Great for a gals night out or a date. Decent wine selection & yummy deserts.
They have a ton of couches inside and a beautiful patio w/ many tables outside.
Really though, I love their Sunday Brunch. They have a delicious and fairly healthy menu and many choices to wash it down with - a fairly extensive tea selection, coffee and bottomless mimosas! I recommend the eggs benedict w/ salmon - yum!
Parking along the street - get their early! -

The atmosphere is great, but if you actually like espresso, steer as clear from here as possible. The night I was here, there was a new "barista" at work. She was told to put one shot in an 8oz glass and fill the rest with water. Nuances aside, one shot of weak espresso in lots of water makes a nice tea looking drink that's "technically" an Americano.
The place is well liked, and in fact was packed. But it wasn't for the espresso. Having spent the last 6 years in the Boulder, CO area, I may just be spoiled.
The staff was friendly once contact was made at the register. :) -

Summary:
Pros/Cons
Decor: Very comfortable kinda like if your fabulously gay uncle decorated the place which isn't bad if you like your uncle. / bad if you don't like him or French shabby chic.
Service: Fantastic the staff are very attentive and sociable/ bad if you don't know the routine on how to get your coffee as its around the bend and I stood around looking stupid (which isn't hard).
Coffee: If you like your coffee choices flavored with hazelnuts, vanilla and the like this is the place for you./bad if you're like me and like coffee to taste like well...coffee.
Don't get me wrong I like this place but I think the "foofiness" overpowers a bit. -
Review from Jake W.
I hate having to give this place only 2 stars, given its cool vibe, base of loyal fans and stellar reviews, but I just can't seem to figure out why Candlelight is so beloved.
For starters, the ordering system is strange. There is this huge bar right when you walk in -- yes, an actual bar that you would see at a drinking establishment. Apparently, I was standing on the wrong line at the bar to order -- but no one told me until 10 minutes had passed.
The menu was not memorable, and I didn't think the prices were as cheap as some of the reviews here have indicated.
I can see meeting people here for a quick drink or coffee, but I would move on to another establishment for something more substantial. -

I've only been here once but I love the place! The setting is very laid-back, not to mention the outdoor patio is gorgeous with it's many plants and lights. I've only had cake here, and the chocolate cake was amazingggg. It wasn't the ordinary cheap store-bought cake. It was a a;lskjdflkds speechless good slice of cake.

Review for 7/14/2011
I was drawn in by my love of loose leaf tea, and put off by the food poisoning i got off a caprese sandwhich (spell check).
I kinda loved the atmosphere and as long as youre not shy about close quarters with strangers it can be comfy and homey though it is very dim for my preference and when it gets crowded you feel a bit....invaded in regards to your personal space.
The 1 star is for the food poisoning i got off a simple veggie dish. I dont like to point fingers but this was the only thing id eaten all day minus some frosted flakes for breakfast 12 hours prior. A friend and i decided it was interesting and parked on the street to go inside. Later that night she was nursing me through stomach pains and vomiting.
Ill come for the tea and possibly dessert (though never when its busy) but i doubt ill ever venture into their food menu again.
The major bummer is that it was this past July, right before my birthday. I have to say that influenced a very negative air for candlelight in my eyes as i tend to have bad birthday experiences due to other peoples carelessness and this one was one ill not soon forget. -

This quaint little house and restaurant offers casual dining and a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of strip mall/chain restaurants that so many consider "great food" in San Antonio.
We frequent Candlelight for breakfast and occasionally do lunch there. The menu is fresh and daily specials incorporate seasonal fruits/veggies. Free Wi-Fi makes it a convenient place to catch up on news and read the paper on a lazy Saturday morning. The patio is quite large and offers the chance to dine alfresco. -

