The city has completely re-done the basketball court and the soccer field at Candler Park. Even with the drought, the field is in pretty good shape. If you're around on a weekend morning during the Latin league games you can buy some excellent (and thoroughly unlicensed) food from the venders that take advantage of the crowd.
Bobby Jones played on the golf course back in the day. That's pretty cool.
The kickball league is charming in its profound goofiness.
Sadly, the pool features too many unattended children for my taste.

Candler Park is one of Atlanta's best kept secrets. A very quaint golf course, community swimming pool and lots of walking room make this the perfect weekend (or weeknight) destination.
Candler Park is safe and kid and pet friendly. It is located near some great restaurants and retail stores (Check out Donna Van Gogh's Artist Market right down the street for great locally made folk art--the ladies who own it are top notch).

This park has a little bit of everything: tennis, swimming, a big athletic field, basketball, and a 9 hole golf course. There's also a nice playground for the kids, and plenty of room to walk your dog or jog. In the Fall it hosts a small arts and crafts festival. I find the athletic field is a good spot to throw a frisbee with some friends, there's enough room for a full blown soccer game and if the field is empty you'll have loads of room to play.

Candler Park is the reason I bought my house- I wanted to be near this lovely, quiet park. I cannot stand Piedmont Park because it is always so busy and it's a drag trying to find a street to park on. And I also do not trust their dog park.
So, Candler is the answer to all my park prayers. It has a field for soccer or football, a basketball court , a golf course, a nice walking trail, a playground for the kiddies, a place to have a picnic, a field to just relax in, and a large swimming pool.
The walking trail and golf course have lovely little bridges that lead you over the creek, and they have park benches all around so that you can sit and just enjoy the beauty. In the fall the leaves are breathtaking as there are a lot of huge, old trees all over the park.
They also have a lot of festivals- but you should especially check out Fall Fest- it usually happens in the teens of October!
I walk my dogs there daily and they enjoy it as much as I do! And I can let them off their leashes to cavort freely as there is usually no other threatening dogs to attack my 5 lb. babies!
