Never would've known about this spot if it weren't for my fellow Yelpers. And YES, it lives up to the hype!

Devoured my Roast Beef Po-Boy with gravy, and my girlfriend ate my sweet potato fries saying "best fries ever." And she's picky! She also loved her craw fish po-boy and gumbo.

We missed the craw fish by 30 minutes, so when they say their out, they're OUT! Never the less, the service here was GREAT. Our server was very attentive and made us feel at home. And that means a lot to a brotha like me, so I'm officially a Calliope Po-boy cheerleader!

BAM! ZAP! POW! (boy)

It felt like the Joker drop kicked me in the mouth after taking my first bite of Calliope's sandwich.

Almost a year from today I have been writing reviews on yelp.  One of my first bookmarks was Calliopes, 7 months later I finally made my way to it.  800 Reviews later and here I am.  They finally have their website up and running and they don't close until 10 pm on the weekdays and 3 AM on the weekends.

WOW, am I glad I finally made my way here.  This place is freaking ridiculously good.  I must be calm, I will try my best to resist or else 2010 will be very fat year.

As I entered I was greeted politely by the owner, Lisa.  After sitting down and reading over the menu I saw that they offer 1/2 and 1/2 at no extra charge.  I decided to get the large with half roast beef and half fried crawfish with a side of sweet potato fries.

So the large sandwich is cut up into 4 pieces so you get 2 of each type.  First off the roast beef with gravy is money.  The gravy just oozes out and makes spectacular.  I enjoyed the breading on the fried crawfish but after having such a juicy roast beef it was a bit dry for me.  Next time I'll try their special surf and turf since it has both the fried seafood and the roast beef.

Now onto the sweet potato fries.  I love sweet potato fries but so very few places offer it and even if they do they don't always present it correctly.  Calliope's succeeds at doing both.  They not only have it on the menu but serve it with honey drizzled across it.  I even accidentally dripped so gravy on top and it made it even better.

BBs is good, but this place is amazing.  Great food with amazing service, you can really feel the southern hospitality here.  The food comes out fast, but yet still stays fresh.

They also offer a challenge.  If you can eat the Surf and Turf XL (36 inches) in under a hour without taking a bathroom break they will pay for it.

I will be back I will face it.

Calliope's is a great addition to EaDo. The po-boys here are good.  Try the surf and turf with fried shrimp and roast beef.  Strange combination but i like the savoriness of the brown gravy with the crunch of fried shrimp. I'm a big fan of their gumbo (even though it's made with a very light roux) and fried chicken wings.

Great food after a night of drinking especially after a show at Warehouse Live which is just a few blocks away.  They're open until 3AM on weekends.  I hope they get a bigger late night clientele b/c it would be a shame if they decided to discontinue the longer hours for lack of business.

Fried rice should be skipped.  Fries with gravy and cheese too.

Your cardiologist may dissapprove of it, but your tastebuds will have you singing in praise of this place. The surf and turf po-boy lives up to the hype, in all it's roast beef with gravy and crispy fried shrimp glory. All po-boys come fully dressed, meaning with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and mayo. I have to give them mega props for managing to find the perfect french bread to withstand all that - it stayed together with every bite. Everything is made to order, but we didn't mind the slight wait as we chatted with our waitress/owner Lisa. Be sure to pick up a bingo card, to be used for future visits.

Theres very little to add that hasn't already been said about Calliope's (one of few poboy places in Houston, great service, close to downtown, etc.), but here is some bits o' info that some may find helpful:
* they use popcorn shrimp in their po-boys, so you get more fried coating than you do shrimp in each bite
* the bread is some of the crunchier served in Houston but is not traditional po-boy style french bread
* the onion rings aren't anything to rave about -- stick with the fries

I live right down the street from here, and Finally made it in here today to have lunch.

I have to say that the staff working here are some of THE nicest people that I have ever encountered!  Very friendly, polite, helpful, and genuinely concerned about your eating experience.

I ordered the Fried Shrimp Platter ($10.95)  which came with 10 butterflied shrimp, salad, and some VERY tasty french fries.

