Last Sunday I met an out-of-town Spaniard for coffee. It was half past three.

He was in town for a conference and I thought I'd return the favor of other foreigners who have provided me with perfect recommendations when I visited Istanbul, Berlin and other cities in the past.

My first impression was, hmmm, ok - a nerd, I thought I'd stay for an hour tops and excuse my way back home.  I enjoyed a warm cup of double latte while he had a double espresso.  It was amazingly hot for an afternoon in November, so that sitting outdoor was the perfect spot to be.  The crowd was eclectic and energetic.

For starters, we talked about our industry, work and Silicon Valley in general.  As the conversation ensued, we unlayered each other's onion with ease and comfort.  I forgot about my plan to leave, after an hour I suggested, how about checking the Rodin collection at Cantor Arts?

It was a five star experience, both the coffee and the first meetup with the Spaniard.

Disclaimer: I don't know much about espresso. This is review is proxying for a friend who does, David B, since he's not a Yelper and I want the community to have the benefit of his insight here. With that...

...Caffe del Doge has the best espresso in the Bay Area.

This is a great joint for grabbing some coffee and chatting in downtown Palo Alto whether you're upstairs or downstairs.  It is one of the few places open until midnight on weekends.  They play hip and upbeat ambient music without being too noisy.  More importantly, the quality of the coffee is great since it comes from Italy.  You can sweeten it up as you please with the sugar by the counter.

Service is short and sweet where the barristas also make sure your coffee is served with an elegant design.  Parking on the street is tougher, but can be avoided given the public lots.

Cafee del Doge is definitely my favorite coffee spot in Palo Alto. The chocospice w/ cardamum hot chocolate was really good! I liked the combination of rich and creamy with a little kick of cardamum. The drink was so thick and decadent that I had to spoon feed myself.

I wish this place had AC though.

Nostalgia di Venexia? Cozy up at Doge, get some real italian espresso or cappucino, plug in to wifi, and sample the only really good croissant in Palo Alto. You will feel better soon.

Ok, I know this review will be controversial, given the previous ones. Nevertheless, for the love of coffee, I have to write this review.

I've been here at least 5 times. My first experience was good enough that I came back again. However, that's where my enthusiasm pretty much ends.

Sometimes it takes forever to get the counter staff's attention. On at least 3 occasions, they saw me waiting, looked at me, and then kept doing what they were doing without acknowledging they would be with me. I promise that I looked friendly and eager to order. :-)

Now onto the most important part...the coffee. To be fair, I've had the cappuccinos and coffee here but not the hot chocolate, which is what seems to have a lot of people excited about this place. I've been sorely disappointed by both. The cappuccino had good foam but was lukewarm and thus the flavor of the espresso was bland. The coffee tastes like water with a little bit of coffee in it.

They do provide a nice presentation, pouring beverages into sleek, tall glass mugs. However, this may mean your little fingers get a little ouchy when you have to carry it to the table.

1. Pretentious?  Yes.  Do yourself a favor and don't bother looking at the menu.  It's confusing and you'll be sad when you see the prices.

2. Busy?  Yes.  All the time.  Blame the good location.

3. The upstairs area is nice to sit and work (not enough outlets) and the cappuccinos have never let me down.

How have I not written a review for here?

Doge has taken it's place at the top spot for me and cappuccinos (formerly Barefoot in Santa Clara). There is such great variety of coffee and espressos you can get here. The owner (at least, I believe he is the owner) is consistently nice and friendly every time I've gone in. PLUS, the default for their drinks are ceramic cups. Coffee never tastes as good out of a paper cup!

Upstairs has a couple of outlets if you want to work. Just make sure to support the shop and grab a couple of munches and drinks before going up to work!

I've been coming here for the past 4 or 5 years on occasion.  What occasion, I don't know--girls coffee chats, pre-shopping cappuccinos, and lately, late night wine conversations.

It's not cheap.  I wouldn't go here to get my daily coffee even if I lived on this side of the bridge.  You go for the atmosphere and the elbow rubbing with stanford snobs.  You go for the impeccable service and the gorgeously designed drinks.  You go here because you've never had an anise-flavored drink (and you never will again--bleh), chocolate espresso you have to drink with a spoon, etc.

