This is still my favorite shop in LB.  They've got every kind of packaged candy imaginable, and the people working here are so into helping you find what you want.  They've got all of the candies that were my favorites when I was a kid.  Plus, they've got lots of fun candy novelty items.

The only notable negative is the Baron's high prices (that's where they lost the fifth star), so you don't come here for value.  You come here for the experience and the selection of candies that you won't be able to find anywhere else.

Hey old people, remember all those amazingly sugary sweets from your childhood? Well the Candy Baron carries them!

This is not your average candy store. Not only is it right off the beach, but they have the best candy selection I've ever seen. Boston Baked Beans, Sugar Daddies, candy lipstick, Red Hots, rock candy, Turkish Taffy, Bottle Caps, Chick-O-Stick, Coconut Long Boys, Necco, candy cigarettes (loved these as a kid, but don't smoke!) and so many more, I just can't name them all. There also have a ridiculous variety of salt water taffy.

Even with all the nostalgic sweets, the young ones can still get their chocolates, jawbreakers, gummy worms and sour belts here. I just can't give them another star because this store is very expensive. By the time I walked up to the counter with my pathetic 1/4 bag of candy, my grand total was about $18. For the amount I picked up, I probably would have paid about $6-$7 at another store, but I guess that you pay for the variety, right? A man with his daughters ahead of me in line paid a whopping $140 for 3 bags of candy. Madness.

Being the incredible big sister that I am, I brought home the bag for my younger siblings. They loved the different kinds of gummy and sour candy, but for the price, that bag should have lasted way longer.

The novelty of this candy store is great- takes you back to the olden days.  Sadly once the novelty wore off and reality set in, this place is not as sweet as the candy it sells. The floors are dirty and employees are a rude. At 10.58 per pound I had expected a little more. Needless to say next time I wont be back.

While we were leafing through the candies, one of the employees came up to us and told us you have to buy the candies first before you eat it.

    Are you serious? How rude!

This place has completely lost my respect. I'm not all that into candy anyway.

A cool spot that sparks up nostalgia. They carry all the old school candies like Boston Baked Beans and candy cigarettes. Was a bit disappointed they didn't have Super Lemons or Super Colas (why doesn't anyone remember those).

So many types of candy in one room!  It's definitely fun to walk around and enjoy the nostalgia.  If you've got a sweet-tooth like me, then you'll love the vast varieties of candy found here. You can buy by the pound, package, or container.  It's up to you.  If you want to pay with a credit card, there's a $3 minimum purchase, which is awesome.  They even carry international candies like Violet Crumble, Flake Bars, real Cadbury chocolate and hazelnut Kit-Kats.

I love Candy Baron. SOOOO MUCH candy!!  Pricey too. Always get "Chuckles" and cinnabears. Love their gummy sharks too. They have barrels and barrels of different flavored taffy. Saw a giant gummibear..but I think it was $8 lol. Lots of old school candy here... wish it was closer to my house.

Great selection of candies from childhood, but beware you're going to pay a steep price.  Personally, I'd just go here for candy that you can't find in your regular grocery store because a movie sized box of junior mints is going to cost you $5.  So stick to specialty candies that are difficult to find and you'll be happy.

I'm all for nostalgic specialty candy shops and I was so excited to find Violet Crumble bars!  However, it was a letdown to take the first bite and discover it was unmistakably stale.  Then I read the wrapper and the "best by" date was months past.  Hmm... Candy Baron, I don't complain about paying over $4 per imported candy bar, perhaps you could insure the merchandise is fresh in exchange?  Other than that, the shop is adorable and squeezing past barrels of salt water taffy and chattering teens/tourists adds to the old tyme feel.

I love this candy store and my husband and I always stop in here whenever we are in Laguna. We always walk there, as parking anywhere in Laguna is just ridiculous, both finding and paying for it. Yes, the candy prices are a bit expensive, but rent is probably insane, and they do carry some obscure things, and for me, I am fine with the price point. I usually have to rein in my husband, who could easily blow $50 on saltwater taffy. We usually get a couple of flavors of sour belts, malt balls, little jawbreakers, taffies, and caramels. They also sell these obscure French mints that my husband loves-they are hard mints with a hint of anise, and a flower seed in the center (violet, rose, etc).
Once you are inside, you will see so much candy it is a little insane. To the left front are the sugar free goodies, the rest of the front is dedicated to saltwater taffies of all kinds of flavors. In the center are the more kitschy candies (Nintendo themed, retro tins, etc), malt balls, jawbreakers, and American candies (Hersey's Kisses, Reese's, etc). In the back are the over the top Pez despensers, nostalgic candies, Altoids, and import candies. At the register itself (in the center of the store) are the insect candies, which gross me out and should be across from the register so I don't have to look at it as I check out. My biggest thing is that the aisles are a bit narrow, which makes me nervous (I can be clumsy) and I dread being that person that accidentally knocks my basket into something that dumps candy all over the floor. Change those two things and I'd say it's 5 star!

