want to know where teachers hang out after school? it's definitely not in their classrooms *wink*
i heart the blueberry wheat beer ... it goes great with a basket of hot wings.. and 3 bucks sweet potato fries ...... made me a happy girl.
what sealed the deal? I even got a card for an awesome substitute :)
So when i have 1 too many blueberry wheat and can't go to work in the morning ... at least i'll have my backup plan.
ok so my review rating will totally go down after last nights experience.
Came here and was so excited about wing night. The only thing good was that the JAZZ won the game against the Spurs. Jazz it up baby!
Anyhow, the wings were sooooo dry. Omg it tasted like I was biting into old chicken wings that had been sitting there overnight then refried and drenched in their sauce.
The bbq sauce isn't anything special, but the teriyaki was horrible. It had way too much vinegar in it and was just plain nasty. When the plate came with our wings, the teriyaki wings were sitting on a bed of grease. I kid you not! Look at the picture I took. It was basically a layer of oil on the plate then the wings floating on top of it.
Maybe we caught a bad batch of wings because I have never had them this dry before.

Wednesday...the W = Wings!!!
Between 7-10pm you can get your wing on. They are only 40 cents.… Read more »
I worked at a company in Mira Mesa for about 6 years and my coworkers and I would go to Callahan's after work a lot. We rarely ate but when we did it was on Wednesday Wing Night where wings were like 25 cents a piece I think. We liked to get the "suicide" wings which was an order of normal wings with a couple of (supposedly) really hot wings thrown in so you never know if you were getting a hot one or a normal one. We couldn't tell the difference between the hot ones and the normal ones though.
They have a good beer on tap selection so you can try a variety of beers if you are feeling adventurous. If not, they have the stand by american light beers and a full bar of liquor.
The servers tend to be a little bit bitchy. When we went last month we had a girl that was really nice and upbeat and I was surprised. Hopefully they are hiring better staff.
They have a big patio with heat lamps, tables and chairs where all the smokers sit.
I think there are TVs throughout the bar area inside and there are a couple on the patio. It's not really a *great* place to watch a game but it's okay.
They also have an electronic dart board, Golden Tee and a few other games. This seems to make people think it's okay to sit with your kids on the bar side since that's where the games are. On more than one occasion I've nearly hit a kid with a dart as he ran in front of our game or had people get upset because our crowd was too "rowdy" or was using foul language around their kids. Well, it's a bar. Take your kids to the restaurant side or to Chucky Cheese.
All in all this is a good place to hang out after work if you're in the area already but it's not somewhere that I would go out of my way to go to.
I was there a week ago and had my mahi-mahi burger. It was more than i thought i could handle. I would give this three and a half stars but it can only give me even stars i can only rate. Of course the parking lot is always full. The place is packed, as soon as you get in make a reservation as soon as possible. My friends ordered the infamous wing night menu list. Service was okay considering the hell the waitress goes through the whole night they've been to, i can't blame them if stress got in the way i would do the same thing if i was under pressure. I would definetely come back again so i can try different varieties on their menu. Cheers!!
This is my team's go to place after a night of league bowling. (Hell, we even named our team after the place!) Which is why I'm a bit torn about this review...
While I do have my favorites in the menu (the taco salad, the California Irish burrito, the ribs, and the fries - both regular and sweet potato - especially stick out), a bit of the menu is just meh. My main gripe is the clam chowder - most of the time it's pretty thin. Although, the jalapeno beer cheese is much better - just don't try the chili!
Also, one of my gripes involves the service... while most of the staff is awesome (especially Kim!), there's one server in particular that's a pain in the ass. Not only does she take her time getting our orders (not to mention getting mine wrong on more than one occasion), she's rather forward in not returning our change from our bill unless we ask. Trust me, ask for Kim... she'll treat you right.
Still, with some tasty food and microbrews (blueberry wheat, FTW!), there's more than enough reason to come back again and again. Who knows... maybe I'll attend wing night one of these days!
My friend told me about Wing Night. Never got the chance to come.
Boyfriend & i decided to come all the way to Mira Mesa for Callahan's. I didn't like their menu, not much to choose from. I ended up with the sampler plate & boyfriend got the steak. Not bad cause his meal came with soup; clam chowder wasn't so bad, steamed vegetables, garlic bread & mash potatoes.