Almost everything you have here will be a) expensive b) beautifully presented and c) delicious or "interesting."

It's a great atmosphere.  Drinks are rich and varied.  Pretty much just a great place to try things, relax, and try not to be offended by the overt Italian pride that manifests itself with  "Under the Tuscan Sun" on the TV.

They sell excellent Italian bomboloni - small donut holes filled with custard (see my photo).  They get them from Four Seasons restaurant.  They had vanilla and coffee flavors.  Much better than the bomboloni that used to be available at the Ferry Building in SF.

Their croissants are OK.

I also tried the robusta mousse, which is espresso, chocolate, and heavy cream, served in a martini glass with whipped cream topping.  It was great, but more like a dipping sauce for the bomboloni.

I used to come here quite a bit back when it was Caffe Torrefazione. The other day I was in PA and needed a place to do some work, so I stopped by. I had a really tasty cappuccino & I love the fact that they use ceramic cups & plates. Although I enjoyed my biscotti, I wish they had more pastry / cookie options.

The space upstairs is a good atmosphere for working, but the seating is mildly uncomfortable--table is too high relative to the benches & chairs for long-term laptopping.

Biggest negative: the carpet on the stairs up to the loft is really filthy, which is gross. They should just put in tile or hardwood.

It was a dark and stormy night in Venice, Italy, when my friend and I stumbled upon Caffe del Doge in a hidden plaza.  We sought refuge from the storm and we sought a nice steaming cup of Italian espresso.  Hearing that this was a much respected coffee brand, she bought a package to bring home.  Little did we know that a Caffe del Doge existed in the US (the only one in the States, mind you), right in the heart of downtown Palo Alto!

Great strong coffee, wonderfully thick hot chocolate, delicious menu of espresso/drip/mocha variations, and all in a tiny little cup and pricey price.  Worth the price, even on a stormy night?  Si, signore.

Caffe del Doge was very crowded today! I had to shift my purse aside on the way in just to avoid bumping people with it. The entrance is very narrow to begin with, and then there are chairs and tables lining it, so one dude was all sprawled out and almost had his legs blocking the door. Instead of moving as I walked by, he just watched me all creepy-like. I was like..."ahem..." No biggie though, I love a good Italian-style people-watching cafe! Today I was wearing a new dress (what with it being the Lord's day and all, no matter where I go I like to be looking nice on a Sunday) and had just gotten a rose petal-colored mani/pedi across the street at Michael Lucich (review to follow), so while I felt like a super hottie, I also felt very conspicuous and "watched" on my way in. This I did not like, but it's certainly not the fault of Caffe del Doge. I blame the dress :)

Anyhow, as a result I simply wanted to retreat to a lone table, savor my latte and raspberry tart, and enjoy the new pink organizer I just bought for myself. It has a section for books, movies, vacation plans, fitness routines, etc. so I was busy filling all these in :-) My very favorite thing about Caffe del Doge is that, no matter how crowded it is on a Sunday afternoon, there is always a spot where you can be alone. I quickly purchased my sustenance and hurried upstairs, where I had as much open space and quiet as I wanted. The raspberry tart was completely drool-worthy, with a sweet and soft sugary crust and a raspberry filling that tasted like a sugary raspberry jam pudding. The latte hit the spot, and I loved the tall glass with the extra-long spoon! With a couple of brown sugar cubes, it was perfect. Just what I wanted on Sunday afternoon.

It was a little hot inside, and especially upstairs, but I would rather be hot than cold, and to be honest I secretly appreciate a lack of air-conditioning on a hot day. I hate being cold inside where there's no sunshine to make up for it, and I'd rather bask in stuffy warmth than have some cold air blowing on me.

Cafe del Doge is a lovely cafe, very warm and comfortable, although it's a little out of my price range to make a regular thing of it. I'll save it for special occasions...such as the post mani/pedi Sunday afternoon on which I purchase a new pink planner and I'm dying to flip through it, or the summer afternoon meeting up with a friend who you know you'll end up gabbing with for like 3 hours. Plus one star for location alone...across from fro-yo, Border's, and a nail spa! If you haven't yet strolled University Avenue, now's the time to do it!

