Sorry to hear this placed close; held a lot of good memories back in college when my husband and a lot of our friends were going to Davis, many of which I cannot remember, but hey that's not the point!
Although I'm sure my liver does not have fond memories of you (long islands, lemon drops, vodka redbulls, to name a few!) I certainly have great memories at this place and it was a common riual every Thursday- along with missing class on Fridays-I miss those carefree days!
I can't believe it CLOSED! I have to write a review for memory's sake.
Basically, Cantina's sucked. BUT it was pretty much only one of a few places to drink in Davis, and one of even fewer where you could "club" (your other options being Pasta, where they charged twice as much for shots, and The Grad). Hence the four stars.
Cantina's is the first place I learned how to drink... after much trial and error.
* Goodbye Cantina Thursdays (and the occasional Friday and Saturday)...
* Goodbye to the ghetto thugs from Sacramento who would come to Cantina's looking for fresh, tender Davis meat...
* Goodbye to the cranky bartenders...
* Goodbye to the stripper pole in the back...
Goodbye, Cantina's, goodbye~

Good riddance. Bahumbug (sp?). My buddies would constantly try to persuade me to come gallivant with them here, while I stomped my feet and demanded we stay at home and play beer pong. (Wags finger at Rex P). Future Aggies, you are truly blessed.

Wow! Cantina brings back lots of memories. 21st birthday Celebration! Super sweet shots! After being initiated there to the world of alcohol, it was the place to be at every Thursday night from 1996 to 2000! Don't know how it was before then but I do know that after 2000, it became super sleazy. The Cantina drink was a "Right Hook"---haven't found another drink like it. This spot was the best college hang out place. Yes, I admit the bartenders took forever and the lines were huge, all the way up to the hotel's parking lot at the end of the street. From 96 to 00' , it went from being free to going up to $4 and I think this past year the cover charge was $10!. Man I feel old. But "Lo bailado y lo vivido nadie te lo quita!"

I fucking hate the Cantina. The bartenders are completely useless as human beings. They do one (or all) of three things:
1) they pour shitty, foam-filled beer
2) they consistently mix drinks that taste like ass (how that's even possible, I'm not sure)
3) they tell you that you're too drunk, yet serve the stumbling, screechy slut down the bar.
The bouncers are just as horrible in their own way. If you're a girl and you make out with another girl, you get in for free. If you're not interested in that, you get to deal with their smartass, stupid remarks. I often wonder why I spent so many nights here....probably because Davis doesn't offer a whole world of opportunity.

Okay,
So because Cantina's reigns as THEEEEE premier (at at least one of THEEEE premier) dance spots in Davis, I just HAD to review it.
If you like the following, go to Cantina's:
1) Crowds
2) A**Hole Bartenders and Bouncers
3) Wristbands!?
4) A sprinkling of randomn people/guys from out of town aka small towns like winters/sac/stockton/etc etc who are there for the college girls!!!
Honestly though, who am I kidding - where ELSE in Davis can you go!? Cantina's is a place to go if you can get up a possee of 30 friends (and trust me, its pretty easy), hoard some tables, and look intimidating enough so fools won't take your seats and then you and your 30 friends can elbow people for a share of the dance floor :)
They do have tons of beers and the drink prices are okay, but it gets REALLY crowded towards the end of the night so you basically have to fight to get the attention of bartenders....most of the people that come here ARE college students and this IS davis, so its a good place to go if you go with a group of friends. This is also a meat market, so expect what you expect. Its really a big restaurant that converts to a club at night so all you college bootay's have somewhere to shake your thang in your jeans and sneaks - but I'd hardly call this upscale. Its like a baby club that hasn't graduated into adult clubdom yet... ^^
All in all, I remember good times here so I can't slam this place...THAT badly, but it gets old real soon...One star for the club itself and 1.5 for the memories here...= 2.5 baby.
If you're looking for upscale, quality SF/LA clubbing, you are in the wrong place, buddy. Remember: it's D-A-V-I-S, home of the toad tunnel.

Depending on what night you go, you'll either have a great time with your friends or bump into the sleazy guys standing by the front of the dance floor. Yes, just standing.
My friend ordered a tequila sunrise once that tasted like pure piss. It was so gross tasting, I figured how could you mix tequila and some orange juice incorrectly? Apparently the bartenders at Cantina can. The DJ does not know how to mix worth crap. The bouncers are pretty bitchy most evenings, telling you that you look too drunk and can't come in when you're perfectly fine. The bathrooms are usually covered in toilet paper and I've found the sink to be filled with vomit several times. Not a pleasant sight.
But, it's the only real place to go in Davis for a large dance floor, loud music, and a good mix of people.

