It's always a great day when you can picnic with a full orchestra setting the mood. It's no Hollywood Bowl, but just as entertaining, and more quaint.
My first time here I got to catch CalPhil playing arrangements of Beatles music. We had lawn seats and brought our camping chairs, a picnic, and wine--what an amazing night! Glancing around at our neighbors, you can really spot the regulars who come well prepared while I make mental notes for future use.
The grounds are beautiful and the people are really friendly. They amplify the sound, so even though lawn seats are far back, you still hear the orchestra well. Great for families and budget friendly. We had to park at the nearby mall, as did many others, but at least it was free!

I don't fly home to visit my parents that often...I know...bad daughter! So when I do go back, what mom wants to do....I do. So when I flew home last month, my mom wanted to go to a concert. She told me we were going to watch some group singing Beatles songs at a garden. Uhhh...her description was waaaaaay off.
So we get to where we're going, and I find out its the California Philharmonic Festival on the Green at the LA County Arboretum & Botanic Gardens. The night we went was "Basically Beatles". Oooooh...that makes more sense! Yes...Asian parents don't exactly explain things very clearly all the time.
This was the 2nd summer my mom had attended. Last time she got regular lawn seating, but this time she opted for actual chairs. Lawn seating was $20, but for an extra $25, you get to sit on a plastic folding chair. You're allowed to bring in your own food, so everyone was picnicking. We brought our dinner and ate as the sun set before the concert. Quality time with the family! If you don't have time to pack your own dinner, there are also vendors selling food and beverages.
This is a great outdoor summer concert. Its a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Here's a little tid bit that my parents didn't share with me....you can bring your own wine!!! My dad said..."I didn't know you wanted to drink." Who me? Drink? Never! =P

LOVE IT! Of course, can never ever be as good or close too as good as Hollywood Bowl, but its 5 stars because of the atmosphere....
Atmosphere: Festival on the Green, Lawn Seats are so fun. Basically bring your own mats, blankets to sit on etc... View of the clear sky above, with no airplanes flying by. Music is blasted from the stage. Casual so kids are around, people walking sometimes --- totally reminds me of Amsterdam!
Items to bring: Mats, Blankets, Picnic Food, Insect repellent/candle, Lawn chairs (optional), Snacks etc...
Great for family, relatives, bring coworkers or professionals to relax, great for family-in-laws, GREAT BDAY PLACE!! its only $16 for lawn seats!
*Peacocks roam the area freely so watch your food and have your cameras ready!

Wow! We were invited by a friend to attend this wonderful summer concert in the park which takes place in the evening. An enchanting and magical evening! The perfect selection to treat your family and guest! I love the fact that you can bring your own dinner or have it catered. Wild Parrots can also be seen in various colors flying overhead.
I can't wait to go back!

I'm sitting on the greens right now on my phone...Saturday 8/8/2009. beautiful music, great performances. As I think back on my childhood's musical adventures I regret that I didn't continue playing after high school. This is beautiful!

I've decided to nickname Dawson S. to DAWSOME for being the first to review this event.
I popped my Arboretum cherry this last weekend, and it would probably have been on my list of most romantic dates if not for the excessive phlegm and congestion due to my godforsaken cold. Then again, a little mucus never stopped me from a little bump and grind. In other words, my Arboretum cherry wasn't the only thing to get popped.
If you're hoping to score yourself some booty-ful action with your Sig Other or any other Other, I highly suggest checking out the California Philharmonic at the LA Arboretum. Take along some wine, food, blankets, and pillows to ensure a lovely Summer evening picnic on their grassy lawn. Your date will surely appreciate your innovative planning, and hopefully will return the favor with some innovative positioning in your car's backseat.
Parking at the Arboretum tends to fill up quickly, but the side streets (i.e. Harvard and Stanford) are free, only a couple of blocks away, AND you get to see the gang of wild peacocks that run the neighborhood. Just make sure to keep your own peacock out of public view...or at least in your car.

If an evening at the Hollywood Bowl is part of your summertime ritual, then you'll love the Arboretum's Festival on the Green.
During the summer months, the Cal Phil puts on a series of three to five themed performances here which start early evening and continue under the stars. You have the option of getting a table (and even a pre-catered meal), reserving lawn chairs or purchasing the very inexpensive lawn seats where you can bring your own blanket and picnic and find a shady place under one of the beautiful old trees to lounge and enjoy. (Unlike the Bowl, you can have a lawn spot in the back and not feel like you're a million miles away from the action). The events are very well organized and staffed, and many also feature food vendor booths under white tents to tempt you with local treats.
This is one of the few places you can truly feel like you've escaped the city and can enjoy the outdoors. If you're lucky, the peacocks and other native birds will join the chorus too :)
Tip: http://GoldstarEvents.com usually has some tickets discounted online.
