We decided to go to Great Waves on Labor Day, and damn it was packed! One of the first things I noticed was that the entire place is covered in astro turf where there isn't water. I guess it's better than cement, but it really sucks compared to actual grass like some of the other parks have. There also seemed to be a real shortage of chairs to lay/sit in, but luckily we were able to find a pair after about 10 minutes.
I was expecting the park to be a little bigger, but compared to some of the other VA "water parks" there is still a good bit more to do for your money. $15 gets you all day access to the water park and the miniature golf, plus one round in the batting cages. We decided to pass on the golf and baseball, and just stuck to the water stuff, since it was a pretty blisteringly hot day.
The water park itself consists of one huge pool that has a wave machine which comes on for about 10 minutes at a time, then off for another 10. There are inflatable tubes you can rent for $4 each for the day if you want to float out in the deep end. I recommend this if you're wanting to get in the pool, as the shallow parts are completely full of kids, and the deeper parts to stand (5-6 feet) are full of idiot adults on tubes who can't manage to not constantly bump into you while you stand/float. The demographic here is also very different from the pools in other parts of Virginia, so don't be surprised by some of the stuff you see. There are 3 big water slides, 1 of which is closed in and much faster than the other 2 and has its own separate line. The lifeguards have to wait for all 3 tubes to clear each time though, so it can take quite a while to move through the fast tube line, since that's the one most people want to go on. Towards the back there are also 2 racing slides, which are pretty short and had basically no line all day. If you look around enough you'll find a cool little waterfall area attached to the kiddie pool. Nicole and I found our way over to it and hung out under the waterfall for a good 15 minutes, just relaxing and letting the water massage us while hiding in the cave.
We couldn't resist the smell of the fries, so we ended up getting a large "bucket" of them, with some chili & cheese and a Coke, because we're so cliche for summer. The fries were actually really good, with a heavy dose of Old Bay sprinkled on, and they give you the chili & cheese in separate containers, so you can dip as much or little as you like, instead of scraping bits from fry to fry. It was the perfect accompaniment to a hot day at the pool. There's a lot more food here (even a Dipping Dots cart), and the funnel cakes with strawberries and whipped cream seemed to be really popular. I also saw a few people get sandwiches and they were pretty huge, and reasonably priced. Overall it was a great day, and I got to see my incredibly sexy woman in a bikini the entire time, which is worth a star itself.

good place to bring the kids. they got a wave pool and some waterslides. wouldn't recommend the food there way overpriced for crappy burgers and hot dogs. if you can, pack a cooler in the car. that would save you $10-15 a person for food.
We went on friday to the grand opening of there grilling area!!! Free entrance to the park and hot dogs for 75 cent!!!! Ok the pool was not as crowded I went with the kids so stayed in 3 ft and under!!! I have been coming here since I was young and this year by far has been the best!!! Thank you economy!!! The water tubes are now free they have plenty there I would say if it was a saturday they might run out still so much better then before. They opened a new area where they grill hot dogs and hamburgers and chips(don't worry they still have the reguluar high priced food) . For our family we spent under $10 dollars for all of us to eat and drink !!! They also sale dominoes pizza there!!! The lines for the slides were not bad I am affraid of heights and the walk up was terrible for me with my 9 year old telling me we would be ok not much more to go. Sad to say this happens everytime!!! They said the prices would go up on the grilling area though it will still be afforadble not $4 dollars like Six Flags!! I love the park and will go again and again!!!!
Went with a 1.5, 3, and 5 year old on July 4th and would definitely go again. The kids really enjoyed the slides, wave pool, and splash area, and my toddler liked playing in the sandbox. There's enough to entertain the kids without it being too big. I went down the adult water slides and if I didn't have to keep an eye on the little ones, I would have gone more. The admission price seemed reasonable ($15 for adults). We also packed a lunch and had a picnic outside the park since no outside food/drink was allowed. They were pretty hardcore about the bag search. Can't really comment on the locker rooms since we showered at home. Wish the lifeguards were more uniform in their training. Some were really strict and some were lax. With that many kids around, they really should err on the side of cracking the whip and preventing a bum rush of kids fighting to go down a water slide at the same time.
