I'm torn here.  Stopped in for lunch today.  They took 10 minutes just to seat us and the place was not even close to being full.  It took a grand total of 47 minutes from the time we walked in the door until we got our food.  WAAAAY too long.  Thing is, they more than made up for it with the food.  I had the pork chop and that thing was HUGE and soooo good.  Big ol' mountain of mac and cheese, and that stuff is the shiz.  My wife had the damn chicken rice vegetable special for the day thing-a-ma-bob, and she cleaned her plate, all 90 pounds of her.  Bill was like $35.  I was planning to give only 2 stars but that food made up for it.

Maybe they knew I was pissed bc of the wait so they hooked us up phat on the food, I dunno...

Loved this place for lunch and will come back for dinner. 2 adults and 2 kids ate very well for $40, so good overall value.
My wife had the french dip sandwich - very good bread generous meat portions and perfect au jus with fries.
I had the blackened prime rib with portabella mushroom sandwich. The flavor was awesome though the prime rib was too fatty and should have been better trimmed.
Oldest daughter had the kids ribs and fries... they were the best kid ribs I have ever eaten. Perfectly slow cooked with nice hickory flavor.
Youngest daughter had their kids homemade mac-n-cheese. Again amazing flavor and perfectly prepared.

The decor was gorgeous and the service was attentative. We will definitely go back.

Canal Street Grille, what a gem!  A little hard to get to, considering it is plainly visible right off the 99, but worth the short trip to Jack Tone road, over the 99 and a left on Canal St.  This place is great!  The atmosphere is so calm and relaxed, with the plushest booths you have ever sat in!  And even when small children are present, the surroundings just seem to suck the sound right out of the air, leaving you to carry-on your high power convo discussing the chances of the Sharks to win Lord Stanley's Cup or how the Raiders are almost respectable for once... ;-)

As for the food, to start with, I love French Onion Soup, and Canal Street Grille has a good French Onion Soup.  Also, they have a delicious clam chowder on Fridays.  The burgers are great, and if you like a corned beef or a rueben sandwhich, well ask for extra knapkins and enjoy!!!  They also have very inventive specials, many of which I have tried and they rarely disappoint!  Lastly, the kids love to go here and have the Monte Cristo sandwhich and get the home made potatoe chips for a side, the chips are great and one of the few places around to get a Monte Cristo, let alone a Monte Cristo that is actually edible!

I have not tried for dinner yet, but I am sure it is good and hope to soon!

We had heard about CSG from several people. We wanted to impress a client and brought them for dinner. Was not disappointed. Food and Wine was very good. Service was less so. Slow and inattentive. Second time, dinner special was over powered by the seasonings.  Service was spotty at best. My before dinner beverage (coffee) tasted old and NEVER, not once, was I asked for a refill. I will try lunch or sandwiches next time before we cross this place off the list.

Ok so I went here thinking this place was going to be good! Showed up on a Sunday and there was no wait for a table, things were off to a good start but that's when things went downhill. There was only one server for the restaurant side my sandwich came prepared wrong, the ciabatta roll it was served on was extremely hard and dry! This will be the last time I patronize this business.

Me and my good friend would eat here on occasion, to the point where they knew us and what we would order.  The service was always slow even when the place was not full, our waitress hardly ever came to check on us, but the food was always good so we kept coming despite the bad service.  We recently ordered food for a work function and was extremely disappointed at the whole process from start to finish.  We will never eat here again.

Found this place last month, been back many time since.  The portobello mushroom stuffed with crab is a delicious appetizer, and big enough to fill you up.  The rib eye is the most tender and flavorful I've had anywhere in the Central Valley.  And the cioppino was incredibly good, fresh, and was a nice big portion.

It's a bit pricey but it's worth it.

Outstanding food & great service.  I am not usually easy to please, so to have eaten here over 20 times and the fact that I can only think of two very small dislikes - creme brulee was not the best & I had a sandwich that had gotten a tiny bit soggy once.  That is at minimum 18/20 perfect dining experiences and the other two were darn good.

They have a grilled cheese lunch special on Monday's with roasted red peppers & tomatoes that is to die for....coupled with their ever so delicious French onion soup and you have a very fabulous & hearty meal.

