Oh. Hello...
*Damn. You look good.
You know...I have seen you before.
I didn't know you were open to all
or
at least to me.
*Looked like a certain clientele had you all to their own.
Wait! You're Vietnamese?
I know the last name, should of told me
right away...
But I didn't really pay attention. I was looking,
somewhere else.
Not at the sign.
anyways...
I'm not complaining, I love all varietals.
I just thought you were a combination of everything.
*God damn. I would love to get some of your Bahn Mi.
I have had my meat on a stick before;
but nothing like how you serve it.
*The sweet glaze that you put on the meat is
unlike anything else,
I have ever experienced.
The viscosity, sweetness, with that hint of salt....swoon!!!!!
"Where's your sticky rice?
The rice you have stashed in a
Banana
Leaf?"
It's over here. You like sticky rice? -Cam Huong asks...
YES.
I love Sticky Rice.
Cam Huong is by far the best Vietnamese spot, I have ever had.
I don't eat Vietnamese very often.
Only a handful of times.
But this new one is changing everything.
I hope to be eating Cam Huong, more
and more
and more.
Oh and on a side note:
Their noodles are amazing. I just couldn't figure out
how to
tie
them in. -

Pork sausage sandwich ($2.75) and shrimp spring rolls (3 for $3.25) really yummy.
The other sandwiches, hot deli (noodles, fried rice, veggie stir fry, etc), to-go pre-wrapped items (pork-filled noodles, rice-and-pork plates, etc) and drinks look good too.
Lunch time: line moves quickly. -

Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) ($2.75 - $3.25) - They make it with good baguettes and have a good variety of choices. My favorites are #1 Special combo and the pork chop. Gotta love it, cheap, fresh, and delicious.
They got lots of other hot food too that a lot of people were ordering. But I didn't have room to try it. -
Review from Jennie P.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm to their Nem Nuong sandwiches! It's no "Ba Le" but it's still prettttty good. It's convenient that they're open in the weeee hours of the morning so I can pick up a few items to have for lunch later. There isn't any banh mi places in Castro Valley.. the closest one is Lee's in Hayward and that place is boo boo.
Too bad this place is starting to up their prices! -
Review from Sam T.
Kept calling the location on international but the line was busy for like 2 hours! Decided to just make my order through this location.
Order: 30 Egg Rolls
Results:
a. $20
b. Taste like Cam Huong Egg Rolls
c. Bigger than I'm use to (That's what she said sorry I just had to)
d. Order ready when I arrived
This place is just as popular as the one on international, though I think the one on international is easier to go to because they have free parking.
Food:
Decent food. Not gourmet but for such low prices what do you expect?
Service:
Prompt and straight to the point.
Environment:
Give you a quick meal environment. Not too comfortable to sit in here for long periods of time. Pretty dirty tables.
Price:
I thought the egg rolls were $.60 a piece. $20 for 30 pieces = $.67 a piece. I guess they were bigger....but yeah....did they short change me?
Food: 4
Service: 4
Environment: 2
Price: 5 -

The photo by J.S. is the way I like a bahn mi... overflowing with meat and condiments. I expect it was taken some time ago because the portions have been much less generous on my last several visits to Cam Huong. But with extra credit for its wide range of options (try the beef with onions, a nice change of pace) it's still four stars and my go-to place in Oakland Chinatown.
Even though you'll see cars double parked all over the place, the meter maids and gentlemen are vigilant in this area. I once got a $30 parking ticket while I was parked right out front going inside to get change. A little easier now that you can put your money in the prepay machine and get a slip of paper to put on your dashboard; pay for an extra 10 minutes because even though the nice ladies behind the counter are very efficient the orders tend to be for multiple sandwiches so you're going to be in there awhile. -

My favorite vietnamese sandwich spot ever! And those who goes to china town knows there is one in every single corner! They are fresh inexpensive and so good! I like to take mines home and reheat in the oven. Obviously when I go there I buy alot . Traffic in chinatown is no joke! So you should definitely grab alot and make your drive worth it!