Really good coffee drinks and the chocolate drinks are sinfully rich and thick. One of the best coffee spots in Palo Alto. A little tight on space and folks settle in to work, so it can be hard to get a seat sometimes.

This is the place which made me start drinking coffee in US.
Yes, I never drank coffee in this country unless I needed a wake up boost before this cafe opened.
Now , since they are 2 blocks from my home, I'm in danger of becoming coffee addict. The only hope is that their thick hot chocolate (Robusta el Cuchio?) is another one of a kind on this continent. Nice selection of loose leaf teas also helps.
I'm a big fan of Premium Cappuccino, but there is also a selection of fancy coffee drinks. All worth trying at least ones and a nice topic for a first date (I guess :).
Summary:

Coffee: basic espresso is good, which is a sign of a good coffee place. (Again: here is the ONLY place in US I can drink espresso and not become sick to my stomach). So from here you can go and chose any coffee drink you fancy at the moment. You are safe. Mostly. Sometimes new barista or the machine acts out and spoils your coffee. Ask for a replacement. It's no problem.

Deserts are great. Personal favorites: orange chocolate tart, pear tart, and of course, croissants. It's the closest thing to French croissants I got outside of France.

Food: I never tried it till friend came to town and decided to have a breakfast here. They got huge plates of tomato & mozzarella and prosciutto&melone. Pouuurfect!

Alcohol: I 'm not much of a bar crawler, but it looks like with closing time at 1pm, Cafe Del Doge could be the pace! Spritz, Proseco and good selection of wines - why not?

Public: all local Europeans are here. What other recommendation do you need?!
:)

Before Cafe del Doge opened, its location used to house a coffee shop that we really liked. We were therefore more than a bit curious when we heard the coffee shop had closed and a gleaming temple to coffee had opened in its place.

Walking into the place, we noticed that the new coffee shop had retained the quirky floor spacing of the old place. We quickly found a spot on the coffee bar and ordered our cappuccino. While waiting for our order, we spied one of the baristas working on some printouts describing coffee making methodology. Note: the barista looked like he was a Stanford student doing homework:

Wife to barista: Are you studying for a position here?
Barista: No, I'm just updating our notes.
Wife: Oh, what are these notes?
Barista: These notes will help new baristas become acquianted with the nuances of coffee making here.
Wife: Does everyone have to study them?
Barista: Of course. We take our coffee very seriously here.
Wife: How about the barista over there? Has he studied these?
Barista: Him? He's one of our more experienced baristas. I trained him.

At that moment, the other barista comes by with my wife's cappuccino. On top was a beautiful rosetta leaf pattern. Somewhat impressed, my wife decides to take the cup to an out of the way corner of the place so we could privately admire the work of art.

Wife takes a first sip...wow! What a nice foam!
Second sip...wow! Great coffee!
Third sip...wow! I think you should get your own. I ain't sharing with you.

One more awesome coffee house in downtown Palo Alto.

Having just moved up into Mountain View in March, I'm still getting a tour of various places to go courtesy of my friends. Elea C was nice enough to show me Caffe del Doge, and it's become my favorite coffee shop for working, despite Red Rock and Dana St being in walking distance from my house.

The mocha here is best described as rich melted chocolate meets coffee IN YOUR MOUTH. And their espresso is perfect. Everything about it matches what I remember from Italy. I couldn't be happier. The prices are good for what you're getting as well. It's about $4 for the mocha, which is towards the more expensive end of their drinks. Espresso is under $2, and I've even watched as they remade it because THEY felt it was too bitter. (I thought it was already awesome, and then they were unhappy with it and went and made it awesome-er.)

If you're planning on coming here to work, be prepared to shark a table. It's been crowded every time I've been here, and chair space is limited. Sadly, the tables don't really lend themselves to sharing with strangers... or maybe the people of Palo Alto just don't get that part, I'm not sure. Either way, it's narrow and deep, and it will definitely feel a bit cramped when it's crowded. Just be patient and a table will open up.

Their hours are also wonderful. You just don't find places this awesome open this late (11p on a Sunday) anywhere else.

