They were great, and now they are gone. Store has been empty for a couple of months now with "clean sweep" sale signs still in the window. Phone just beeps when you call.
I haven't been able to find any mention or explanation for the closing, but I would imagine that the high rents finally put this one under. Calliope joins the growing list of closed favorite stores in Harvard Sq. -

When the FAO Schwartz in Boston closed down, I panicked. Yes, I'm a grown lady in my 20's, but I still love stuffed animals like no other, and there's frequently a need for them in my life be it a gift for a baby shower, a cuddly toy to embarass my bf with, or a new cuddly random animal for my friend to love and us to share an inside joke with. Thank goodness Calliope seems like it's not going anywhere.
Part clothing boutique for children, they have some really adorable outfits for young children including newborns, and even some locally made pieces. As far as the toys go, they have books, games, rattler-type plastic toys and stuffed animals galore. My favourite thing about this place is the range of creatures you can find here. From pandas to iguanas, sheep to lions, you'll find it all here. If there's something specific you're looking for but can't find, the friendly staff is more than willing to help you. The purple ostrich I once bought my friend is a hit with her friends and family to this day. They even have a selection of Babar (the elephant) procucts, for those who are fans.
The quality of the toys here, plush and not, is wonderful. These are toys that will last and last. The staff is knowledgeable, and helped me pick out a hypoallergenic cuddly duck that was suitable for sensitive newborn babies, which ended up being the favourite toy of my close friend's niece (in turn, making me a much-liked "auntie.")
Some of the things in here are pricier than I'd normally expect, whereas others are very reasonably priced. It really depends on the item. In any case, if you're spending a little more, rest assured that the item will survive for a long time. Whenever I come into this tiny shop crammed full of treasures and goodies, I feel like forgetting my 'maturity' and taking home something cuddly to snuggle myself - it certainly brings out the child in me. -

No lemur...which is what I'm looking for. But lots of cute toys and clothing.
I did buy a very cute Peter Rabbit plush. And the person working there was very sweet and gave me suggestions for places to look for a lemur. -

This store is very sweet and sells adorable-tastic clothing, and some wonderful stuffed animals. (Like the cutest Llama EVER, that I purchased for myself.)
Also, they were very, very nice to me and allowed me to take pictures for my art project in the fall after Wordsworth turned me down. (This involved a rather lengthy process since I was sort of animating an army of stuffed animals out for vengeance.) The store owner was very patient with me and it was a real life-saver. -

While I will agree that its got very cute stuff I must say it is outrageously over priced. For the clothes anyway! I didn't pay to much attention to the stuffed animals. I know that the brands I saw in there I also saw in Marshalls for WAY less. So bottom line if you are a young women collecting stuffed animals apparently this is the spot! But if you are a mom looking for some clothes for your kid I think you could get a better deal somewhere else. Sorry!