I have been to this place a few times. The line is usually long, but the wait is never bad. I always end up ordering the banh mi #1. It is okay, but the bread is really good and the cold cuts are okay. I think I need to try a different banh mi and may like it much more.

My go to spot for Vietnamese sandwiches in Chinatown with most ranging from $2.50 to $3.00. Slightly more expensive than the other establishments but definitely worth that extra 25 cents. The grilled pork sandwich is my favorite, so good and yet just filling enough for lunch.
They also have small two item combos for $3.50. I usually get the fried rice or pad thai (yes, they have pad thai) with a meat entree. Again, the prices are higher than the other places in Chinatown but the flavor is better here.
The noodle soups here are perfect to order and take home for dinner. The bun bo hue here is bomb. The broth is so flavorful without the pork blood. Ranges from $5.50 to $6.50.
Beware though, the line is almost always out the door during lunch. Plan on waiting 5-10 minutes before you get to grub on your sandwich. -

The vegetarian sandwich was mediocre. bread was hard, dried tofu was flavorless and the veggies were ok. I've had better Vegetarian sandwiches at these small hole-in-the-wall vietnamese shops.
Nothing special for my tastebuds. -
Review from Monica S.
After all the high reviews, I figured Cam Huong was worth a detour into Chinatown on my way to the BART station. The place was indeed easiest identified by the long line snaking out the door at lunchtime, and I'm happy to say that the sandwich was worth the wait.
My pork banh mi was at least 90% as delicious at the ones I gobbled daily in Ho Chi Minh City. The baguette, though crispy and airy, lacked some of the spring and substance I remember, but overall it was a damn satisfying sandwich.
What I enjoyed at least as much was the real-fruit jackfruit smoothie I ordered on an impulse buy. I asked for "no sugar", and the resulting smoothie tasted exactly like a big cup of fresh, ripe jackfruit.
I am still on a quest for a banh mi that matches my memory of Vietnamese food carts, but I suspect there will be more Cam Huong in my future. -
Review from Andy N.
Can you say... LEGENDARY!?
No, it's not Legendary Palace. That place is down the street. But this... THIS PLACE.
Oh man... My memories as a childhood eating banh mi stems from this hole-in-the-wall, and I am so glad I got to eat it once more while I was visiting the Bay Area. It's got all the right signs of an authentic Chinese/Vietnamese hub- roasted animals hanging near the window, Chinese-American fast food lying out for the picking, and limited space to eat in.
But I always come here for the banh mi.
For about $2.50 - $2.75 (cash only), you can get yourself a delicious Vietnamese sandwich that will have Lee's screaming for mercy. I ordered myself a Cha Siu (Roasted BBQ Pork) Banh Mi, since I hadn't tasted roasted bbq pork in a while either. Upon ordering (and you'll need to call out for the lady. It can get busy inside), she'll cut up the meat herself and insert it into a freshly toasted baguette.
She will include all your favorite fixings- carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, and a tasty spread among others. She will then ask if you want jalapenos with your order. Be clear about it. If you can't do spicy, even traces of the jalapeno will send you through the roof!
Absolutely delicious! Don't be intimidated by the gaudiness. They say the ones that look the least appetizing end up being the best, so give it a try if you're in town.
Thank you Mom for always buying us banh mi from here as I was growing up. A tasty baguette and memories from home put together- what could be better than that?
Parking is available on the street, or in the private lot next door.Listed in: East Bay Secrets

Cam Huong's bread are hard as f*ck. I hate eating into bread where it's airy, stiff and hard. When you bite into the bread, big/small crumbs falling everywhere & sharp bread edges sticking out from the sandwich. Eww. Dislike! Not only that, the cold cut sandwich was already pre-made when I order. Not fresh. Yuck! I will not go back to this place. I don't understand why they have good ratings on their sandwiches. Yelpers, u proved me wrong. Sorry, but I prefer Lee's. At least their sandwiches are made fresh daily and it's soft!!
One thing good about Cam's is that they have a variety of hot fast food to go. Who knows how long they've been sitting. And it's cheap. Quick fast service. -

This is the spot in downtown Oakland for a Vietnamese sandwich. Very generously portioned and super inexpensive. The pork and chicken are my favorites.