Much more than just coffee.
Candlelight is my home away from home in San Antonio. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent lounging around on the couches as I either avoid studying or pretend to study... just kidding, kind of.
It's hard to not feel comfortable when you walk in and are greeted not by a standard restaurant scene but by squishy couches, lopsided tables, and interesting art hanging up on the walls... It's more of a living room feel than that of a dining establishment.
First off, the coffee is wonderful. Cappuccino, espresso, black, whatever, it's good. And if you order regular coffee, the delightful server will hand you a random mug (they're all different) for you to go fill.
Delicious dinners, whether you want a quick salad or a sit down meal with a friend. If you want to study during the day (don't at night, it gets loud), enjoy a glass of wine, or sit out on the back patio and enjoy a beer and a smoke, you'll find what you're looking for.
There's a large wine list, if you have questions, the bartenders are amazingly friendly and helpful. You'll also see a large glass jug full of sangria and floating fruit... it's hard to pass up.
Most importantly, brunch is served Sunday mornings from 10-2, with endless mimosas for only 10 bucks. Self serve. Can't beat that! Try their special Candlelight blend of coffee, and the huevos rancheros.
Cozy feel, great location, quite close to Trinity / Incarnate Word, you can park at the office near by after hours, enjoy! -

Coming back to S.A. for my summer break I had Candlelight on my radar to visit before heading back for fall semester. I miss this place!!
I've been here several times and 'Candlelight' never disappoints! Great variety of drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), good food, reasonably priced, and always consistent. The employees are always nice and service has never lacked. What makes it a 5-star is you have all that plus a great environment and ambiance. I recommend the Marsala and the Veggie Bake!
Also, don't forget the decadent cakes out on display! Yummy! -

The best find in San Antonio - this is my new home when in the city. A cafe-wine bar - restaurant with off-kilter ambience and friendly staff. The casual arrangement of sofas & free wifi allowforhours spent reading or working, the food is great & wine selection excellent. Plus you can buy a pitcher of sangria for not very much! Lovethis place!

I really enjoy this place! I'd give it five stars if their wi-fi had worked. :( I love their laid-back feel. Candlelight Coffee House is an awesome place for a late lunch or a dinner with friends, where the music is low, the food is priced right, and, oh, there's a bar! I've tried the sangria, and I think it's great! Large tall glass for a little less than seven bucks!
I've gone here a lot and wish it were only just a bit closer to me. -

This place has been around for a while...I remember coming here many years ago before I moved to another city. I recently started coming here again after moving back to SA, and it hasn't changed. Service is quick and friendly, and their offerings are usually excellent. The desserts and mimosas, in particular, are excellent. They also do some evilly wonderful things with waffles and pancakes. The ambience of Candlelight is also very pleasing.
The only downside is that parking can be quite a challenge, particularly at peak times. Other than that, though, I'd highly recommend it. -

Me and the bf dined here on Saturday night and really enjoyed it overall. The ambiance is still as I remembered from hanging out there in high school. Love that the couches and coffee tables keep the people in for just drinks in a more intimate setting and those in for food with access to tables. Just head on over to the bar, look over a menu, and order... just like it's always been (which can be a little frustrating since there is no instruction to do this anywhere--you have to figure it out if you've never been before). It was a little busy when we arrived, but not bad, and there were still several places to sit available when we left around 9 p.m.
The first few courses were just okay for me, but my bf liked them very much. We ordered the soup of the day (curried zucchini) and a caesar salad. The soup was very fresh tasting with a hint of curry, but was barely above a squash puree with stock added--really great and light if that's what you're looking for, but I expected a little more umph, I guess. The salad dressing was a little too creamy for my taste, but very good if you're into that style of caesar dressing. We also got a spinach artichoke dip that was too mayonnaise-y for me (I prefer the cheesy kind), but also really good if the Cali-style one is your preference.
Our entrees were both pasta dishes. The Mediterranean pasta basically used the spinach artichoke dip as a base--which I liked in this warm presentation, just not the cold app. It was tossed with penne, and topped with olives, feta, and other veggies. The alfredo was a big hit for me, with the blend of veggies nicely complementing a creamy, but not greasy alfredo sauce.
We ended the meal with a couple of coffees and a slice of Kahlua cake. The coffee was really great and made me think about all the years in school I'd corrupted it with cream and sugar. The dessert was a little on the sweet side, but the light frosting, moist cake, and hint of Kahlua made it a great compliment to the coffee.
Will definitely be back in the future for a dessert and coffee nightcap at least!Listed in: NoDo Gems

