Review from Maria M.

After a couple of months of research on a new digital point-and-shoot, I decided to get a Fuji Finepix Z20FD. I was set to order the camera and a memory card on Amazon, and with shipping, it was going to cost me around $250+.
Since my virtue is impatience, I wanted to get my camera ASAP, so I looked up Camera Land on Yelp. Decent starrage, near my work....that's the one! I called to see if they had the model I wanted, and Mark agreed to hold the last Z20FD for me. I went to pick it up the next day, and as promised, it was waiting for me behind the counter.
But I still had questions. What about the battery life? Does it really perform that well in low light? Will I be able to take good pictures of my friends in bars and whatnot? Is the software compatible with my Mac? What about the memory card???? All these questions were answered for me in a refreshingly non-attitudinal way. As for the memory card, they said I did not need the high speed, but they were out of the regular, so they gave me the high speed for the regular's price, which they did not have to do at all. The camera cost $129.99, about $70 less than what they were charging at Amazon. All in all, I paid about $100 less than I would have at Amazon, and now I don't have to wait for the camera and the card to arrive in their separate shipments (!) from different merchants (because now Amazon has minions, apparently).
The camera is lovely. It's teeny, it's black (although I kinda wanted the hot pink), it does take good pictures in low light, the battery life is great so far (it was on last night for 2 hours straight as I played with it), the software worked fine and the camera has a bunch of cool features to explore. I like new toys. I also like being in and out of a store in less than 15 minutes when I have make an important purchase. This is why I do a lot of research on the product beforehand, so I don't have to waste time later.
And I could have easily have gone to B&H. But something tells me that place would have made me crazy. I don't like big establishments with numbered counters and "procedures" for the checkout. Keep it simple and I'm happy. Camera Land is not a big store, but they have a pretty good selection of cameras. They also do developing and framing. There's some nice accessories too. Again, I was pleasantly surprised at the price they gave me for my Fuji. I'll definitely be back!Listed in: The Office

not exactly the warm and fuzzy type of staff....their best asset is their location.....

Thus far I have been unimpressed by the quality and service at Cameraland. Service is friendly enough, but not so sharp or helpful. A couple of times they have sold me the incorrect product and my print orders have never been ready on time. Aside from that the print quality is not what it should be for the price. You can get the same or slightly better quality prints from a generic pharmacy printshop for a lot less and for the same price you can get much better quality and service from another professional photo shop.

1.5 stars...
With nonsensical statements like "[Camera Land] started out in 1957 as a small local photo shop has grown into one of the oldest..." and "The difference between them and us is us" right down to blatant lies like "not just handing a box over the counter, the way most of our competitors do" it's no wonder one of NYC's oldest camera stores is still a tiny store while a place like B&H (which started out in 1973) has grown into the world's largest photo store with 70,000sq feet of retail space and over 2,0000 employees assisting customers worldwide.
I went to Camera Land on a Friday afternoon because of a sale they put in AM NY. The parts of the sale that interested me was buy one get one Pioneer photo albums, and a big discount on on-camera LED lights from Promaster. Because they aren't an orthodox Jewish store they are actually open on Friday afternoons past 2pm which is a big plus. The first problem I had was that I had to wait a long time to get helped (or even acknowledged), as their tiny staff (of 5 or so people) were all busy (even though the store was practically empty). I checked Camera Land's website for the price for the album I wanted, the site said it was $14. Well in the store the price was $20 and there wasn't anything I could do about it. In terms of the LED lights, I wanted to check them out and see how bright they were and how well they were built. They didn't have any on display and not only did the salesman not offer to describe anything about the light but he wouldn't allow me to open the package to check it out. I was pretty surprised because 1) they claim to do more than "just hand over a box" in their mantra 2) the light was in an easy to open cardboard box, not a sealed blister pack and 3) the largest of the lights only had one left (the salesman originally told me this one was sold out) and it was in a crushed box so it didn't seem like opening it up and checking it out would be an issue. Needless to say I didn't argue, I just didn't give them my business for the light but I still bought the albums.
I might go by there in the future only if 1) It was a time I desperately needed something during a time B&H or Adorama was closed 2) I was in right by the store and didn't want to travel to Calumet (which is also open Friday and Saturdays). Otherwise I'd definitely skip this place. Despite what some may think, a smaller store doesn't equal better service, more hands on, or better prices.
Big side note: I should also point out something that nearly every big retail store (especially camera stores) are doing now-a-days to gain big profits. I don't discount any part of my rating for this but it's something normal consumers should be made aware of. Stores are now getting cheap Chinese labor to rip off designs of higher quality products and slapping a made up brand name (to disassociate themselves from the product) on the product to make it seem legit. The products cost pennies on the dollar to produce/buy and are sold for huge profits. This is the same premise as buying a 99 cent cheeseburger at McDonalds rather than a quality organic hamburger for $10 elsewhere. It's great for people who want more bang for their buck but just be aware of what's going on. More and more stores are realizing how profitable this is and are stocking (and displaying) less and less well-known products in order to push theirs. Camera Land has "Promaster", Adorama has "FlashPoint", Calumet actually calls theirs "Calumet", B&H has "Impact" and "Pearstone". Most of the time the smaller products are acceptable. Luckily they have yet to manage to do this with cameras but there are some bigger ticket items that one should be more weary of. I'm not saying this new 21st century business model is neccessarily bad I just wanted to put out the agenda so those who aren't aware of it, will be. -

