Homemade tiramisu. Need I say more?
OK, I will:) Great service, very reasonably priced Italian-American food (at least at lunch.) We were there at a weird time, so there were only three other tables occupied. Food came out quickly, our little garlic rolls were warm, I had plenty of refills on my tea.
Good thing we don't leave anywhere near this place, as I could easily see it replacing the usual Mexican take-out two or three times a week. But we will plan our visits to our niece around the corner to include lunch here!
Cantalini's is among my favorite Italian restaurants. Quaint and understated, this little gem holds a special place in my heart. We've eaten here alot. I'm not crazy about the cramped quarters if you get one of the middle tables, but otherwise, seating is comfortable. Service is always helpful, knowledgeable, and, contrary to some other reviews, prompt. I highly reccomend reservations if you plan to dine at peak times. They do have valet parking, but it seems like only on the weekends. All that being said, here's my reccomendations:
ANY of the homemade Ravioli (Spinach and Ricotta with meat sauce is my favorite)
Osso Bucco
Veal or Chicken Parmigana
Gnocchi
Vodka Penne
DESSERT:
Tiramisu
Cannoli
A great place that's reasonably priced. I highly reccomend!
This is a pretty cute Italian restaurant located walking distance from the beach. The food is a little oily and bland but edible enough. My biggest complaint is the wait. We didn't have to wait for a table even though it seems like many others did. From the outside, this place looks tiny, but there's a decent amount of tables inside, probably at least 20.
Waiting for our food was so painful. We were starving and in a bit of a rush. Overall, dinner took almost 3 hours. And it took over 30 minutes just to get the check and then get it back to sign.
Thankfully I used a http://restaurant.com certificate so dinner ended up costing us around $15 for two people and dessert. I won't be coming back here unless I feel like waiting around for 3 hours for my food and check.
Welcome to my hood. This local owned Italian restaurant is a quaint spot to have dinner after a day at the beach. Great food and wine selection at decent prices. You can get anything you want, including spumoni ice cream, which is quite good there. Pasta is al dente, so if you're not a fan be sure to mention you want it cooked well. Service can sometimes be a bit 'iffy' and I've noticed new waiters more often. Be patient and enjoy the outcome!
Ok second time, this time I ordered a traditional Italian dish but I can't remember the name, anyway, I thought the sauce had too much acid it did something to my mouth that wasn't pleasant. However, I might be slightly sensitive to acidic foods but definitely not as good as the Ravioli I had the first time. We also had the most drunk couples around us, might have had something to do with it.
To me, the mark of a great place is consistency, so we'll have to see. My boss loves this place. ps the sausage was good and my bosses Pinot was the worst....

I have been here 4 times since my first review and it has been excellent every time. Everyone I have gone with raves about it too. I had probably the best calzone I've ever had there, and I like to think of myself as a bit of a calzone expert ;) I definitely will continue to go here.

very good Italian food.
anitpasto is good, ravioli is real good, risoto is good, bruschetta is good, house wines are good. The important things that they have down are the sauces - texture and taste, as well as the ravioli - its hand made!!
Coming from Boston where I loved going to the North End for real Italian food Catalini's would be so-so, but for being here in LA and in playa, its the best.
I had no idea that this place was around the corner from my apartment. The decor on the outside is hot pink lights.. so I can see the hesitation. I tried to convince myself that Yelp users could not be wrong.
This is the first place where the pasta is cooked al dente. I am amazed. So many Italian retaurants in the States overcook their pasta.
The bread was not amazing.. it wasn't warm. The food was pretty good. We had melon wrapped with proscieutto.. something I can make myself. The cioppino was amazing... big mussels, scallops, etc. And my dinner mate had their pasta special. Very simple but delicious he said.
We did not have to wait because we went on a Monday night. I can't imagine it crazy busy.. but the service is a bit spotty. The owner/manager took our order and he was really nice. I plan to get the Osso Buco the next time I come.
Fans of C&O.. be warned that the atmosphere is not the same. There is no singing... there is no patio seating... no garlic knots. Just traditional Italian food. The food though.. is definitely more amazing.
