Huge mimosa's in all the fruitiest flavors. Huge! Great patio dining. The food is ok, reasonably priced, and they really know how to poach an egg properly. Did I mention the mimosa's are huge?
I still like Luna, but it's recently lost a bit of its shine -- the food isn't as good as it used to be.
It's still a great outdoor space to relax with friends in. But it could be better. It is not as compelling a brunch destination as it was a couple of years ago.

I had a really almost depressing experience there last night. We decided to pop in before a movie at the Castro Theater down the street. We got there over an hour before our film was supposed to start... and we never got entrees.
Despite the fact that the dining area was more than half empty (they weren't even using one of the sections) the kitchen got crushed by a big party of 11 and couldn't get the food out. We got our salads and cold appetizer about half an hour after sitting down, but we never got our entrees. We decided to cancel them rather than miss the film.
About five minutes before we absolutely, positively had to leave or miss the movie, the (apologetic) waiter tells us that the food is ready to be plated -- do we really want to cancel it? Well, unfortunately, we have to. Over an hour after we sit down isn't exactly acceptable. The table next to us, which was finishing its appetizers when we sat down, got (some of) its entrees as we stood up to leave.
I really hate wasting food (and my boyfriend hates it more) so now we're both pissed off and depressed. Instead of any sort of reasonable apology from a manager, we get an attitude-tastic "Sorry guys!" as we leave the restaurant from some little queen. The end.
Last night I wanted to go back and actually try the food I'd ordered... on reflection, I don't think that's going to happen. So why two stars? The stuff we had (salads, fruit, and cheese) was actually good and our waiter was very nice. Maybe the second star is for hope...
Best service ever. I'm not joking. Our waitress was so awesome... Ginger B. and I got there right on time, and our friends were an hour and a half late... our server never made us feel like we were a pain in her money-makin ass.
A few bottles of champers, and a few choose-your-own juice selections later, anything would have been delicious. I was a salad munching, champers guzzlin, man-watchin fiend.
They recently got some new patio furniture, and it makes everything look sharp and comfy.

Picture it... Sicily... 1943. Nah... I kid. BUT, this place is memorable, for sure.
From the hot studs walking around the wooden floors to the pipiing hot dishes... all of which are very different than most restaurants of this category. Luna has some unique twists in how they execute great, simple food by keeping it simple but not boring. Seasoning is everything but it's also not necessary all the time. Luna knows when to and when not to and what to and what not to.
I've been here on two separate occassions. First time I was with Maximus. He loved the outdoor heating and patio... as did I. But what he REALLY loved was all the attention from the friendly patrons and awesome staff who seated us (a table of 4 Deaf adults looking to act like children). lol
Great food, HUGE brunch Mamosas... HUGE!!! %-)
Maximus was totally loved and welcomed. My Deaf friends were totally loved and welcomed and the staff was not ONLY well trained in the lighting needs of Deaf people but was ALSO prepared with pads of paper and pen. One Waiter seemed "curious" with the ASL so we taught him a little "some-some"... uh, huh... you know she did. ;-)
OVERALL GREAT TIME! FOOD IS AWESOME! BRUNCH TIME IS GREAT BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS AND HARD LANDSCAPING WORK ON THE PATIO. NIGHT IS LOVELY AND SWEET AND TOTALLY ROMANTIC... if you're into that sort of thing. ;-)

1 star for great people watching.
1 star for cute, outside patio dining.
1 star for giant, delicious mimosas.
Unfortunately, the food does not impress but it's decent enough and the prices are good, so if you are looking for a nice atmosphere, this is a great place for brunch. It took awhile for us to get our food, but we didn't mind because we were enjoying relaxing on the patio, nursing our hangovers with their delicious fruity mimosas. On a nice day, this is a great place for brunch.

