I was blown away by this place.  I had wine and some appetizers.  I ordered the manila clams, calamari, and the smoked salmon spread.  The clams were amazing!  Cooked perfectly and with no seafood taste/smell!  The broth the clams were cooked in was rich and light!  You could taste the broth in the clams.  The broth was worth dipping your bread into!  The calamari was a little salty for my personal taste, but was delicious as well.  One of the better ones I have had in Eugene.  I was not as impressed with the smoked salmon spread.  Salmon is my favorite fish so I kind of have high expectations for it.  I will not be ordering that again.  I also ordered the Riesling and it went well with the appetizers I ordered.

The service was pretty good.  One of the better ones in Eugene.  Our server was pretty attentive and friendly.

Cafe Zenon can be a little pricey, but it's worth it on those occasions you're willing to splurge a little bit.  I will be back to try the entrees and hopefully it lives up to it's impressive appetizers!

I went into Cafe Zenon with high expectations, and perhaps my rating is unfair due to those.

I ordered a barbecue pork sandwich, and being from the south, again perhaps I was unfair to do that.  I didn't really enjoy my meal.  My dining companions seemed to all enjoy their meals, and in fact, I wished I had ordered the grilled chicken sandwich.  That looked amazing.

My lemonade was horribly tart, and I had to put tons of sugar in it (which I don't normally do with house lemonades).  It was all lemon and no "ade."

Our waiter was awkward.  The place was loud (which is a common complaint).  While I might go back if someone else REALLY wants to eat there, I probably won't go back on my own accord.

    In a nutshell:
    - Great staff 5/5
    - Located at the corner of a diverse area with a starbucks, a pizza place, thai restaurant, and a bakery near by 5/5
    - Nice interior but I personally like where Im eating to be lit up instead of being dark 4/5

    - Bakery is not so great, can get rich to where you have a sugar overload and a diabetes attack 1/5
    - Pricing is on the high side 1/5

I went to this place twice on different days just to be sure my first experience wasn't because it was a bad day.

Im not a fan of their salad for sure after their Zenon Curried Chicken Salad. If you asked me, the name sounded SOOOOOOOO much better than the actual dish itself. It was basically $11 for a salad that was drenched in their mayo sauce, bite size chicken, apples, nuts, and some herbs and a few fruits in the mix. Mayo and fruits/nuts? Ehh I think I wasn't reading the menu carefully enough. The server that day who was helping me was really helpful and kind so I gave them an extra star for that

Another time I went there I had their lemon chocolate tart and their Zenon Chocolate Cake (recommended by the man server helping me who was really nice at helping me describe each of the cakes to full details). Their price was on the pricier side since a slice a cake and a thing of tart was each $7 a piece. The tart was really good the first bite but by the time you get half way through, it's just too rich in tasting that it makes you feel a little overloaded with sugar.
Their chocolate cake was quite decent but it's not one of those cakes that makes you linger and craving for more. I found it quite interesting how I left my cake at work for 3 days in the refrigerator and when I came back to eat it, it was still good like I just bought it so that should tell you something about the quality.

I think the time I went could be a factor as to why I didn't like it because I've went there both during the afternoon menu.

Overall I think it's a place where some people might love it and some people will wonder why the hell did I just spend that much money on something I didn't like and tossed in the trash :)

Since when in America does a restaurant not have Ranch dressing. Well all you ranch haters are in luck here! As I was so delightfully told we don't have rance dressing for your salad, you must have the dressing we provide, all in all the experience was not bad. The Reuben was quite delicious and their desserts looked fantastic.
I was by far the youngest person in here by about two decades. Not sure where I go from here with this place.

We made an orgy out of brunch at Cafe Zenon this morning.  It was good.

I snatched a slice of Victoria's waffle, with almonds in the batter and cherry compote & real whipped cream on top.  She grabbed some of my Eggs Sardou - like Eggs Benedict but with creamed spinach and artichoke hearts beneath the poached eggs and tomato Hollandaise and parmegan on top.  We each nibbled on Nicole's slice of ham & aspargus quiche, and we each found it to be the best quiche we'd had.  Eric ordered Aebleskivers (Danish pancake bites) and we dug into his balls.  I stole a piece of his bacon; it was smokey, salty and perfectly-grilled.  Things got very adult and very delicious.  I wanted a cigarette when we were done.

Zenon is my vote for best brunch in town.

Twenty years ago, Zenon was Eugene's go-to for consistently well-executed dishes: unique appetizers, Mediterranean entrees and the most irresistible dessert counter in all the land.   It was loud with the conversation of impressed diners.