I liked the shrimp because the batter was light, and you could actually taste the shrimp, not just a big wad of batter.  BUT, I have to say that I truly coveted Rusty B.'s Fried Catfish!!!  NOW, that was some damned good catfish--from the fish itself to the batter on it--DELICIOUS :-D

This place was great!  Simple and fresh(ly) fried food.

I'll give this place five stars because they did exactly what I expected them to do...and then did it with exceptional service...

Sometimes a dude is feeling self destructive and wants a fried platter of bottom-feeders like catfish or shrimp...kinda like the need for eating Tex-Mex when you feel the need to cram 14 pounds of cheese into your body in one sitting. I can only do this fried "seafood" binge once a year at the MOST.

I ordered the fried catfish platter. It comes with fries and a salad. I expected the bed of greasy/soggy fries...that's what seafood joints always serve. What I didn't expect was three huge catfish fillets...the plate was massive. The side salad had pickle slices in it just like a joint I have blurry memories of in Louisiana after a day of drinking...so beware....this place ain't an expensive joint in the 'burbs.

The catfish itself may not have been fresh out of the bayou...tasted like maybe it was frozen...but this place is in (sorta EaDo) downtown Houston...nobody is frying catfish out of Buffalo Bayou. The only times in my life I've had catfish that didn't taste non-fresh like this, IMHO, was when me and friends caught and cooked it on the side of the bayou/river ourselves, and at one or two places on the bayou back in Lousiana.

BUT, the crunchy breading keeps you crunching down on it. It's hard to resist. Not exactly the stuff we used to bread catfish with on the banks, or some of the simple spicy stuff some of the joints on the bayou used to fry up, but it has a crunch that's hard to let go of.

And unless the catfish is fresh out of the water and obscenely awesome, SAUCE takes a HUGE place in the eating experience. Well, here they bring you all the sauces in clean big squirt bottles!!! I thought this scored BIG points! I'm a red sauce dude...and theirs was awesome. I even ate most all of the stereotypical seafood joint/greasy french fries because of the red sauce.

Of course, there's the expected dirty bottles of hot sauce on the table. It's what gives old-chinatown its charm...I'd expect no less. This place is like an old Vietnamese joint that serves Tex-Cajun food...and that's actually what it is. They do it well.

Other than being spot-on as far as what they claim to sell, the service is seriously puts this place over the top. The people that run this place...owners AND managers/service are what I look for in an eating experience. I make plenty of good food at home and don't like it going to waste...I can't afford to eat out often...especially when my food might be way better. So, when owners/managers/employees can make me WANT to come back no matter what I ate...it really means a lot to me. I go some places mostly because I like the staff. This is one of those places.

I can't handle another platter of fried catfish this year, but I want very much to go back this week and try the gumbo or a fried shrimp po-boy...being a registered coonass...it's just too tempting being down the street here in EaDo. It would be cool if they could knock out some boiled shrimp...especially on a po-boy. But I don't think it's going to happen in this area.

Prices are super low.

Service is crazy awesome.

If you want beer or wine, hit Cadillac liquor or the gas station..no cork fees that I know of. But as a beer-drinker, I might suggest just drinking tea...and wearing your "coaches pants". ;)

Just stop in...eat...you'll love the people...then go home happy and swo' and drink beer all day or just sleep on the couch. That's how we roll. :)

The service was great, the prices were on point and the atmosphere was pretty good.
The food lived up to the hype I've read from other reviews.  I had the Surf and Turf Po boy.  That roast beef was so soft and sweet., and i thought it was only going to be a couple of shrimp on there, i was wrong.  They filled it up with shrimp.  And the honey drizzled sweet potato fries were great too.  Although i did like the onion rings better.  Next time I'll have to try the jalapeno hush puppies.  But it is definitely a place i would recommend to a friend.  I think it would be the perfect spot to grab a bite after a game.
The only thing that would make it better would be if they have real spicy hot sauce or pepper sauce.  I love my food as spicy as i can get it.