We spend a lot of time driving on the PCH aka Coast Highway aka US1 etc, from San Diego to LA and points north. There seems to be an incredible array of great restaurants, maybe foodie row, from the incredible Austrian place in Pismo Beach to the German place in OB (San Diego) - can that qualify as the coast highway? So anyway, we have been driving through Playa Del Rey for many years and someone in the car always points to that Italian restaurant and says "gee, I wonder... it looks like a little hole in the wall... maybe we should go?" Drats! Shoulda gone sooner!
Finally, we made reservations for four of us on a Wednesday night.
So it is the usual small and tacky lottsa tacky pictures, but yes there are a surprising number of tables. Fortunately, we wound up with a table next to an open window which let in a refreshing breeze off the ocean; although I did wonder what the collection of wires was on the doorframe next to me.
No beer on tap, but some great bottled Italians. Wine list was a bit steep, but when is it not? I only had one beer before dinner, so these comments represent undulled taste buds.
Service: There are a number of comments in reviews about the service. It is difficult to say since we spent well over two hours... we were not in a hurry. However, I left a good tip because service was prompt after we were seated (the owner took our order), and bread, appetizers, main courses came at a good pace. I did notice a lag with dessert. But, on the other hand, once we were done with dessert, the check was delivered promptly (I hate waiting at this point I am so ready to go). Finally we did notice a number of groups moved in and out while we were eating. I think they were good enough to recognize we were not in a hurry. Four stars.
Main: Service didn't matter, the food was incredible! The owner (?) mentioned the specials of the night (including a canneloni dish as well as a nice shrimp and pasta combo) which we nabbed. Also tried the manicotti and the veal saltimbocca (a bit sweet, but yummy, and a great alfredo on the side). Four and a half stars here.
Dessert: We usually share but, hey twist our arms, this time we got four. We couldn't resist. Tried the canneloni, creme brulee, the truffles and of course the tiramisu. (We were going to go to the coffee house across the street for coffee and dessert, but it didn't quite happen.) Five stars for dessert.
Parking: street parking, not too bad, within a half block.
And a great time was had by all: we will be back.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this place. Recommending the gnocchi (sp?) and any of the raviolis. A place like this wouldnt have been around this long if it wasn't good.
This in an unpretentious pasta place. Upon arrival warm bread was served and our drinks arrived promptly; hearty Chianti ($6.50) per glass. After ordering spinach shrimp pasta special ($18.95) we got the house salad which was too oily for my taste. With the salad came more bread now as buns on the plate. It seemed as if the buns had been coated with butter/oil. The pasta was served in very generous portions. The shrimp was tasty. Garlic wedges were cooked with the pasta. The spinach may not have been seasoned. The dish came in one big bowl and my only complain is that the dish was a bit oily. Luckily the dish was not creamy. The restaurant also has less expensive pasta dishes and pizza. The restaurant seems popular and we arrived early for dinner so we got seated upon arrival but when we left people were waiting outside.
Here's a serving of old school spaghetti and meatballs with your Uncle Vito... Little Italy at the beach and all the unpretentious, retro decor I love about the Playa del Rey neighborhood.
Here's a great date suggestion: Hit the beach at sunset and then mosey over to Cantalini's for dinner.
Skip the pizza- the crust is too soggy. The Eggplant Parm is perfect and you can't go wrong with any of the pastas
Gratzie!
Decent not amazing Italian food in the Playa. I've been going to that restaurant location since I was a child - it used to an another Italian restaurant loaded to the rafters for random crap - wax covered Italian wine jugs, xmas ornaments, you name it. It was crazy.
Salerno's basically gives you the option of any kind of pasta, any way you want it prepared if you ask for it. Salads are ok. We're not talking about homemade pasta or organic ingredients here (yeah I'm a food snob) - it is about large servings, lots of sauce, and an ok wine selection.
I will be eating here no doubt for years to come since a certain family member is addicted to her favorite tomato cream pasta with peas and prosciutto!
Loves it! This has always been one of my favorite cozy romantic resturants and its been a long fantasy of mine to have a guy take me here for valentines day.
