I've never tried their cakes at CAKE, but if they are as good as their cupcakes, I can't wait to try them!  And I'm not even a fan of cupcakes!  I usually find them to be dry and the frosting too sweet, but not at CAKE.  I recently ordered some chocolate and red velvet cupcakes to give away at work as a holiday treat.  Everyone loved them and started asking where did I get them from.  The cupcakes are also so pretty that you almost don't want to eat them.  And when you bite into them, the cupcake is moist and delicious!  The chocolate cupcake was my favorite.

I also ordered some brownies and they were so moist, chocolatey and decadent that I didn't want to share these!  I love brownies and CAKE makes the perfect brownie.

Everything is fresh and made to order at this bakery.  I think they need to update their website since they don't have a cafe like it says.  I don't think I've ever seen anything in their display case.  It's best to call them and make an order anyways.  The gals/bakers that work there are also really nice, helpful and more than willing to bake you exactly what you are in the mood for.

Now I have to find an excuse to order a cake!

Splendid, Yummy, Wonderful, Delightful, Happiness, Awesome'ness all in one! From first call, to taking the Bride in for her tasting, we received NOTHING BUT THE BEST from all at this bakery!

The tasting was very intimate and nice, even though they are in the middle of a store front remodel, you would never know it. Chef Kimberly is way rad, from her Darth Vader Pen scribbling down every idea the bride had, had. She was straight out and honest. Whatever you would like for your dream day wedding this lady can create it. Looking through her portfolios at these amazing cakes was really cool!

The tasting was $20.00, you get to sample their top 5 flavors, and its not slivers of cake, its actually baked for your sitting, baked for you! You get huge pieces of cake made with love all for you, I thought it was fresh and yummy. The Red Velvet is to die for! The Vanilla cake with fresh Raspberries and cream was superb!! The bride was happy from the moment we set foot into the bakery, she ordered her wedding cake right then and there!

All was great , All was happy! Super mega Thank You to Chef Kimberly and her posse of magical bakers!

Had our cake tasting at CAKE and the cakes were amazing. Creative flavors that you nrever imagine to taste so good. We really enjoyed all of them but especially the coconut cake with passion fruit filling. All of the cakes were moist as they should be. The price is reasonable too. I am very happy with quality and can't wait to have the cake at my wedding. I know my guests will be raving!

I've worked with Kimberly and "Cake"  twice for major events,  my daughter's wedding and my husband's 60th birthday.  Both times the cakes they produced were absolutely fabulous - delicious to the palate as well as the eye.  The wedding cake was colorful, creative and fun.  The 3D guitar cake for my husband was a work of art. But the flavor of their cakes is just...mmmmmmmmm!!! Last week my daughter and her husband were in San Diego for the first time since their wedding 2 1/2 years ago.  We still had the top layer of their wedding cake in our freezer, so we carefully defrosted it and gave it a taste.  It was still fantastic!!!  How many bakeries could pull that off?  These ladies are true professionals in every sense of the word, and a pleasure to work with.

I think I had the gingerbread cupcake and the pumpkin spice cupcake (or some kind of similar flavors). They were moist, flavorful, and soooo good! I couldn't get enough of the frosting--that's saying something, because I usually don't like frosting and will dump half the frosting off a cupcake. I'd love to have an occasion for one of their big cakes!

You can not find a better tasting cake in San Diego than one you'll get at CAKE. Aside from the flavor and incredible moistness of the cake these ladies are artists. This is not your supermarket sheet cake. Give them some lead time, a photo, tell them a little about what you want, and let them go crazy. You will not be disappointed.

Make sure you go to CAKE with a fun attitude. These are some crazy gals who appreciate a little fun with their customers.

They were on the Food Network, eh? Had to check it out for ourselves.

Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Fab Cakes looks from the outside nothing like what you'd expect of a bakery and absolutely like a boutique professional consultancy, and that wouldn't be far from the truth.

We had placed an order in advance for a custom cake, content made of coconut shavings and pineapple bits (piña colada, if you'd like) encased in a seashell, ocean-themed exterior.

For a 12 inch cake that serves 15, it was weighing in at a hefty 7 lbs. No wonder - inside was stuffed full of fruity goodness in some of the most moist and delicate white cake and vanilla cream I've ever tasted. The seashells and seahorse decorative piece are made of white chocolate, the flowers of fondant (I think).

The cake was not your typical mass-produced, disgustingly sugary American dessert.  It was, for me, completely gourmet and deserves to be expensive. Fab Cake puts to shame what some of the lesser LA establishments deliver for the prices they charge.

After searching for the perfect birthday cake for my fiancé's 30th birthday, I decided to give Fab Cakes a try...