There is not one thing on the menu that is not good...they have even improved the creme brulee after my initial experince.  The starters are amazing with the baked brie being my favorite.  Some of my family favorite entrees include the flat iron steak, pork chops, Nuna's Baked Mostaccioli, and they have the absolute best macaroni & cheese ever!

We have had several parties in their banquet room.  Outstanding is the only word for the service, food & overall experience.  I can highly recommend Canal Street for all your meals out.  Enjoy!

I've been to Canal Street three times and I'm not sure I'll be giving them any more chances.

The first time I was there it was for lunch and I had a chicken Caesar salad. There wasn't anything wrong with the salad, but there wasn't anything that great about it either. It was your average Caesar with slightly spicy chicken.

The second time I went there it was for dinner with three others. Two of us had the veal scallopini and the other two had a salmon dish that was a special that night. The two that had the salmon cleaned their plates- and not just because the wait for the food left them considerably hungry by the time it arrived. The veal scallopini, however, had so much pepper on it that one couldn't taste anything else. It was literally like eating black pepper and nothing else.

The third time I went there both myself and the two other people in my party had the prime rib. And oh how I wish I didn't. It tasted like liquid smoke. As soon as it was set down before me (which took about thirty minutes despite there only being eight other people in the restaurant), I could smell that artificial smoke, but I decided to actually try it anyway. Big mistake. It was like eating chemicals and coal. It was decently tender though and the twice-baked potato it came with was very tasty.

I'll probably give it another chance, at least for lunch since that was pretty decent and there aren't too many other options if one finds themselves in Ripon. The execution of the dishes here definitely need some work, but in theory it could be a pretty good place. As of now though, I'd recommend driving to Modesto to find something better.

Excellent, stellar, incredible food. Coming back from a weekend in Yosemite, bf and I stopped here on the way home to SF. Crab stuffed Portobella with Gruyere was absolutely phenomenal. For entrees, the bf delighted in the smoked pork chop with homemade apple-onion chutney and Mac n Cheese with white cheddar and Canadian bacon. The pork must've been marinated because the flavors were so full-bodied, much like my Chardonnay, that we were simply blown away. I had the Halibut topped with a cream sauce, shrimp and crab. This was served with a delicate Spinach and tomato risotto, not too heavy, perfectly done. We Mmmmm'd and Ahhhh'd the whole way through the meal. For dessert, the bf had a massive piece of cheesecake and I had a nectarine pie. Both quite good. $96 including tip for an appetizer, two entrees, two desserts and two drinks=money extremely well spent. Can't wait to return!!!

On the way home from Tracy today we stopped in Ripon and ate at the Canal Street Grille. It was about 4pm when we got there and it was DEAD. There wasn't anyone neither eating nor working the front desk (red flag)... After waiting more than 10 min and searching for someone we finally got seated. The dining area way nicely decorated, but was missing something that popped! There just was not too much live/green/flower/plant like things anywhere. I think the table would have looked much better with maybe a candle or a flower of any kind. We get the menus and the pages were dirty and slightly torn. I was now kind of thinking "uh oh another red flag...Not good". Once seated both my partner and I open our napkins and our sliver wear was dirty.... Dang... We were both thinking "uh oh ANOTHER red flag?" We placed the dirty silverware in view for the server (on the end of the table). The server took over 13 min to show up to our table to take our order (keep in mind we are the ONLY people eating here)... He takes our order and doesn't take the dirty silverware back to the kitchen.

My partner ordered a salad so when the salad showed up with the server we had to ask for new clean silverware. The server came back rather quickly this time with the clean silverware.  He knew she was waiting to eat her salad. She said the salad was good and tasted fresh, but it needed a bit more dressing.
Here is what we ordered: Monte Cristo sandwich with the French fries, seasonal fruit, and a side of ranch. My partner ordered a French dip sub the fries for a salad (+$1), ice tea and water. The kitchen prepared our food rather fast! I was impressed with the size of the Monte Cristo and made love to it with my eyes! My partner was also impressed with the size of her French dip!

Here is where it started to get a little rough again... The server forgot the side of ranch and of course he has already walked away from the table before asking if we needed anything else. We then had to wait another 10+ min and no one showed at our table. I had to get up and ask someone to get our server (VERY UNHAPPY). In the time in-between waiting for the server to NEVER show up my partner and I had tried our food. She couldn't eat but just a bite of her French dip because it was SO smoky in flavor. She said meat very tender and would have been PERFECT without all the smoke.  My Monte Cristo was AWESOME, BUT it was missing the jelly/jam/preserves!  I also noticed that they gave me a weird sweet/sour dipping sauce for my Monte Cristo... I tried it and didn't like it at all. I don't know about everyone else but whenever I had eaten a Monte Cristo, I have always been given some kind of jelly or preservers for dipping.