Growing up here in SA, I have no idea why I had never gone here. I guess I never heard of it. A friend took me here back in December for a drink after good news about his upcoming parenthood.
The wine/beer selection was great, especially since it is a "coffee" shop. Great prices, delectable desserts, great atmosphere!
I have gone several times since, at different times of day, with different staff, sat in all the different areas and I am always pleased and surprised with something. I love the old magazines laying around the old vintage furniture, the waterfalls on the shaded patio, the eclectic mix of mugs, everything. The prices are great, food is great, coffee is amazing and I cant think of ANYTHING wrong with this gem!

Very quaint place! Went for Sunday brunch (be sure to get there early) it was packed after only being open for 20 mins. I hope to visit again when we get cooler weather and sit outside on the large patio. Food was great I had the veggie omlette and my friend had the pancakes. I can't wait to get back there!

Candlelight is definitely my go-to location for a great place to meet up with friends and grab a cup of coffee during the week.
Not only is the staff friendly, think Cheers where everybody knows your name, the regular coffee brew choices are incredible. And that's in addition to a whole flurry of specialty caffeinated drinks, wine and beer.
The food and desserts are prepared by a regular full time chef, not just a staff member in the back throwing together some cold cuts for a sandwich. I'm talking spinach/artichoke dip that melts in your mouth, fresh pastas, artful sandwiches on focatia bread - the works.
For brunch I recommend the eggs benedict with salmon - to die for! Add in a steaming cup of coffee and a bottomless mimosa and its where you'll find me practically every sunday.
The patio is luscious with a koi pond, umbrellas to block the mid-day sun and lots of tables to choose from. At night the ambiance is set with delicate white lights, star lanterns and the sounds of live music wafting over from nearby night clubs.
Indoors the atmosphere is chill with lots of cozy gathering areas full of chairs and couches. Feel free to snag a traditional table in the middle or chilax on a couch. Its wherever you feel comfortable.
Enjoy the wifi for skyping or sudying, the staff wont bug you. This is going to be your new home away from home. Grab a refill on your coffee, stay a while!
This is by far my favorite evening hang out spot to just chill and relax with friends. Its also a great place to go solo and meet new people, scope out the work of local artists and read a book. -

OK, as I start this review, let me say that i WANTED to have a great experience. I have heard nothing but great things about this place and often wondered why I have never tried it out yet.
Let me set the scene. We arrive at 11:25p.m. last night. (Friday) They close at midnight. Upon entering, we were not greeted. We walked in and sat at the bar. The place was empty. A guy (who later turns out to be the manager) appears. He doesn't say a word. Or even encourage anyone to help us. All I wanted to do was order ONE Miller Lite.
The bartender keeps washing classes and one girl is helping her. After nobody makes eye contact or says anything to us for several minutes, I asked, "Is it too late to order a beer?" The bartender keeps cleaning. The other girl says, "OH, I thought _____ helped you already! So sorry! The bartender doesn't even look up.
She took our order and we closed our tab right then.
The manager kept coming over and very loudly telling the girls "It's time to get out of here." Which is SO rude when all I want to do is finish half a beer at 11:35p.m.
About 15 minutes to close, 4 friends of the bartenders showed up and they were SO CHATTY! The girls even stopped what they were doing to make them drinks and even eat for a couple of minutes with them.
My boyfriend is in the service industry, so I know that it does take time to close down a bar/area, etc. But this was just horrible customer service.
When I suggested we not come back at this time anymore, my boyfriend said I expect too much from bartenders and this is normal.
NOT at places that I frequent.
So, if it was up to me, I would not be back. BUT because so many people have such great things to say, I will try this place again some time. -

