for dim sum.
Overall, the dim sum was average. Like most restaurants, Canton tried to push the overpriced Chinese broccoli, but I didn't fall for that. There was a good selection and my non-experienced dim sum eating co-workers had good exposure to new things. While others were too squeemish, my co-worker Sam didn't think twice and tried chicken feet. I have a new respect for him.
For being so close to our building in SOMA, it was definitely worth the time we saved from walking to Chinatown. However, if I had the option and time, I probably would venture into the heart of Chinatown for more scrumptious and cheaper dim sum.
Bottom line, if you are in the area, and need a quick dim sum fix, this is your place to go.
My first dim sum experience involving carts! I'm a cart virgin... I can't help it. As soon as my bf found out, he had to pop my dim sum cherry. I was a little timid when we got there because my chopstick skills can be soooo horrible. Self taught... tend to drop things... hold them closer to the middle... the list goes on... nakakahiya!
So I was very nervous to get my cherry popped, but the ladies here were actually very pleasant. They came around with their carts and explained what each thing was. They were not pushy, which made me feel less nervous because I didn't feel pressured to give in. It also helped to see other people with lackluster chopstick skills.
My favorites were the fried shrimp balls... oh my! Little crispy balls of shrimp... hard to chase down at first because I'm nervous, but perfect in every way! I don't even like shrimp usually, but I ate half of them. The steamed beef ball was decent; it looked better than it tasted, but I was nervous and didn't know what to order.
I kept looking around for congee... but was too shy to ask. I only saw it with preserved egg, which is not my first choice. Then my bf got the steamed rice noodle w/shrimp and with beef (since he knows it's rare that I wind up liking shrimp). I thought the beef was tasty; but I was too scared to ruin the shrimp ball experience, so I didn't try the noodle w/shrimp. His favorite dish was the sticky rice with scallop/meat.
Then it came time to end the meal and we spotted something delicious making it's way around. Tofu w/ ginger syrup. I think my coworker said it's called douhua. I've been wanting to try taho and he told me that this was very similar. OMG... I could eat the whole bowl by myself! I'm not a huge tofu fan, but this dish was the perfect ending to my first dim sum via cart experience!