I heart back patio brunching. I heart back patio brunching in sunny weather under lovely canopies with beautiful company. That was my brunch experience last Saturday at Caffe Luna Piena with my best friend and my friend David who is seriously one of the most attractive people I know. And not just physical beauty (which he has in exceeding proportions), but his great joie de vivre, storytelling, and easy way about him. I hadn't seen David in almost eight years, but he was still looking edible.
Speaking of food, I had the smoked salmon cakes. VERY good. It came with a perfectly poached egg on top of each cake, and the yolk ran over each cake to make a fantastic sauce over it. Home fries, a small side of field greens dressed lightly and deliciously, and a bowl of sweet, juicy fruit also came with the meal, making one feel less guilty about the big platter.
Because I was too busy stuffing my face and paying attention to the way David's pecs where giving lovely contours to his shirt and our conversation, I didn't really notice the service and couldn't tell you if they were any good or not. Plus he paid for brunch! What a guy!
Indeed, it's a place one could people watch day-in and day-out. Saw so many hot guys coming, going and staying....
So all in all, I'd have to say I should go back with less distracting company to give a more thorough review, but for setting up a nice little brunch, I'd give the place four stars.

Okay, so I nearly nixed the idea of going to Luna for Sunday brunch based on the recent reviews. However, it was convenient, we needed to try some place different and wanted a low-key, comfortable spot to sit and talk. Luna was perfect. The food was better than adequate, it was actually quite tasty, and the service was about as good was we wanted it to be. I have to admit we were a bit put off with the fact that the person who seated us, the busser and the server all mentioned they were a bit tired from last night's activities (none of which included working at Luna), but they were all quite friendly and took care of us just fine. I'm not sure how a gay person has not been to this place, but I found it perfect for a casual Sunday morning breakfast (that was not too expensive). I went about a half star extra because I felt better rounding up than down.

The thing that confuses people the most about this restaurant is its name. The sign asserts "Luna", though it once said "Luna Piena". Now the proper name is Caffe Luna Piena, but if you just say "Let's eat at Luna!", many friends will say, "Yum, Luna Park on Valencia, right?"
NO. This is not Luna Park. Over the years, the management tried to make this place work and break new ground, which every restaurant should try to do in some way. But the place is nothing more than an overpriced cafe and brunch hangout with good food.
For dinner, the seafood dishes are all pretty much winners, and the steak dinners usually arrive to our liking. For brunch, most of the food works, like the eggs benedict with house potatoes. But honestly the best thing that Luna (Piena) makes are those homemade buttermilk biscuits! I always order a side of two biscuits during every visit. Whenever they are out of them (which seems to happen often), I throw a temper tantrum. In my head, I mean.
The big problem here is the bill. I never thought a simple bill could feel like rape, but it does at Luna Piena. Be warned, your check will turn a seemingly light lunch sour. Just make sure to hold all of it in, and then decide later whether you will dump that kind of money into a meal again.
A side note about the social aspect of Luna: Most of my gay friends come here to be seen by other local party boys who frequent this place. Well all right, it must really be worth it, huh!

My girlfriend and I came here with two other friends and found the place to be great. The service was friendly and the food was excellent. We ordered the cheese starter and were pleasantly surprised to find rather generous portions chevre, blue, brie and some other cheese. I got the shrimp and scallop risotto which was wonderful. My girlfriend got the muscles with fries. The muscles weren't the best we've have had but they were pretty good.
Another restaurant that has dulled over the years. I've heard that several changes in ownership have left Cafe Luna in a lurch. The once adorable patio is showing signs of aging. The staff is pleasant, but there are few breakfast diners to be seen. And, the portion sizes seem to be shrinking (which isn't necessarily a complaint on my part). I hope that his little escape on Castro Street can weather the changes.