I met my blind date here for brunch. The coffee was great and the food delicious. I have to admit that my opinion is probably biased thanks to the fine male specimen I shared my meal with, but overall I liked the place very much.
Off-street parking was no big deal even though the place was pretty much full when I was there. -

Candlelight Coffeehouse is a cute place to grab dessert and a coffee. I had the fettuccine alfredo, and my husband had the tuna melt. Both of us felt a little queezy later on that night...so I wouldnt go back for the food, We did share a slice of carrot cake, which was really good! They only sell beer and wine, so its not a full bar..boo. But its a nice getaway from your typical San Antonio bars.

One word summary: sucks.
Two reviews, same result:
1) Food: Went on a sunday morning because I wanted lox and bagels. Was ignored by waitstaff (I came in and left in disgust on 2 prior occasions because of this). Eventually I made a sharply-worded comment and was noticed, seated, and served. And how was my meal? The coffee wasn't memorable. The lox and bagels was incredibly salty. So salty, in fact, that most people would not be able to stomach it -- I could because I really love salt. It was a bagel they had thawed from the freezer. Really pathetic for a $12 or so meal on a Sunday morning.
2) Drinks: Came on a Friday night. Was ignored, of course, but eventually took a seat (apparently it's the customer's job to realize that he is to seat himself after being ignored long enough -- there was no sign indicating that I should seat myself). My party and I ordered sangria which was decent but for a fairly steep price consisted of way too much ice and way too little alcohol. Rip-off.
One last point: I'm not tall, but I had to go to three different tables before finding a seat-table combination that could accommodate me. The proprietors probably think this sort of feature lends the dining room some style or personality, but it doesn't. It just inconveniences the customers. Just like how it's our responsibility to know that we are supposed to seat ourselves. Variations on a theme.
Don't even bother coming here. This place needs to either get its act together or go out of business. Fat chance of either in these parts, though. -
Review from Kelvin P.
This is possibly the best non-fast food dining option in the N-St Mary's area. The entrees might not be made by any top chefs, but you will get to enjoy your very reasonably priced food in an eclectic atmosphere.
First, the food: it's consistent and usually comes with a salad (which seems rare these days). They have a small assortment of cakes on display and a bar constantly serving up coffee, beer, and wine. They could serve liquor, but I'm unsure.
Now, the atmosphere: I'm not terribly familiar with central San Antonio, but it seems that this area has a few gay clubs which is representative of the patrons here. The interior of Candlelight is homely and has the definite feel of a coffeehouse. Board games and books are available to use. The patio seats just as many as inside and I saw a couple cats while I was out there.
All in all, this is a great place at night to pop in and get a warm drink and dessert or have a pleasant with a couple friends.
Expect to spend $20-30 for a couple during dinnertime. -

Feels like a "FRIENDS" atmosphere. C'mon Friends fans...you know what I'm talking about.
Love the ambience. Your choice of comfortable seatings. And there's plenty. And the people there were characters as they were. No set crowd...pretty much anybody and anybody are in there. Laid-back, I can see people wi-fi-ing.
Great food, and a a surprising choice of beers. And I'm not just talking about the domestic beers, a bunch of imported ones also.
Love Love Love it here. Would definately be a regular if I lived nerby. -

My sister came in town for a visit and wanted to go someplace that served wine with a nice, comfortable patio area. I drew a blank. So we looked up and found Candlelight Coffee House in yelp-we're hooked!
Not only is the ambiance of the place original and eclectic, but the food is great and the prices are on target. I wish the weather in TX was nicer so you could enjoy the sweet patio area more months of the year. I suggest checking out the different specialty tea's(the vanilla Italian cream soda is also AWESOME).
Another neat thing about CCH is that they provide all sorts of board games for their guests to play and enjoy. Where else can you sip on a nice glass of wine while kicking butt at Monopoly?!
If you're looking for a laid back, fun place to go for either a glass of wine or a tasty meal out, I recommend Candlelight Coffee House for sure! -