After 10 years I had almost forgotten what an italian-style cafe was like until I stumbled upon Caffe del Doge. They're originally based in Venice, Italy, but they recently opened this new store in Palo Alto. If you would like to evade from the typical reality of California-based coffee houses, this place is for you (not cheap though, you're warned!).

May sound cliche, but walking past that entrance door was like taking a giant leap across the Atlantic Ocean to safely land in San Marco Square in Venice!!! It felt just like home, including the unncessary lack of air conditioning which forced me to knock one star off my review. My iced coffee, served in a martini glass was classy, decadent, and delicious, and the ricotta filled croissant was to die for.

Give it a try, and let me know how you liked it.

in my epicurean adventures during my lunch break i dodged in this joint and came to find a great find!  I had a cup of java and these things called bombolinis...YUM!  I guess they have been in business for such a very long time and they pride themselves as philosophers when come to pouring the best brew around.  in their own words "coffee is a platonic academy...where no lessons are taught but where one learns to socialize and to be enchanted. One can chat or gossip but is is forbidden to preach, lecture or instruct."   Anyways i could see myself being a regular here and more updated reviews to come. yayy. 4/5 judochops.. hiyaa!

So no chocospice in the summer "because it melts during shipment."  Whatev.  So I tried like all of the other chocolatey "ciocolatta" thingies.  No chocospice quality awesomeness but one is close.  Rundown:

- Tenera in tazza (sp?) - GOOD hot chocolate.
- Robusta in tazza (sp?) - Very very espresso-ey.  In fact more coffee than chocolate flavor here and you should skip it

- Tenera cappucino (sp?) - Thicker hot chocolate - forgot
- Robusta cappucino (sp?) - Thicker espresso-ey one - forgot

- Tenera mouse - Super thick hot chocolate - yummy and simple.
- Robusta mouse- Super thick espresso based hot chocolate - now this one IS a winner - not so excessively coffee like, generally awesome, rich, with that kick of coffee flavor.

Their $1 Chocolates in the thing by the cash register:

The broken candy bar looking one: Um, very dark with hints of DIRT.  Yes it tastes like potting soil smells.  But not in the I'm gonna wretch kind of way.  More of an earthy red wine kind of way.  OK, Bill, it tastes like dirt not earthiness.

The "dark wrapper" square one: Tastes like hazelnut flavored chalk with hints of chocolate.  Maybe I'll appreciate it when I'm older and richer.

The "classic" light stripe on dark wrapper one: Tastes like hazelnut flavored silky chocolate - well done!  1 for 3.

Snobby, so Palo Alto, European, but as much as I hate some of its aspects, I keep coming back.  I don't like studying here because the guy walks around pressuring you to finish your coffee and will ask you if you want more--sometimes even when there are extra tables, but it's a great place to go with someone and enjoy your cup of coffee.  I absolutely love the expresso, and that is what keeps me coming back.  When I want to treat myself to good coffee, I come here.  I stopped by the one in Venice and it's just as good.  I guess the Italians know their coffee...Also a great place to go hang out (if they don't kick you out) if you want to hear different languages.

I'm picky when it comes to my coffee (read,' complete snob') so I was a little hesitant when I saw this place. Perhaps it was the Italian names for everything, a little to reminiscent of Starbucks. Maybe it was the fact that they took pride in the fact that their beans were roasted halfway across the world, but something rubbed me the wrong way. Still, I needed a coffee fix, so in I went. They pull a good shot, and arn't nearly as expensive as their level of pretension would indicate. I do wonder what the different classes of beans really mean ( I was tempted to try a flight, but didn't, next time I guess).

Now, if only they realized that freshness of roast matters more than location, and that a roaster in Palo Alto would do better than one in Italy.

The World According to Noelle
~Allergic Girl's Guide to Life~

"Still my favorite place for coffee in the bay area." Noelle W.