Holy crap.
My bf and I used to live in the castro, and loved coming to Luna Piena. That changed for us yesterday.
Upon arrival, we noticed that they changed the check-in for a table to the rear of the restaurant near the patio. We walked in as the host was seating a table of 4. When he came back to the front area, my bf politely asked if we could put our name down for a table for 3. The host then proceeded to berate us, told us that we were foolish for not talking to him, and gave us a completely nasty reception.
We walked out the door, and as many fond memories we had of this place, I doubt we'll be coming back.
breakfast/brunch. on the weekend. nothing else.
it was BIZZY in the city this weekend, no? i ate hear this morning as i had a hannkering for 1. eggs; 2. sittin in the sun; 3. mimosas; and 4. nostalgia.
man this place is getting to be quite a little whorehouse of late, but i guess what place isn't in the city? once you're good, everyone needs to have a piece of you... that's life. make it work.
outdoor seating. hells yes.
food is excellent. the tell tale sign is that i don't even LIKE eggs Benedict or aioli on poached anything that much, but for some reason at this place i do. another thing i notice about this place is that i eat everything on my plate. nothin's left at the end. not one little ort. today i had the salmon cakes and eggs with an english. i inhaled that shit and i wasn't even that hungry.
large mimosas? how can you go wrong? well, one way to go wrong is by charging like 9 bucks for it. butt they're good, so who friggin cares.
oh yeah. so parking sucks. it's the Castro for crying out loud. line is usually out the door and if you get on the "list" make sure to pay attention. i like to wear super tight tee-shirts so i get in a little faster. there's really no rhyme to the reason for how they seat you -- it's all about the biceps. MALE biceps, mind you.

Brunch today could've been bad really awkward: it was with my ex, with whom I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to reconcile for about 3 months.
Cue Luna, in all its glory...
AMBIANCE:
We had to park about 6 blocks away, which gave us plenty of time to get really chilly and walk arm-in-arm. We were seated immediately, and directly under a heater - which led me to ditch my bulky layers and show off my *ahem* assets.
SERVICE:
When we were greeted, the girl actually remembered me from my visit almost a week ago - my first time there. Sweet! Our server today was almost as awesome as she was - BIG bonus. And when I asked to take my leftovers home, not only did they not give me the stink eye, but *both times* they separated the savory stuff from the fruit. HOW AWESOME IS THAT?
FOOD:
The biscuit was hot enough to melt the chilled pat of butter, the fruit cup was full to the brim with ripe, tender morsels, and the potatoes (home fries? country potatoes? WHO CARES??) were flavorful and crispy. The mimosa combo, which we eventually polished off, helped the conversation ramble pleasantly. Unfortunately the Hot Scramble wasn't even remotely spicy, so next time I'll try something new - or just get the Eggs Oscar again - they're fanTAStic.
And as for the ex? I won't go into detail, but I think we're a step closer to reconciliation. Whether or not the mimosa combo helped is entirely debatable.
Fun patio seating in the back... or is it the only seating? The servers are always fun and pretty attentive... sometime... The food is a o k. It isn't anything super great, but it's fun for a "whenever lunch" or a "I have no idea where to eat dinner"... BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY IS JUSTIN... JUSTIN is the resident cat who hangs out in the patio. If you are lucky, you can get a seat with him once in a while. I have had the pleasure of sharing a table with him, I sneaked him a piece of chicken from my salad. I'm actually giving Justin his own star. So... three stars for the food, and one magically pudgy kitty tummy star for Justin.
What's better than a champagne sampler with your weekend brunch?! Two =)
My good friend Angela visited recently and we did brunch the way a great brunch should be done! Luna Piena's champagne sampler includes a bottle o' champers and your choice of two different juices ranging from your typical OJ to your more unusual tropical guava. Since there were 4 of us we thought it only fair to get 2 samplers so that everyone got a chance to choose a different juice. As a result, we got a little loud and just a little rowdy...no one around us minded (I don't think...)
Along with our tasty beverages, we all stuck to the more traditional eggy breakfast brunch. Though I've had more lunch brunch items here like their yummy burger or their pan seared salmon mixed green salad -- nothing here has disappointed. All of their egg dishes are accompanied by seasoned potatoes and a humongous buttermilk biscuit which is ultra-buttery and doughy and so very good! I love biscuits - with jam - yum! It's too much food really, but boy is it good!
I totally recommend this place for brunch especially because you get to sit outside in their cool patio - and there's new cool furniture as well! The wait staff are awesome. They're very attentive, friendly, and funny too! I guess most people are funny after 2 bottles of champagne though =)

whenever we couldn't decide where to go for brunch, we came here. Food was OK, but the service was bad... I mean, the waiters were polite and all, but they always, always got something on the order wrong...
(3.5 stars)
Yummy, yummy, yummy brunch. Gigantic Mimosas (for $9.) And a really long wait for food. That would pretty much sum it up. I highly recommend the Chorizo and Eggs plate. Plus, the fact that you can get different juices in your Mimosa makes me smile.
I will be back. Oh yes, I will be back.

