Review Highlights
I had no idea that this was a bakery serving French pastries via Korea. As in it's a Korean bakery! You know what I'm talking about, Koreans. I simply assumed that it would be a Japanese bakery with a lot of mochi-style treats. But when I went in, they all the buns and treats you have to drive to K-town for! Who knew!!
I love what they call the soboro, it's a Korean treat from my childhood that is now only a short walk away. I'm HOOKED!
Kind of lost among other businesses in a Westside strip mall, Cake House features several pretty desserts (see the Yelp photos to get an idea)--artistic and featuring ingredients such as sponge cake, light creams, custards, and fruit. There is also an ice box with several flavors of housemade frozen dessert pops (kind of like Fudgsicles). If you want to have your dessert and coffee at Cake House, a few tables are available.
I thought their selection was decent. There was some pastries and a few cakes--a strawberry shortcake, a strawberry chiffon cake, a chocolate cake, some mousses, parfaits, etc. However, for me, many of their options kind of seemed a little similar (though that would be just based on appearance).
I opted for the Fresia--kind of like a strawberry gateau (though strawberries are not in season). The layered cake was very pretty. Three light, spongy layers of yellow cake filled with a light whipped cream and strawberries. The cake was covered in a very light (not too sweet) white frosting and topped with a raspberry, blueberry and a strawberry (cut to look like a face with eyes made of cream and chocolate).
The cake reminded me a lot of other Asian desserts I've had--light, refreshing and not too sweet. Not the freshest strawberries but as to be expected at this time of year.
Prices were okay. Overall, it was decent and not a bad option for light sweets. Amandine Patissiere offers similar cakes (though probably heavier at Amandine) and Jin Patissiere offers similar mousses. Therefore, if you like those two places and are looking for something different, Cake House may be worth a shot.
There are a lot of Asian businesses in this complex as well as across the street. I think I even saw a Beard Papas's. Inside the same complex as Cake House is Kiriko Sushi, which is quite good and not terribly expensive.
I parked in the underground structure. However, the signage was not very clear. I might not have been allowed to park there.
White chairs, White tables. Their tasty colorful cakes and paintings popping out from its white & spotless store, makes this bakery look even prettier. shhh, it's my little gem in the Sawtelle neighborhood.
Breads: They have a wide selection and nothing I tried here is less than delicious. Sweet Potato pastry (sells out really fast so get it if you see it!), dark chocolate creme bun (shaped in a horn), soboro bun (bun baked with sweetened crumbs yum!), azuki/ green bean/ white bean paste bun, custard creme pastry/ bun, peanut creme bun, plain creme long bun. Each one costs $1 to $1.75 only! And trust me, they're not puny like most asian bakeries' breads, so one will fill you up.
Croissants: At first I was hesitant about buying their croissants, until I saw a French guy buying a dozen home. And dang, I wasn't disappointed. Their croissants are flaky, light and very very delicious. Apparently the bakery has a fresh delivery of croissants everyday, so its very fresh. I like to buy some home, and bake it myself (they don't have an oven to warm it up for you).
Coffees: Better than starbucks, and definitely cheaper.
Sandwiches: If you like sushi, get their avocado & crab meat sandwich. It's a japanese twist on sandwich! Needless to repeat. I LOVE IT.
You wont be disappointed here. Buy the breads/ Cakes to go though, cos most of the customers are either studying.... or studying. u won't be served either, so unless you like sitting in the quiet, I say get your pastries/ breads/ cakes TO GO
I have tried almost every item they carry, which includes about maybe 15 different cakes. and 15 different pastries/ breads. I must say their filled pastries and breads (asian style baked goods are almost always filled), are pretty good. The red bean and green bean filling is smooth. The custard filling perfectly not-so-sweet but decadent. Their bread is soft, and because they are freshly baked daily, you are better off eating them within the 1-2 days of getting them. No preservatives here so they can go bad fast. I learned this the hard way after letting their white bread sit for 3 days. They are not the typical pre-sliced grocery store bread (not your van de kamp or Orrowheat).