Came here twice this week. After a delightful dinner at Patxi's Pizza with my friend Carole we headed here for a cup o joe. Carole had a latte and I had the Cremino. The Cremino consists of your choice of dark chocolate, white chocolate, or caramel poured into a skinny glass about 2.5 inches high, a shot of espresso, whipped cream and shaved chocolate on top. The Cremino is in one word: HEAVENLY. Just yesterday, after dinner with my friend Sue Ann @ Madison and Fifth we came here for my coffee fix. Sue Ann had a regular coffee (which she added cream and sugar to @ the coffee bar area) and a croissant. I had a latte and a slice of the coffee pound cake. The pastries are not tasty at all and overpriced. They offer free wifi. There are several areas to sit- outside, inside and on the second floor. Do note that its rather toasty on the second floor. I love coffee and I'm a firm believer that Caffe del Doge is the best in the Bay Area!

Noelle's Notes
My favorite coffee shop!
For better desserts head
to Coupa Cafe or Satura Cakes.

If you find yourself in downtown Palo Alto (such as it is) and need a great coffee in a hip setting, this is it. The upstairs seating area, if a spot is open, is an ideal place to read, check email, sip your espresso, or talk with a good friend (or new acquaintance). Expect some long lines and black-clad staff to be too busy to help you decipher the menu. Just trust your instincts on this one and have a good time. If you aren't into the scene, appreciate the solitary pleasure of a well-made cup of North Italian style coffee.

Before anyone gets all up in arms about this 2-Star review, just simmer down nah

Met a friend hadn't seen in forever, down in Palo Alto & a nice coffee seemed like the perfect way to catch up.  Walk into Caffe del Doge & the place is absolutely hopping - tons of people w/ screaming kids running all over the place.  Guess we got there before a soccer game or something but it was brutal.

The coffees looked amazing & it was hard to choose but I decided to go for something unique & not that I could just get anywhere.....we're talking the Espresso Marco Polo (Spiced espresso with cinnamon, ginger or cardamon, topped w/ spiced cream)

I admit I read the description incorrectly b/c I thought I'd be getting all 3 spices but apparently you only get one & they mean it.  When the barista asked me which ONE I wanted & I asked if I could get all 3, she said * no *.  ( Boo! )  So I chose the Cardamon.

Well, 1 spice or 3, whatever.....I'm imagining a warm & spicy coffee to really drive the morning chilliness away. Reality sets in when it arrives in a martini glass & it's cold.  Now I don't care that it was in a martini glass but I WAS expecting a warm coffee drink - that tasted like coffee.

But alas, all I taste is cold heavy cream.  I see the coffee layered in the glass so I know it's there but it is so overpowered by the cream that nothing else gets through but cold, tongue-coating, non-spicey cream... and I'm a big fan of cream so this is saying something when even *I* think it's too much.  Big disappointment!

My friend got a basic Latte (said was yummy) & wish I had stuck to the simple......

So 2 stars for a disappointing coffee experience.  I'm completely willing to give Caffe del Doge another try & will update my review but for now, this is all I got to go on & meh - I've experienced better

Oh man, places like Caffe del Doge make me not mind living in the States. How did I ignore this place for so long? Since checking it out for the first time last week, I've made up excuses to drive to Palo Alto on three separate occasions, just to go to this place. (Ok, so I wanted to see a movie too). Love!

The coffee beans they use here are imported from Italy, so they're legitimately good. And light roast, too! :) The tea is good (I think from Samovar, which is a great company). Cute teapots, cups, and little trays as well.
The hot chocolate? Well what can I say about that, that hasn't already been said? And the fancy martini glass drinks? Well, that's so snooty it hurts (aka, hooray!!).

A final note:
I got a Cappuccino Veneziano and it was very tasty, but I also appreciated the home-made whipped cream. At first I was startled by how mildly sweet it was (I'm used to Reddi-Whip at most places, what can I say?). A second later, though, I was used to it and very happy at the subtle flavor.

An overall win! Go Caffe del Doge! :)

YUM!  I stopped in with a friend after brunch and for the first time in many months had a coffee drink - the barista was very helpful and recommended an iced drink.  I can't remember what it was called but it is a double shot shaken with ice, served in a martini glass and delicious.  Fancy pants!

It's pricey, but the quality and careful presentation are worth it!  Way better value than Starbucks any day!!

The space is tiny and narrow, but seems to have plenty of seating between the two floors.  The bathroom looks nice and is clean.  I loved the atmosphere, orange walls, posters of coffee and Italy, Roman Holiday playing on the flatscreen.  It is a busy cafe, but even with a bunch of people in line it was still quiet enough to have a conversation on a Sunday afternoon.