My favorite thing about Calliope's is not their food (although, their food is really really great, but more on that later).  I loved the fact that it's a family owned restaurant and everything is cooked to order.  No pre-made fried rice here!  When I went, there was a husband / wife team (with kid - who was very well behaved, might I add...).  Once you order, they got to work in preparing your meal.  While it took longer than I expected (a sign is posted about this so you know what to expect), everything came out piping hot and fresh.

Now about their food - Seafood gumbo was amazing. Just the right amount of flavor and I loved the sausage they use in it.  The portions are VERY large.  A cup of gumbo is really the size of a bowl at other restaurants.  I had the surf and turf poboy which you can read all about in other review and my friend had the fried fish platter.  It came with a very generous serving of fried rice and I believe 4 filets.

Will definitely go back.

Facebook Status update:  Dee H jus got a catfish po boy from Calliope's and boy am I full...*burp*

you and 4 others like this....

yea... they give you huge pieces of fish on this... and i will not underestimate the size again.  the service is good, the food is good, but only 3 stars because the soft shell crab Po boy wasn't all I woulda expected. I know i ain't in Maryland anymore where soft shelled crabs are free flowing... but seesh, at least cook it long enuff to get the ice out....but that's maybe what i get for trying to blend a mid-east favorite with the bayou.

I'll be back tho' ... i love the batter they use!

It didn't live up to the hype.  It's one of the problems of having a good Yelp reputation, you expect a place to be "WOW" and when it just ends up being "ok" you are disappointed.

The food is good.  Don't get me wrong.  Nothing wrong with their food, but nothing unusually good.

We took a late lunch and were excited to try Calliope's. We got there and went in to find a kind of sad dining area. There were plastic red table cloths covering the small tables.  A few of the tables were still in need of being cleaned off, so we chose one that just had some crumbs on it.  The hostess/waitress/bus boy (one person for everything) acknowledged the lack of cleanliness of the tables.  We were fine and just wiped the table down ourselves.  I ordered a Diet Coke (they have cans because their fountain machine is Pepsi.. ugh).  We ordered the regular sized catfish poboy and the regular sized soft shelled crab poboy.  We looked at the wall where the poboy sizes are shown.  We thought the 'regular' size would be ok.  How wrong we were!!  Be warned: REGULAR IS HUGE!  I wish the waitress had warned us.  We mentioned to her later that the regular was very large.  She pointed to the wall and then said "well, that just shows the bread and not all the stuff inside, so you have to like double it's size to get an idea of how big it is".  I asked why didn't they just show a real poboy size and she said a lot of people ask that. I ended up only eating 1/2 of my poboy and my husband barely made a dent in his second 1/2.  What a waste. We spent $30 on two poboys, two fries, and one soda.  That's a lot of money. They really need to modify the 'examples' on the wall to be a realistic size of the poboys.

We each ordered fries with our food and they were very good.  The service was good and friendly. The poboys tasted good but nothing special. I had wanted to try the sweet and sour chicken (I know I know... it's a poboy place) but they were out of sweet and sour sauce.

I would go here again, but would definitely get a 'small' poboy.  Trust me, they are huge.  Also, I would hope everything on the menu would be available.

As echoed below--Calliope's is expensive for what it dishes out. I think, however, it's the price to be paid for the only PoBoy shop in town to get PoBoy's right. A PoBoy should contain an aggressive balance of deliciousness and lethality. When walking out of the door at Calliope's one should be ambivalent. "I shouldn't have eaten that, but it was so good!" Dig what I'm saying?

Gravy as an option with my fries had me smitten instantly, but the Calliope's Surf & Turf PoBoy--that was true food love. The PoBoy also had gravy. Lovely, scintillating gravy, but it doesn't end there--slow roast beef and fried shrimp . . . oh sweet cholesterol!

If you are familiar with the old Jenni's that was here--the new ambiance might catch you off guard. It feels like Jenni's was robbed and tagged with Poboy art on the front window. No music, just big brother feeding you news in the corner. A little grim, but the people are really nice and attentive--so a balance is struck.

