9 reviews for Cancun Family Mexican Restaurant
i LOVE mexican food! which is hard to come by in new england, and coming from california, my standards are pretty high
so this place is AWESOME! the decor is a bit cheesy (but fine), the servers are very friendly and accommodating, and the food is GREAT!
my favorite things at a mexican place are the beans and rice, and this place has great stuff. i also had the chimichanga and the enchilada which were both really good as well. the margarita i had was fine but not great by any means.
overall, whenever i want mexican food, this is where i'm going =)
How can any one of these posters even hint that this is authentic??? Have you ever had real mexican food before????? I am in shock..unless it is the owner posting his own review.
Cancun is very very bland. Real mexican restaurants use mexican spices, serve their dishes with fresh slices of avacado, make their own corn torillas and guacamole. Real mexican restaurants serve traditional dishes..like SOPES, ENTOMATADAS, TAMALES, GORDIDAS, CECINA ENCHILADAS, BISTEC RANCHERO, BANDERAZO....NOT TO MENTION CARNE ASADA, BARBACOA, PASTOR, CHORIZO or LEGUA TACOS, served in freshly made corn tortillas served simply with chopped onions and fresh cilantro. Real Mexican restaurants have homemade tomitillo sauce, homemade smokey red sauce, and homemade salsa. Real mexican restaurants have fresh fruit drinks like, HIBISCUS, TAMARINDO, GUAVA etc.. and real mexican rice...not bland food, flour tortillas and uncle bens rice.
I don't believe the owners are Mexican.. No possible way they have ever cooked authentic Mexican or ever lived in Mexico. This place would never survive in an urban setting.
PS. If you are unfamiliar with the dishes and drinks described above, then you have not eaten traditional authentic Mexican food.
I just moved to the area and was very excited when I ready the reviews. I went there and I was like this place is going to be good but I was wrong. The salsa was watery and gross. The margaritas tasted very funny. They were not good either and the food was all water too and mushy. I was not impressed and probably will not go back even if it is in walking distance. Plus I have mexican in the city for lower priced. Very overpriced for the quality if food. GROSS!!
I have heard alot about this place and was curious to try it out. We were a party of 5 and walked in without reservations. It was in the middle of the afternoon and the place was quiet. The decor was pretty unique with wild looking chairs that the backs were cut out as flowers or mexican dancers or animals and very brightly painted. The booths were high with reliefs of the same type of artwork. Very impressive. Lively Mexican music piped in.
We sat down and looked at the menu which had the usual fare for a Mexican restaurant...tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas...etc. Warm chips and salsa were put on either ends and kept on coming once empty. I ordered the chicken fajitas, 2 others ordered burritos and can't remember the other orders. They came out pretty quickly...I'm sure because of the quietness of the afternoon. The fajitas were delicious! The chicken very tender and perfectly seasoned. The guacamole was very smooth and flavorful with no bitterness. John loved the burrito, tender steak and plenty of cheese.
All in all...not bad. I just thought it would have been more....hmmmm I guess more REAL authentic Mexican like I heard other people say it was rather than the Americanized version of Mexican food. Oh well..the quest continues on.
We actually got to eat in last week. We got a great table overlooking the water. I tried an El Presidente Marg while The Man got a Blue Moon. Mine was better.
Skipped apps since the free salsa and chips were fresh and hot.
Entrees -- I got the vegeterian sampler. It was very tasty and the chile relleno was perfect. My only problem is there was way too much cheese in the other dishes. But I guess that's the meat substitute.
Hubby tried Chile Verde plate w/ rice and refrieds. It was almost as good as my Mom's:) Tender chunks of pork in a tomatillo/garlic sauce -- perfect for the cool night.
We're trying the fajitas next time! Everyone around us seemed to be ordering them and the palce was fragrant with the smell!!
All in all -- good family restaurant with excellent food!

I just cleaned my kitchen for a party which meant take out tonight :) I have been dying for Mexican… Read more »
Love this place. My wife and I are big fans of the Acapulco's/Cancun's chain of restaurants. It's clean, service is always good, the food is always served HOT, and the quality is consistently good. Portions are large enough to satisfy my best appetite. And damn does the food come out of the kitchen fast!
So far it's the best Mexican fare I've found in the Worcester area.
Cancun has the tastiest and most authentic Mexican food that I have had the pleasure to try in or near Worcester. Also, the atmosphere at Cancun has always been welcoming (the decorations, especially the booths and tables, are really impressive) and the service has always been friendly and prompt. I recommend that you try the three-enchilada platter and the variety of flavored margaritas!
