i love bakeries and im korean. so i may be a little biased here :)

Cake House has actually been pretty successful. There are several locations throughout K town. This one is located on the 1st floor with Zion Market. They don't have the most elaborate stuff but they have a great selection of the individually wrapped buns (filled with red bean, green bean, cream, custard, etc). They also had a great collection of muffins, scones and donuts! The sugar covered donuts with the red bean in them are DELICIOUS! But you must get these fresh. Sometimes they offer them at a cheaper price if you happen to go at night :)

downside? be prepared to fight off other korean women! The store is TINY and everybody wants some bread :)

Right near the entrance to the Galleria Market, this bakery can not be easily overlooked. In fact, we tried it the very first time we went to the Galleria Market. The bread/buns were decent enough. And the ice cream sticks brought back so much childhood memories, cheap, good, milky ice cream bars, simple deliciousness.

However, I remember always being impressed with the delicate designs of cakes in display cases and debated over the perfect occasion to try their cake. Finally that occasion came, grandpa's 80th birthday! Although we sampled cakes elsewhere, we decided on Cake House without ever trying a single slice of their cake. Call it taking a chance or having blind faith?

We placed the VERY SPECIAL order for an oversized sweet potato cake,  which feeds 20-25 people with fresh fruits toppings, paid on the spot. Came back a week later, one hour before the actual birthday dinner with receipt to pick up the cake.

Girl went look for the cake, 10 mins, couldn't find it, asked the manager, then manager went look for the cake, 15 mins, couldn't find the cake, then the manager got on the phone started calling morning manager/chef... all those time, they smiled and told me "just a minute"... "Sure," I politely replied and didn't think much.... then finally the manager came up to me, apologized "sorry, we didn't make the right cake".

wait,, what???? DID YOU JUST TELL ME YOU DON"T HAVE MY CAKE ready!??? THE VERY IMPORTANT CAKE for GRANDPA's 80th Birthday which I ordered a week ago?!?????? How can this happen?! Any day but on a special occasion like today's?!  How can you make the mistake when clear instruction was written on the order receipt which I have a copy of and how can there not be anyone doing quality control, if you've made a mistake, how can you not call me earlier to tell me!!!!???

MAD and freaking out at the same time... what do I do now? there is no way to run to any other bakery now to get a cake plus none of them normally have that BIG of a cake ready made. The manager offered to gave us two small cakes instead, but that's just not the same?!? We wanted the particular flavor decorated in a particular way and we wanted ONE WHOLE cake which also symbolizes unity + family!!! Immediately, I felt like I've failed my responsibility... just miserable... sigh... angry... think, re-evaluate the whole situation.... I am extremely unhappy and unsatisfied but we still need a cake! There is no way to celebrate grandpa's 80th without a good cake. So finally I had no choice but to take on the 2 smaller cake offer, I chose one standard sweet potatoes (w/o fruits) + 1 chocolate.

I probably looked too upset that the manager finally offered to actually gave us those two small cakes for free and we can also pick up our original order on a different day. I know, it's a great deal, on any other day but today, the meaning would be completely different. I recognize the manager's effort of trying to make us happy and I applaud her for doing so, but I really hope they won't make a mistake like this again.

The cake themselves were wonderful. Both moist and fresh, we especially enjoyed the sweet potato cake, not too sweet, definitely different. If you like taro/yam, you will love the sweet potato cake.

Given the quality of the cakes, despite the horrible experience, I award the Cake House 3 stars and sincerely hope they would only do better in the future!

Found this place while searching for another bakery which was closed. Tried:
--red bean bun (great, soft and moist)
--pumpkin buns with this orange filling the texture of bean paste (too gritty to be pumpkin...sweet potato, maybe?  good, though)
--mochi with red bean paste (the mochi was this WEIRD almost sandy texture.  Since it wasn't smooth, they must've started with whole sweet rice and pounded by machine as opposed to sweet rice flour, but I've had that at other places and it's normally great; the texture here was wrong!)
--fried sweet rice dough ball (size of a donut hole...this was totally dry and gross)

In sum, go for the European breads and pastries, not the traditional Asian goods.  There are plenty of other Korean/Chinese bakeries that do a better job with the traditional stuff.

3.5 stars!!  I always visit this bakery everytime I go to Koreatown Galleria.  It's located right outside the supermarket.  LOVE its bread with sweet white cream.  I don't like anything creamy but this thing is addicting.  I recently went there and saw pretty cupcakes and macarons.  They looked yummy but I bought too many snacks that day so I didn't get any of those sexy desserts.  Free parking @ the garage.  No validation needed.