A true San Antonio gem! I can't believe I lived in San Antonio for six years before visiting Candlelight. Great ambiance, yummy (and very affordable) food and free wi-fi.
Go for brunch and sit outside if the weather allows. It's absolutely perfect! And you can't beat the $10 bottomless mimosas. The spinach chicken salad is DIVINE and I'm a chicken salad snob. Trust me!
On my last visit, they rang up the wrong order. They replaced it with the correct one, refunded me the difference and didn't charge me for my sangria. WIN!
If you've lived in San Antonio for a while and haven't checked this place out, do yourself a favor and do so. You won't regret it! -
Review from Becky T.
Awesome Sunday brunch. $3 single mimosa or $9 bottomless, need I say more? They also have quiche, pancakes, and waffles special of the days. I got the shrimp and roasted pepper quiche which was really good and my friend got the lemon blueberry pancakes which were also tasty. My quiche came with a heaping bowl of melon and was really filling for under $8. The place was comfortable and cozy. They had shelves full of board games you can play and they also have a full bar with an extensive collection of wines. Will have to come back for dinner.
*How I really know it's a good place: cats lazing out in the sunlight on their patio. -

Ummm, can I just live here? I've had Candlelight bookmarked for nearly 1.5 years and finally came here for dinner today. I feel so at home at Candlelight...perfectly dim lights, comfy sofas, genuinely friendly service, and oh-my-gawd-I'm-in-heaven baked brie with brown sugar & pecans. For dinner tonight I had a half-Caprese-sandwich with garden salad + blush vinaigrette. The salad was undoubtedly fresh and my sandwich was basiley-delicious. The vinaigrette was also quite yummy - it had a slight sweet hint of honey.
I will certainly be back...OFTEN! It is conveniently close and in walking distance - and I am definitely making it a place to study. -

As said by other yelpers- this place gets packed on Saturday night. Make sure you get there early. (especially for parking).
I'd say- don't come for the food. I had the vegetable quesadillas. Not too much veggies. (slightly under $8). My husband had the Veggie Bake (slightly under $10) He said it was mostly sauce. We went for our friends birthday dinner. Both him and our other friend enjoyed their meals. (pasta). We also got the artichoke dip- it is good- but kinda pricey.
We all split 2 slices of cake. We got the chocolate ganache (it was very good and rich) and our friends got ... it was something almond. It was very light and fluffy. (but I liked the Chocolate cake better) These slices are slightly under $5/each.
Come for the company ... stay for the cake.
I did hear that they change the art on the walls each month- that's pretty cool. -

Great Sunday brunch! Bottomless mimosas for $10....and you can make your own so no worries too much OJ (or, on the contrary, too much champagne...there is NO such thing as too much champagne in my book)! Fantastic quiche.
Cute, charming atmosphere...great patio! Very diverse crowd makes for entertaining people watching.
[read a sign that they're now open for lunch from 11-2, I think, if you care...] -

Comfy, Quiet, Cozy, Welcoming little place hidden away in the depths of Downtown San Antonio.
This building is meant to be visited in the late afternoon or just a good evening stop. The coffee house is lite up with beautiful white lights as if it was guzzled with tiny candles. The sound of water lingers in the air due to the running fountains shooting out water on the back patio. Trees dangle down low as if they were each trying to greet you with a friendly brush across the shoulder. The porch creeks as you walk up the wooden stairs.
As you swing open the old white door a dim light will sooth your eyes and you can fixate on the many wine bottles lined up in front of you. A circular bar stands to our left and the room pushes open and is filled with four-seater and two-seater tables. Sofas and Love seats scattered about. Coffee tables filled with scrabble words and cards rest between the comfy sofas. umbrellas cover the tables out on the patio. cobblestone ground. The smells are amazing. The laughter and warm conversations fly through the air like spring butterflies. Everything about this little coffee shop is purely unique. You can have lunch, dinner, a snack, dessert, coffee, shakes, wine, anything that would seem to comfort a person Candlelight will have it here.
Freshly brewed coffee tickled my tongue on my last adventure here. Smooth yet bold. Just perfect.
The ambience within the walls of the building and gates is magnificent.
Great for friends, family, kids, dates, meetings.
SImply beautiful. -