This place has changed hands so many times, who knows what you're going to get.
Amusingly, the current (late 2007) management have a sign out front that almost seems to apologize for previous management. This round can actually take credit cards, unlike the last bunch.
This whole mimosas-at-brunch thing has gone too far. No amount of sugary orange juice is going to cover up $2.99 screw-cap bottles of "sparkling wine."
Reading the reviews on this place, I should be coming here for a nice hearty brunch meal and some gigantic mimosas....
Anyways, we showed up on a cold evening. They have a nice patio in the back, fully equipped with lots of heat lamps. It wasn't too crowded and the waiter along with the rest of the service staff was courteous, helpful, responsive and on top of things. The food took a while to come out after we ordered, but no complaints.\; they made sure there was plenty of bread to keep us busy. Didn't get anything to drink but I can vouch for the food. Got the fish and chips -- garlic chips I might add -- and lamb chops with mashed potatoes. The meat was tender and delicious. The fish and chips weren't overly greasy. The mashed potatoes were soft and not too lumpy...just the way I like them. Out other friend got chicken salad with no complaints. I was stuffed but not bloated. Looking forward to mimosas next time!

It just didn't have any wow factor. I know my stars don't add up. The back patio is really special. Great plants.
I had the regular 2 eggs, potattos, fruit, and chicken apple sausage breakfast. Good, not sure how it could have been better
My counterpart had the spinach salad with Pistachios. Looked good.
I would return, but perhaps would be motivated to try something else in the neighborhood first.

I get dragged into Luna about once a year, and while I'm kicking and protesting I hope that it will have improved. It never does. No matter who seems to run or own the place its dirty, the food is a step above a Denny's - in fact, I'll just come out and say it - the food is total middle class suburban drek.
Yeah, patio is nice. Wine list is ok. But the food is never good. The service is totally indifferent.
And cleanliness. I'm here to say that roaches are not a food group.
I'm always a little hesitant when I see the "grand opening" or "under new ownership/management" signs, especially if the place is empty. It can't be a good sign that someone was looking to get rid of a place, right? That's why I've passed by the place, browsed the menu, saw the telltale sign, and moved on. But one night I was out with my puppy, meeting up with a girlfriend, and absolutely starving. I was desperate to find a place with outdoor seating so that my puppy wouldn't get us rejected or kicked out (I had her in my dog purse but the crying would be a dead giveaway; what puppy is silent around food?) We walked in and asked if it would be ok to sit out on the patio with my dog. We got the ok and were seated. Apparently the patio is the place to be as there was no one seated inside but several people out back. We ordered the blue cheese and fig crostinis and the seafood risotto. The crostinis were ok, but the risotto was delicious! The shrimp had a wonderful smoky, grilled flavor, and the risotto was just creamy, cheesy deliciousness. Both servers working that night were very friendly and attentive although we did have to wait a bit for our food. All in all, friendly people, decent food, cute comfy patio seating...i'll definitely come back!

Warm biscuits and giant mimosas, what else does a girl want on a weekend morning? Maybe to sit out on a cute little garden patio? Done. And why not throw in a charming ittle waiter - Done.
Luna is one of my favorite places to get brunch in the city. The breakfast itself is good, but not amazing. The biscuits, mimosas and atmosphere are what makes this place.
TOOK NEARLY AN HOUR TO GET SERVED, AFTER BEING SEATED!
Two tables that were seated at the same time as us? Finished eating before we got our food. Seriously, wth. They guy who took our order was nice enough, but the rest of our waitstaff? Never even checked on us. The guy who brought out dishes kept bitching about how heavy the plates were, all two of them. Right.
The food itself was just okay. I ordered a Fried Chicken Salad, and the chicken, when it finally came out, was crispy and not heavy with grease. The salad itself was eh. My eating partner's egg dish was just run-of-the-mill brunch fare. Nothing special whatsoever. And it's not like the prices are a great deal.
They did comp one of the dishes, but only after they probably overheard my LOUD COMPLAINTS that such service deserved zero tip. All fine and good, nice of them to try to earn their tip back. But honestly, given the terrible service and only mediocre food, I wouldn't bother ever coming here again.
Boo, Caffe Luna BITES.
Smacked in the heart of the Castro, Luna is a very reliable spot for a trendy Sunday brunch crowd where everyone is hankering for a seat in the sun at the outside tables. The services has been spotty, the staff are the same bitches you see out til the wee hours of Saturday night/Sunday morning so they just want your tips but sometimes forget that they have to work and be nice for them. It really depends on the server.
The food has always been reliably better than adequate and the space itself, well the inside doesn't have much to offer and so its billed as outdoor dining so it shouldn't. The look is Miamiesque out there while the scene is very, very San Francisco. I haven't been for dinner in years so I'm only saying yeah for the brunch.