My food was okay, too much fried stuff going on, my plate came with fried zucchini, onion rings, TWO pieces of chicken wings that were dried, chicken strips that i enjoyed and potatoes skins + ranch. wasn't able to finish it all.
I think this place is well known for the bar rather than the food.
Don't think i'll come back---
although Wing Nights sounds interesting but the wait seems so horrible..
three stars because good service & nice waitress.
It's a decent sports bar, but make sure you double up by coming here on wing night Wednesdays, where you can take your shot at a roulette plate for 40 cents per wing I believe. Hot wings are definitely enough to get you sweating, but suicide wings ensure that you won't be able to taste the difference between the two, but hey, gotta try! On wing night, everyone must order a drink. Get there early or you'll be waiting for at least an hour.
House brews are good, I love the Callahan Red since I'm a red ale fan. Since it's a pub, you can't go wrong with Guinness either. Plenty of TVs to keep you occupied. There's a bit to be desired with the bathroom situation, but it won't scare me away.
Bottom line: more for fun than for food
The Good: I like the pub setting with the high tables, the bar, and a whole lot of beers on tap. We came on a Tuesday night, so we couldn't have that wing night special they have on Wednesdays ($.25 per wing). However, we ordered a plate of wings and they were pretty good. I liked how they were not dinky and lean.
The Bad: Our server was nice, but he barely saw him. We had to wait awhile before he took our orders and after he did, it seems like he just vanishes. The food was decent, but nothing special.
Try: coming here on a Wednesday night and take advantage of the wings special. The beer battered onion rings, sweet potato fries, and the Irish nachos were some of our favorites.
Don't Try: the Philly cheese steak. Without provolone cheese, the sandwich just doesn't taste right.
I've been going to Callahan's since before it moved to the south side of Mira Mesa Blvd. It used to be in the Mira Mesa Mall tucked next to the Chinese Garden place. I like it now, but it's not as good as it used to be.
The old spot is where I perfected my foosball skills and used to try all of my dads beers, when I didn't even like beer! Haha back when I was 8.
I love their potato skins and the hot fudge brownie. They have great beers, my dads favorite was their blueberry stout, but I don't know anymore. I'm sure they're still good. They always have a huge selection of microbrews and seasonals.
Anywho, it gets crazy on wing nights I think, people made a trend of going there on wing night like it was some dance club, wanting to "be seen." I prefer the quite nights with a few old friends.
I've only been there for wing night but it's pretty good in that regard!
cold beers on tap (i hate beer but their blueberry beer or whatever is tolerable. big plus, trust me)
wings come in orders of 5, sometimes they'll throw in 6 for the heck of it idk.
teriyaki, bbq, original hot, and suicidal.
teriyaki is okay, bbq is pretty good, hot is addicting, and suicidal is an appetite killer cuz you won't taste anything else after one bite!
veggies (carrots and celery sticks) and ranch dressing on extra charge but it's like...50 cents if even.
mm wings =]
I've lived in Mira Mesa most of my life. I remember when Callahan's used to be located in the Mira Mesa Mall, and then when they moved to where it is now. Ironically, I have only been to that place twice, and with both times having a great time! I think it was a combination of who I was with and the food I ate.
Both times I got there during dinner time so the place was super busy but that was OK since it was to be expected. Their ambiance and the decor works well together. The jukebox music is loud so expect to scream your conversation within your group throughout the whole night. The staff was friendly, and our waitress was quick with taking care of us.
During this last visit I ate dinner before I went, and so I chose to have the Mud Pie for dessert instead. What I got was a HUGE piece of mocha almond fudge ice cream in an Oreo Cookie crust covered with fudge and whipped cream for less than $6. It could have fed a few of us. This would have been a perfect treat for any person with a sweet tooth!
I'll keep this short and bitter
The only redeeming thing about this place is their Wednesday $0.40 wing night. The bad thing? Everyone knows about it. EVERYONE.
I saw 6 different people I hadn't seen in about a year coming in and out of here tonight. This place is great for surprise reunions.
