Instead of a birthday cake this past year - I just indulged in California Coffee Cake's New York Crumb (though admittedly I'm more partial to the Walnut Spice Cake)

Nancy uses old school ingredients to create old school recipes that taste as good as they look.  She bucks the trends of experimenting with low fat recipes and such and goes for the win with classic ingredients - such as buttermilk and leavening.

All of her cakes are moist and perfect - taste-wise and aesthetically. They make excellent presents, great mid-afternoon snacks, and if you get a chance to try her fresh fruit scones - buy two.

    Trust.

While I was working at a kiosk in the Ferry Building back in 2010, I was fortunate enough to meet Nancy, the owner. She was carrying her coffee cakes inside a little cart, and stopped at mine to ask how it might be possible for her to get a spot there to sell her products. We ended up talking for a little while and she then left me with a free mini walnut spice coffee cake to try out. I have to say that I appreciated how fresh and local all the ingredients were. The cake was very flavorful too. I definitely recommend giving them a try and also supporting a truly small business who's main goal is to bake with the freshest ingredients from scratch.

I'm a bit embarassed by the number of check-ins I have at this place. In my defense, I share with coworkers. And also in my defense, I have little self restraint.

The California Coffee Cake Company is really just a small wooden cart just outside Village Market in the Ferry Building. Aside from coffee and crumb cakes, they also have various scones and sweet breads. Their offerings rotate, but the poppyseed bread is really good, as is the blueberry scone. My favorite is their coffee crumb cake. It's what they do best. And even though it's served in a pre-packaged plastic container, it tastes freshly made. A huge wedge of coffee cake runs you about $4. My favorite thing to do is grab a coffee cake or scone and then run over to Blue Bottle for a cappuccino and eat at the bar. It's my mid-day escape.

It's a good thing this place is a bit of a walk from my office. The walk to the Ferry Buildings cancels out the calories from the coffee cake - or at least that's what I tell myself.

What I had: the Walnut Spice Cake

Usually I don't really like these types of desserts, but the walnut spice cake was delicious! I loved the texture and flavor. Next time I want to try the NY Crumb Cake.

Call before you go.  I trekked to the Ferry Building in search of two tasty 8x8s, only to find their cart empty.  The Village Market employee didn't know the delivery schedule.  Too bad... not sure when I'll have an occassion to go back for coffee cake.

I looked high, I looked low, I couldn't find this place! I have no doubt it was my loss... It was a shame because I really looked forward to my own personal loaf... As did my husband... And momma... Bummer!  Where, oh where, were you?????

Delicious scones. I tried the cranberry walnut and raspberry white chocolate yesterday at Ferry Plaza farmers market.  Will definitely return!

Nancy (a Culinary Institute grad) has been selling coffee cakes by special order and at the Friday market in Oakland.  She has now opened a kiosk in the Westfield Mall Food Court, next to Peet's and the BART entrance.  It is definitely worth stopping by.  The cakes are great with your coffee in the morning or a big improvement over taking bagels or donuts to the office.  While the NY Crumb is my all-time favorite, the Walnut Spice is the biggest seller and the Cinnamon Crumb is great.  She also does a Pecan Pumpkin version around the holidays which is awesome.

We're always looking for something different for breakfast or for dessert and the coffee cakes work for both.  This is a real winner.

Scott and I were walking through the Ferry Building last Saturday (Farmer's Market- it's sample heaven), and we stumbled across a sample of the most amazing coffee cake I have EVER had.

I'm trying to watch what I eat (trust me, I get carried away, especially with sweets), but Scott convinced me to try this and I'm so glad I did!

I didn't buy any while we were there (because I would have eaten it all), but I think it would make a fabulous gift, especially for out of state friends/family. Even a wonderful souvenir for tourists (if they're brave enough to face the madness that is the Ferry Building).

The woman distributing the samples seemed to be the owner and she was so sweet! She really has a product to be proud of!

I had never previously shopped explicitly for coffee cake, but I do now! These cakes are amazing and the shop is conveniently located, so I purchase them on a regular basis. Even though I have a minor sensitivity to walnuts, I still enjoy the Walnut Spice Coffee Cake. That said, the NY Crumb is probably my favorite.

I won't lie - there have been times when I've consumed an entire coffee cake as my meal. Yah, they're that good.

HINT: They don't always have the NY Crumb cake out for tasting, but if you ask nicely, they usually have a hidden stash of NY Crumb tasting cups.

I must say that California Coffee Cake has the best scones and coffee cake I've ever had!  Nancy never lets us down, she brings treats to our salon Oso & Miggs weekly and our clients LOVE her delicious creations.  I've never had a scone that I liked until I had hers.  If you haven't tried them yet your missing out...

Best coffee cake around.!  Make an effort to get some of this coffee cake, you'll thank yourself.  My personal favorite is the cinnamon crumb, although all the others are yummy.  This coffee cake is not as thick as the "traditional" coffee cake sold at most shops but it is so much better: more flavor, much more moist, basically more better ;-) .

    Go Get Some..!

I love the idea of a coffee cake exclusive place, but this isn't quite the style of coffee cake that I favor. It's a bit too light and airy, while I prefer a denser cake. However, if that's what you like, maybe this is the place for you. I'm impressed at the selection of different types of coffee cakes and the free sample cuts are a great idea.

I was walking around the food court in the Westfield Mall and stumbled upon a Kiosk just outside of  Slanted Doors- Out the Door entry with samples of coffee cake.  I tasted two and OMG! there were great. I especially liked the spice one. It turned out the lady who was manning the kiosk was the actual owner/baker. I highly recommend that you give her goodies a try.

even more awesome. Nancy overcharged us $5 (which I didn't notice but once I realized, didn't mind either since it was that good that I thought it was worth it) but she notified us and promptly sent us a refund check. honest and yummy!

The kiosk stopped me in my tracks at Westfield Mall on the lower level as you enter into the MUNI station. They serve two different kinds of coffee cake and both are excellent. They're light and delicious and the crumb topping is just like my mom used to make. You simply must try them out!

Nancy, the owner and baker, made it wonderfully easy for me to send them as gifts, too.  (Thank you, Nancy!)

This woman is amazing, not only does she promote her products in different locations for hours, but she is the owner and bakes them as well.  Her coffee cake is amazing and delicious.  She has all the ingredients from California and much of the packaging is environmentally friendly.  The ingredients are natural and there is no added butter!!  She was in Millbrae where there is a small grocery store called Kimberly's Fine Food.  I hope she comes back soon so I can purchase more of her coffee cakes!  DELICIOUS, the best is the walnut coffee cake!

Outstanding cakes!  I gave the Cinnamon Crumb and NY Crumb to friends and family for Christmas and everyone loved them.  (There are several foodies with discerning palates in that bunch.)  Nancy, the owner, allowed me to sample many of the cakes before deciding on which ones to give as gifts.  It was hard to decide--they were all so good!
