Review from Jeff k.
damn, this place is good. its semi-cheap and delicious.
i usually get the white roughy, but it looks like they changed it to the Swai now. I don't know if it still taste the same, but
I decided to be adventurous and got the 2 taco combo with the (Battered Pollock). The biggest reason for getting it, was because i wanted a drink. haha.
if you're unsure about what kinds of tacos to get, i seriously recommend getting the battered Pollock. its damn delicious. and very filling. it also comes with rice and beans . the taco themselves comes with lettuce, pico de gallo, and special house sauce.
make sure you get that tartar sauce as well. its to die for. i would cover that sauce in everything i eat to if i could. fries, fish, tacos, rice... shit, i'd use it to chase liquor.. its that good. so make sure you try some before leaving...
They are usually crowded during lunch time, so if possible come after the lunch rush.
They have outdoor seating as well.
My only gripe: its not too filling, so i usually get hungry later in the day... or it could be that i'm just a fat ass. =/ -

As a college student, I rarely get to eat fish, so California Fish Grill is a really great place to get your Omega-3! ahahaha ;)
I've been here twice and the food is a really good deal for what you pay for it. I don't really remember what i had the first time, but the charboiled tilapia with rice I had the second time was really fresh and well marinated. This place does get busy at peak times, but it's worth the wait if you're looking for well-priced good quality seafood! -

I've tasted most of the things on the menu. My favorites are the seared ahi tuna fillet and the salmon fillet. The only reason why I'm taking out a star is because they're always increasing their prices. I used to spend like 7 bucks max here (but then again that was 5+ years ago). Now a lunch will cost me about 12 bucks. smh
oh and avoid this place at all cost during the Fridays of the Lenten season. you're gonna wait like 45 mins to get your order in. lol
cheers! -

SoCal chain with yummy seafood at great prices...
This place is cheaper than say red lobster and tastes SO MUCH BETTER! I've been to the Irvine and Anaheim locations and have been happy with both. I've never gone during the supposed busy lunch time hours so I managed to avoid the super long lines. This is one of those order at the cashier, take your number and sit at the table till your orders are brought out kind of places. So it's casual, you get your own drinks, pick your table, don't have to tip but it serves the good food you would get at some sit down restaurant.
They offer salads, seafood plates, seafood wraps, fish tacos, soups, desserts and sides.
I always get the fish platters. The fish portions are pretty big for what you pay. The most expensive thing on the menu is the giant shrimp for $14.00. You can get grilled salmon or ahi for $9.99. Yaya!!! My favorite is always the roughy or ahi. You can choose to have it topped with butter or cajun style ( I like this one) if you want and it comes with sides like rice, fries, veggies or coleslaw (I like the rice or fries). You can't beat a deal like this for around 10 bucks! -

Irvine, CA
Why didn't anyone take me here when I went to UCI?!
Working in the OC area means one of two things: great shopping and damn good food. California Fish Grill definitely falls under the category of damn good food.
My friend and I decided to hit up California Fish Grill for our weekly Friday Night Dinner date. Having only stepped near this place due to it's location next to Panera (my fav. college study spot,) I finally got to see what the hype was all about.
5:45pm was the perfect time to go--there was a bit of a line, but it went by quite fast, AND we beat the dinner rush! I was eyeing the white roughy while waiting in line, so my eyes chose that, along with the sweet potato fries. This pairing was great; the grilled fish with garlic sauce was savory, to say the least, and went well with the side of coleslaw and bread as well.
I guess I leave my manners at the door whenever I truly enjoy a meal. In no time, my plate was clean and I felt a "good" full. The kind where you pat yourself for picking a meal that leaves you satisfied to stop eating, and not hate yourself for being overly (and disgustingly) stuffed. I have to say, it's not exactly cheap--even as a working girl i sure as hell can't afford this place all the time. But you pay for what you get--and this place delivers. -
Review from Jackie K.
Fish grill was pretty good. I wasn't that hungry so I wasn't able to get a popular dish, but I did get a Cajun shrimp taco an grilled zucchini and it was good. It wasn't a bomb taco or the best taco, but I do want to go back and retry it. I also had some of the sweet potato fries and it was good. The price is reasonable, but I def think boys will not be full after finishing their dish.
Parking is good. Plenty of it. -

Anaheim, CA
Pretty solid place. The price is very good for a giant slab of fish, and if you go for blackened and sub zucchini for the rice you can have very satisfying, healthy lunch.
I like the blackened salmon salad and the blackened ahi. -