Of their breads, my fave is their stone bread type thing, and chocolate horns (bread shaped like a horn/ cone, and filled with chocolate custard), as well as their peanut cream bun. I love their ham and cheese croissant. I wish they put more/ bigger cut of ham though :(
Even better than this, is their Crabmeat/ tamago/ avocado Sandwich! (sounds weird but trust me, you will love it); It's like eating california roll, as a sandwich. Instead of typical sandwich filling (who wants more turkey and over roasted chicken), this one has imitation crabmeat, mixed with tamago (japanese salmon roe) and tangy mayonnaise binding them together, topped with slices of avocado. the combination just blends in your mouth. I can eat this everyday, that's how much i love it!
Their cakes are ok. I don't come here for those though . The ones I like are the green tea chiffon cake, and the coffee flavored cake. I feel the cakes in general have too much cream masking the actual flavors of the cake. Nothing was bad, i just ate with my eyes first and in this case, it failed me a little. With high expectations, they end up looking way prettier than they actually taste.
But as with every eatery, It all depends on what you get, and personal tastes. If you stick to the bread and sandwiches and coffees, you will keep coming back for more. Also you can sit at this cute clean cafe all day, working on your laptop. Just buy a little something :)
I bought a strawberry shortcake here for a birthday, and let me tell you it was DELIGHTFUL! I am NOT a cake fan - every cake I try is just TOO sweet with shitloads of buttercreme frosting - Yuck! This cake was perfect - not overly sweet. I ate my whole slice, including the frosting which is something I NEVER do (believe it or not)! The strawberries inside were very fresh and it was simply a slice of heaven. They also put it in a cute little box with a bow and complimentary cake knife/server - too cute. I will return here to buy future birthday cakes. If anyone has had the green tea cake, holla because I'd like to know if its good! No more crappy grocery store birthday cakes for this family now that I know about this cute little place. Oh yeah - their sandwiches are amazing!
As good as it gets for a Korean bakery in the states, in my opinion. Their cakes' taste ranges from mediocre to great, but what makes this place stand out for me are the wide assortment of baked goods and the quality of those baked treats. Breads are perfectly soft, chewy, nutty in flavor, not overly sweet (albeit very sweet stuff is available, too). I love the Soboro and Cream pang (bread); goes great with ice cold milk or with a cup of joe.
The prices are also reasonable ($1-5 for baked breads, $25-?? for cakes). Several years back we custom ordered a cake for my grandmother's 90th bday from here for roughly $300, and that fed around 100 people. Not too shabby a deal, I say.
It's always packed on the weekends, so I advise people (if it's feasible) to go during the weekday/night.
YUM YUM YUM. their ham and cheese croissant is soo good! the iced mocha is delicious...their breads are wonderful. i am coming here for lunch most often. looks like a cute place to study too. i dont know if they have wifi but its ok, i get more done without it. i love this place.
I ate a delicious cake slice here after eating at a nearby restaurant. I have passed by it before but never noticed it until this time when I had some time to use. It was like a strawberry shortcake and tasted fresh and with a light sweetness.
I also had a peanut butter/cream bread later, a flavor I have enjoyed in other bakeries. It was also good but I do think I like the other bread I had (at Manmi I think) better.
Oh, lovely Cake House... why can't you open up next door to where I live?!!
The Yaohan cake was light layers of mocha perfection. Your coffee pound cake is nice and light, with subtle hints of cinnamon. I love the fact that none of your pastries are drowning in sugar and glaze.
The little place is sunny and friendly. The salesgal laughed as I kept adding new pastries to my ever-expanding order.
The perfect place to sit and perch... and daydream you're in Paris... or Tokyo... or wherever pastries are an art form.
Yummy treats at a reasonable price. I can across this place randomly after eating in Korean town and go so pastries here. Theres a good variety to choose from. Ordered a bunch of stuff for a snack tomorrow and the next.
My favorite is the chocolate croissant. I am never disappointed by any treat from this place. They have lots of tables so it's a nice place to just sit and relax and enjoy dessert!