Too bad I came here for wings. I came in a party of 5 at 7:30pm. After putting down our name, we are told it would be around 45m-1hr until we're called. We walk to Big 5 and Target to go look at Yugi-Oh cards and come back at 8:10pm and our name is still pretty far down the list. We check in regular intervals until 8:40pm or so, and we're only 3 names down from 2 other groups of 5.
This is where it gets interesting. For the next 15 minutes, we keep loitering in the parking lot, chatting it up--you know, the cool thing to do--and we finally go back in to check where our names are: same position. We look inside and there are 2 empty booths that look like they can comfortably seat 2 small Asian girls and a fairly medium-build grownup Asian male. There are also 2-3 free tables ready to be cleaned and seated.
We go back out and notice that no one is being seated at these idle seating apparatuses. We thought about complaining, but we didn't. Eventually, we go back in and guess what? THEY CROSSED OUR NAME OFF? Not only did they not try going outside to call our name, they gave us an attitude? kthx. In this economy, you would think that management would know better than to hire people who are testy to their consumers.
He then tells us we're the next group to be seated. We wait inside where we can see various groups coming in and out. We actually see him look at us, lock eyes, and seat a group of 6. Is that right? 6?!?! This man lied to me with his glare. He knew what he did was wrong!
Anyway, we finally get seated a few minutes after that. Service taking somewhat long was expected, so it wasn't too bad. 5 minutes after being seated, we ordered. Took around 5 minutes to get our drinks and another 5 to get our wings. The wings were great as usual and we get larger portions than what we ordered. The teriyaki wings are horrible as always, so I laughed at my friend who ordered them. I enjoyed my 24.5 hot wings and washed it down with a couple of glasses of Arnold Palmers.
Final rating is 2/5. It would have gotten a 1, but I did get 4.5 extra hot wings. I'm easily won over by extra food. Only come on Wednesday nights or if you like beer. They have a Blueberry Wheat on tap and have a nice selection of other beers. I want to try some of their IPA's, so it'll have to wait until next week!
"If I didn't know any better, that chick was a um... prostitute..."
Not saying this place is a place where you know whats advertise, but rather it's a place where anything can happen. It's the Irish Pub Americanized/Sports barified, and it's done RIGHT.
As I've said before, Wednesday Wing night is the popular one with waits of up to 2 hours so show up early.
But that's not the only good time to come here. Spuddy fries are their tasty pub chips covered in chili, sour cream, cheese, and other wonderful heart stopping goodness. The last time I went here, there was a huge group celebrating to the side because one of the waitresses was leaving. It turns out my boss was over there chugging along with them and man I wish i joined them. Instead we kept to our own celebration of Friday night. (Who REALLY needs a reason to go out to a pub and drink great beer?)
When we left, that's when it happened. This gorgeous woman wearing an amazing outfit was getting out of her chair behind my friend. As she was getting up, her rear rubbed up against his back accidentally. Which turned into a 10 second long petting of his back with her posterior.
With the cheers, the beers, and the fact that so this place is just filled with excitement, what more can one ask for in a place to hang out?

Just a classic sports bar with beer and pub food. Since the Dodgers/Padres game was sold out (the return of Manny), we came here to watch the game, eat, drink, and root for the Dodgers.
I had the fish and chips which hit the spot and tried their red beer. Overall it was a pretty cool place with friendly staff and a good crowd. Lots of friends hanging out, after work having a good time.
The seated areas have more of a Denny's feel than I would have liked and there were some kids there with their parents. But hey, what the heck--it gives parents a chance to go to a pub and spend time with their kids. What more could fathers want?
This is my neighborhood bar. Things I love about it:
1) it's a microbrewery -- those who know me know I LOVE beer
2) great pub grub
3) friendly staff
I went there this past Sunday with friends who helped me move out of my office, so I treated them to lunch to thank them. Three of us had the Guacamole Pepper Jack Burger (described on the menu as, "It is what it is."). And it was. Good. MMm... Also, was dying to try their "Hopnotic" IPA style beer, but they were out of it, it's that popular. I can't wait to come back and try it.
I'm glad Mira Mesa has a brew pub like this, because for the most part, Mira Mesa is the land of strip malls, but not a ton of quaint dining and drinking. Callahan's is an oasis in that regard.
Cheers,

Wingnight is great! The hot sauce is their specialty!
I'm a bigger fan of its original location in the Mira Mesa Mall across the street.