Fountain Valley, CA
I love a mean clam chowder. So, my sister referred me to this spot about a year go but only until today had I taken the chance to try it.
With that year of anticipation, the 4.99 clam chowder left me neither dissatisfied nor wanting more. For a size large bowl I can't bring myself to complain about the price. The potato bits were cut into smaller dices and were soft, which is a huge plus for me, and it didn't take up a majority of the soup which left more room for clams. It didn't come with bread though which is a bit disheartening. My go to place for clam chowder still remains as King's Fish House.
But they compensate for areas they lack in. They offer a good selection of sides, many types of fish and varieties of beer that altogether make for a well-rounded meal.
The fried scallops for 5.00 is an amazing deal. The crunch factor on these is freakin' perfect. I am coming back for these again without a doubt. I also want to try one of the more signature dishes like the tilapia.
Service is quick, friendly and efficient. I went around 7 on a weeknight and there would always be a line but it moved pretty fast. The flotation of this place is similar to Chipotle's, so the environment is both fast-paced and casual. -

Irvine, CA
As the pretty much only Yelp-sational restaurant in Irvine, I've been wanting to try out CFG since forever and the other day I finally got my chance.
The white ruffy with garlic butter melted in my mouth. Surprisingly good for a place where you bus your own table and a plate costs around $7. It also came with a little piece of bread and rice on the side, as well as a plethora of sauces and flavors at the salsa bar.
The interior is nice and spacious enough to accomodate pretty much any sized group. I saw a group of at least 15, as well as casual dates. Parking can get a little hectic because CFG is in a really busy shopping center with LA Fitness, Stonefire, ect.
However, one star off for the service...I swear some people are allergic to smiling.
Definitely a nice-ish place to grab lunch or dinner and get more for your money. I'll definitely be back to try out more from their menu, Irvine needs more places like CFG.Listed in: When I feel like venturing off…

Review from Edison T.
Had this place today for the first time because my friend's addicted to this place and swears by it.
Overall, the food is good and price is affordable. I had the blackened white fish, apparently it's called the White Roughy? Roofie? Well, whatever it's called it's good for the price and the portions are generous. The garlic butter sauce I had on the side was good as well, but actually I liked their homemade tartar sauce the best, it really goes well with their fries. The clam chowder is alright, I swear I think I had like one good clam in the large bowl, so I was a little disappointed.
I prefer this place over places like Wahoo's but it's not anything special to get worked up over. -

Irvine, CA
5 stars??!?! really?
Yep. Cali Fish Grill is well deserving of 5 stars. I have been there a number of times since first going there about 2 months ago.
First of all, it is reasonably priced for the food you get. The portions are very generous. If you go with the grilled fish, you get a healthy piece that easily fills you up.
Secondly, (my favorite), they clearly tell you what fish is fresh, frozen, and where it originated from. I love this idea, especially for a 'semi-fast food' place. I am picky about fish, so I usually pick the ones that are fresh.
My favs are: the fried catfish and Ahi tuna (seared). The clam chowedr they serve is really good, too, and I am usually not much of a fan of clam chowder. I don't know what they put in it, but I could eat it by the bowl full!
I also like that you can sit at the counter and watch your fish being made! This is usually my seat of choice when I dine in. The cooks seem to have it under control. even when they are busy, they get it right!
The owners of this place definitely hit it on the dot! I am happy that a place like this exists in Irvine, where it is hard to find a decent piece of fish for under $10. (if you know of any others, let me know!)
Just be prepared for a line during the lunch and dinner hours!! -

I love this place! It's almost a must for me whenever I'm in Irvine ... and I'm here a lot.
Good quality seafood, tasty sides, and reasonable prices? Yup, jackpot!
I've tried a bunch of their different fish and each one has been delicious, moist, and fresh. I always get half rice and half fries, sprinkle my fish with lemons, cilantro, and salsa, and leave completely full and satisfied. And not only are the dishes delicious, but the service is quick, food is healthy, and portions are a good size (I can almost never finish it all in one sitting).
I would've given this place 5 stars, except I just recently heard of a friend possibly getting food poisoning from here ... so I had to drop a star only because the thought of a place serving seafood that MIGHT cause sickness? Probably not the best. BUT nevertheless, I haven't heard of any other bad experiences and I, myself, haven't had any problems. So, 4 solid stars for this place. Nothing really tastes like CA Fish Grill :) -

This place is great. Perfect for lunch or a quick dinner. It is very affordable. The fish is fresh. The portions are large. They actually have a pretty complete menu, and it's all pretty good. I'd recommend trying a big ole' piece of their charbroiled fish (whichever you prefer), and a cup of their clam chowder. The fries are good too.