I suggest checking them out, but fasting before making it over!

Great Oyster Po-boy with a weak Shrimp Po-boy.

I liked the fries with gravy (especially since it came with a free drink =) but it scared my girlfriend.

Its not any cheaper than BB's, but they give you lots of portions.  If both were next door, I'd most likely come here, but as it is I don't go for cajun often cause when it comes to seafood, Po-boy is an oxymoron.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... I've found a place near work with wonderful customer service and what could possibly be the only appropriate use for a sweet potato. I'm worried I might blow up like a balloon.

Sandwiches aside--they're tasty and filling--I gotta say the star of my meal was the sweet potato fries drizzled with honey. A-MA-ZING. I've had sweet potatoes many ways, and I like them plenty. But this? Oh my God, this has got to be the winner of the Academy Award for Best Use of Tuber in a Side Dish.

The prices are a little higher than I would like, but for great service and good food with deity-worthy sides, I'll pay. Plus their frequent customer card is cool. It's bingo! I'll totally play.

A taste of N.O.L.A. right in EaDo.

Hanging around the parking lot for tonight's art opening at Aerosol Warfare Gallery was near torture, as all I could think about was the sweet aroma of Cajun fare fluttering about the air. Alas, when the event was over, I darted next door to Calliope's Poboys.

You can sit down and order from your service or at the register, as I did, for my to-go order. It was a tough call between all of the entrees, but the owner Lisa, helped me out, suggesting many of her faves. I went for the shrimp poboy--fully dressed with mayo, lettuce and tomato--along with an order of their sweet potato fries with a side of honey for dipping. I also got a serving of an off-the-menu item, crawfish ettoufe. Expect that hearty dish on their menu soon!

Also in the coming months, or at least during Lent, their gonna start up their crawfish nights complete with live entertainment.

And you can't beat the service here. Lisa is the face of the restaurant, and this young, hot mama is all smiles and incredibly thankful for all her loyal customers. Be sure to check out their customer rewards card, which is a fun Bingo card that you stamp out if you, say order a shrimp poboy, bring a friend, etc. As you stamp out boxes, you can win up to five items per card! I've got mine safely tucked in my wallet and am gonna start working on my wins ASAP.

The roast beef po-boy was sloppy and very good, although not as spicy as the roast beef po-boy at BB's on Montrose and Westheimer.  Also, the sweet potato fries were crispy and had a great flavor.

I went back Saturday afternoon for lunch. This time, I took my New Orleans bestie along. I ordered a regular po boy half shrimp & half oyster.  I also ordered the sweet potato fries, drizzled in honey! Super Yum! The place had a nice crowd, I think more people are catching on to this wonderful place.
My critical New Orleans friend was highly pleased with his softshell crab & oyster poboy.  He also had the fries with gravy & cheese. That was such a great treat!
I was happy that he really did like the poboy, he also said the bread was true authentic New Orleans french bread.  He even took a pic of this food an put it on his Facebook page, the caption read "Handz down the best Po Boy in Houston... If you in the area you gotta check out Calliope Po Boys!!!"

This is the first time he has agreed with me on good food not made or found in New Orleans.  I will always give him the big "I told you so" when it comes to how great Calliopes poboys are.

One cool thing is they have quotes of all of the customer's reviews on the to go menus, and yes, a snippet of my Yelp review is there! I was stoked to know that they appreciate the feedback from the customers.  The owner was even kind enough to come to our table and get our feedback.  She was very friendly and we even found out that the bread is made and distributed by the owners.  So if you are ever looking for fresh french bread, you can call up and order some for yourself.  Pass that along!

Please, if you havent gone, go now and order poboys! They are so good!

Boy and I stopped here for lunch sometime last week.  As he's a resident of the Durty Durty East Siiiide, we LOVED the fact that Jenni's (traiiitorrrs!!!  *shakes fist*) was on this side of the Warehouse District and easily accessible.  So when a new restaurant opened up in their old space, it was a no-brainer that we had to check it out.