What is happening with all the restaurants in the Castro? It's all over priced and dumpy. I feel like I'm in some side alley in Stockton.
Strange layout. Dirty surfaces. Mediocre food. It used to be pretty good.
It's time for a new owner. Or maybe there is a new owner.
Clean up the Castro!
Proof positive that the Castro is becoming the new North Beach at an alarming rate. Low grade tourist slop is apparently now the norm, because I haven't had a decent meal in this neighborhood since Tallulah closed.
Anyway, it's a shame. I suggested Luna for brunch because we were in the neighborhood and I remembered it pleasantly from my last visit, four or so years ago. And overall, it wasn't a bad call. The space is pretty attractive (albeit weird; they have no seating in the entire interior?) and the patio is admittedly gorgeous. The kind of place if you were a tourist in Miami you would be stoked to stumble upon. But brunch cannot coast on back patio alone.
There are several inconsistencies with Luna. I wouldn't call it overpriced, necessarily, but it's not cheap either. The hostess (while ADORABLE) is a miniskirted, Giants jacket-clad urchin of about fifteen lookin' straight outta Stonestown if you know what I mean. There's nothing wrong with that, but if the gays are going to give me and maria the disdainful once-over, you have to be joking me. And finally, the food is really mediocre. Not inedible, really, but definitely more on par with a cheap diner than Home or Chow. Or shit, even Crepevine.
And that's a bummer, because the breakfast cocktails are generous and the patio is fantastic.
Oh, and they totally took my Visa, so I don't know what that's about with the no credit cards thing.

i've got mixed feelings about this place. it has cute setting in the backyard that it felt like i was on a vacation. there were 2 waitress/waiter there. one, a gay hispanic man and one hispanic straight-looking woman. the lady was very nice and accommodating, the gay boy an asshole. that's that.
we waited for soooo long just to get our mediocre salads and burned french fries. i'm compelled to go back there to give them a second chance because one, it's family owned, and two because i felt like what we order did not represent what they serve well...greasy breakfast, meaty sandwiches and such. if i go there again, that asshole of a waiter better not be my server.
My dining companion said it best : "This place would be great if the food was actually good!". A-fucking-men. Everything was pretty sub-par but crippled beggars can't be choosers.
However, the patio rules and the mimosas are mighty. There were two guys sitting near our table drinking buckets of mimosas, which I would have indulged in had my tolerance not been completely destroyed by a month of minimal drinking (god this mental clarity thing SUCKS). Not sure if I would return, but sometimes you just don't want to look for parking, especially when your friend insists on following DPT laws and it takes you 30 minutes to cross the street.