Kimberly helped me every step of the way and very responsive to what I wanted.  All I have to say was that the cake looked amazing, but could have been a bit better with the pictures I had emailed her.

The cake was pricey too but for the taste and what you get, it's worth it...

The only thing I would change is that if you are going to spend a lot of money for a cake, please don't be rude...the baker that waited on me looked at me like I was stupid till I handed her my money...so if you don't mind the attitude but want a solid cake...try them!

I ordered my wedding cake from Kimberly at CAKE and holy crap, I couldn't have been happier.  From start to finish, dealing with Kimberly and CAKE was the best experience.  Points that I would like to make...

-Kimberly was very responsive and prompt with emails.  Perfect for phone-phobes such as moi.
-Cake tasting was complimentary, however, you have to make an appointment because they make their samples fresh everyday.

Something that I truly appreciated about Kimberly is that she was straight with me.  She didn't try to oversell me on the cake.  Because of our cake design (a stacked drum kit to commemorate my hubby's amazing musical talent), our cake was $8 a slice.  Kimberly was the one who said we should only order it for 50 guests, then order the rest in sheet cakes.  She kept saying things like, "Our cakes are big, don't overbuy your cake."  I really loved the fact that she wasn't trying to squeeze the most out of me as possible.  Other places were quoting me $1000+.  Kimberly didn't even care when I said we would buy the sheet cakes from someone else (RALPH'S YAYYYYY HAHA).

The cake was absolutely perfect, just as we envisioned (see photo!  It's the white drum kit cake with silver embellishments and wooden doll cake toppers).  It was delivered on time.  And the taste... HOLY CRAP, IT'S ORGASMIC.  The sad thing is that our bridal party served our Ralph's sheet cakes first, so the hubby and I took the entire CAKE cake home!  But it's delicious that I'm still not tired of it, after having eaten some everyday for the past two weeks haha!  We got the banana truffle, which is their most popular flavor, AND FOR GOOD REASON!!!!  I've even caught my dad, who doesn't really like cake or sweets in general, getting a slice of it from the fridge at 8 in the morning.  That speaks volumes.

Everyone comes here to get their red velevt and so do I. They sell other treats that are worth buying, I just don't remember what their names were. Their banana truffle is terribly terrific. The baker sometimes seems mean but at least they bake a good cake.

The cakes are good, the attitude is not. I used them for my wedding and they actually did a good job but they always seem to have this "snotty" attitude. I have since tried to order cakes/cupcakes for different occasions and every time I call they are too busy or need more notice. It seems they require several days notice for anything even if it's a small cake. I wouldn't appreciate people waiting until the last minute to make an order but the snotty attitude and laugh I get when I call two days in advance for a simple (10 serving) cake is what bothers me.
No more CAKE from you for me! Totally fine w/ that!

I just used CAKE for the first time and wow...worth every penny!
I ordered a birthday cake for a friend's 50th.  Spoke to Kimberly on the phone, then all the planning was via email.  After looking thru all the photos on their website, send her sample pictures of the styles I like, gave her a color range, ideas of what my friend likes and a picture of her...then let them have free reign.
A bit nervous to go pick it up and see what they created...I was truly overjoyed with how beautiful the cake was!  And they nailed her to a tee...down to painted fingernails & toenails!  SO cute, it was defintiely the centerpiece of the party and a conversation topic!
Not only was the cake gorgeous, it was tasty too.  Went for the carrot cake with cream cheese icing.  Yummy!
Reading all the negative posts, I am pleased to say I was happy with the service.  Not overly friendly, but not rude either.  Just busy gals that are fabulous at what they do...would definitely recommend!

As a die-hard fan of red velvet and all things cupcakes, I saw this clip on the news about Cake and had to give it a shot.  For 3 Sundays, I tried to stop by only to see the "Closed" sign.  I suppose that I should have looked at the hours on their website.

Anyway, it was TOTALLY worth the 4th trip up there.  The red velvet cupcakes are DEVINE.  The recipe is from scratch, as the owner (I think) who greeted us let us know.  We had a really great conversation about cake and things which gave me a sense that she really is passionate about baking.

You can tell.  The cake decoration of the cake she showed us was beautiful.  The cake itself (1 red velvet and 1 chocolate) was moist, tasty, and had none of that weird baking powdery aftertaste that some baked goods have.  It was a perfect match with the buttercream frosting.

I can't even imagine what the reaction would be if I served this to party guests.  I'll have to find out soon!

Based on their Red Velvet, they kick major ass around here.

My gf has taken me on interstate missions to find the best cupcakes (you name it, we prolly been there), and this place competes with the best:  Retro in Vegas, and Influx here in in San Diego.