Midweek lunch wasn't busy at all, a definite change from Jenni's during their heyday.  The staff was SUPER nice, though they were suffering from the Pappas model of "order at the counter, then get waitstaff for the rest of your visit, thereby creating this weird 'should I tip? should I not?' dynamic".  Both of us ordered a lunch special which came with fried shrimp, french fries and a salad (not fried, fyi).  The food came out in good time, which is a good thing, since we were both STARVING, so we dug in hungrily.

As someone else has mentioned, the salad is kind of a joke.  I often wonder why restaurants even bother to serve these abominations: limp, translucent iceberg lettuce with some token sliced tomatoes thrown on top, with the addition of two pickles (???) in Calliope's case.  Do people actually EAT this stuff?  Well, yes.  Boyfriend vacuumed it up because he's a human garbage disposal, and I did try some of their honey mustard dressing, which was really tasty.  The shrimp came out HOT and I had to give it a few minutes to cool down.  It was good...I mean, it's fried shrimp, it's pretty hard to mess up.  I finished up my meal completely stuffed and left a goodly portion unfinished (which Boy dutifully disposed of--it's nice having him around).

There were also condiments galore available--cocktail sauce for the shrimp, ketchup for the fries, and various hot sauces for the Boy to scatter everywhere to sate his ridiculously odd palate.  And like I said, the staff was super sweet.  I saw several people in and out picking up to-go orders, and they displayed the same courtesy towards those customers as well.

I wasn't wowed but I wasn't repulsed either, and that may have something to do with what I ordered, which was pretty simple.  I'm going to have to stop in for one of their po-boys sometime soon and give it a fair appraisal.  Besides, they deliver within a certain mile radius (Boy's apartment included!!!) so it's highly likely I'll be back for round 2.

I wish I had checked it out sooner...  I've been eyeballing this place since I moved back to Houston.  Having just recently moved from the Medical Center to Midtown, it seemed like it was time.  I'm literally 1 mile from this place.  I cannot tell you how nice the family is that runs this place.  So accomodating.

Getting to the food, their po-boys don't disappoint.  I went with the shrimp which is pretty standard fare, but having tried that I will return for some of the others.  Softshell crab peeks my interest for sure, and who doesn't like a good oyster po-boy.  While dining one member of our party opted to try the red beans and rice, even though he had already had dinner that night.  He was really just there to drink some beer with us, but was swayed upon seeing the menu.  Beer by the way, BYOB which is awesome.  When I called to ask the owner was more than enthusased about it actually. Always good to know. Anyways, back to the red beans and rice, my buddy said it was the best he'd ever had, and another guy in the restaraunt, whom we were talking to off and on said it tasted like his mothers, to which he laughed, and said isn't a bad thing.  He had a very thick Louisanna draw to him, so I assume he knows what's up.

He did seem disappointed they hadn't saved him any Ettoufee, which apparently is an off menu item, but he highly recommended it.

Other people have mentioned their frequent customer card, which is a great idea.  I'm sure we'll fill that puppy up in no time.

All in all if you need a po-boy or some sort of Lousianna fix, this is your place.

I went back recently and got a catfish po-boy. It was slammin'! This makes me believe their po-boys will be consistently good.

I also bumped it up to 5-stars because they offer prawn, or shrimp chips--the kind that you have to deep fry yourself, not pre-made in a bag.  This was a favorite childhood snack of mine, so thank you Calliope, for my Southeast Asian madeleine.

I saw this new po boy shop open one day as I visited my friends @ Aerosol Warfare next door. It was around lunchtime on a Saturday, so I decided to stop in.

Wow! I'm glad I did! I ordered a basket of fried shrimp and fries. The food came out of the kitchen pretty fast (I was one of only 5 people in the restaurant at the time) and hot & spicy!

And the service is awesome! I forget her name, but the beautiful lady at the counter is very friendly. She goes around and checks with everyone making sure they are satisfied with the meal, and she even offers to refill your drink for you!