Candy makes the world go 'round.

I'll admit that I'm not particularly mature and I never walk pass a candy store without stopping by. This one wasn't particularly gimmicky, lacking shiny crinkly bags and chutes of brightly-colored candy. However, they did have barrels and plenty of nostalgic and funky candy to choose from, including horehound (remember Little House on the Prairie?), violet mint (bleh) and tons of saltwater taffy (though not made on site).

I'm happy that this place seems more sanitary than the Sweet Factory because everything without a wrapper is packaged into tiny baggies so you don't fish it out yourself with tongs. That means my gummy bears haven't been sneezed on, touched or sampled. Phew! They also list ingredients for much of their candy so you can avoid allergens.

Don't forget to grab your wooden pail so your chocolates don't melt in your hand.

I'm not sure if it was pricey or not compared to other self-serve candy stores. I got a fair amount of heavy taffy and sour tape for $5 so I'm guessing it's on par or even cheaper than Sweet Factory. Some of the larger items, like the gi-normous Jaw Breakers, are priced individually rather than by weight. Their rock candy is without the stick, so in theory, you eat everything you paid for.

P.S. I tried the Brazillian Chocolate Lime hard candy. Interesting combination. The chocolate-covered cinnamon bears are a no.

I read the reviews on Yelp and I checked out this place. There's a good amount of candy in this shop. I agree with Florance's review in that the individually wrapped bags of candy are a good thing. I liked the collectible tins of mints they carried, everything from colorful Obama tins to tins from Jim Benton's bunny line.

What I liked out of what I bought that I've tried: Sour Patch Kids Cherry flavored gummies and strawberry-banana striped sour gummy tape. The licorice chews were all right. Now, the licorice swirls were really good.

If you like candy, it's worth a look.

    Fantastic!

Candy Baron is a chain, I believe, but I love this place anyway!  As everyone mentions, it is very old fashioned, all the candy is actually on barrels, and you get a basket to fill with what you like.

This place has a great variety of salt water taffy, the old school candy: Mary Jane, Peanut butter bars, Chik-O-Stiks, Abba-Zabba(you-my-only-friend), Tootsie roll pops, Candy Cigarettes, Crybabies, Lemon Heads, Cherry Clan, Boston Baked Beans....

Candy Baron also has sugar free candies (e.g. Godiva, some taffies, hard candies), and imported  from various parts of the world (Lion Bars, Bounty Bars, Baci*).

    Gripe:  Slightly expensive :P
Like: Everything else! :D  Also like that they portion the gummy candies so that you dont overdo it.

Come to Candy Baron to reminisce about a time we (or at least I wasn't) weren't alive!

    *mi molto piace i Baci!

The owner here is both hilarious and scary - sort of a weird combo of Soup Nazi and candy man.

I have to give it up to this place for keeping the Cadbury Crunchy bar in stock. I first had one in London when I was in 4th grade, and guzzle down a bunch whenever I can find them.

I just wish they had AC running...even in mid-April this place felt like a sauna. I don't want people sweating all over the gummy worms.

Love this nostalgic candy shop! It's the stuff my childhood dreams were made of!  We always stop in when we are at the beach because this is one of the few places in OC you can get candy from the UK! I found the owner to be super friendly and sweet (hehehe)... Can't wait until my baby can fully appreciate a candy store!

Willy Wonka heaven. This place has been here forever and they have the best selection of imported and domestic candies ever!
Most of the candy is in old woodern bins and you can pick out the stuff you like and it gets weighed at the end. Be careful-it is a little pricey and your eyes are always bigger than your budget.
Great selection of salt water taffy and candies from around the world.
Candy cigarettes and Violet Crumble (what ever happened to Olivia Newton John's clothing store she had in Crystal Court?-that was the only place you could find this candy).

Parking is horrible if you can't find a spot in the meters out front.
We always get dropped off and run in to do our shopping.