I finally met that dream guy and he took me here last year and low and behold everyone else in LA shared the same fantasy. It was PACKED! And to top it off we were seated right next to my older sister and her date. WTF.
I wont make that mistake again. I'll only go on Tuesdays in May. But I still love Cantalini's. Food is romantic, Staff is friendly and kind and treat you like family. The decor is perfect and I couldn't possibly love it anymore if I tried!
I love this place!
On a beach trip to Playa del Rey, my boyfriend and I decided to stop by this little place since our tummies were rumbling, and we thought we should give this place a try since some yummy Italian goodness would hit the spot! Cantalini's was perfect for our needs, and we ended up coming back a second and third time within the next couple months on our next beach trips. We never came for dinner, but lunch was very good! Street parking was not a problem for us on these lazy summer afternoons, the interior decor is nice, and I always appreciated the fresh flowers they have at each table.
As the place only had a few other customers each time when we went, we were seated quickly and the service was prompt. Since we just wanted something light to eat, we usually would order the Calamari appetizer and then some sort of pasta dish to split between the 2 of us. The lunch entrees come with a small salad and rolls so this was plenty of food for the 2 of us since we did not want to be too full or feel fat before going to the beach.
We're both big Calamari fans so the dish here made the cut according to our standards with its presentable warm golden appearance, yummy crispy taste, warm marinara dipping sauce on the side, and an equal amount of both ring pieces for him and squiggly leg pieces for me! The various pastas we ordered each time were classic Italian and typical. I don't remember exactly what we ordered, which means that it couldn't have been either amazing or horrible, haha ... but it was under $10 for a good-sized plate for sure.
Bottom line: The quality, quantity, and good service were there! Definitely a convenient place to hit up if you're in the area for good lunch!
Thanks, Yelp, for recommending a good place to bring a date :-) It's intimate, had good service, and good, clean food. The interior was simple and classy, and not generic or gaudy. I got the eggplant Parmesan, which was meaty with the right amount of sauce. Combined with a good glass of Syrah and it was a good meal. She enjoyed a chicken Parmesan and a glass of white wine. We stayed there for some time and the service came by just enough, but not too much. Thanks, Salerno.
BEST ITALIAN FOOD ON THE WESTSIDE! I've been coming here for years. Service has always been top notch, and food never disappoints. Prepare to wait during dinner time without a reservation. The servers know the food really well, and always have food and wine recommendations and pairings. Can't live without the pasta primavera... a wonderful veggie pasta in a light garlic oil sauce.
I went back here many times since and they are consistently good. :)

yummy!
Especially love the Sunday live music.
One of my FAVORITE places! I like the service here, the decor of this small little gem in Playa and most of all...the Tiramisu kicks butt! Probably the best on the Westside in my book.
Never had a bad meal here at all. Love to take friends and out town guest here. Always a good time. Pizza down to the pasta always makes me come back for more. Parking in the neighborhood is a bit of a drag, but you do end up finding a spot or using the valet.
Yummy food with friendly service!!!
One of my Top 5. Great quality, fresh, home-made ingredients for an excellent price. Nothing out of a can here. Lisa is the owner and Brian has been waiting here for years. I used to live down the street and order the seafood ravioli in the lobster cream sauce every week. I'm glad they took down that disgusting ceiling.
I went there on a Sunday night and got a booth. It was worth the wait because the jazz band was smooth and mellow. I encourage everyone to grab drink at the Harbor Room. It is a bar attached to the restaurant and the hostess will get you if you want to wait there. It is a great time catch a game or visit a miniature dive bar.
The place is a bit run down, but has that casual charm that pervades Playa Del Rey area. I find it endearing, others might call it dumpy kitsch.
The staff was very friendly and our waitress told us about an off the menu calamari appetizer that was excellent. I've been told to only order the specials, so I will return with that in mind.
Do not order the garlic bread. It was the worst I ever had. Seriously. It was hard as a rock and I'm pretty sure there wasn't any garlic on it.... in fact I'm not sure it was even bread.
A great local establishment in Playa Del Rey. The place serves standard Italian fare in an intimate but lively atmosphere. The restaurant is rather dim, but the walls are floridly frescoed and there sometimes is live entertainment.