For this new location, it sort of lost it's original personality.....small, lived in, swanky-ish pub. Obviously it needed to move to a bigger location to accommodate more people, but it lost what I liked about it the most in transition.
This place still has it's popular wing night on Wednesdays....which in all honesty is really good and cheap. The bad??? How crowded this place can get on that night!
This new place is pretty big with plenty of seating (patio seating as well....with view and sound of the Mira Mesa Blvd traffic...that could be annoying).
Food-wise?? Well it's typical pub grub. Nothing to rave about. jut alright to me.
Drinks?? Well you got some varieties of their own brews, micro-brews and all the other typical bar beers. Not too shabby....for Mira Mesa the beer selection is pretty good....not much around this town anyway.
Ambiance?? Well it felt more like a neighborhood sports pub than anything else. Typical. Just average. I wouldn't drive across town to come here necessarily.
This place is probably better when you're with a big group of friends. Coming by yourself feels kind of awkward since it's pretty spacious inside. It lacks that warm, and cozy intimacy of smaller pubs....much like it used to have back in it's original location.
it's definitely a place where you gather your friends and call it a beer night with pub food. They have a wide range of beer selection. The food is okay.. but if you're out with your friends, drinking and sharing the chili cheese fries..it's all good.
it's a good place to watch a game too..lots of big screens on the wall.
I've been here on numerous occasions to watch a Chargers game, celebrate a friend's birthday, and of course, on wing night Wednesdays. The restaurant itself has a great pub feeling and it'd be impossible to feel out of place here. Lots of flat screen TVs so it's great place to watch a game and hang out with friends.
The food isn't anything spectacular to be honest. The wings are alright but only worth eating on Wednesday nights.. but be warned there's always a long wait for a seat especially if you're coming in a big group. I think it's 39 cents per wing? I forget since it's been a while but the gist of it is ~39 cents/wing when you order a drink (it can be non-alcoholic it just can't be water) and you should only order as much as you're going to eat because they don't allow you to take any leftover wings home. Bummer, I know.
Avoid their Irish stew ... it's super salty, and they've had many complaints about it yet they refuse to change the recipe
If I had to give them 5 stars, it would only be for their jalapeno beer cheese soup = IT'S AMAZING.
Pub-Away-From-Home. Callahan's does an incredible thing, it transitions seamlessly between family restaurant, Irish pub, and sport's bar depending on the day and time. In doing so, Callahan's provides the Mira Mesa neighborhood with more life and variety, while appealing to a very broad spectrum of patrons. The only downside is that because people go there so often, they tend to get tired of the same routine. That said, there is a lot of variety choose from.
They brew their own beers, the Callahan Red and Nameless Nut Brown being their flagship ales. The beer selection is very solid and the servers are always knowledgeable about what is on tap and how it matches people's taste. And the servers do have personality; they won't just roll over for obnoxious customers.
The fish and chips are often near perfection, with healthy portions of fish. The Irish stew is served in a bread bowl and for some is the ultimate in comfort food. The Jalapeño Beer Cheese soup defies description, in a good way.
The Grasshopper Pie (a slice of mint chocolate-chip ice cream on an Oreo crumble crust) is decadent and laughter inducing.
Their wings are good, but the suicide wings will set your mouth on fire for 5 minutes. Fun activity with friends: order the Russian Roulette plate; 20 wings, 18 of which are original hot and 2 of which are suicide. You can't tell the difference in the color of the sauce. Hilarity, with some amount of slapstick-style pain, will ensue.
This is a wonderful place to head any evening after work, or watch football all Sunday, and just spend time with friends.
I've only been here two times, and one of those times was for Wing Night Wednesday (special starting at 7pm for wings cooked hot, BBQ, suicide for like $2.50 for 5 wings).
We went there to celebrate a birthday and I would say that there was over 20 of us (luckily we made reservation a week prior and had our party come at 6pm)... our waitress rocked (thanks Ashleigh!) and the wings were good... regular food on the menu, I would double think on that, it wasn't too impressing...
Downer: you can't take your wings to go if you can't finish it so don't over order...
Had the day off and wanted to get together with a few Yelpers for lunch. Had a rough time deciding where to go since Mira Mesa isn't exactly the culinary center of San Diego. Then I remembered some good times I had with guys from the office here for lunchtime get togethers.