Okay, the server is back now!! YAY! My partner tells him about the French dip being to smoky and he was very nice about asking if she wanted something else to eat instead. While she was making up her mind I asked the server about the ranch and if they had any jelly or jam for my sandwich? They did not have any jam or jelly. :( That really sucked! Finally, my partner makes up her mind and orders the three cheese ravioli with the Alfredo sauce. She waited about 6 min to get her new dish and was VERY happy with it. She said the sauce and the ravioli were SUPURB!

AGAIN with the waiting! We waited for the server to come back so we could get a box and the bill. We FINALLY got the box but the bill was nowhere in sight. I AGAIN had to get up and find someone that would get our server. We WERE going to get the crème brulee, but we were too tired of waiting and were ready to go home. We get the bill and they discounted the bill for my partners order and took off the salad. That was a small but good start to redemption.

I guess we will (maybe) have to eat there again and see if this was just a bad day or if this is how it usually goes. After reading the other reviews posted on here we were excited to eat there.  We both were VERY disappointed to say the least in our dining experience. I was so happy to find a restaurant that servers my favorite sandwich the Monte Cristo!  We are not sure if we would spend that much money again to eat there just to receive the same bad service.

I want to steal EVERY 'C' from every sign of this restaurant.  But I'm supposed to be a mature and responsible adult.

This establishment takes my breathe away.  Everything is good.  The service is good.  The food is excellent.  The decor is beautiful.

Although the food was prepared well it took 20 minutes after the salad was served to get the main course.

The atmosphere was more diner than restaurant and for a $100 check I expected a restaurant atmosphere.

The quieter diners were seated next to noisy unruly large family groups.

Customer service at the bar lacked professional attention to detail. My wine glass reeked of bleach and the bar tender showed no concern over my complaint.

This restaurant has the potential for high end dining and has fallen short with small town approach.

I went back for dinner last night, but this time I took my friend to share the Monte Cristo sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious.  This has always been one of my favorite sandwiches, but not many places make it, but Canal Street does it right!!!  Now my problem is that I like the Monte Cristo so much, I will always want to have it when I visit this restaurant, and there are so many things on the menu that I'd like to try.  Decisions, decisions!

Since my friend and I shared the Monte Cristo,  we had room for dessert.  I had the brownie, which was delicious, and she had the cheesecake and was kind enough to let me taste it.  It was light and creamy.

After seeing this restaurant  from the freeway I decided to try it out. It was pricey but I liked the different food choices. I had the Antipasto Platter as an appetizer I liked 80% of the platter. I also had the Filet  Mignon it was pretty good. And the Creme Brulee was wonderful.

The Service, Atmosphere and Facility is 5 Star, the food is 3 to 4 Star. Don't get me wrong I really like this place and I will definitely go back.

I felt the food is a little under seasoned. I am really like my herbs and salt, and I had to salt my food to attain Nirvana.

Canal Street is a wonderful place to eat, the building is impressive and the bathroom are perfect. I like a clean facility and this place does not disappoint me. In fact most of the businesses out in Yelpland (it was a yucky year eating out) could definitely learn something from this place.

It started with a phone call at 85mph on highway 99 to confirm they are open, then two fantastic people who answered the phone. Both times I called I received a courteous and professional person answering the phone.

To finding a beautiful restaurant restaurant upon driving up. I thought the place looked impressive from the highway. I was really impressed when I entered the place and checked out the different rooms.

The service was always top notch from the greeting, seating, ordering and eating.

The food is what needs some improvement, and that is simple. You just have to tell the accommodating wait staff that you would like a change. No problem.

Oh yeah don't forget to order the brea appetizer. Some food is average size, others are huge. Brea is huge.

All the clients I talked to really liked their orders and left satisfied. Some mentioned how they will return; as shall I.