If you eat here on the weekend, you would be well-served by calling ahead and making reservations. I recently walked in here on a Sunday night and the place was packed. We were told that we would be seated in 20-30 minutes, but we waited for over an hour! Needless to say, we were a bit cranky by the time we were seated. Notwithstanding the bad start, the hostess was apologetic, the service was attentive, the ambiance was intimate, and the band was lively--so our spirits were quickly uplifted. Overall, the experience was good. I'd definitely eat here again--but I'd make reservations next time.
I love this place. I have been going there consistenly since I found it and won't eat italian anywhere else. Love the veal marsala and the Veal Saltimbocca. Also they have this yummy fried cheese bread that comes with the house salad that is to die for. Sometimes they run out but when its available its so good. Also great value on some really good Chianti.
Also if you are waiting for a table the Harbor Room which has to be LA's smallest dive bar is next door, so you can grab a drink before.
This is about as good as it gets in Los Angeles for Italian food.
But before I get into the quality of the food, I will talk about the ambiance of the restaurant itself.
Nested on a cozy corner in Playa Del Rey, Cantalini's feels like a world away from the rest of the world. The restaurant itself isn't very big but it certainly feels warm and personal when you take a seat. It feels like being at home.
The food is amazing. Every dish I've tried here has been 5 star quality.
I highly recommend the lobster ravioli or chicken marsala. The pasta has always been cooked perfectly al dente and the cheese bread at the beginning of the meal is to die for. Wash everything down with a Gabiano Chianti and a creme brulee for dessert and you won't dare go anywhere else for italian food.
From the outside it looks a bit like a shanty, but once inside it's super cute! The live music (Sunday night) was fun, the lighting was romantic, and the food was phenomenal. I had the chicken and herb ravioli in tomato sauce and my husband had a calzone. Both were great, but I must say the calzone was absolutely delicious. We had soup as well...pass on the fagiola, but the lentil was good. Dessert- Creme Brulee was fabulous and even though I typically dislike canolies, I enjoyed this one. I was so fat and happy during dinner, I even considered having children.
Your usual Italian food... pasta and sauce and whatnots. But what brings me out to this place is their baked mozzarella marinara. It's your giant size mozzarella stick... warm and gooey cheese with butt load of sauce (hmmmmmm~ cheese).
The few times I have been there I did wait 10-20 minutes so making a reservation might be a good idea but it's not a shi-shi place at all. Probably a good place to have a casual date and a nice walk on the beach afterward.
Somewhat of a long drive through the boonies but for my melted cheese I would do almost anything.
Wheeeeeeenn theeeeeeeeeee
Moon hitz yor eye Like-a big-a pizza-pye...
Thatz-AMOR-ay....(Thatz amor-ay)!
It's LOVE, boys and girls, and here are the top ten reasons I go!
10. I can walk down the hill to the place!
9. I can call a cab to take my drunk ass back up the hill after!
8. Ask about the history of the murals, particularly from the hostess
7. Great Pinot Noir and even Pinot Noir Rose (yes, i said Rose' )
6. Skip the garden salad- Ceasar, baby, Ceasar!
5. Fresh baked mushroom and tomato Foccacia!!!!
4. The yummy Olive oil/ balsamic/ cheese concoction to dip the bread
3. Veal Masala with mushrooms....mmmmmm
2. Linguini with HUGE shrimp, mussels and calamari- Bellisima!
Drum Roll.....drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
And the number one reason I freakin love this place:
1. Leftovers!
just go already before I have ta slap you around with fresh foccacia...
Savory sausages and tasty spaghetti was what I was craving and Cantalini's served up exactly what I wanted in a generous bowl. The spaghetti was the perfect texture. Followed the meal up with a double espresson that filled a whole coffee cup and some delish white pistachio gelato which I shared with my daughter.
For my daughter, btw, no kid's menu but they served up a custom order of a mini-cheese pizza which was exactly what she wanted.
Also, gotta love a place where the owner is there mixing and mingling and making sure that everyone's comfortable.
One of my favorite Italian restaurants, ever, period, end of story. Most of the time, I try something different or get one of their specials. There's always a risk that getting something that I haven't had before may not be as good.