Yummy eggs and chorizo. The server recommended that I order it with cheese and onions, and he was right, it was GREAT.
All tables are outside on a covered patio with heat lamps. Nice outside atmosphere, good service, we were never with an empty glass of iced tea, and the food came out at a reasonable pace.
When you walk in, it's sorta weird because you have to walk in, past the kitchen and server station and go back to the tables so you're kinda wondering, where are the tables the whole way back. Or at least I was.
In addition to my eggs and chorizo, my order came with breakfast potatoes (really dry) and a little cup of fruit (standard). Thankfully the main part of my dish was great!
The menu had lots of offerings: salads, traditional American breakfasts, burgers, fries, sandwiches and the what not. The colleague next to me got a burger and it looked juicy. I for a brief second regretted not doing that but then I tried my chorizo and was happy again. Next time I will try the burger.
Luna is alright. I had a pretty decent steak and crab cakes @ the joint. I love the patio, and had a very special date there which may be why i feel so giddy about the place. I would however try someplace else in the castro that is better. But it is a grrrreat spot for a lovely date.
I also heard it went downhill after a change in ownership.
Is it possible to go downhill from "Mediocre"? Had brunch there this past weekend, taking advantage of the beautiful weather to sit in the back patio.
The service was eager and friendly, but terribly incompetent. We waited over 45 minutes for the food to arrive, and by the time it did, it was a cold, wilted mess. Many corners cut on the food itself... whoever heard of French onion soup without a crusty crouton on top?
Even the patio seating on a pleasant day couldn't save this place for us.
Located on Castro (between 18th and 19th Street) :Luna offers a variety of foods at reasonable prices. The fish dishes are always very good and so is the chicken. The complimentary bread is yummy.
The layout of the restaurant is a bit odd with no dining space. Outside the are to patio areas one for smoking and the other non-smoking Luna is good food at a decent rice
DO NOT EAT HERE. This place is a damn waste of time and money. It takes more than a few Moroccan lanterns and some potted palms to make a good restaurant people. This place has become like so many establishments in the Castro: they think they have the right to give you a sub standard product (at full price) just because they create a safe space for you to be gay. Places like this TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GAY PEOPLE, they are just using us. I hope this place goes out of business. Their food and service used to be good years ago, but I went there last Sunday and my eggs were awful and the service was ridiculously bad, the waiter ignored us and our bus boy was surly.

It was helped by the fact that I was hungover and needed a boost before the Raiders game, but I thought brunch was fantastic. I knew I wanted corned beef hash even before I went in, so I ordered without really checking out what I get with it. To my surprise there was home-fries (well spiced and occasionally crispy, which I love), a cup of fruit salad (yes!) and a hot biscuit (hell yes!). I scarfed everything down and enjoyed each item. It's not dirt cheap (some omelets are $10-15), but the service was decent. I would def. come back. There wasn't a line, but it was also 10:15AM.
I really like being 24. It's the only time in my life (with the exceptions of ages 21, 22, and 23) where it will be acceptable to stay out til last call, crash on a friend's couch, and create social diversions from my job. I also really like Sunday brunch. It's the only meal of the week where it's acceptable to show up hungover, order something that would qualify as dessert on most other days, and spend the time whining to your best friend about your job. And if you want to order a mimosa at 11:45 in the morning, no one's going to judge you. Although, I normally don't do this.
Best friend and I walked over from the Mission last Sunday and ended up at Luna upon her roommate's recommendation. We had to wait about 30 minutes, but the wait was worth it. I had the mascarpone topped French toast (it was also topped with strawberries, but I didn't pay much attention to those). The mascarpone is a nice, unique touch and is surprisingly light. It doesn't come with any bacon or sausage on the side, but they'll gladly bring you some for an extra charge. It was really good. The price was pretty average for brunch and the portion was pretty big. Friend turned down brunch food in favor of the salmon sandwich with side salad. She said it was very good. We sat on the patio in the back, which has a really great atmosphere, especially on a sunny city morning. Service is solid.
If you have to wait, you can kill time at this store down the block that sells candles, gag gifts, etc. If you go to the back, they have that book, Lose Weight! Get Laid! Find God! (google it, if you're doubting me), which irreverently chronicles how you should spend each year of your life. 15 is rebel against society and 30 is procreate. And do you know what 24 is?: Waste Time. Yep, I think I'm right on track...
Both Luna and the book are worth checking out.

I love Luna because it's close to my house and they have brunch food, which is otherwise surprisingly hard to find in the Castro. And they have that nice outdoor seating. And the service is just so EARNEST and ATTENTIVE. But I have to say that, in absolute terms, it is totally unremarkable. And the wind is TERRIFYING as it rattles the whole entire back patio. I also sometimes come here for a standard salmon-on-salad meal, when I'm too lazy to make it myself, but I have to say I make it better at home in three minutes than they do here.