Great little Korean bakery in a random strip mall! I came here pretty late at night when they were just about to close, but the lady that worked there let us in anyways. They had an assortment of really cute, beautifully decorated mini cakes, some french-style pasteries, and a basket of japanese buns (cream, custard, bean fillings, etc). I was struck by how pretty and cheap everything was: I got a custard bun for a dollar and a croissant pastry with custard and fruit for $2.50. The croissant was rich and buttery, with a generous layer of yummy custard and strawberries, rasperries, and a blackberry on it. The service was fast and friendly, and the shop was clean and well-organized. I'll definitely be back here!
2 words - custard buns.... enough said. DROOOOL.
So good! their blueberry cheesecake is so good! all their custards are so good! always wanting more. their breads are so good! everyone who's gone to the grocery in the Galleria has bought something at Cake House. their sandwiches, what else, so good (and fresh)!
Inside was a little warm, and we mistook a teddy bear for a huge chocolate mound but otherwise the custard buns are pretty amazing.
You can eat cake here.
But the cake is very small.
You will be hungry.
The cake looks almost immaculate, like the Virgin Mary tending to Baby Jesus in the manger. Or maybe, like a valuable Matisse painting hung on a wall of the museum.. In the sense that you don't dare to defile it by stabbing it so horrifically with your fork. The taste is delightfully light, and the frosting melts on your tongue.
I am torn. The prices are so ridiculous when compared to the size of the cake slices. You can actually eat it in two bites. It takes willpower not to shovel it down your throat. Just visualize the poor apprentice chef trying to perfect the frosting, then getting whipped by their boss for screwing up.
If you HATE cake, they sell mochi, marzipan, many types of tiny expensive cookies, danishes, and croissants here as well. So take a step into the shop, and see what kind of cake eater you are. Quality or quantity is something you can test yourself with here, since this place offers nothing but the highest quality of pastry.
I rarely write positive reviews, but the obvious time and experience with which these pastries are prepared definitely deserves one.
Great little place a friend of mine and I happened upon. Nice place to study and get some really good tasting cakes and tea. You can do the Brit thing of drinking tea while eating a slice of cake. My cute fraise cake (I forgot what they called it there) had a strawberry cut so it looked like it was a little monster with a mouth and bug eyes. Cute. I didn't try any other cakes but they looked really great. Really delicate. They also had a variety of Asian cakes/pastries as well as "regular" pastries like danishes and what-not.
Decor is nice and clean. Prices are a little high but they do give you a lot. My tea was $2.00 but they gave me a huge soda-like cup of tea.
The fresia cake (white cake with strawberries) was really tasty, not too heavy with just the right amount of rich flavor, and looked really cute. They carved a little smiley face into the strawberry garnish. The chocolate filled bread was good but a bit strange for my taste. The bread was tender but tasted like a hamburger bun filled with chocolate pudding.
Most of the cake is not horrible, but not great either. The chocolate Earl Grey was the best one; the fresia was good; the Yojan was OK; the banana was so bad that I couldn't even eat it. I wouldn't ever go back. I recommend the crepe place(Crepe Dusigne) around the corner, though.
Sandwitches they have are very fresh. The cakes they have are so cute. Their croissant is the best. It's very moisturized and a bit sweet on the surface. Coffee is so hot which I love. And they have very well made coffee cups for sale.
Fancied myself being a connoisseur of patisserie, I decided to try this place on one of my routine trips to Nijiya. The place is tiny, a small display with handful of cakes in it, but everyone of them seems to be greatly appetizing. After trying most of their cakes, I think it's safe for me to declare that this is a great place to go for "tiny little treat" in the afternoon. But I will recommend takeouts.
Try the strawberry mousse cake, it's the best in my opinion. their tiramisu and earl grey cake was avg, and I am biased toward the coffee mousse cake for its "nutty" ingredient (actually it's just three thin pieces of almond, but my tolerance level is low.....). If you had the urge of eating dessert yet tired of puffs and dont want to drive long, it's a good place to go.
cute store!! the cakes are delicately decorated and look delicious! (i'll update after we've tried the birthday cake we bought today) I also bought a cute tea cup there (high quality - made in england!) and really love it! :D