Now, it's looking desperate.  Four tables going at 6:45pm was not a good sign.  One entree is under $20 - not a problem if you can meet expectations.  There's a happy hour promotion scribbled above the window into the bar and kitchen area, where the dishwasher stood spinning a dish rack (as flirtatiously as one could spin a dish rack) in front of a female customer at the bar.  "Fine Dining" it says on the website.

The rib eye was a large attractive cut, dusted with rub and properly cooked.  At $27, it should be, but not accompanied by uneven mashed potatoes and (really?) the center cut of a corn cob...no stick, though.  I began wondering how other fine dining establishments serve their corn cobs.  On the spine of a deadly sea creature?  Paris Hilton's barrette?  I don't know.

The lamb tagine was tender but under-seasoned.  For a dish that's usually slow-cooked in a pot, it had virtually no sauce.  The greens were excellent, but the couscous just average: not dry, but flavorless.

Finally, a fillet of beef with "tomato demiglace".  What on Earth is liquid smoke doing in a demiglace?  It tasted like someone extracted the sugar from a small puddle of KC Masterpiece.  The side was a brick of au gratin potatoes.  Yes, you have used a mandoline to create a 12-story starch monument.  "My God, it's full of stars".

The dessert counter still has the Zenon chocolate cake, but few other choices.  The lemon-poppyseed and Hawaiian wedding cake were just okay.  The "Wild" blueberry crisp was a disaster, served napalm-hot with a shoveling of broken oatmeal shingles.

I don't know what happened here, but it's too bad.  This was actually my 3rd visit since the takeover, going back a few years.  Each visit worse than the last.  Shrink the portions, shrink the menu and bring the prices back to something that can sustain a following.

Went here last night with the boyfriend, wanted to try somewhere we haven't been in Eugene yet, and their menu looked good. Definitely not crowded since it was a Tuesday night so we had great service. Had the calamari as an appetizer which was pretty big and tasted great. A little spicy because it had sliced jalapenos in the mix, but the asian-y sweet dipping sauce was great with it. For entrees I went with the duck breast on  pumpkin and pear risotto with apple cider type reduction and OMG the risotto was seriously the best ive ever had. the duck was cooked to perfection as well. The bf had the pappardelle with lamb shoulder in tomato-green olive rustic sauce. It was very good as well, but the sauce/lamb mixture was not mixed in with the pasta. It was also pretty cold in the restaurant, but overall I enjoyed the rest of the dining experience and will be back for 1/2 price bottles of wine for happy hour on tuesdays!

    Dined here  2007 - 2008

This is a great restaurant with concentration on first impression, service and damn good food.  I've dined here at least 10 times; and had hubby pick up the BEST Carrot Cake I've ever had, during my pregnancy, at least 10 times.
We've had seafood, meat, salads, breakfast, all of it and can't recall a bad meal.  The mussels were extra special as was the meat and cheese plate.

My only BIG disappointment with this "kid friendly" town restaurant is they have ZERO places where you can change a little ones diaper.  Not a changing station to be found on the WHOLE block!

Business owners wake up!  People need to change diapers with ease .... otherwise we go elsewhere!

Received a nice note from the current (May 2009 - present) manager and am pleased to report that the charge to 86 onions is no longer en force. To quote:

"During our opening months, we learned a lot from our mistakes.  You will never again be charged to omit something from a dish. The substitution charge is meant to be used when a dish is altered in a way that it costs more."

So, that's good. I will also note that the price of my veg sandwich was $8 ($9 with the subst. charge), so the $14 I quoted included tip and a tea.

I hope Zenon keeps on truckin', because we really need good spots downtown and their real estate is primo. Maybe sometime soon, I will venture back for dessert and card-playing on a warm evening.

I was wavering between 2 and 3 stars, because our experience here was quite a mixed bag. In the end, I gave it 3 stars because I'd come back for the desserts if I was ever in Eugene again, which isn't likely.

Apparently, the restaurant recently changed its menu (although I think it can't have been that recent, because the menus look tattered, greasy, and beat up). At least, the pretentious waiter kept insisting it was a new menu, most likely to excuse his ignorance. He read the specials robotically off his notes because he didn't know them.

When I asked what cheeses were on our cheese plate, he curtly replied that he didn't know, and blamed it again on the new menu. He did go and find out, but seemed none too happy about it. Then he insisted that one of the cheeses was brie, even though it was hard and sharp, and I know brie to be soft and mild. The cheese plate came with an enjoyable selection of cheeses.

The BF and I split the eggplant fettucine, which was pretty good except for the generous portion of burnt, hard eggplant.  And the steep price of $16, which it wasn't worth. The noodles were surprisingly soft, the way I like them. It was decent, but not that great.