We spent HOURS there, chatting, enjoying a red velvet cake from Satura and never once felt pressured to leave.  What a great way to spend a lazy afternoon :)

Caffé del Doge is probably the most authentic Italian espresso bar on the Peninsula. Doge is the word for the leader of Venice, from back when Venice was an independent republic (and usually at war with the republic of Genoa, requiring many battle-worthy shots of espresso).

If you've been to Venice - or anywhere in Italy today, actually - then you know that espresso bars are an indispensable part of Italian life. It is simply not possible to soak-up "La Dolce Vita" without sipping a dark, rich espresso every morning.

I've explored espresso bars everywhere (part of my duty to humanity), and I'd have to say that Caffé del Doge is just about as close to the real deal as anyplace this side of Rome.

I'd give them five stars, except that they actually serve drip coffee (no self-respecting espresso bar in Italy would ever serve drip coffee. If you insist they will serve you an "Americano", and then mutter to themselves, wondering why Americans want to take a perfectly good shot of espresso and then water it down).

Despite that one stoop to accommodate low-brow Americans, Caffé del Doge is pretty much as good as it gets. A delicious little slice of authentic Italy, in downtown Palo Alto.

Woh doggy!!! The double espresso nero was extra dark and strong. Add half a teaspoon of brown sugar, stir and voila', perfecto. The toasted ham and cheese croissant was good as well. Not Bouchon Bakery good but plenty tasty.

=)

I'm here almost every weekend, sitting at the tiny tables right outside. I love the cappuccinos! The menu can be confusing, but I don't even look at it anymore. Just ask the friendly people behind the counter and they can tell you what to order.

When I worked in the RC (hey don't judge) this was my transfer stop between the Fremont park-n-ride [for the Dumbarton Bridge bus] and the train I needed to get to Redwood City.

This place was a great respite between in walking distance from the transfer station with awesome coffee just like you get in Italy. Hell they even have branches IN Italy! so they are the real deal. In any event they also serve some of the best local desserts many from organic purveyors.

It's like taking a trip to Italy without the crappy long-ass plane ride.

With their profits they also support programs directed towards underprivileged children, especially those of persons who work on coffee plantations they get their beans from. They provide scholarships for these children targeting the illiteracy problems and illegal street work.

One of the best coffee I have tasted so far. Very interesting flavors, each flavor is like a new experience.

The serving staff is really nice, takes a lot of patience in explaining the roastings, how they brew and which flavor will go with what dessert.

The food is fingerlicious.

My Latte was perfect and so pretty!

I walked in and knew that I would have to pick something else than a Venti Vanilla Latte. I ordered a latte and assumed they didn't have my vanilla syrup:) And yes, I was right. The drink didn't need it!

I sat down at the window seats and enjoyed my latte. As I looked around, I was very comfortable and relaxed because the place was so nice. good music and lots of people to watch!

I have to admit that I always walked by this place and never gave it a second thought.  NEVER AGAIN!

We came here after dancing at Melt to get coffee. My friends told me that this place is the best in Palo Alto. Major points for being open to 1 am.

Anyways, I got a cappuccino and pistachio biscotti. Then we watched the bartistas make our drinks and put heart designs on the foam on top. Nice! After putting some sugar, we headed upstairs to relax and enjoy our drinks.

Yes, this is the best cappuccino in the Bay Area I ever had. If I'm in Palo Alto, I'm never going to Starbucks or Peet's for my espresso drinks. I'm interested in how their tea lattes taste like. I don't recall seeing if they have any on their menu, but I'm definitely coming back again!

Caffè del Doge... why are you so good? It sure seems like everything here is good: desserts, coffee, tea, etc. I even like the tables they have here! So cute...

The place can easily get crowded because it is one of the better options on Uni Ave in Palo Alto, but if you are grab a seat, definitely stick around and have a cuppa. Mmm yum. It's also a bit pricey, but maybe that's expected over in fancypants Palo Alto? I don't know that I could come here regularly for a drink, but I would certainly come here every so often to indulge in some hot choco or some other ridiculously decadent dessert.