My friend's took me here while we were trying to pass time before we went to the funeral. Ken was like remember that pastry you ate last week, it's here. My eyes lit up since I really loved it. It was so good. Well I found some orange chiffon cake and mocha cake. I bought those to take back home.  Well a few days later I ate the chiffon cake and it was so moist and light. The mocha cake has raisins in it, which I didn't care for, so I picked them out. Well when I went to try it, the cake was dry and tough. I guess sitting for 3 days even though sealed did not turn out well for the mocha cake. I was bummed since I love almost anything mocha but the raisins kind of killed it.

Not to be confused with the REAL CakeHouse WIEN!!!!

The one inside Galleria Korea market is owned and operated by the FAKE owner.  A few years of trademark infringement law suits later, the real Wien took its rightful name back, but couldn't protect the portion of the name "cake house".

The fake owner inside Galleria kept on operation under the pretense that they're the real thing, and even tells people that she's even the owner of the chain stores in Korea.  NOT TRUE!  This woman doesn't know how to bake!   She only bribed one chef trained under the real master chef to work at Galleria, hense the similar taste & design.

The REAL owner of Cakehouse WIEN is the master pastry chef trained in Japan & Europe, and she's the brains behind the chain stores in Korea & around US.  Unless you see the word "Cakehouse WIEN", don't trust them!!

There is also a court order to protect the brand, and the name "Cakehouse WIEN".  The police had to go back to Galleria Cake House a few times to enforce the court order, because the Galleria
Cake House owner kept on operating under false pretense.

ohhhhh...

this is the bakery downstairs next to the grocery store in the k-town galleria!  now i know!  thank goodness i had enough sense to write down the address, otherwise i would have been screwed, because there is NO english signage.

frank k. had the great idea for us to bring a cake for ruby table's official grand opening party.  lo and behold, cake house turns out to be the owner of ruby tables' favorite bakery!

beautifully decorated, tasty cakes, and they saved my butt by customizing an 18-person mixed fruit cake with only a few hours' notice.  usually they require 3-days' notice for custom orders.

english is a challenge, so if you don't speak korean, expect to make several attempts when placing your order over the phone.  when you get there, you'll probably have to wade through a sea of people to get to the counter and then use a mix of sign language and pointing at your ticket on the rail to let them know which order is yours.

for simplicity's sake, you might just want to say that your name is something simple like "john" or "bob," because spelling "simon" took foreverrrrrrr...

ordering and pick-up challenges for non korean-speakers aside, it's a really amazing bakery.  i even picked up a strawberry danish for making my cab driver wait so long, only to find out that he's diabetic.  (hey!  who ended up eating that danish!?!)

$55 for the cake, which i thought was quite reasonable for the size, appearance, texture, and taste.

The only reason I am at Koreatown Galleria is for Cake House or the grocery store (the latter is usually a stop because I am already at Cake House).  I am aware of the behind-the-scenes drama of Wien versus Cake House, but they are doing a pretty good job at replicating the recipes because the cakes taste essentially the same.  Galleria has much easier parking so I usually come here for:  mocha cakes, mousse-whipped cakes, white cake with fresh berries, green tea cakes, and anything else my demanding brat of a sweet tooth fancies.  The missing star is due to the tiramisu, which I have stubbornly high standards for.  It is good, but it needs to be spongier and more moist.  You can call it Koreanized tiramisu, but to me that is like Koreanized pizza--tampering with perfection.

the crepe cake is the best.  35 bucks is a little pricey.  BUT well worth it for that special occassion to wow your favorite sweet-toothed honey.  who knew ooey gooey creaminess of layers and layers of crepes make such a luscious cake.

they also have less-sweet fruity and mocha flavored mousses, cakes and cheescakes. decor is not too ornate.

in the bread department, they also have a wide selection.  i like their walnut cream bread - an 8-inch round fluffy and slightly chewy bread with walnuts generously filled with a buttery, light and creamy cool custard. YUM. only 5 bucks.

they're located on the bottom floor of the Koreatown Galleria.  they're straight to the left of all the supermarket checkout lines downtstairs.

i love asian bakeries. i love living in L.A.

You know whats the best here? THE COFFEE! Freaking A do they lace it with crack? I don't know why but I abosultely love their mixed house blend and hazelnut coffee here! So good! Free refills!

They serve fro yo like every other damn Korean place these days and they also have home made ice cream bars. The red bean bar looked good (since I loved those BB Big bars since I was a kid) but they are like $2. Too rich for my blood. Their breads are pretty good too... the corn bread is one of the best here.

Come here for the coffee! It's good!

Hands down probably the best bakery I've been too. I buy the cakes and the goodies. Expensive, but that's why you only go for special people.