The bouncers try to be a smartass. Then again most bouncers are paid to act that way. One time one of their bouncers kept persistantly asking me, "Do you really think you're 21? Are you sure you're 21?" I don't know the point of asking that question. Yes, I am 21 and why would I say, "No I'm not sure if I'm 21, lemme double check."
Drinks are good, but it gets pretty hard to get a drink when the bar gets crowded. Their drinks have supplied me with many wonderful drunk memories.
The dance floor is a different story. They really need to move the giant tv right above the dance floor. I've come close to whacking my head on that tv so many times. The DJ can play some really random songs and has long pauses between each song.
The same crowd shows up every week, which can be nice. You always know who you're going to run into.

yeah everyone wasnt too thrileld about cantinas while it was open, but looking back it gave me alot of memories. you expect to see everyone you know there on a thursday night, which was fun. where else can you see all your good friends in one spot, without the hassle of throwing a party. a place where memories are made, stories created and gossip begins. the bar was whack as hell...bartendars takin ages to make a drink, bouncers holding up the line so it builds up till the end of the block yet nobody was inside, the palce was hot as hell feeling like a suana. yeah we complained about how it wasnt great, but after being a year removed from college and can admit that i miss this place ... :(
A fun place to go. A few of the girls and I went up to visit a friend in Davis. She recommended this place and it was a really cool. We had good drinks. Davis is a college town and the students and people there are really nice and friendly. So my friends and I danced the night away to your basic top 40 and hip hop and dance music and had a really good time..cute guys tooo, ladies!

Left hook, right hook, and then an adios motherf*ck*r!
I didn't turn 21 till midway through my 4th year, but I still feel like I spent way too many Thursdays at the 'tina. The bouncers and bartenders I knew were cool, but the ones I didn't liked to put on a douchy exterior surrounding an a-hole center. Don't even get me started on the DJ - why oh why do they need to mix in AC/DC and other hair metal bands at the end of the night? The white chicks and frat guys go crazy for it...it reminds me of that Chappelle's Show skit where the people in the boardroom and restaurant wild out when John Mayer starts playing his electric guitar.
Here's my parting advice for the students of UCD: do not leave your jacket on a chair at this place, it will get taken. If it's cold out, just drink a lot of hot tea right before you leave, and hopefully it will keep you warm enough till you get in.

Too many brain cells lost here during my 3rd-5th years of college. If the dj still plays "I love rock'n roll" i'm gonna shit my pants! Oops, too late.

Bartenders: Great group of guys with good drinks.
Bouncers: One asshole, who I think they fired cause I haven't seen him after the night I cussed him out. The rest are pretty great.
DJ: The wannabe-hip and balding uncle playing the top 40s and of course the typical Michael Jackson songs they play at every other club/bar.
This place was good until all the Sac/Fairfield/Vacaville people started coming to harass the Davis folks. They kinda turned Cantina into this ghetto shit hole where a minimum of two fights occur a night and getting your ass gets grabbed at every corner. What a piece of crap this place turned out to be... so sad. But still... when you're a student at UCD and don't feel like driving 30+ minutes for some 21+ fun, where else ya gonna go?
By the way... they do serve food there in the day. I mean it is a restaurant :P I hear the food is great. If I ever try it I'll definately update this review
The only way you can have a good time here is if you know the bar staff on a personal basis; thankfully, my good friend was roommates with the bar manager.
Great food at good prices... and the amount of taps on the wall make me want to cry.
If you want a great time with great djs and great atmosphere, go to San Francisco...
I remembered when this place opened. It was was freaking packed. As the years have passed by it's changed quite a bit but it still has like 70 beers on tap. I remember when one of my friends from Chico came down, we drank like 3 pitchers of beer each, then moved to Margaritas. We then proceeded to play pool with a bunch of Australian guys and then realized we were drunk as fuck. Good times. That's the type of experience you can expect from this place if it's on. Otherwise it's dead as a doorknob - I don't really remember what the hot night is anymore. The weird thing is as a Cantina they're really isn't anymore Mexican food but they serve steak now. Funnier thing is the American bar joint next door now sells Mexican food. WTF?
This is the place where all the shady out of towners come to play with the college girls. They have as many beers on tap as any other bar that i have been to, but the creepy guys tend to make this place an avoid at almost any cost type of bar. (an extra star for $1 shots of tequila on cinco de mayo).
Great selection of beers. This place just reminds me of a frat party for people 21 and over.
