Went here for the first time last week. From what I remember, I/we: listened to a great selection of music on the jukebox, drank buckets of beer, did shots, ate a ton of popcorn, were nearly molested by a short drunk woman, probably told the bartender "i love this bar" a bit too much, dont remember walking home, puked popcorn and cheap beer till it hurt.
Can't wait to go back!
Great neighborhood bar! Nice back yard, free popcorn, good beer selection and no Park Slope douchebaggery.
Hey i love this place... Bartender is the best i love the irish guy lol his accent it the shit and also I can say if you go there often they become attentive which they have i love it ... they know my options that i normaly drink ... and also the Half hot sauce / Half bacardi 151 is the best drink they make... and they have a chill pool table and relaxing patio ... Im the mets die hard fan and anytime i go they are playing a lovely mets game
A good substitute for GYC in the off-season.
Besides, who can argue with good beer and free popcorn?
UPDATE 9/27/09: Canal bar has been transformed into a Chicago Bears bar on Sundays. Great bartenders, nice owners, free hot dogs, popcorn, and hamburgers. Lots of beer specials (buckets of beer) too. The only thing it's missing is OLD STYLE beer! Hopefully, they can get their hands on some soon. A great vibe and an excellent place to watch the Bears and Cubs.
Also... the owners recently opened Crooked Tail Cafe next door to Canal Bar. A nice cafe with coffee, sandwiches, and Chicago-style hot dogs.
clean good fun on 3rd avenue is not hard to find. When 5th avenue has the taste of mouthwash, and 4th avenue seems overrun by college kids returned from the holidays, trusty, seedy, swollen by the Gowanus , 3rd avenue does not disappoint. Canal Bar offers a pool table with about a foot of space in each direction, well poured drinks and free popcorn. Tonight, dogs were running, liquor was flowing, and aside from a regrettable lack of women and tattoos, the bar felt real. ATM is broken, bring cash.
This is "Canal" as in the Gowanus which, as you can see from the map, runs just behind it.
Ever since I introduced a buddy to this bar, he's insisted on making it a part of a bar crawl. But it should not be done. This bar is a destination in and of itself.
It hits all my checkmarks:
delirium tremens and blue point on tap and $1.75 shorties
pool table
two tvs showing the knicks
dog-friendly
feel free to have pizza delivered
multi-racial clientele
amazing jukebox: ozzy, iggy, hank sr., ray charles, stones, the who, pb&j, johnny cash, muddy waters, pixies, etc....
This place RULES! I have watched Chicago Bears games here every Sunday for this season and I have to say it feels like home. Canal Bar embraces it's diviness and serves as a middle of nowhere oasis for the friendly and good natured people of Brooklyn. This place is no pretense and if you get any attitude from anyone then point the finger back at yourself. No Douchebags (which Brooklyn bars seems to be full of nowadays) Allowed! Cheap beers and nice pool table. Great Atmosphere.
im only 21.
so yeah im young looking.
so i expect to be carded.
thats fine, i dont care.
but.
don't card me, and tell me i dont look like my i.d. picture
I ALREADY KNOW I DON'T LOOK LIKE I DID WHEN I WAS 17!
i could have told you that!
honestly, how many people dye their hair.
how many people get plastic surgery,
or glasses or whatever.
i still have the same hair color, height, eyes.
i just look younger. duh.
after i give her all my information,
i was ready to give her my ss# for a stupid beer.
but no. she said no. im still confused.
what? i honestly can say this is the first time this has happened to me.
i was so offended. and i felt so bad for the friend i was with.
maybe its because we were not from the neighborhood?
because everyone there deffinetly grilled us when we walked in.
kind of like walking into a social club your not a member of.
everyone is thinking, why are you here? this place isnt for you.
so screw canal bar. i got a bad vibe the minute i walked in.
and getting refused service dispite being 21, thats just dumb.
Canal Bar is a home away from home. I tend to get into a phase where I am at Canal Bar everyday for awhile then ease back. What can I say. BBQ Wednesdays, Buckets of beers, outdoor area. Amazing Bartenders. This place is what you want in a local dive bar. It is perfect.
This place is pretty relaxed. I like their tiny beer special (a bucket for $8). The clientele is kind of a mixed bag but the bartenders are always awesome. The jukebox is great, too. Very dive-y in a wonderful way. Can't wait to come back once it's warm again for the back yard.
I checked this place out when it first opened while walking back from Park slope to cobble hill. I kind of love that walk in the wee hours so I thought, "fuck it. I'm itching to play some pool. I'll check Canal bar out." It was summer time so I ordered a beer and got on the table. And I was on fire that night. I'd been playing a decent amount of pool but I just ran through the entire list of dudes. The vibe started to get a little sketchy at some point and one dude offered to bet me, which I never do. I beat him and decided I'd had enough Canal bar fun and would finish the walk home. As I was departing a crew of my former opponents had assembled outside and gave me some good razzing which, wasn't what I was expecting. After some social finesse I was able to to walk down Carroll and haven't been back since. Everyone was nice enough but it had a Glory Social Club vibe that I wasn't feeling.