    I'll be back

Reading the local paper intro to this place which is in the middle of nowhere, I guess I will have to try it :-)   Visiting at Modesto, I am craving for a better dinner, driving 10 miles isn't all that bad at all.  On a Thurs nite, there were only a few tables occupied.  The place looks decent but not high end decorated like those in the big cities.  The wine menu was quite impressive, not just how many pages but also the price !  I ordered a bottle of 07 Pahlmeyer, they ask for $75, last time I brought a bottle at Safeway, it was $65.  So their mark up was almost none for a restaurant.  This is a great place to just come out for food and drinks & wine !!!  In terms of food, I had onion soup, veal and creme bule, aren't uniquely stand out but they are decent especially in central valley out of nowhere.

My coworkers and I eat here occasionally for lunch. We often sit in the bar because it is a pretty cool place to eat lunch and they have a couple big flat screen TVs. The food here is good. I usually get a burger or one of their entree salads.

In the interest of saving time, here is the reason for minus 2 stars...the dining room feels a little like a Carrow's. Just not what you'd expect given that whole place seems so contemporary and well thought out. They don't have a lunch menu so you pay full price at lunch time and its just not very economical. $10 burger for lunch plus tax, drink, and tip and your pushing $20. Hard to justify most of the time for lunch or dinner.

There are a lot of disappointing places to eat in the Modesto/Stockton area, so I wasn't expecting much.  However, I would have to say that the lunch here is quite impressive.  This place is much better than going to the same old casual dining restaurants like Chilis or Chevys.

The first thing I noticed was the quality of the wine list.  Some of the wines you could find at Safeway or Savemart, but they also had a good selection of small production wines.  I had a glass of the Argyle Pinot Noir which was quite good.  I noticed that the prices were very good, but I think the pours were also a little small, which I didn't mind for lunch, but  could be an issue at dinner.  Overall they could have been a little more innovative with the list with wines like Copain or Novy, but still this is a great showing for the Valley

The food also was a notch above.  I ordered the steak sandwich special with a salad.  First, they hit the salad out of the park with the homemade dressing and the quality greens.  The sandwich was also awesome. It had a nice helping of grilled onions and a light blue cheese sauce that really spiced up the generous portions of steak.  My wife had the tuna salad with fries, and it was also a hit.  I'm looking forward to trying this place out for dinner when we can find a sitter for the kids.

4.5 Stars  A fairly upscale restaurant that is extremely clean, well thought out, good food, excellent service.  You can tell that they really put time, thought and lots of money into this place.  My only criticisms of this place is that you could spot a few things that had become worn since this place opened.  No big deal to me but if you are trying for the upper end than expectations are higher.  Especially with the prices this place charges.  A rib eye steak was $27.  A bit on the pricey side for me.  A nice place for a change of pace or date (in my case date night).

Went there for lunch today. This is a very nice place. The atmosphere is superb, very nice decor. I always ask for a booth my first time in a place. If my chin hits the table when I sit down then more than likely I won't be back. Here it was perfect. I walked in at 12:40 for lunch and was on my way out at 1:15. Was seated immediately by a very friendly hostess with a nice smile. Before I could take my coat off she brought me a glass of water and menu's. One for eating and one for drinking. I spent some time looking over the wine menu. They have one of the best selections of wines I have ever seen in a restaurant with the exception of North Beach in SF. This place has a very friendly ambiance. My waitress, which was the only one in the place, was constantly smiling, friendly and attentive. Not over attentive but there when you needed her. The food menu looked good enough to eat it. Excellent choices for most people. Meat, fish, veggies, you name it they got it. I had coffee with cream. They served the cream in a little porcelain pitcher. I haven't seen those since some idiot discovered he could become a millionaire by putting cream in little plastic cups. My sandwich was the ? Muffulletto ?. It was made to perfection. The only place I've ever had one as good or maybe even a little better was Etouffe. The kicker was the fries. I'm a fan of Carl's Jr. fries. These were 100% better. All in all I had a perfect lunch in a superb place. A place which I will be going back to again, more than once. For me the total tab came to 13.43. Now that's what I call acceptable.