Great brunch spot and use seasonal ingredients to create some of the items.
There wasn't much of a wait when I went and we were able to find a table easily.
I had the seasonal waffles which were fabulous and my boyfriend had the smoked salmon scrabble and could go without the eggs.
The only weird thing was there was no waiters, you paid at the counter. But overall, a great place for brunch. -

I moved to the neighborhood a little over a week ago and I've eaten here about 5 times. Love the Moroccan chicken (spicy, good, not moroccan food, but it's own special flavor), honey glazed chicken, but my special favorite is the pasta with shrimp -- delectable flavor. The sandwiches are also tasty.
Order at the bar, take a flag and have a seat on the comfy sofas (good for studying), cozy tables, or on the gorgeous patio next to the pond.
The bartenders are friendly and will happily tell you about their favorite items on the menu. The grandmotherly cook will bring the food straight out to your table with artful presentation. I sometimes forget that this is a "coffee shop," it feels more like urban sheik dining in big city college town X. I can get a good meal for under $10 and I can hang out here and chat or study for as long as I want.

I've been going to Candlelight for almost ten years now and I still cannot get enough of the place!
I love the low-key vibe, the comfortable couches, the decently priced wine, the cake, The Cake, THE CAKE!! They have good coffee and pretty alright food too. The outdoor seating is some of the best available in San Antonio and the staff is super friendly.
If you want to go out but still kind of feel like you're in your backyard, this is a great place to hang out. -

Even though I go to the St. Marys area every weekend I completely miss this place every time. It's right on the street but it's covered in these great trees so I always see it right as I'm passing it by.
I finally went in a few days ago and it was great. The area and ambiance of the whole place is so relaxed. I went in to have a drink with a couple of friends of mine. I didn't really have any expectations because I had only seen it from the outside but it definitely surprised me. It's a lot bigger then I had originally thought it was. So much fun to hang out in the back patio as well.
The prices are pretty great so I'll definitely be going back there. I found out that they have free wi-fi so I'll probably try it out next during the day to do some work. -

Went on a Saturday night and it was so crowded practically had to fight to get corner for my friends and I. The atmosphere was really nice, everyone was in a good mood just laughing and talking. Not the kind of place to go and meet new people everyone pretty mush stayed in the groups they came in, but a nice place to just hang out if your looking for a nice change of scenery.
Coffee was good and the red velvet cake was delicious! -

What an excellent place for hanging out. Brunch, study or just hang out.
Went to brunch here. The bottomless mimosa's are awesome!! You can make them yourself. Trouble! Food was excellent brunch-fare. Can get a crowded but that's what makes it a lively place.
Bartenders/waiter are helpful and entertaining.
Definitely a great place to hangout at the couches by the window and study or play a board game. Italian chocolate cake was too die for. It's was just a decadent mess of chocolate.
It's simply a great place to pop-in with friends or by yourself and waste a couple hours either drinking coffee or sipping some wine. -

Everytime I come here, I still love it as much as last time. I love the choices of hot tea, my particular favourite - Black currant tea! I haven't found anywhere in town that serves black currant flavour stuff. Their tuna melt always fill me up and it's delicious. Not to mention, I love the choice of music since they usually plays what I listen in my car! Of course, can't beat the free wifi and the comfy couches. Well, I can go on and on why I love this place. You just have to see it yourself!