This is a candy store for the upper class, as if you already didn't know given its touristy location...Just off the boardwalk on pacific coast highway in laguna beach this candy store seems small from the outside but digs deep into the structure its placed. I give this candy store a 4 star rating due to its vast selection of candies. More than likely when you visit you will find candy you can't find most anywhere else and candy you forgot even existed! I also say for people of upper class because this candy store can be very pricey; they do a lot of their pricing based on weight. Just depends on the packaging. Candy Baron is very original and unlike most candy stores that are say in a mall, this candy store makes me feel 'like a kid in a candy store'! Anything from coke bottles which are a soft candy to a whole isle of pez dispensers! I also like the rock candy, They have rock candy of multiple flavors on sticks, but i like the rock candy that comes in their prepackaged bags. Just be careful taking it home because if you get pulled over the police will probably think its crystal meth! Really good stuff though! (The rock candy, not crystal meth :-P) Thnx soooo much Candy Baron! There's no way you're going out of business!

    Two Words...........Pecan Roll

So our Laguna Beach day trip was quickly coming to a close. We were tired, a little sun burnt, and most of all full. We had already had cup cakes from Laguna Beach House, Dinner from Nick's, and gelato from Tutto Amore Gelato. We were trying to walk off all the food we had just consumed when we came across Candy Baron.

Once we walked in we were surrounded by barrels and barrels of candy.
Taffy, bubble gum, gummy bears, jelly belly's, candy bars, chocolate covered pretzels, and imported chocolates are just to name a few of the items that cover every square inch of this shop. Just looking at all that candy was giving me a stomach ache. As I looked over the prices I noticed that this place was a little expensive but most candy shops are a bit pricey. When we were about to leave I glanced to the left of the cash register and I caught a glimpse of something that kind of looked like a piece of dog feces. At first I looked at my GF and said "look at the nasty looking thing" but upon closer inspection I saw the words Pecan Roll written in green letters across the plastic package. I'm a sucker for anything that is made with pecans. Even though I was stuffed and that I new I had probably gained 10 pounds from all the food I had already eaten that day I could not leave this shop with out one of these two dollar pecan rolls. My intentions were to take it home and eat it the next day but on our drive home there was an accident on the 5 freeway (it figures) and we were stuck sitting in traffic. As we were sitting there I remembered the pecan roll and decided that I might as well eat it now. Oh my goodness, I loved that dog feces looking candy. The roll was made up of a piece of soft white chocolate fudge that was rolled in crushed pecans. The fudge tasted so fresh, like if it was home made. I don't think any other candy bar will ever be as good as this one was. Next time I'm in Laguna I'm going to buy at least five of these nasty looking, amazing tasting rolls.

I found candy that I have not seen since childhood or since being in Europe, Cadbury makes wonderful candies that we just don't get in the states often.  Bring your kids, and their college fund!  I have never left without spending less than $20. I still have yet to get my first cavity if that helps explain how little you get for the money.

WTF, Candy Baron? You really stopped carrying the only thing that kept me coming back? I want my Violet Crumble, bitches! That delicous Australian treat of chocolate-covered honeycomb gave me a reason to drop Washingtons in your store like they were burning up my pockets, but you stopped. Even worse, you suggest that some cheap UK imitation would satisfy my craving. Pathetic. Still, you've got an assload of candy, almost all of which is tasty. So I'll give you a pass. But you need to work on getting back my shit.

This is a great place to go, they have all the old skool candy I miss from when I was a kid. Most notably, Flicks. Shocking, they are kinda like Hersheys kisses, but bigger and come in a cardboard tube. I bought some, and unless the formula's changed, blech. I guess I didn't know any better. Chick a stick, Spree, pop rocks, all the stuff you could want plus new stuff. Taffy, swedish fish. The selection here is amazing. Top Notch.

Good old fashion candy store. I love all the salt water taffy flavors and once you stop and wonder 'hum, I wonder how this tastes?' you will be left to trying all the flavors. No matter how old you are, you will feel young again filling up your bucket with all the candy your heart desires. After purchase, walk to the beach, lay down a beach towel and enjoy your candy laying down in the sun or at night hearing the waves crashing in the background.

Such a great find in the most unexpected place.  Amidst the art shops and posh restaurants is the Candy Baron.  It's fairly large for a candy shop and has a huge selection of candy, chocolates, gum, etc. - the barrels of taffy greet you at the front, and the more nostalgic items are at the back.  It's a little expensive, but hey, the rent in this area has to be astronomical. I especially like the candy cigars and the excellent selection of pop rocks.  But sad to say, they didn't have chocolate pop rocks!  That would have made this place 5 stars.  But someone who's not into pop rocks would probably give this place a 5.  Oh, and another reason why I didn't give the extra star was that the person at the register was not helpful or friendly (it's a freaking candy store - scarf some sugar and smile!). Parking of course, as in any place in LB, is ridiculous (as in bad), so if you're going to LB just to go to this place, probably not a good idea  BUT if you're in the area anyway, good idea to check it out.
