We stayed at the Calistoga Spa Hot Springs, which is a short walk through the parking lot of Ace, and we had a kitchenette, I wish we listened to the lady in the warm pool and we could've had home-cooked food - we were so tired of eating out!
It was nice, not too expensive, and the deli had some good stuff.
They had a variety of already-chilled drinks, some I'd never seen before, and had to try.
The staff was nice and even if I lived here, I could see myself shopping here weekly - a nice little grocery store.
I love Cal Mart. They have everything you need to survive. You pay a premium, but everything in Calistoga has a premium. This is no ordinary town.
The food is very healthy. The prices are bearable, considering your options. If you're used to 5-star fare, you will find they have a fine selection of wines and cheeses, chocolates, meat and produce. Really good stuff. Their deli and sandwiches rock.
The staff is very helpful and polite. Really nice folks.
I love Cal Mart, and I feel good about spending my money there!
As I don't live in the area, this review reflects what worked for us as we stayed for 2 days in Calistoga:
- easy place to get gifts (specialty soaps or cooking salts for gifts, at about $1 to $2 cheaper than the other stores down on Lincoln Street)
- nice selection of half bottle wines
- opens at 7a if you want to eat something else besides the hotel continental breakfast
- satisfied my specialty chocolate palate
- sandwiches were OK
- staff was GREAT!
I used to like this place but I have had a couple disappointing experiences. I love getting a variety of picnic items to take with me when I go wine tasting so we can munch on them and not get too lit. This used to be the spot to do it, but the last couple times I have gotten containers of their prepared salads, pastas, etc. and have had issues. The last time I had their seafood salad it was so awful and made me so sick... yeah that's the last time for me unfortunately. I think I will stick to D&D and Sunshine from now on.
Also, I always run into issues in their parking lot. I don't know what it is about Calistoga local drivers, or if they are tourists or what, but several times I have gotten close to jumping out of my car and getting crazy in someones face because the parking lot is so small and people don't know how to f-ing maneuver their f-ing cars in it!!
This place is really useful. We went in looking for some cheese to go with our wine and they are apparently experts on pairing such things (as I guess you could expect in this region). We also got chocolate and some other items to snack on. It can be expensive when you are buying a lot of things but for the most part everything is reasonably priced. Including the mint chocolate chip icecream...in case you were wondering.
Good deli and great cheese department!
Grocery items are a little pricey, i prefer to do my main shopping at Safeway, but they have hard-to-find gourmet items for less than Sunshine Market in St Helena.
CalMart is a wonderful grocery store with a great selection and great prices. Their deli is to die for. My only complaint is that they don't have a bath and beauty section like most health food stores. When people are on vacation they like to buy massage oils, scented candles, and fancy soaps and stuff like that. Maybe I'm just spoiled because of Whole Foods.
I found just a few of these items but I was running around the store in a mad rush because they were closing. A girl like me needs a product section all to herself so that I can smell all of the soaps and buy a new face wash although I already own 8 at home.
I returned the next day for fruit and my beloved kombucha. They wonderful selection of organic produce at fair prices. I would definitely return.
This place is fan-friggin-tastic.
It has a good selection of fresh fruit, along with gu's, energy bars, soda, soda alternatives, hot prepared foods, deli foods, and regular grocery stuff. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Here's the best part. They make breakfast. Every morning. I got scrambled eggs, bacon and a biscuit and coffee for just under $5. Peet's coffee. Major Dickinson. It's served from 7:30 to 10 am, and worth a stop. This is one of the best quick breakfasts I've had in a while. I didn't try the hash browns, but there were patties and home fries.
Cal Mart is similar to Sunshine Market in St Helena, though it is less expensive and is better/worse in certain areas.
The cheese department is comparable, but the meat department is much better at Sunshine. Cal Mart has only a small selection of butchered meats, although there are certain proteins available frozen that fill out the selection. However as a plus, the butchers at Cal Mart are much more friendly.
The produce department is better at Cal Mart, although the organic selection is severely lacking. Nevertheless, the selection looks fresher at Cal Mart.
For things like paper towels and garbage bags, I would go to Safeway in St. Helena. It will always be cheaper to get stuff like that at a bigger supermarket, plus the selection will be larger.
For being relatively unknown, Cal Mart is a great find. The tortillas and Mexican food ingredients they sell are really nice and the general stock is varied and sufficient. At Sunshine it's apparent that they ride on a good reputation: the arrangement of the store is messy, everything's on temporary-looking wire racks, and the canned food seems dusty. The presentation is much nicer at Cal Mart.
Not special. Gets the job done, but head to the competitor in St. Helena if you are looking for better prices and selection.
I grew up here and have been in this grocery store many times. It's changed a lot over the years and has gone from being an ordinary little store to a very nice somewhat upscale establishment. They've added a very nice cheese section and hot food. They sill butcher their own meat unlike most of the larger stores. Wine selection is large but that's par for the course around here.
Overall a great store with very friendly people. My mom works here though so I'm just a wee bit biased.
Stopped by this place after a long weekend of cmaping and was pretty much the first commercial establishment I'd been in after several days in the woods. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were, or appeared to be, others who had similarly come out of the woods, too. Part of the charm of the Valley is how the rural simpleness meets citified hauture -the Prius Hyrid meets the pick-up playing Banda music or Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Well this place definitely caters to the former, while serving plenty of the latter. Ordered sandwhiches to go and ate them on the patio at the entrance. Had a chicken salad sandwhich and watched the parking lot action. Wife had the Mushroom & Cheese quiche - not knocked out by it. Kids had small sandwhiches - nothing to brag about. But, if you eat it in the parking lot you get some great people watching.
Enjoy.
This regular looking supermarket has really improved: they now also sell fine selection of quality local and imported cheeses, many types olives & antipasti, but most surprisingly, hot freshly prepared dishes(almost gourmet barring the supermarket setting)
Most memorably, I once feasted for take-out brunch on "srawberry tamales". It goes without saying they have a great selection of wines and fresh produce even organic.
Cal Mart features the service and selection of a Whole Foods while maintaining the prices of a Safeway. What more can I say?
What a wonderful grocery store! They have a full deli with delicious sandwiches that we took out on our stay in Calistoga. Their salad bar is right up there with Whole Foods in terms of variety and freshness, but the prices are lower than any grocery store I've encountered in awhile. Whether you're buying groceries or just getting some munchies for a picnic, Cal Mart is your place.
This is a great little market with everything you could possibly need. They had hot food, full deli and little desserts. We were staying in a local B&B and got snacks for a few days in leiu of dinners. Like Megan K. said in her review it was like a little Whoel Foods, but with a small town feel.