Ok storefront, and they often have what you are looking for. But whenever there are problems and you need to return or exchange something, they have an excuse to not accept it back, even if its the next day.
Recently i purchased over $1000.00 there, and needed to return a charger that doesn't work. They told me they dont accept returns on chargers. Apparantly its ok to sell something that is broken.
Back to B&H for me.Comment from Joel P. of Camera Land 7/20/2011

I am taking away stars for the simple fact that last week I received my photos in 24 hours, but now a week later, the same lady is telling me it takes 2 days to develop my film (and I didnt like her tone of voice on the phone). Its just a roll of film!!! Now I possibly won't have all of my shots for my photography class today. Thanks Cameraland, I definitely will not be coming back if I need my photos in less than 2 days.

Camera Land excels in the area where most other camera stores in the area fall short: customer service. Their prices are not great (pretty much full retail,) but if you want advice, you can actually get it here, which is something you can't get at a lot of other camera stores in the area. This is why I'd go to a retail store in the first place, instead of ordering online. I could ask a dumb question like, "what's available in Pentax-compatible zoom or telephoto lenses, and how much do they cost?" here, and not be answered with contempt and a curt "we're out of that." This same question got me absolutely nowhere at B&H. The prices at Camera Land aren't great, and the inventory doesn't seem to be huge, but you can ask a question here and actually get an answer, and that counts for a lot.

Say cheese! If you're into photography or jus want to learn camera land is good place to start. They carry name brands such as nikon and olympus. They also sell digital cameras. Not sure about warranties. You'll have to ask a salesperson. Still the prices are not too bad. They often give you discounts.

I bought a digital camera here and was very happy with it. The service is more personal than what you would find in a larger chain electronics store and I was also able to get him to lower the price a pretty decent amount. I bought it about two years ago and only had one problem since then. I brought it into the store and they fixed it for me free of charge.

WOW- After reading the comment left by Joel from CameraLand, I am taking away a star. He is flat out lying for apparantly no reason. After I left the review he sent me an e-mail telling me that Yelp reviews are the backbone of his business. I didn't reply because there was no reason to. Now he makes up a story to leave on my review. I went in on Wednesday and they told me it would be ready Friday. I have the slip in my purse right now showing that. I did not ask for it to be ready on Friday- I did not need it on Friday. If they would have said 2-3 days like Joel P. is claiming, I would have been happy to stop by on Monday to pick it up instead. They WERE indeed very rude, and now the fact that he is taking to Yelp and making up stories makes me think a LOT less of their business.