However, I have yet to be disappointed. I've tried their calamari, veal saltimbocca, ossobuco, chicken cacciatore, and several other things, all of which was excellent. For wine, they've got a pretty good house chianti, which I would recommend.
It gets crowded here, so remember to either make reservations or get their early. Oh yeah, another reason to get their early is the bread. They have several different types of bread that they bring out. However, there's this one type that's got stuff in and just tastes really good that they always run out of if you get there late. So, get there early for the bread.
Great relaxing Italian spot, right off the beach. Great service and solid food. Salmon is always stellar and ravioli kicks. Free valet, too. Music on Sunday nights is fun, as well.
i love discovering a new Italian place- walking to the marina, you feel like you are 100 miles away from LA...first, the food is good! seriously, not just CPK, Cheesecake Factory, "I'll have your fettuccine Alfredo please" good, but authentic "this taste like Italian food" good. The decor it very nice, the staff is attentive, lots of wine to chose from. We went for my sister's birthday and they gave us free salads for everyone and free tiramisu- I will be back for sure!
I must have passed this place dozens of times in my three years living in Playa and for some reason I've never gone in. Maybe it was because Bobbie had warned me about it. Maybe it's because I can make pasta at home for way cheaper -- and, in LA, usually better -- than what restaurants charge. But I had a craving for ravioli last night, and so I convinced Bobbie to give Salerno Beach another go.
Apparently, even though she'd agreed, she was still hesitant because she gave several customers an exit poll before we'd even crossed the threshold. Satisfied, we entered, and the remainder of her fears flitted away when she noticed that the ceiling had been cleared of its previous tenants of dust and clutter. "I cover my box spring," she explained. "I'm not going to eat somewhere that dust bunnies can fall onto my foccacia." With the dust bunny colony eradicated, the restaurant is now a Bobbie-friendly zone with a shiny, healthy wood ceiling.
Our waiter, also the manager, was quite helpful and accommodating. When I couldn't decide between the spinach or mushroom raviolis, he had a plate made up with a little of both. How kewl is that? While I enjoyed my specially prepared plate (note to self: spinach raviolis were far superior than the mushroom), Bobbie's eggplant parmigiana was phenomenal. I almost didn't leave her enough for leftovers. Eggplant parmigiana, as we all know, can go horribly wrong, but at Salerno Beach it was wonderfully right. I foresee myself having cravings in the very near future.
Creme brulee was fine. Wine list was mediocre. Atmosphere was pleasantly kitschy, with requisite paintings/frescoes. Too bad Salerno's isn't zoned for a patio -- the sea breezes alone would merit two stars. I'm giving Salerno's three stars (there's an invisible half star) for its lack of red wine options by the glass, the less-than-stellar porcini cream sauce (not terrible, just not that flavorful), and blah bread, which was room temperature and nothing to write home about. Note to Italian restaurants: Your bread should make me want to write home.
Pink sauce! Pink sauce! Hooray for pink sauce!
Went there once on a cold quiet Wednesday night, so there was no wait. It's a small place, so make reservations if you're impatient. It's so cute and romantic there and feels like such a great little family-owned restaurant (I don't know if it is or not but it sure feels that way). I mean, the tiramisu is in this big rectangular pyrex baking dish with saran wrap over it, like Nana just made it and put it in the fridge display case next to the empty cannoli shells. It all looks so homey and authentic, like you're sitting in someone's kitchen.
Pink sauce rivals Mama D's only instead of just serving it over plain pasta, they pour it all over delicious tortellini. Penne with meatballs in marinara was also excellent. Pesto was decent and tasted homemade, but I'd rather opt for pink sauce.
Did I mention how cute this place is? It's romantic, with candlelight and wines and all, but it's also cozy and laid back. It's just what a perfect date should be (hint hint).
I went back again and we really enjoyed it ! I had the Cioppino and a friend had the Chicken Marcela . Excellent quality especially for the fair prices . The owner came to our table and was very nice and accommodating . Parking can be a little rough but we always manage to find a place. We will defiantly be back again !

Very pleased that I finally tried this place. Good authentic Italian Food.