Anything that's round is good, okay, specifically I can't remember the name of the things I like, I just reach and grab. There's a meat/ vegetable filled pastrie that is so delicious.

My favorite Korean bakery in CA.  I have tried many Korean, Chinese, Russian, European, and other bakeries up and down CA, and this place tops my list.  Every time we visit LA, we make an effort to stop at this place and load up.  All the tasty ones are sold out towards the end of the day, so I try to get there before 3:00 PM.

OK, today is Friday and I have plenty of time to edit this review on Cakehouse because I am too lazy to do some serious work today.  I kinda love this place, well actually I like one thing that they have, it's their cream buns, who wouldn't like creamy buns right? ok, I am getting gross here., anyway...
At one dollah each, it's hard to beat really, the bun/bread is all toasty and soft and when you bit on it you hit this soft creamy and sweet cream, yummm I think this thing must not be good for you. Everytime I asked myself "is this lard?" yet I'd get theme everytime, oh the Sobara is also good but I am never satisfied with them, i want some cream on my mouth, ok, I am getting gross again.

I absolutely adore this bakery!  It is described as a Korean-Euro fusion bakery, and I must agree.  When you first step into this pseudo bakery, you are overwhelmed by the activity going on.  But you'll catch on quickly.

The freezer carries the most delicious popsicles.  Though a bit expensive at $1 for a small popsicle, they are made fresh daily.  I love the red bean and chocolate varieties.

The cake stands feature glistening cakes with beautiful decorations.  I tried the chocolate mousse and was pleasantly surprised by how rich and light it was!  They offer large cakes and smaller tarts.  You can also get individual slices.

I really enjoy their breads and cookies.  The lemon madeleines are soft and not too buttery.  I like their red bean steam breads.  The bread is so soft and get progressively sweeter with the red beans at the bottom.

Though the bakery isn't really cheap, the goods are so delicious and beautiful that you can see why the business is so good!

Cake House seems like any other asian bakery on the block.
There are BILLIONS in LA! Ok, maybe not billions.  But there's at least one on every block.
They have the typical treats, cream bread (a thick lard-like cream sandwiched between two pieces of buttery bread), red bean filled pastries, hard chewy bread with a sugary, nutty topping, etc.  This one particularly stood out because they had this AMAZING potato bread.
Delectable balls of soft yet chewy bread with a wonderful cripsy crust.  The center is filled with finely diced potato cubes, very lightly seasoned.
Omigosh.
I ran into the bakery everytime I visited Galleria Market.  Unfortunately, they only served it on weekends and it usually sold out within the first few hours.
Three stars because I went extra early today to purchase the potato balls.  I was told they don't sell this anymore and that they never made it in the first place.  It's delivered by some other place.   WHAT?!

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE YOU CAN BUY THESE BALLS?

Carbilicious heaven!  The best bakery EVER.  They put a modern touch to all the yummy Korean classics, and they have fabulous new treats, too.   And the cakes?  They're to die for.  Beautiful AND delicious, like yummy works of art.  I've tried a lot of bakeries, and nothing comes close to Cake House.

this bakery used to be called "wien" when it first opened ... which is a famous bakery chain in korea--the story goes something like the original founder went to japan to study classical music but instead spent all her money tasting japanese style french(?) pastries and became a patissier herself.  later, she came back to korea and opened a bakery named wien (vienna) and gave all her pastries some music related names.

the bakery eventually branched out to los angeles and opened it in k-town galleria ... except that the korean headquarter and the los angeles branch investor got in to some sort of feud ... thus, "wien" took its name and opened another one down the street and this one just became a "cake house."  in reality, i think both bakeries taste almost identical.  but parking is more convenient here.

everything in this store is good.  i give four stars b/c i think it is a bit pricier (especially the cakes) than other comparable bakeries in k-town.

Some of their treats are just $1.50, which gives me ample opportunity to try the Orange Cake (with chunks of real orange rind and Cointreau) of the super buttery Engadiner (layers of pastry crust & honeyed walnuts).  So why the 3 stars?  I just noticed corn syrup in the ingredients list.  Bummer.

Solid traditional Korean bakery items but what I really love are when they bring out the warm fresh donuts (the round ones with red bean inside).  They do it throughout the day but don't go after 6 or so because I think they stop after that.  People say their frozen yogurt is really good too, better than P*berry, but I haven't tried it yet.  I barely have room for the donut.

The twits working the cash registers are very RUDE and unhelpful. Unless you speak Korean (I speak a bit) forget it. I feel sorry for non-Korean speakers. The pastries are OK but not great. I recommend Tous Les Jous instead. The staff is far more friendly and speak English perfectly. Not to mention the pastries are far better.