The first time I visited, some middle-aged artsy farts were loudly complaining about the cleanliness:
"I mean, I love this place, but it's always so dirty! Look! I almost slipped! Excuse me ma'am, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen."
Until that moment, I hadn't noticed the dirt. But, yes, I suppose it was dirty. I guess it's kind of difficult for me to notice the dirt when there's a menu full of 20 VIETNAMESE SANDWICHES MOST OF WHICH I HAVE NEVER TRIED BEFORE AND ALMOST ALL OF WHICH ARE $3 OR UNDER!!
Ahem... excuse me.
The menu also includes many non-banh mi items, such as bubble tea, avocado smoothies, frog eye (basil seed) drinks, fried rice, fried noodles and various other sweets and savories, all of which are cheap, all of which look delicious. I guess I don't much notice the "ambience" or the "grumpy staff" when I AM SURROUNDED BY ADVENTURE WHEREVER I LOOK!!
Ahem.
I am so happy that Cam Huong is a quick bike ride from my apartment. I will potentially be here multiple times a week and it will still probably take me most of the year to work my way through their offerings. Thus far I've tried the BBQ Pork and Shredded Pork with Anchovy sauce (a cold pork sandwich! refreshing!) both recommended. Oh and get the basil seed drink and the avocado smoothie too. -

I am the envy of all my Oakland-born friends... Why, you may ask? Because I live in Oakland Chinatown and UBER close to Cam Huong! If you've never had the pleasure of eating a Vietnamese sandwich, you MUST visit this gem of an establishment!
I've had about 5 of their like 20 sandwich options and each one has been enjoyable. Of course, the fan fave is the grilled pork (#9) but I'm also a fan of the simple #1, which is kind of like their version of Subway's Cold Cut Combo, but of course... WAY better lol. And talk about the prices... HOLY BEJESUS! Someone call the cops because I'm making out of Cam Huong like a bandit! Talk about a steal--a sandwich plus a small container of chow fun or fried rice for a little less than $5? This has gotta be a crime!
Aside from their delicious banh mi sandwiches **mmm, that crusty, chewy bread**... I'm a big fan of their fried rice, which incorporates Chinese dried/preserved sausage (a childhood fave), and their chow fun (the wide rice noodles). But a little warning--although their fried rice is off the chains, bomb-dot-com delicious, it definitely has quite a bit of salt to it. You'll definitely feel it 30-45 min later.
If you come in during the lunch/dinner rush, don't be surprised by the wait time. But I assure you, the wait is SO worth it. Patience is a virtue, right? The ladies that work here may not be THE friendliest but they will get you your food as soon as they can crank it out. I really like the bosslady--I'm amazed by how she is fluent in Cantonese and Vietnamese but then again... it's Chinatown! And of course, since it's Chinatown, don't forget to hit up an ATM before you get here! I swear the only reason I carry cash in my wallet is because of Cam Huong :)Listed in: Good Eats in The Bay

I had their combination Vietnamese sandwich which was okay . It kind of lacked flavor but it was nice how the bread wasn't really hard to bite into . This place also sells pre-made rice plates , spring rolls , and stuff like that . They also sell hot food . Their hot food selection doesn't look too bad ... will probably be back to try some of their hot food next time . This is definitely a good place to go if you're looking for a quick lunch .

This ain't no PF Chang... so get on down the road! (*sarcastic tone!)
I consider PF Chang generic, american style Chinese food...
I love Cam Huong! I've been coming here since I was a little girl!
Great sandwiches and AFFORDABLE pricing! You can still get a good meal for $5 (Chicken Sandwich and a Snapple!)