Authentic Mexican Food is a medley of fresh ingredients, well spiced, prepared with sauces and spices that compliment the natural tastes of the foods. Authentic Mexican Food is not by its nature expensive, it is just good and fresh. Cancun Family Mexican Restaurant may be tailored to a family dining experience, but it is about as far from Cancun Mexico as you could get. I have one suggestion for those thinking to patronize this eatery: STAY AWAY
CLEANLINESS & ATMOSPHERE: 4 / 5
- A casual, colorful and festively decorated atmosphere well kept and clean.
- Well light, comfortable seating and excellent view of a country lake.
FOOD QUANTITY: 3/5
- Serving sizes were quite sizable in their portions.
FOOD QUALITY: 0 / 5
- The first sign of a pending problem was the corner stone of a Mexican meal, the salsa. Now if you rate ketchup as a spicy experience you may like what Cancun Family Mexican Restaurant calls salsa. For the tastes at our table though the salsa was something you would likely get from the bargain isle at the local supermarket, with a label of "MILD" on the label. The salsa dished up for us was watery, bland, and just boring. Not a good sign.
- The main course arrived and it was obvious something was just not right. The artificially red colored rice was so overcooked that it was soggy and sat in a puddle of the cooking water and when tasted had the consistency closer to mash potatoes than rice. Whoever cooked this either was having a very bad day, or knew nothing of what Mexican rice should be like.
- The meat portion of my meal was supposed to be chicken, but unfortunately it was bone dry and so bland that a chicken fillet from the Burger King down the street would have had more spice and more texture. It was just BAD.... When the waitress was advised of this she took the plate back to the kitchen and returned many minutes later with the corrected version that was no better.
- Last chance was the desert. We ordered and it arrived, unfortunately it was so undercooked that it was inedible, chewy, raw dough in ice cream. YUK!!!
- If you love Uncle Ben's instant rice, if you have never ventured beyond MILD in your spice enjoyment, and have very low standards on what is acceptable quality you may likely love Cancun Family Mexican Restaurant in Grafton.
VALUE FOR THE DOLLAR: 0 / 5
- For much of the meal you could not have paid ME to eat what was served.
- If you want to spend your money and time to see a lake out a window and color colorful painted decorations on the wall while eating food that is as far from Mexican as you can get, this is your place. If you want Mexican food prepared by someone that knows what Mexican food should be I highly suggest you go elsewhere. Even a fast food meal from Moe's in Shrewsbury would far outshine any offering we experienced in our visit to Cancun Family Mexican Restaurant.
- Normally we would have carried the leftovers back home for later, but in the case of Cancun Family Mexican Restaurant's leftovers... we had no desire to carry anything back home.
SERVICE:
- Servers were seemingly totally unknowledgeable to what Mexican Food should be. When we tried to explain we got a deer-in-headlight return glance and not apology or accommodation. The manager never showed up, even after being requested. So we departed knowing we would never return.
SOAPBOX: In case you don't know, your server is likely working for about $2 an hour (if they are lucky). In the USA if you leave a tip that it is NOT at least 10 to 15% of you meal price (before taxes) you are being CHEAP. Sure there are reasons to leave less (bad service being a big reason) but these folks, working outside the 5-Star Boston eateries, are likely struggling to survive and place a meal on their own tables. A few extra coins directed their way, in return for their good service, can make all the difference for them and their families.
If your waitress kept your drinks filled, asked you how things were, and responded to your needs a tip of 15% to 20% is not at all extravagant. Certain profiles of customers tend to the CHEAP tipping side of things as normal practice. Be a stand up customer, treat them with respect and do not think you are being cool by leaving less than10% for an hour+ worth of attention from your server. If they did right by you then you really should tip 15% to 20% for their time and efforts for you and your associates. Tip in cash & fairly.
We first had some great Patrone Margaritas. These were super and reasonably priced.
The salsa and chips at the bar were good. Not great, but good. I think the salsa at Moe's is comparable, however, at Moe's there are many choices and here I had only one choice.
We were seated quickly and the service was good and speedy.
I had a beef taco and a beef chimichanga. The food was average to good. I would definitely go back, however, I think I'd like to try the fajitas.
The portions were big and reasonably priced. In fact, when the bill came, we were pleasantly surprised.
Good place, not great. I would have liked to see some specials and wished the food was a tad better, but again, I'm going back and next time I'll try something different.