The red velvet was perfectly made, and completely from scratch.  We looked at each other and knew we had a winner.  Give cake a shot.

When my now husband and I were planning our wedding, our wedding coordinator suggested Cake as the vendor. Since all her other recommendations were spot on, we knew we were going to be impressed before we set foot in the bakery. When we met with them, they had four tastings out...a vanilla lemon cake, a chocolate mint cake, a red velvet cake and a banana truffle. Immediately, my husband and my mom and I all chose the red velvet and the banana for the cake tiers. I had never in my life imagined I would choose such non-traditional flavors for my wedding cake, but there was no other choice - they were fantastic.

Flash forward 6 months to the wedding...we received compliments all night about how good the cake was and how nice it looked! They did exactly what we wanted...a simple, square, three tiered cake with black ribbon around each layer. Our fantastic florist (Kathy Wright) drizzled the cake in green orchids and it looked beautiful! Besides the small amount stuffed in my mouth by my lovely groom (such a strange wedding tradition), I didn't get to eat a piece but I have the top tier in my freezer ready to be thawed out on our first anniversary!

I even had them make up a Chicago Bears theme groom cake that I surprised my husband with at the rehearsal dinner! It looked awesome!

All in all, if you are looking for an amazing cake for your wedding or special event, look no further than Cake!

Most wedding cakes look great but taste like buttercream on foam.  CAKE not only makes amazing, original creations, but the flavors are divine: almond raspberry cream, chocolate banana truffle, pear spice.  We used them for our wedding and because my husband's not a fan of fondant, they rolled out white and dark chocoate to make the stripes on our cake (see photo).  Everyone raved about how delicious it was!

I've used them again since, and wowed all my guests at a wedding shower I threw.  Check out their website for a zillion photos.  They are truly artists!

striving super hard for ninang status (to my own not yet born nephew), i searched hi and low for a cake spot big on design and even bigger on taste.

the chocolate raspberry creation was round, modestly 2 dimensional jungle themed, smallish and $5 a slice, but being the frugal filipino in all of us i managed to get a good 40 slices out of it.  (i didn't cut it myself but lets just say, there was a line.)

i wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms when i arrived for the pick up.  three ladies, clearly having worked all hours for yet another sold out weekend, were seated around a giant silver table and on the final stages of decorating their own cake each.  its a kitchen really, nothing more.  one efficiently retrieved and handed me the cake i ordered, gave clear directions on how to serve it best, and saw me on my way.

that works for me and i'm sure it will work for you too.

Came here late Saturday night and they only had a few items left. My friend saw them featured on the local news. The nice lady kept reassuring us they would have more items tomorrow. I can't blame them since we were coming in the night before Valentine's Day. It's super cute inside and the lady was nice and helpful. She told us everything they had and I asked for her recommendations. I got the apple custard and it was quite delicious.

I really wish they took card because that would have enabled me to buy more items. I'm lucky I had any cash at all!  I have the biggest sweet tooth so I'll be back for more.

Words can't even describe how amazing it turned out AND....I did the entire thing over email! I never, not even one time met the cake maker.

I recently threw my niece a baby shower and was in a bit of a panic because I found out I needed to plan it literally weeks before! So, I searched online for a bit, and came upon http://fabcakes.com (Cake's website). After looking over the pictures I was confident they could deliver something people would remember. So I called and told Kimberly my situation. She was more than happy to assist me in finding the right direction. The cake ended up being as delicious as it was beautiful!! All my guests were beyond impressed with the cake that I had gotten made. I got a creamy vanilla cake with chocolate hazelnut filling and buttercream frosting. They did such an amazing job it might as well have been fondant! The execution was fantastic.

The one thing that really sold me was my being able to pick the cake up as late as 1am the day before the party. The kitchen is used by catering staff very late on weekends, So i didnt have to rush to get off work and let a cake sit in my fridge over the weekend. Perfect! And Kimberly is super helpful! two thumbs way up!!!!

Lazy at Best! Incompetent Cake Design Maybe!

I had asked the cake team to deliver a Super Why cake; with absolute confidence I was told that the team was up to the challenge. When I went to pick up my cake on Friday what was available was a blue box of a cake with question marks all over and my son's name; this was far removed from what I had expected to pick up given that I not only provided a picture of the design but also requested that the super why character either made (at an extra cost) or  mounted to the cake. At the request of the owner, I provided the character and was assured that they could mount it to the cake. When I picked up the cake I was told that the cake maker couldn't mount the character and so she decided not to do it. It was boxed up and I was told I should try to do so myself. She also decided to skip a few design aspects.