I went back one day when I heard a crawfish boil was happening. Wow, so awesome! I think I was charged $6.99/lb (and those "pounds" were very generous!), but also had an option for All You Can Eat for only $25. Amazing! The sausage, potatoes, and corn were a little extra, but not much. I even offered to buy more corn and she gave me a few extra on the house!

Def one of my new fav spots in town!

I found a Calliope menu flyer in the bag handed out at the Quince de Mayo Yelp event, so it was destined for me to try their food. Plus I am a sucker for food advertisements.

Today I went there a little after 2PM, it was a little slow. Okay, I was the only one there. I really need to find a lunch buddy...or anybuddy. Eating alone gets really old after a while. The place was really clean since there was nobody there to mess things up. It won't be for long once I get my crumby sandwich and shrimp chips.

I ordered a regular sized softshell crab sandwich with the above mentioned shrimp chips. The sandwich was very good, it was hot and fresh like the chips. My only complaint is that is was little pricey. There are 2 softshell crabs in a regular sized sandwich. I can get 3 crabs, plus 2 sides with a full time waitstaff in California for $15. My total came out to $18 for sandwich, chips and beverage and said beverage was not a beer. If I was eating this in Manhattan, then I would understand. Alas, I am in Houston.

The service was very friendly, like most places in Houston, except for this one place...ahem...cough...Brasil...cough. They even refilled my drink, I didn't even have to ask...yeah they did Brasil guy. This place is more like a 3.5 stars, but it will probably be a 4 after I try out their other sandwiches.

From the ashes of the old Jenni's Noodle House location on Jefferson, Calliope's Po-Boy has risen.

I got the email from Aerosol Warfare that they had a new neighbor (grand opening was earlier this week), so naturally I took a my hungry self down for some take out. I haven't found a po-boy this awesome since Pete's Original closed down several years ago.

I ordered the catfish po-boy, while my compadres opted for shrimp and crawfish. I was really really impressed by the catfish, but stole a bite (okay maybe two or three) of co-worker's crawfish po-boy and nearly fell out of my chair. AMAZING, AMAZING food. This po-boy should be illegal it's so good.

Perusing the menu while we waited, I saw two things I'm definitely trying next time -- Calliope's Surf & Turf poboy, which promises tender slow roast beef with double fried shrimp, and the French fries with gravy and cheese - YES I SAID IT, GRAVY & CHEESE.

Who could ask for more? ME.

Go eat at this place now.

Insider's Tip: Order ahead, each poboy is cooked to order, so you'll be waiting a minute to eat, but it's worth it. Also, If you are in the downtown vicinity, they have a delivery service within a four-mile radius.

Great po-boys served on warm soft French bread. You can get 1/2 & 1/2 po-boys. I had 1/2 oyster and 1/2 soft shell crab. Both were good!

Red beans and rice was tasty, too. Their gumbo while it was tasty, the consistency was soup-like. I still liked it though.

I was literally JUST at Calliope's not more than 10 minutes ago scarfing down on a delicious po-boy, and instead of going back to my spreadsheets, I'm going to tell you how delicious it was.

The place is a no-frills joint in a mini-strip located off Jefferson; blink and you'll miss it. The hole in the wall places are always the best, aren't they? There's a few dingy places to sit, although they look like they're trying to upgrade a bit--the DirecTV guys were in today.

I went with the surf and turf po boy, which is a delightful combination of fried shrimp and roast beef smothered in gravy. Throw a little cocktail sauce and Tabasco, and I'm in sandwich heaven. Yeah, the standard Brown Bags and Quiznos of the world are nice, but if you're looking for a truly delicious sandwich, what you're really wanting is a po boy. Sing it with me, now!

The small sammiches (plenty filling) run from $6/$7 (chicken, shrimp, etc.) all the way to $11 (soft shell crab). Mine was $10, but that includes fries and a drink; not a bad deal at all, sailor. If I'm looking for flaws, the bread is a little hard to chew (which causes a bit of a spillage problem), but that's just nitpicking. They've also got fried shrimp platters, gumbo (which looked delicious), and red beans and rice.

To top it off, there's service with a smile. What's not to like?