Irvine, CA
i love seafood and i love cheap food. ca fish grill is the perfect combo of both!
a huge slab of charbroiled white fish filet on a bed of rice or fries and cole slaw comes out to be about $8. the garlic butter sauce and the cajun seasoning are equally delicious; it takes me a while to decide which to get. i'm giving this place five stars based on the very slim range of menu options i've tried because yeah, it's just that good. i recently had the new-ish hawaiian tuna poke appetizer and goodness gracious i adore that too. prospects are looking good here! also, i want to wrap my arms around the sauce bar and hug it, because the tartar sauces and salsas are delectable.
plus, the interior is dim-lit and cozy, perfect for a date, double-date, or a catch-up session with friends. (:
one of my favorite ways to eat a full, hearty meal without feeling like a ball of lard afterwards. good thing the healthiness factor doesn't compromise the yumminess factor!
p.s. you can substitute rice/fries for grilled zucchini if you're feeling extra health-conscious; it's good! but so are the rice/fries. -
Review from Mimi C.
We liked this CFG. Swai is still the best / yummiest fish to order.
Got baramundi, chicken, swai platters and shrimp tacos...split amongst 5 people.
Definitely enough food.
I would say the Brea one's a tad better (the swai was in-your-face delicious, there),
but this place is a definite stopping point for fresh, healthy and sustainable eating in the OC! :) -

Irvine, CA
They make wonderful fish dishes! They are always quick and the fish is high quality. You can get it served with garlic butter or cajun style (or fried). I am a huge fan of the cajun white roughy, it doesn't get much better! Their fried fish is very good as well however. And their calamari is one of my other favorite dishes. They have fresh tartar and cocktail sauce for all of your dipping needs.
Another great thing about the fish grill, is the price. The cost of food is extremely reasonable, and two people can eat here for under $20 easily. -

Huntington Beach, CA
Feeling tons of guilt from the holiday feasting, we had to find something healthy yet flavorful so we thought we'd check out what the fuss was all about California Fish Grill. The hubby ordered charbroiled trout cajun style with sweet potato fries, the daughter had the shrimp burrito wrap and I had the charbroiled white fish (swai) cajun style with grilled zucchini. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned well!
It's hard to transition from rich, scrumptious foods to healthy eating without giving up the flavor but it is so possible here!
So so happy we found this place! We are huge foodies who are on Weight Watchers so trust me that you can enjoy your food here without the guilt. And the menu prices are so reasonable considering you're getting delicious, fresh seafood!
We will definitely be regulars here from here on. Thanks Yelpers! -
Review from Alex D.
Quality seafood on the go? Sounds like an excellent spot to grab lunch! So when in Irvine, that's precisely what I've been doing for quite a while now.
The wraps and salads never disappoint and the prices - well, the prices simply amaze! For the cost of a junky McDonald's burger, fries and medium Coke, you can dine here like a king - a rather healthy king, mind you.
Highly recommended for everyone, travelers and locals alike. -

I've been going to fish grill ever since I moved down to Irvine since it used be across the street from where I used to live. For the quality of fish you get you just can't beat the price. I haven't tried anything I didn't like there yet since you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I really love their white roughy and fish tacos!

Fish fish fish. Nice little joint. You look at the menu. Order with the cashier. She gives you a number. You find a table. Clean, modern decor. Great prices. Good food. We tried a little of everything. My favorite was the charbroiled fish. Cooked perfectly. And quickly. Get here early. It fills up fast. Kids meals are literally a bargain. My son loved the shrimp.

Tustin, CA
What I got/get:
Charbroiled catfish/salmon with cajun sauce, brown rice, and a side of garlic butter
Side order of fried calamari
Spicy cajun salmon taco (it's HUGE!)
The good news:
This has become one of my favorite go-to places in Irvine for dinner. What's better than good seafood for a reasonable price? Plus, it's a decent amount of food too. I've introduced this place to a lot of people and it's always been a hit! All in all this place is solid and everyone should try it!
The bad news:
This place can get pretty crowded and you might have to wait around a little to find a seat but it's not too bad. -

Irvine, CA
We stopped here on a Sunday afternoon for fish tacos outside on the patio under an umbrella. It was delicious and fast. We had wine and soft drinks, too. The fish tacos were fresh and great as was the crab and shrimp salad. It was not economical but delicious.
The tables outside and inside were plentiful and clean as were the restrooms. -