The person delivering this message noted how upset I was with the final product and insisted that the owner would want a satisfied customer. She asked that I call and discuss my concern. When I did call, what I received back was an email which  I preceive as a very sarcastic dismissal since it highlighted the size of the cake and the the flavor rather than the design-the primary reason I selected Cake and  the primary cause of my dissatisfaction.

There are many skilled bakers that can provide flavor and size. I selected Cake for design and what they delivered was designless and uninspired even when someone else's design was offered for inspiration.

The yummy things that are created by the CAKE women, defy adequate description unless you have taste-o-yelp or you stop by and try them for yourself. I just had the Chocolate Cookies with salted caramel filling (WOW!) and the Pumpkin Choc Chip Mini-bundt Cakes with choc glaze...OMG, you gotta try those with their coffee!! (2XWOW!)

Jenn is a total master in the bakery, and her impressive restaurant experience often goes unnoticed. She and Kimberly create some of THE most uniquely delicious and visually striking cakes, and for almost 10 years they have always over-delivered for me. Everything they do is with an attentive, friendly and professional approach and Kimberly always has the greatest ideas.

Whether it's for holiday cookies, Valentines Day treats, special occasion cakes or custom desserts for events...you will never be disappointed in either taste or presentation, and neither will your guests.

Just make sure you have plenty of their cards to hand out, you'll need 'em. Thanks ladies!

The shop could be cute but is really dirty. do they sell soup? do they sell cookies? wedding cakes? whats the deal?  I felt like they might not show up if i was to order a cake for delivery. no thanks.

I ordered a birthday cake for my husband 10 days ago with Kimberly (one of the partners of CAKE).  Went to go pick it up today and they did not have it.  They said they were really busy and must have made a mistake.  To their credit, they offered to bake a cake for me but it would take about 1.5 hrs or call another bakery to see if they had a cake.  Neither was a good option for me.  I was super disappointed and could not believe how this unprofessional incident could have occurred. They did not give me a chance to taste their cake and I had to go home and tell my husband that he would not have a cake for his b-day party.

I will make sure that I never go back again...don't want another party ruined.

Although most reviews I read on this place were good, my experience was somewhat way less than I expected. I had 2 important bdays to plan, one being my boss. I contacted Kimberly via email to do the 2 cakes and granted between emails it got confusing while trying to plan what I thought was a phone appointment around her schedule of taping and what not. After realizing the miscommunication I apologized up and down in return I received an email back saying she would contact me in a few minutes ..in which I sat waiting for a call that never came leaving me with the feeling that my business was unimportant. It's the customer service that prompted me to give this place only 2 stars. I ended up taking my business to Christian at Heavenly Sent Desserts which did an absolutely beautiful job!

Just amazing. I had to get a  cake for an event in San Diego, and CAKE was recommended to me by another bakery. I live over 80 miles away and never met with them for a tasting or consultation but they were incredibly accommodating, friendly and helpful. We exchanged a few pictures, emails and phone calls and in less than two weeks I had someone swing by and pick up the cake and deliver it. Oh my god, my guests loved it, I loved it and I had people begging for a slice weeks later (the cake was HUGE and very well priced). I now recommend them to EVERYONE! Plus, the design was fairly intricate and boxy (we got a question mark box from the Mario games) and the frosting was all chocolate, not that stinky fondant!! No one could believe it was cake haha and it was SO YUMMY!!

I have asked CAKE to provide desert for several birthdays over the years and I am constantly surprised by the artistry and ideas that come out of this bakery.  They make fantastic cupcakes which are a wonderful "cake" alternative for showers and garden parties.  Plus the endless possibilities for any occasion make CAKE one of the best in San Diego.

I went to many bakery stores  with a specific design for my wedding cake; none of the stores were able to make it until a co-worker referred me to CAKE. I had a tasting and loved the banana truffle! And most importantly they said that they were able to make the cake design that I wanted! The result was amazing. I got so many compliment on the cake and still re-order it for my anniversaries. I'm so glad that they finally open the cafe now!

I hired CAKE for our wedding.  The banana truffle cake was very good, but their customer service was horrible.  They had very limited tasting days/times and we had to take a box of samples home, they do not take credit cards, their hours at the shop were very limited and they delivered the wrong size cake to my wedding.

Hands down best place to get a cake in San Diego. I've had the pleasure of tasting there cakes on many occasions. My personal favorite is the banana truffle. I recently got a cake for my girlfriends birthday, she absolutely loved it!. It was phenomenal and everyone loved it. The girls there are super cool. I highly recommend getting a cake for any occasion. There prices are great and theres not a cake they can't make!!!