So I throw Callahans out there. Big mistake. Sure, it was a good time getting together with some friends, but neither the food nor service was good. Burger, soup, French Dip, cajun cheese fries, and ribs were all tried and the most positive thing anyone had to say about the food was that the ribs aren't bad.
Gotta lay low now while people forget this experience. I dont think anyone's gonna be taking my restaurant recommendations for a while. Thanks Callahans.

Callahan's used to be located in the mall directly across the street from its current location. Back then, it was great fun and great atmosphere.
Though they moved to a much larger location out of necessity, I think they lost something of their original atmosphere and appeal.
Still, for a local pub, they always have a great selection of beers, including their own brewed flavors, and lots of TV screens to watch sports.
My friends had been telling me about this place, and I never thought I'd actually have the opportunity to go for Wing Night because of my schedule and it being all the way in Manila Mesa. Lo and behold, we go last night, and we order the Roulette: 20 spicy wings but 2 random ones are super-duper (make your eyes water and your nose run) spicy.
I was in a group of 10. We all arrived within 20 minutes of each other, the last of our group arriving around 7:15 PM. We waited for a table FOREVER. I had enough time to grab 2 drinks at the bar and smoke a cigarette outside. Once seated, service was pretty fast. Minus points for the waitress skipping over me for a drink order and me having to ask TWICE for a glass of water. But I guess the points were made up when the chicken and desserts arrived, because we ordered 2 Roulettes, and both had extra wings, and our desserts were HUMONGOUS.
Oh, and I look young for my age (good genes, thanks Mom & Dad!), but I felt like it was College Night and all the Greeks were out to binge eat and drink. Dunno if I'd do Callahan's again so soon, but it was definitely worth the try.
Callahan's is not all it's cracked up to be. Their wing night is a joke, the service is garbage and food is just OK. The ONLY highlight is their jalepeno beer cheese soup and the brew man's platter
is decent.
OVER ALL CRAP!
I came here recently with my sister for their infamous "Wing Night." Normally, I don't order hot wings because they're messy, hard to eat at times, spicy, and simply bad for you. Why I ever thought this is beyond me. These wings were delicious! I can't even tell you when was the last time I had hot wings. They were hot, they were juicy, and they hit the spot. Mouthwatering is the best term to describe these wings. Be sure to get a side of blue cheese and don't order the mild. Stick with the hot. If I can handle them, anyone can.
We also ordered their beer battered onion rings which were fried to perfection. This is what you'd expect from a pub like this! Wash it down with their blueberry wheat beer. Some people don't like the combo of a sweet/fruity beer with hot wings and onion rings, but it was a match made in food/beer heaven for me. If you've never had their blueberry beer, give it a shot sometime. It's very refreshing.
Next time, I'm going to go with their red beer (which everyone seems to love) and one "suicide" hot wing. You at least have to try one.
This is how pub food is done right. With real service, real menus, and really good-but-bad-for-you food. (Get that La Jolla Brewhouse??)
I've had almost everything on the menu multiple times. With that said, there's really only a couple things worth getting here. I would though like to point out though that Callahan's has some of the best pizza out there.
The burgers are decent but forget the fries. Nacho's are ok. Callahan's seems to make some classic mistakes though. I'm all for restaurants putting their own spin on things but seriously, black olives in a ceaser salad?! That's just getting lazy. And I'm warning you now, stay far FAR away from the fish and chips. Gross.
Callahan's doesn't really have any drink specials ever except during Monday Night Football, which totally sucks because the microbeers are great. Microbeers are something like $1.50/pint at this time and they are all delicious. My personal favorite is Nameless Nut Brown.
Wing night (wednesday) blows because it's packed with a bunch of annoying ass teenagers that come for the cheap wings and stay at the tables forever sipping their waters so I don't really count it as a "special". It's more of an annoyance.
Unfortunately service is very hit or miss here. It really depends on your server. If you get decent service at this place, leave a good tip because I'm sure these servers had to work hard to provide for you.
If you just want to sit down by yourself, drink a few beers and watch a game this could be a good place though. There's LCD TV's everywhere you look. I wish the owners spent some of that money on the basics though like training your staff properly and updating the menu.