Oh, greetings FISH GRILL.
I'm normally not a fish-type of girl (ha..ha) but decided to try it out with one of my good friends. But more along the lines of, "Leslie, it's time to put away your carnivore ways and embrace change." And Fish Grill...you have made me love change.
Had the Salmon because it was a 'customer favorite' and it was deee-licious. I loved that it was $9.99 for rice (GENEROUS, WHOOP), slice of bread, coleslaw, fries and two large chunks of fish. I just leave a happy camper when I get what I pay for. You have to get the fries, I am in utter, senseless love with their fries (garlic?).
Plenty of seating available and outside as well (heat lamps, ya'll won't freeze). The service was great which for some reason surprised me because 1) you seat yourself 2) they bring you your food?
Anyways, as a carnivore-to-the-bone girl, I'd say this is a pretty fantastic place to get your fish on. -

Santa Clara, CA
Everyone loves this place, before I moved to Irvine, this was on the "places to go eat" during trips to SoCal. Now that I moved here I've had this place plenty of times and it's still good.
Personal favorites are the salmon with garlic butter sauce or ahi tuna. Everyone seems to like the white ruffie (now called white fish) but it's too soft and almost airy for my personal preference. The plates come with coleslaw, a slice of bread, and choice of rice or fries (they let you get half of each too!). You'll definitely leave this place feeling full but knowing you didn't put garbage into your system. The filet of fish is usually large and spans across the width of the plate. The total comes to about 8 - 11 dollars with tax depending on which fish you choose.
Their fish tacos aren't bad either. At about 2.50-3.50 each, you can basically be content with 6 bucks. The tacos are definitely packed with goodies. In the end, this place is worth trying and you'll probably leave as a fan. I also recommend trying their house tartar sauce which I like to eat with my fish. Just a note, sometimes their inconsistent with the amount of fish you get, this may be due to seasonal reasons but either way, it sucks cause the filets can get pretty small sometimes. -

Irvine, CA
I love fish grill! My boyfriend and I come here like every other week and we always order the same thing.
In short:
-Decent prices!
-Clean
-Yummy
-Fresh AND Fast
I always get the White fish (Swai) with garlic butter and zucchini instead of the fries. (only $7.99) Their zucchini is simply grilled but is still so yummy! The fries are delicious too but I love my veggies. The fries are perfectly crispy with a hint of flavor that's not too salty. They always place the fish on top of the fries so it soaks up all the garlic-buttery goodness. It also comes with bread and a side of coleslaw. I'm not a huge fan of coleslaw because it's always so creamy and heavy but the coleslaw here is not too heavy. I like to add lemon to mine!
My boyfriend always gets salmon with garlic butter ($9.99) also, but the cajun is also tasty. I'd prefer the garlic butter because salmon tends to have a dry texture sometimes.
The fried foods were mediocre, nothing extraordinary but I'd recommend the charbroiled foods more. I have yet to try the tacos or burritos but if I do, I'll be sure to update!

The White Ruffy that is! Take a dive into this tender melt in your mouth white fish lathered with Garlic Butter sauce and you'll find yourself swimming in an ocean of AWESOMENESS no other fish can even swim near!
Props to the fish in my belly, You were such an amazing treat! Keep up the good taste! -

I had the Ahi Tuna seared with rice and garlic sauce.. First the Ahi was not very favorable and the garlic sauce (what happened to the garlic?) no flavor... The coleslaw had more flavor than any part of the meal...
Had to also knock them also on their customer service, Never and I repeat never argue with a customer in front of other customers when the customer is clearly correct and proved it and ESPECIALLY when it's a very older gentleman!!!! -

This review's going to based on their service up until end of 2010.
I've been eating fish all my life that were prepared at seafood restaurants that sport American broadcast station names. So it's really, REALLY, nice to have a new flavor and taste of fish.
FOOD QUALITY:
Is -absolutely- delicious. You'll get fresh fish that has been grilled to perfection, seasoned with a delicate balance of cajun powder and salts. Top yourself with some lemons and you're sent to a sea of bliss.
Oh? Have you not heard of their fried scallops? They're the kind of scallops that are lightly breaded and lightly fried. Scallops are cooked to perfectly and go very well along with their marinara sauce or the English tartar sauce.
SERVICE:
They bring you your food along with any utensils and napkins. That's about all they need to do as you pay at the cashier.
ENVIRONMENT:
There is plenty of seating but at the same time not enough. Expect waiting at prime time since this place gets really crowded. Manage to grab a seat and you'll enjoy the urban feel to this place.
I definitely would recommend this place -- however I heard the quality has gone down since I went last at the end of 2010 since they're no longer a hole-in-the-wall. Other than that. Yum! Enjoy your experience there.Listed in: OC Favorites