I went there full of hope, still missing my beloved New Orleans Po-Boys which closed several years ago.

I ordered the regular softshell crap po-boy because of the good review I read on here, and I asked the waitress if the softshell crab was good today, and she said yes.  Well I have to disagree, it was not very good, pretty tasteless actually.  Not bad, but not particularly good, and for $14 it should have been great.

My friend who ate with me ordered a side salad, and it was lettuce, tomatoes and pickles.  Yes you read correctly pickles on a salad.  It was pathetic.

The onion rings are a pass, but the fries were pretty good.

If you eat here, you would probably do better to order fried shrimp or crawfish.  But I recommend just going to Paulie's on Saturday for their special and getting their fried shrimp po-boy, it is genuinely delicious.

This place is just opening, and they may get better, but unfortunately they probably won't get another chance with me.

Calliope brings a new meaning to Surf and Turf!  Fresh slow roasted beef and the freshest fried gulf shrimp.  Probably one of the best po-boys I've ever had, besides the oyster po-boy from Peter's Po-boy in Hattiesburg, MS.  Service was sincere and prompt.  Will be back soon.

*Do yourself a favor and grab a po-boy and the french fries with cheese and gravy and wash it down with sweet tea!  Tell Lisa I sent you!

In the quest to find a po-boy as good as Mother's in NOLA, we stopped here. Though not quite the majesty that is Mother's, this place is the best we've had in Houston. They do it right with the yummy bread and mayo, and they fry the seafood up right! This also is the place for the best onion rings EVER! Crispy without being overdone, and the onion does not just slide right out and burn your face. SO GOOD.

My wife and I went here for lunch today.  My Oyster Po-boy was excellent, my wife enjoyed her gumbo.  The sweet potato fries were awesome!  The service was great.  I'm bringing my coworkers back here soon.

Try the cajun seasoned french fries.  They were fantastic!  I had the catfish poboy, which was really good, though not outstanding.  Next time I think I'll try the shrimp poboy.  I'm just so glad to have another good poboy option in town!

Ruining my health should be cheaper and more satisfying, I'm sorry but that's just how it is.  The combination of fried food and subs sounded like it couldn't fail but this isn't doing it for me.  I have to say, the fried shrimp po-boy (there I didn't say "sub" this time) is awesome, and the fixings are very fresh and crisp... a generous application of Louisiana hotsauce and it's actually pretty good.  I'm not so into the bread, though, it makes the sandwich more of a burden, and a $10 combo shouldn't skimp on the fries.  I actually recommend the onion rings instead anyway, they're really good.  The fried chicken po-boy was a huge disappointment... the meat was tough and dry, and the batter not crispy at all.  What's the point?  As for sizes, the small combo just about does it, anything bigger gets old before I'm even close to done.   Atmosphere could be brighter but it's ok, and the staff are really great.  Nice touch having ketchup, tartar sauce, and 2 cocktail sauce, AND hot sauce at the tables!

This place makes the best poboys in town! I've been multiple times and taking many people here. Lisa is always glad to see me and the people I have in tow. The shrimp is my favorite and she sure stuffs the sandwich with as many of them as she can manage. Also try the gumbo - excellent IMHO! The combination fried rice is also amazing as are the fish chips. The only downside is that they close at 8pm.

Pretty happy to say that I agree with all the other Yelp reviews on Calliope's Po-Boys. I tried the oyster po-boy and the friend-shrimp po-boy and both reminded me of the po-boys from the old New Orleans corner-sto's. Ordered at the counter and about five minutes later, the po-boys were brought out. The girl behind the counter was polite and sweet, and everyone here made sure we were satisfied with our orders. This place is open pretty late (till 11pm I think), and the take-out menu had something written about delivery (although the price/distance restrictions weren't listed). What I thought was pretty cool was that they had Asian menu items on the menu, like sweet and sour chicken and all that, which made this place really remind me of the ubiquitous corner-stores in New Orleans that sell everything from po-boys to fried chicken to general tso's chicken. All in all, Calliope's is probably one of my new favorite Houston restaurants!