Worst service ever, nobody told us about the specials, when we realized we tracked down the waitress who didn't want to change the order.
My food(fish and chips) wasn't good and pretty expensive.
We got charged extra for ordering a different type of dressing something the waitress totally "forgot" to tell us.
Very disappointing.
A local favorite for flavored wings, Callahan's has a weekly Wednesday special that packs the house for hours. My housemates and I decided to drop in for happy hour to secure a seat for the impending wing rush.
I started my meal with a snakebite, a drink that only an Irish pub could do right. Tasty, frothy, and with just the right ratio of cider to stout, it was instrumental in setting the tone for the evening's wing meal, plus, it was on special for happy hour.
Once the clock struck 7pm, it was time to order. I had done the ridiculous suicide wing challenge in the past and decided to pass on them this time around so I could at least enjoy my meal without having my taste buds burned away, which is why I ordered 5 wings each of the hot, teriyaki, and barbeque. Contrasting my mixed bag, my housemates all ordered the hot wings and, after taking a bite of the teriyaki, I immediately figured out why. The teriyaki taste both burnt and overly smoky, which made for an unpleasant flavor combination that didn't really agree with me. The barbeque were a little bit better, if not sort of plain. The hot had a good, spicy flavor, but really weren't much to write home about, besides that they were on special for $0.40 each, which really adds up quickly, and is offset even more by the beverage requirements.
Overall, I wasn't overly impressed with the food or service at Callahan's. In fact, you could even see the dread and despair on the faces of the waitresses who anticipated the scores upon scores of people who was about to rush in for their wings. Since the first time I visited about 2 years ago, the price has gone up several times but that does not stop people from coming. Even during these trying times, folks still want their hot wings, and they want them now! At least it was better than Hooters, and by a huge margin!
Food: 5/10
Service: 6/10
Price: $$
Atmosphere: 6/10
wing night is the best! cheap ass wings, good ass taste. nuff said.
arrive early cause getting a table can be difficult. :)
I frequent Callahan's during lunch as it is the closest bar to my boring little office. For some reason I find myself in need of their blueberry wheat beer to grace my early afternoon. I wouldn't find myself attending Callahan's outside of work hours but its an alright place. Their food is decent, their waitresses are bitchy, the atmosphere is bland but their jalapeno beer cheese soup & blueberry wheat beer are half amazing.
Look, it is Mira Mesa...the pickings are slim. But for an after work beer and some goodies this place blows doors on LJ Brewing company. The eye candy is at a minimum, but what ever, there are big screens everywhere!
Just have drink your beer and eat the irish nachos...they rule!
It's a little pub & brewery that looks like a cross between an Irish pub and Benningan's. Lugz scheduled an impromptu lunch on a thread and a bunch of us joined in. I tried one of their beers...the El "Jefe" Weizen. It was good but not great. They also had a blueberry infused and caramel infused beer. Didn't try either of those because, well...I'm a guy.
The Cajun cheese fries were really good but they were overloaded with cheese. Lugz hooked us up with those and also picked up a French Dip which he did not recommend. I had the rib appetizer and it was very good but not worth the drive up there. Phil's is closer and better.
Probably a good place to get drunk with your friends but not somewhere I would probably go again unless invited. You may feel differently but the service was nearly nonexistent. I showed up about 20 minutes late and waited 20 more minutes for the waitress to take my drink order. Another 20 minutes to get my grub and the only good service we had was when she came for the bill.
The food was average, the service was sub par and the fact that it was on Mira Mesa Blvd required the removal of another star.
I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars, because it really deserves that extra half a star...
I used to live right across the street and have many an adventure walking to and from. Usually an nice relaxing walk to and a stumble home that I never seem to really remember.
The food is good for pub food. The burgers are above average, the bangers and mash are good, and the sandwiches are good. Everything comes in large portions, but prices are a little steep. The big highlight is the Jalapeno beer cheese soup! Make sure you at least order a cup with your meal...don't worry about the "jalapeno" it's not spicy...it's just delicious!
The beer selection is good enough and the staff is friendly. This is one of the finer establishments in Mira Mesa and a much better choice than hitting up the Chili's down the street!
I never got into wing night, I'd rather fill my stomach with piles of cheeses, meats, and other good stuff and skip on the pounds of sauce slathered chicken skin...