Irvine, CA
My party of 5 went at around 2pm, and there was no wait when we got there. After we had put our orders in, a big rush came in. I was quite surprised at the number of the patrons in the restaurant, because I felt that 2pm for lunch is a bit late.
Anyway, I checked out the Yelp reviews before I went and to check out the menu. Just based on their website, I was a bit worried I would be under dressed, but when I got there, I noticed a mix of college students, dressed up professionals, and also families. I liked the process of ordering at the counter and then picking out a table...I'd imagine this would be a bit of a bummer if it were more crowded.
I got the Swai with garlic sauce, and it was great! I'm normally not a fan of fish, but this was just the right taste and didn't taste too fishy too me. I got half rice and half fries just to try out my options, but I will definitely get full fries next time. It also came with a little bit of cole slaw, but on my way out I saw a customer with zucchini and it looked pretty good.
As a college student with a budget, I will definitely be returning to this place. My meal was under $10, and the size of the entree resulted in leftovers! I really enjoyed my meal here.
Can't get better than this :) -
Review from Annie D.
I love this place for fish. It's an order up restaurant so you order at the counter and they give you a number. Nonetheless, service is excellent here. Their condiment bar is always clean and well stocked with the best tartar sauces. I definitely recommend the Swai. The salmon tasted fishy the last time we ordered it but the swai always comes out good. They also have fried options but I like to stick to the Charboiled plates with a side order of the grilled zucchini. The giant shrimp platter was a little tough and Loco M. really did not like the fact the shrimps were still in their shell. "What do you mean I have to work for my food." Lol. Come here and order your favorite fish from the charboiled menu! You will not be disappointed. Only downside, they charge extra for brown rice. Boo!

Yum! I've been meaning to try this place for a while and I have every reason to, it turned out to be really good! Usually I like to give places thus good four stars since it's not miraculously delicious but the servers seemed really nice and happy to help.
I got the white ruffy with garlic butter & half and half, rice and fries. The fish itself was perfectly cooked, how much else can I describe it? It was tender, moist, and everything a filet of white ruffy should be. The sauce wasn't too overwhelming, if anything I would say it was lacking, but barely since the fish wasn't drowned in sauce. The fries were actually really good and so was the rice, e everything paired with the fish nicely.
The decor reminded me of Chipotle with a nautical twist, nothing against that. It was fun and fitting, and I would definitely come back! -
Review from Manami Y.
My bf was a California Fish Grill virgin until this past weekend. He loved our meal! I think our favorite was the cajun ahi. It was one huge slab of fish! It was cooked rare, which I didn't care for so we plopped it under a broiler and cooked it well done. It went from okay to awesome!! So moist and flavorful! They kind of skimped on the fries though, which was a bummer. The cajun swordfish was also delicious! We got this entree with rice. I haven't tried anything with the garlic butter yet. Their cajun seasoning is just so damn good!
The difference between this location and the one in Anaheim Hills is:
1. Irvine location totally jips you on the amount of fries!
2. Irvine location's cole slaw doesn't have any raisins in it.
I also ordered clam chowder. It was very thick and creamy, but I felt like didn't have enough clam in it.
What to eat next...Listed in: Something's Fishy!

Love this place! Before coming here, I was not much of a fish lover, but this place has made a eliever out of me. The portions are generous and the price is so low, it makes you wonder how they make a profit.
I always have the mahi mahi, Cajun style. It's a huge piece of fish, just grilled perfectly, and comes with rice or fries, coleslaw, and a slice of bread. There's a salsa bar, so we always mix our own concoction to dip the fries in. The fried fish taco is also excellent and worth trying.
The meal rivals any that you'd find in a seafood restaurant, and at the fraction of the cost. Yummy yummy. -

This place is great. You can get a decently priced fish meal here though my favorite is the cajun style barramundi - this is a tad more pricey but I like it a lot. Whenever I feel the urge to save I would then go for the white ruffy - also cajun style.

What did you say? You love fish? Oh, you must have had California fish grill!!!!

Came here for dinner. I got the Salmon Cajun Tacos and the Cajun Ahi Taco. Both the tacos were DELICIOUS!
The sauce bar have many offerings. One sauce that stood out was the New England tarter sauce. I put that sauce on my tacos and it was amazing, an explosion of flavor.
Seating wasn't too bad only because it rained today. It's usually packed during peak hours.
Great prices on all the food. Everything is under $10!