Wow, I must have really liked this place. I normally am not this long winded. lol

I totally forgot to mention that this place when I walked in was packed, there was only 3 tables open. This waitress and the hostess were keeping everyone happy. The service here was phenomenal.

i have been there a few times, and i have liked everything i have ordered so far.  they have a nice bar on once side of the building, which is a separate room for the crowd that wants to belly up the bar and watch a game.  the wine room is also viewable from this bar area.  the main dining room is nicely decorated and still gleams from the restaurant's newness.  i will admit, could someone please change the boring mundane music (or is it muzak?)??  for a place that seems to be fairly popular with the younger crowd, it might be wise to not want to put them to sleep upon entry.

prices are fairly reasonable, but become pricey with the inclusion of any type of drink with your meal.

and yes, i will admit, i am eagerly awaiting the day the "C" in the sign burns out.

I was looking for a new place to go, that local "joint" where the family enjoys being there together.  Canal Street Grille was a great find for us.  Our family has spent several lunch and dinner meals there together, either just having an appetizer with wine (outstanding wine list), or over a full delicious meal.

Whether it is just my husband and I, or our whole family complete with a baby nephew and teen age children, the staff there makes us feel so welcome and almost predicts what we need next.

I now also get their weekly email so that I can anticipate what we might have for dinner that night!  It's a very good restaurant and the extra touches make it the kind where you want to go back again and again.

I was impressed. Not the best, but not the worst. I think the food may have tasted better if the ambiance was nicer. The poorly framed posters, and scantilly clad wannabe beach bums...well, they add something something different. The food was very good though...the steak was well made, great cut. There is a side dish though...the Hash...it is greens and potatoes and  a sweet vinegarette...Amazing!! It was really, really, really good. I wanted to tell the chef how fanstastic it was. When I go back I will sub whatever side for the hash. Everytime. Yuuuummm Yum!

    Had lunch here today.
    Family of 4-
    Son-sliders
Like some 11yr old kids, he likes his stuff pretty basic... plain so he can put as much ketchup as he wants. These come like the 2 of the the signature burgers though. This was thankfully presented to us by our waitress before we made the mistake of not ordering them plain. Different fries come with these of course my son liked my fries, my wife liked his.
    Daughter-philly cheese steak
Not too shabby, piled high with meat and cheese served with fries.
    Wife-canal burger
Good size, done perfect and juicy.
    Dad-blackened prime rib sandwich
The only sad part of the lunch. I should have ordered the burger. A thinly slice (yes one slice) of "prime rib" on a sandwich. It looked like one of the slices fell out of the philly sandwich and landed between my bread. The only thing that saved it was the taste. it had good flavor and just the right amount of horse radish mayo.

Service was great, even the hostess got in on the refills. I would have to look into one of the burgers on my next trip.

Simply a great experience. Food was excellent, service was top notch, and the family atmosphere was perfect. The steaks were cooked to perfection and I like mine "black and blue" which is hard to get right at alot of restaurants. The sauces were delicious as well. We will be back!!!

Nice new place that we were recommended to by the baker who did our wedding cake and favors. Enjoyed the food and the atmosphere is clean and relaxing. The most memorable item we have tried so far is the French onion soup. So good!

I went here to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The crab cake appetizer was on point, however the ribeye was good but not worth the $30. My wife's salmon entree was good but the portion was small for the price.

Lunch w/ Husband's college friends on a Sunday afternoon.
Wife's(me) job to "find someplace to meet halfway."-we live in Modesto they were staying  in Stockton for the Reunion weekend.
Well we lucked out b/c Canal Street Grille fit the criteria after we found out the "other" restaurant off the freeway in Ripon is closed on Sunday.
We arrived at noon on Sunday(opening time). We were the only group-6 adults and 2 kids-there from noon until 2pm. During the time we were there it seemed like the father-daughter lunch spot. I swear-4 sets of fathers taking their young teenagers for lunch. That was it!  No families after church, no couples, no one in the bar, no one was there!
The staff was very professional and attentive. I'm not sure about you but I expect this when a place is new but empty. The food arrive quickly and was hot, again, a given, right?
Okay so the actual food was so, so and a little pricey.  I had the "Canal Burger" which was a burger(no, really!) w/ caramelized onions, mushrooms and crumbled blue cheese for $11.   It was good,  cooked to medium and juicy. I had fries but I guess they have homemade potato chips too if ya want.
They have a large menu from steaks, fish, ribs all the basic american style stuff but done a dressed up.  No lunch menu or specials were offered.
So all total the bill $75 for 4 entrees and 2 appetizers We drank tap water. Friends brought a bottle of wine to drink so there might have been a corkage fee(college friends paid the bill).