THE FIRST Vietnamese sandwich I have EVER had, and to be honest NOBODY can match their standards. I have gone to 6 or more other places and nope.
It sure is a diamond in the rough, but if you find a line out a door, in the middle of Chinatown, at noon, on Webster street, then yes, you have found it, congratulations.
There is always plenty of freshly wrapped food to go, hot food being replaced, and always plenty of sandwiches. -
Review from Keilin H.
I'll be the first to admit that I've paid the kid's price to save money. Any way to save money is good in my book!
With that said, I absolutely LOVE how inexpensive this place is! My friend works in Oakland and she was telling me how she likes coming here because the banh mi is so cheap! Unfortunately, that's where the awesome-ness ends.
I got the grilled chicken banh mi and it was just alright. IT WAS ONLY $2.75!!!! TWO dollars and SEVENTY-FIVE CENTS!! BUT it was way too much bread to filling ratio and I felt like they really skimped on the meat. I got a piece of chicken SKIN with just a few chunks of chicken. The bread is SUPER crumbly too. I'm all for the crumbly crust/soft inside, but this was too much!
I must say that a few of the sandwiches did intrigue me (sardines?! curry chicken?!), so I guess it wouldn't hurt to see how those are. My friend said their food isn't too bad so I might come back for that too.
I'm probably just spoiled because there are cheap, more delicious banh mi places in San Francisco. So 2 stars for the banh mi, but I added the extra one for the super saving price! -

So I had it all planned out. I was going to go get a bbq pork sandwich with a taro parfait thing and eat half of each and save the rest for later.
yeah right. this is 10 minutes later and they're both gone. poof. into thin air i swear.
but seriously less than 5 bucks for what could span into two meals for someone who isn't apparently a total beast is a great deal. the bread is flakey but soft on the inside and the meat is nice and fatty, which is just how i like it. i wish i lived upstairs from this place. -

BEST BANH MI BY FAR!!!
I can't believe I never tried this place until now. The Banh Mi was so delicious and AWESOME! All the veggies and bread were so fresh. I ordered the #1, combo meat with pate and let me tell you they do not skimp out on ANY of the veggies or meats. They give you so much that when you bite into the sandwich some of the veggies even spill out. And for the price you pay for the Banh Mi, it cannot be beaten. For $2.50, you get a decently sized sandwich with all the fixings of a Vietnamese Sandwich. This is my new go to place for a cheap and filling lunch. They have other hot dishes you can order too like a Panda Express type thing, which I'll have to try next time. If you come around the noon time lunch rush, there's a small line but nothing that no one can't handle. Make sure you have some cash though as this is another cash only place in Oakland's Chinatown. -

This is the tastiest vietnamese sandwich shop in all of Oakland. I've eaten at various sandwich shops and their sandwiches beat out all their competition. From the outside looking in, this is your typical hole in the wall shop. Sandwiches are made fresh to order (like always), and I don't know what they put in it to make it taste good, but there's something special that makes it taste superior to other viet sandwich places.
They also have pho and other snacks and desserts, but those are sub-par from what I've heard. -

Oakland, CA
These sandwiches have been a staple to kids and teens in the Chinatown neighborhood for decades. I'm glad they're still doing what they're doing and selling them at a reasonable price: $2.50 to $3.50 per sandwich. I usually go for the chicken or grilled pork, but once in awhile the pork combo is good too. There's always a line, because for the price, it's a steal. Go to the back for a nice grass jelly drink, or cold soy milk. They're Vietnamese coffee isn't bad neither.
Go in there ordering in English, Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Mandarin - they'll always answer.Listed in: Cheap Eats 2011