Great wings... This place was nice enough to hold us a huge wall booth that sat like 30 of us for our football gm's and owners meeting. I chose the Russian Roulette wings... The regular spicy was just as hot at the kamikazze ones. They were excellent. Very meaty, great ranch, and the service was fabulous. Sure, i had to wait for a little bit to get my beer, but our waitress had all of us plus other tables. She was very nice and made sure we were happy. All in all, this was an excellent experience, and Callahans was the place to go. Another plus is all the fine asian females there...
Here's the deal. It's the same company as SD Brewing Co. so I'm not sure how authentic the Irish theme is supposed to be here...so don't judge it too harsly because for that you have The Field. However I will say that if you live in Mira Mesa (my condolences if you aren't Filipino and therefore stick out like a turd in a punchbowl) and you want a selection of beers, decent to good food (the exception is the jalapeno beer chesse soup which is so amazing that if I had a dick I would stick it in this stuff) and a place you can stagger home from then Callahan's is great. Don't expect it to be awesome or consistent. It's full of regular locals that want to play darts, watch sports, booze and eat something besides pancet, that's all.
If you can, sit in Erica's section. She's efficient, witty and really makes the experience.
Wednesday Wing Nights are great! 40 cents per wing, and you can get either hot wings, barbecue, or teriyaki. You get two choices on the hot sauce (I went here last Wednesday but could have sworn they came with three hotness levels the last time I was here): hot and suicide. The hot are pretty damn hot - and I have a pretty high tolerance for hot foods - especially when you're eating a lot of these wings. So the suicides aren't for the faint of heart.
The beers are pretty good, too, and not too bad price-wise. Like $4.50 for an import on tap? Correct me if I'm wrong on this.
The service has been pretty good in the past few times I've been here. It can get pretty crowded, especially on Wednesday nights.
I've only ever been here on wing night (Wednesday), so in some sense this is a provisional review.
Right off the bat, it must be known that their Blueberry Wheat is my favorite beer. Period, end of story. They have a decent selection of beers otherwise, but really, who needs anything else? 5 stars if the review was just for that. It is light and incredibly drinkable, with just a strong enough blueberry flavor to taste closer to juice than beer. Incredibly refreshing to wash down the hot wings with...
... which are actually surprisingly spicy. And quite flavorful - not just the kind of spice that destroys your mouth for days and days. I have not tried the Suicide wings, but I've heard they hurt. I'd believe it. One of the great things is that all of their "wings" are actually the drummettes, which have a much higher meat to fat ratio. And they were all quite large drummettes on the night I went. Another cool thing is that every order of 5 at our table actually came with 6. They charge for dressing, but I don't like it anyway so oh well.
While the hot wings were great, the bbq wings sucked. There was too little sauce to wing - I don't know if they weren't marinaded long enough, or what, but it just tasted like plain chicken. I've heard the teriyaki wings are similarly uninteresting, though I can't say that for a fact.
Good pub atmosphere with lots of sports on TV; I wish wing night was on Thursday to watch Thursday night NFL games. In the end, if you come on Wednesday you have to expect a long line - we waited an hour a couple weeks ago for a table of 6. But if you're with good friends and it is a beautiful San Diego night, there are worse fates. 5 stars for the Blueberry Wheat and hot wings, minus star for the other wings, and the wait.
Not a bad hangout spot for larger groups, but not a typical pub.
The beer prices aren't cheap and there isn't a lot to choose from compared with other breweries--I didn't care because my favorite beer is Guinness.
The place is situated smack dab in the middle of Mira Mesa. That's just what I need, more Asians getting red-faced on 2 drinks. That gene must be recessive because I don't have it.
Good beer but how can you mess that up ? Unless you never clean the lines, it shouldnt be an issue.
Like everyone and their grandmothers, I used to come here weds night but I never looked forward to it.
I could never get my mira mesa friends to leave mira mesa and it used to drive me nuts.
They have Guinness on draft, which is a given cus it is an Irish place. The Sheperds Pie is decent but the wings are kinda crappy.
Go to Hooters if you want wings, plus it'll give you an excuse to get the hell out of mira mesa.
I hate 92126, with a passion. I'm so glad I moved.
