8 reviews for Caffe Gelato
I think Caffe Gelato is the best restaurant in Newark.
It's a little expensive for a college student, like me, but for impressing a girl there is no better place in town. The pan seared scallops are the best I've ever had, usually paired with a delicious, creamy risotto.
My other favorite dish is the roasted salmon filet. It comes with mashed sweet potatoes and and a honey sesame glaze that's to-die for.
If you get one of the free lunch coupons they send out to locals, try adding a salmon filet to a salad. You won't be disappointed.
Call ahead and make a reservation, even week nights can be busy.
While I have not been back to visit in the past year, I have been getting their monthly "Free Lunch/Dinner" coupons and even voice mails from Ryan German himself (prerecorded of course). It's annoying. A free meal is not going to entice me to come back.
The place should be ashamed of themselves for being called Caffe Gelato. Ever heard of Capogiro? That's what I call good, authentic gelato. I still can't get over how their pistachio gelato taste and looked like peanut butter. Gross.

I went to this restaurant with high expectations for good food. It's been all the rave in Newark,… Read more »
Although the food was good, the service leaves much to be desired. Instead of being treated as valued guests, most of whom had never been to Caffe Gelato before, we were argued with by the waitress and the manager. We will not return.
I hope my parents don't see this review; they'll probably kill me since this is their favorite restaurant. I'll start by saying that this is a decent restaurant. I'm not going to say 'a decent restaurant for Newark' because who cares? It seems to me a restaurant should be judged on its own merits and not because there's nothing else decent around (and I don't know whether that's true or not since I don't live in this area, but I sorta get that impression when I visit...).
Anyway. Here's the deal. In a nutshell, I'll say the food was good, but the service was less than stellar. I took my parents here for lunch during my last visit (last week, actually). We arrived in the 1-1:30 range on a day early in the week. When we entered the restaurant, we waited for 5 minutes or so while the hostess was on the phone with someone (it seemed to be a business-related call) and while she tried to get someone else's attention to show us to a table. There were only about 3 other tables occupied by diners, so it wasn't like the place was mobbed. After we were finally seated, we perused the menu and placed our orders with our server. I don't remember her name, but she was very friendly and came back within a reasonable amount of time with the beverages. I had ordered a bowl of their soup of the day and a salad with grilled shrimp. The first problem I had was with my soup order. Instead of a bowl, I got a cup. The server offered to bring a bowl after I said something about it, but I just decided to go with the cup and have dessert after my salad instead (not a bad compromise!). After I finished my soup, our server brought the entree for both of my parents, but not my salad. After roughly 7-8 minutes of wondering if my lunch had been forgotten, she came back with my salad apologizing for the delay and saying that it was because they had to cook the shrimp. Ummm, OK? I sorta got the feeling that someone forgot that my salad was to have shrimp added and when she went to pick up all the food my salad had to wait for the shrimp to be grilled. By the time I got my salad, both of my parents were close to being finished with their meal. In all fairness, I will say that the shrimp on my salad were some of the most fresh and perfectly cooked that I've had in quite a while (I wished I had placed a double order!). For dessert, I decided on a pistachio gelato. It was OK but it would have been better if it had tasted a little more like pistachio. As for atmosphere, the decor is pleasant. I'll have to go for dinner sometime to get the real vibe.
Gelato is my favorite!! And love that the owner worked so hard to make such an amazing place. The food isn't anything exciting, but this is certainly the place to stop for your ice cream after dinner!
I went to Caffe Gelato when I was visiting UD & other prospective colleges. So, yes, it was "a few" YEARS ago, but I still remember the awesome salad I had, great gelato, & friendly staff--I didn't notice any pretention (what I do remember is a lot of sampling!) & my snob radar is pretty acute. If you needed any more incentive, the owner got some type of "Hunk/Guy of the Month" accolade from Cosmo--after one meal I remembered the restaurant when I saw that article a year or two later. So if you're ever in the area (which is probably unlikely ;-) give it a shot!
I would say that the most noticable feature of this restaurant is how self congratulatory it is. Wow, aren't we so unique because we sell gelato to you silly country bumpkins? The food is pretty average and while the gelato is good, it's not too memorable.
I've already written a review for Cafe Gelato under Italian food. Cafe Gelato is one of my favorite Newark restaurants. The atmosphere is friendly and the crowd seems upbeat. It's very comfortable, yet there are touches, like white tablecloths, that bring the restaurant up from a casual eatery. We find the food well-prepared and nicely served and I love their peanut butter gelato. I very much like the creamy consistency of their gelato. It's good, but not overwhelming. Their wines are well thought-out too. When our friends come down from Philly, we take them to Cafe Gelato. So far, everyone has been happy.