Come pick up lunch every Saturday here. The staff are friendly and remember faces, if you're a regular. It gets pretty hectic during lunch time, so best idea to call in to go orders! You can ask for specifics and they usually make it fresh. So when you get there, you skip the in lie waiting and such.
Their sandwiches are alright. Ive had better, but one of the best in Chinatown. Crunchy bread, generous portions of pad te, good cuts of meats and loads of veggies!
They only tale cash, so make sure you're loaded! Just kidding, the sandwiches are reasonable prices between 3-4 dollars. -
Review from Uland W.
Specialites are the Vietnamese sandwiches at $2.50-2.75. Trick of the trade, if you decide to eat there; they will toast the bread giving it a extra star being more delicious.
They do offer other items such as chicken legs, noodle dishes (S,M,L), veggies stuffed with different types of meats, and wrapped rice noodles entrees. Good eats for cheap. You can differently walk out of there with 4-8 items and it won't cost you more than $20.
The downside: Is PARKING! It's only street parking and giving that this place is located in the heart of Chinatown, just trying to stop by can be a adventure. Always bring a friend that can roll around the block once or twice OR cross your fingers and double park. Not suggested, just a thought. (parking tickets at your own risk)
At times this place can be packed and depending on how many people are working the counter and time of day your wait time are vary from 1-2 minutes to 5-10 minutes.
I read comments from yelpers like the Mayo is applied too thick for their taste. And I say, treat this place like B.K and tell them that you would like light Mayo, just like you tell them you don't want the hot peppers. Problem solved! Easy!
They also cater, you can order a pan of egg rolls or a pan of rice/noodles but do it the day before! -
Review from Jen M.
The best damn bargain to-go meal in the whole Bay Area. My favorite banh mi so far. Oh, fresh bread baked down the street, instead of that stale crap you cut the roof of your mouth on in San Francisco!
(Note: I tend to pick up sandwiches from any Viet place early, like noon at the latest. Maybe these sandwiches suck at 2pm. Or the people giving Cam Huong 1 or 2 stars are smoking crack. Or Cam Huong gives me better sandwiches because I'm such a hottie. Yeah, it must be that last one.)
I've had 17 of the 20 sandwiches at this point. I want to know how much eating-out money I've saved in the past year by hauling these bad boys into bars, to beer festivals, onto airplanes, etc.
The Vietnamese ladies are always nice, and the younger bilingual guy is a champ.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Bay Area
The 4-star rating is for the steam table food along with the customer service. I had the pad thai which from my past experiences, they were meh. But this one was quite good and for $1.75 for a small box, it was filling indeed. I love how neat and organized the menu is on the wall where you can actually read it clearly!.
I also had their sandwiches. They're alright maybe because I've been spoiled by Saigon Sandwiches. But at around $2.75 for a BBQ sandwich, the price is seriously unheard of in San Francisco these days.
Like all the other reviews said, parking is quite difficult. Good luck with that. -

I'm on Jury Duty and I return from lunch with another Juror after eating Bahn Mi at Cam Huong. The other Jurors are in our Jury assembly room complaining how there are no good lunch spots around the Court house. to go ? Which made me laugh . One of the Jurors asked me where did you guys go ? I told them about Cam Huong and their $2.75 Bahn Mi - Vietnamese Sammichs . The reaction from all the Jurors cracked me up ! They requested that I lead them to said Sammich shop which happens to be the Mecca for Vietnamese Sammichs in Oakland Chinatown.
I of course said sure. So the next day I had an entourage of 15 other Jurors walking with me from the Court house to Chinatown. When we arrived they were overwhelmed by all the Cooked Goods in the window. They asked me whats was recommended . I of course said the Bahn Mi which you can get with your choice of meat for $2.75. Many of them went with the Bahn Mi and some went with the Combo plates for $5.50 . They all were amazed at the quality of food that they got and the cost. We took over all the tables in the back of Cam Huong and devoured our purchases. My fellow jurors were very quiet while they were nomming on their food.
One of my fellow Jurors asked me for a tour of Chinatown which I gave her. When we got back to the Courthouse the other jurors had asked where we disappeared too? She told them about the tour I gave her and they asked that I take them on a similar tour the next day. I asked them how they liked Cam Huong and they all gave it a Thumbs Up. Looks like I have a Jury Duty Lunch Club LOL.Listed in: Asian food, Cheap Eats, Oakland Joints, BBQ, PHO

Visited my friend at the Superior Courthouse and she recommended this place as the 'Best Sandwich in Oakland Chinatown'. It turned out to be a great deal and I even got some munchies for after my trek on BART later that day.
We both had the grilled pork which is my favorite at any Vietnamese Sandwich joint. The nice ladies who worked here were very friendly and welcoming considering the were a little busy. This place is pretty small so it's ideal for a lunch on the go rather than dine-in.
Vietnamese Sandwiches are really one of those cheap, simple pleasures in life that light up your lunchtime without hurting your pocket :) -

