Review from Jenn S.
Los Angeles, CA
I grew up in Youngstown...an old steel town now governed by mobsters and crack whores. It truly is a great place to raise a family.
It's also a great place to eat.
For as far back as I can remember, there's always been an endless amount of amazing Italian food. Up until I was 13, though, the only options for Mexican were "Taco Bell" and "Chi Chi's".
No thank you.
Then, all of a sudden, Cancun appeared on the scene in the late 90s.
It is delicious. It is authentic. You can eat a full meal for less than you make in an hour working minimum wage in Ohio. Their chips are free and always fresh. The margaritas are amazing, which I was able to discover at quite an early age due to their lax ID policy ;)
Ok...there is indeed a catch. They've been shut down once or twice for health code violations. I don't eat animals, so I figure I escaped danger. But on the plus side, they always re-open with a vengeance! You've gotta respect the determination.Listed in: Y-Town Was My Town

Review from Bill M.
Canfield, OH
I've eaten here before. It was pretty good years ago.
This time the place looked different. Substantially smaller, more hacked up than I recall and a little light on staff. I asked and was told that the place is under new ownership, different members of the same family. The name will be changed to Senor Al's. You'd think the best foot would be forward right now. Sadly, the foot landed square in my a$$.
Here are the lowlights:
- the first table we sat at was dirty (in a spilled drink way)
- one barmaid/hostess/waitress, very stressed, not very competent
- our draft beers showed up in warm mugs
- when she brought us our chips/salsa, she had a tray of drinks, as she dropped off the chips, she also dropped off the drinks.....right in my lap.
- I wasn't offered a towel with my lemonade shower (or an apology)
- I was encouraged to sit at another table, the dirty one
- the second draft beer was just as warm as the first
- the food was decent, but my sticky leg kept distracting me
So we finish eating. The waitress had checked on us once, then asked if we needed anything else. I said, I'll have the check. I'm waiting for her to say that they took this or that off the bill for the inconvenience. When she didn't, I assumed it would just be taken care of when she pulled things together. Nope. Full price.
One more chance for an apology or a nervous recognition of the douching I'd taken, but no, just a drop-off.
So, the next time I plan to go to Senor Al's, I'll just stay home, poor myself a warm Dos Equis, spill a little Diet Coke on my dining room table, have a seat and then ask my wife to dump a couple of lemonades in my lap and walk away. That should save me $30.
I wouldn't even consider hitting up Senor Al until he gets the place renovated. I personally will never return. There are too many other good Mexican options in the area.
The saddest thing is that I started the experience with a great deal of compassion and empathy for the waitress given her situation. Her performance turned that around quickly. -

This is the best Mexican restaurant in the Youngstown area - I kid you not. The wait staff is friendly and the food comes pretty quickly, the a la carte menu is cheap and the margarita machine is sweet. Be sure to check out Friday or Saturday evenings when you a local performer serenades you with his casio keyboard. He is awesome. So is this restaurant. I promise.

the place is good, and cheap. very cheap. Did I mention cheap?
the food is a 6 / 10 , nothing to rave about, but you can have a dinner for $10, including a beer. (the beer is 2.75) (in Boston, the "hello" is $3, and the beer $7)
when I say 6 /10 , I give Taco Bell a 1 / 10 , so be your own judge and try it (Cancun, NOT Taco B)
the service is fast and polite.
Parking is on a private lot
it is an overall very good deal