Nice atmosphere and it… Read more »
I don't understand what other people see in this place. They have no seating area except at the dive bar next door or in the cold. The soup was watered down and needed extra seasoning. The bread was cold. The service was extremely slow. The food was mediorce, very plain. I would not recommend this place to anyone. If you want the best Italian food in the south bay go to Mama D's .
if you want food quality, you can find higher quality italien food in the freezer case of your local grocery store.
bland, flavorless, glop.
the best thing they serve is the spumoni for dessert.
if you're forced to go here, and you are at all discerning about what you eat, just order several portions of spumoni until you can get some real food.
No one would regret going to this restaurant. The food is good and worth the price with entrees ranging around 12-18. The seafood dishes are v. fresh and garlic pasta with basil is a one-bowl wonder.
The house manager is also excellent. Bright, attentive and always consistent for the past two years, despite a revolving door of front managers. Observing/interacting with him will leave you with a deeper appreciation on the subject of service.
The restaurant is a mite cramped but the decor is warm and inviting. I noticed you can also byob but I don't know if they charge corkage. Their wine list is half-decent. Perfect, if in need of a family-nite or hosting out of towners.
I took the girlfriend here for Valentine's Day - well, a day early to avoid the rush, and I couldn't have done better. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic and the food was really good. Everything tasted very fresh, not oily, it's almost made me a fan of italian food again (you know, try to avoid all those pasta carbs). I had the Penne Arrabbiata and loved it. Wow, it's the best I've had. Of course, as aforementioned, I am not a pasta connoisseur so take that for what it's worth. I am however a critic of chocolate cakes. Having grown up in Hershey, PA; truely a chocolate town, where they had the best bakery when I was a kid (they closed it sadly)and I enjoy chocolate a lot . Well, I think the triple layer chocolate fudge cake is about the best I've ever had. It's so fresh and rich, but not too rich - really it's very good. My girlfriend goes back just to order the cake for take out ha ha. I highly recommend it.
Yeah, so they're busy! That's because they are great. This place is indeed a family-run joint, owned by a great Italian lady named Lisa who's been wanting to open a restaurant her whole life.
Almost everything is really good here, but let me make some recommendations:
- Anything with any kind of pink sauce. Penne vodka, seafood ravioli with lobster cream sauce, and more.
- Gnocchi -- I *know* they're "just gnocchi" but her Gnocchi Salerno is absolutely incredible.
- Pizza -- it's on a separate menu, and it hardly seems worth the wait to "just' order a pizza, but the pizza is really good.
- Scampi Salerno -- my wife gets this at least 50% of the time.
- Most nights the caesar salad is awesome, but I've had it a couple of times where it was a tad dry.
And just about anything else...
By far the best Italian food I've had in LA. This is as close as it gets to NY style Italian, right down to the atmosphere of the place. I can't believe I've passed by this place so many times but have never eaten here until recently. Nestled in the quaint beach town of Playa del Rey this is a great spot to take a date. The mood of the place is lit by candle light and decorated with various headshots from Ernest Borgnine to Erik Estrada. Its a few blocks from the beach so after dinner you can take a nice little stroll on the boardwalk to walk off the food. I recommend making reservations because it gets packed, even on a Sunday night.
We ordered the Antipasto Salad which was soooo good. This is the first place I've been to that knows how to make an Antipasto Salad. Every other spot thinks its a salad with some cold cuts thrown on top.... wrong! Its a nice spread of Italian cold cuts consisting of Mortodella, Gabagool, Salami, Provolone, Olives, Peppers and Artichokes. Mix a little olive oil, vinegar and fresh pepper and you're good to go. For the main course we shared an order of Baked Ziti. Penne shells mixed with Ricotta cheese and marinara sauce, with Mozzarella baked on top. The ragu here is excellent, and the cheese tasted quite fresh. For dessert we shared a Cannoli which just melted in your mouth.
I will be coming back here most definitely. There are so many things on the menu I want to try. I hear their Veal is top notch here, maybe even the best in the city. So for the next time a friend suggests Italian food and wants to take you to C&O steer them away from that crap and suggest this place, the real deal!