THE perfect banh mi bread......and yes it matters. Good ratio of pickled veggies, fresh veggies, meat and herbs, and great prices. What a Banh Mi should be basically. I have only tried the grilled pork but look forward to testing every kind. Especially at less than $3.00!
Thank you Cam Huong Cafe for reintroducing me to my great love affair with Banh Mi! You will be seeing a lot of me. -

the perfect lunch at an unbelievable price with a coke for $1.00 making lunch only $6.50!
Parking can be difficult at lunch - but the prices are worth it. -

I am so glad that there is a comparable pho place on this side of the bay. After my tenure in the Tenderloin, I thought I'd have to take my pho with some crack whores, pimps and urine on the ground.
There's plenty of urine on the ground in Oakland.
I used to like the shrimp rolls here. Before my nut allergy manifested itself. I now like the dac biet in all manners. I share it with my mother. The soup is salty and delicious, I get such a MSG coma afterwards. It's like the best date-rape drug. Just pour a serving or two of this broth down my throat, I am like putty in your massively hairy and capable paws.
When the day comes, I will enjoy trying all the little weird viet street food wrapped in toxic styrofoam. I have tried the other steam foods in the metal trays. All delicious.
Again, nothing says untraceable date-rape compliance like MSG and a big bowl of carbs.Listed in: Against the Grain, Insomnia Cure (aka MSG)

Compared the banh mi here with that of BC Deli...sorry to say, but I think BC Deli wins for content of the banh mi and freshness of bread. Cam Huong is still good though. I've had some of their other foods like pad thai and chow mein, which are pretty decent.

Yummy Banh Mi sandwiches. They range from BBQ pork, to BBQ chicken, to mixed meats, and Vietnamese ham. The service counter person is super friendly and speaks English. The french bread on the Banh Mi is very yummy.
They also sell Vietnamese ham, sausage, and to-go spring rolls. Like other places around this shop, they also have the typical lo mien and stir fries. Overall, it's a decent place for Banh Mi and snacks. -
Review from Ed V.
So you're hungry, it's Saturday and you live or work in Downtown Oakland. Sure, there are hip new places to pick up lunch, but give Chinatown's tiny Cam Huong deli a go for the tastiest- ever bahn mi. That's a Vietnamese sandwich for the uninitiated (although the Vietnamese think of them as French sandwiches).
The price is right - a steal - freakin $2.75. Like a Cuban or a hero, bahn mi is a bread-and-meat concoction with lots of fixings, just what a sandwich should be.
The foundation of the Cam Huong bahn mi is it's crunchy French bread from the nearby Cam Huong bakery just up the street. but that's not all. Deft sandwich makers load those day-fresh loafs with young cilantro, hot jalapenos, sweet mayo, an abundance of high-quality meat, pickled carrots, and daikon. and then wrap up the creation in butcher paper for easy carry away.
I'm fond of the #9 - grilled pork, although there are more than a dozen to choose from. Or even better, work through the list systemically from start to finish and see what really rings your bell.
One of the Best Sandwich Value in the East Bay fo sho! -

More like 2.5.
Cardinal sin of a banh mi joint was committed here... come here to pick up a quick lunch from work, and order a Banh Mi, thinking I would get it fresh and made to order. I order a Banh Mi Thit Nguoi and immediately get handed a PREMADE sandwich!!! NOT toasted, not fresh, limp pickled veggies, and really, just not a good portion of meat or anything. I must have the wrong Cam Huong b/c there's a few of them when I search.
I also bought a rice plate for home, with cha and ga nuong. Both were lackluster, chicken ho hum. And the nuoc mam, no flavor, just plain salty. These must be whities thinking just b/c they're in Chinatown, must be authentic and tasty.
I'll take Banh Mi Ba Le over this anyday. Although I will be nice and try the other Cam Huong location to be fair.
Someone please tell me if this is the right place that got 4 stars?????