After we paid and we were leaving, the dessert case called out to me and I decided to get a slice of cake for later. We waited in front of the dessert case for quite a while before a waiter asked if we needed help. When we said we wanted to get a dessert, he told us to wait and did not come back. Finally, a bartender helped us out. He was the nicest, most knowledgeable man in the joint (which seems to staff only men).

I asked him to tell me about the Vanilla Bavarian and the Tres Leches. He said the first was very light, and the second very rich and dense and soaked in three kinds of milk. I had the Tres Leches and it was delectable, creamy, rich, sweet, and more than big enough to share. Not very affordable at $7 a slice, but worth it for special occasions.

This is the place my Mother and I eat when I come to town.  We have always had good service and very good wine.  My Mother usually has the Zenon chicken salad.  It is a good combination of salad and fruit.  it is always good.  Today I had a Thai curry; it was a vegetarian dish that had good heat, but not too hot.  it was very satisfying.  We each had a nice glass of wine to go with the meal.  As usual, the service was great.  We will go again.

Cafe Zenon has been a favorite since I was a student and ate there occasionally as a rare treat. I was pleased that it continues to go strong. My friend and I had breakfast there this summer after the Oregon Country Fair. My vegetarian Eggs Benedict was delicious! Since I've been eating vegetarian, Eggs Benedict is one of the few dishes that sometimes makes me wistful for eating meat, and the vegetarian version left me missing nothing. Deliciously creamy Hollandaise with spinach, artichokes and tomatoes and a perfect poached egg.

Zenon has always been a Eugene must for me. It used to be a triple header which included dinner, breakfast and pastries to go from their bakery next door. I miss the latter two but am happy that I can still enjoy a great dinner here. Recently enjoyed the Caesar, the wild salmon entree special with roasted yams and the pear salad for dessert- all shared by 2. Wonderful service by our waitress who informed us that, yes, it was under new ownership but still with some of the original chefs. That must be one of the reasons why I am still in love.

I took my mother to Zenon on a Sunday evening to celebrate her 60th birthday, and had an enchanting meal. The service, food, and ambiance were all delightful.

We began our meal with a salad that had warm chevre, blueberry dressing, toasted hazelnuts, and amazing sweet cornbread on the side. It was sooooo good.

I had the red snapper, which was perfectly cooked and accompanied by a lovely chutney, rice, and lentil balls. It was much more than I would have expected and made a good lunch the following day. My mother had the steak and found it to be excellent as well.

Our waiter, who was perhaps the best waiter I've ever had the pleasure of dining with, made many thoughtful suggestions that made our dinner that much more enjoyable. He made sure to take our order before a nearly party of 17 placed theirs, so as to prevent a long wait for our food. When we were undecided about ordering wine, he suggested an excellent glass to share, which he poured in two glasses. At the end of our meal, when we were too full for dessert, he brought us a little sliver of cake, insisting that we must because he knew it was my mother's birthday. It was the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Zenon, like so many places and things in Eugene, is a love-it or hate-it proposition.  This confounds me, because, as a Eugenean, I try not to hate anything.

    I can't say I love it, though.

In any other place, Zenon would be where you go to people-watch and be people-watched.  Downtown Eugene doesn't lend itself to that, though.  The only people you can watch at Zenon are bankers and attorneys.  Why not just watch paint dry?  Paint has better fashion sense, is more animated and not so full of bullshit.

As a restaurant, Zenon has never had much going on.  The food isn't terrible, but it is terribly unremarkable.  The service is good, but good service in a just-okay restaurant is like getting a handjob...from your sister...while wearing a couple of extra-thick Trojans.  It might be minimally satisfying, but it's not exciting...and you're sure not gonna brag about it afterwards.

Oh, I know, that's gauche.  Please forgive me.  Why would I be so crude while reviewing a restaurant?  Perhaps it is because I couldn't help injecting what Zenon so desperately needs:  A little attitude, some sense of culinary adventure, a crass joke, a drunk piano player, or even just a rude waiter or three, for God's sake!  Anything, anything at all to make it something other than the pleasant but fatally boring polyester three-piece suit of a place it is.

Go, by all means, but bring a book.  Preferably one with a stash compartment.  You'll need something to give your visit a little pizazz.

I've only been there for breakfast but been quite a few times. Their corned beef hash is the best I've ever had, absolutely amazing. The hollandaise sauce is pretty good too, which is always a risky thing to order and rarely good if you don't know the place.

The only con I can think of is the noise, it gets really loud when the place is packed.

Zenon is just good.  I mean, really good.  Especially the desserts (oh, the desserts), but everything else too.  Great entrees, great apps, incredible desserts, solid wine list, it's just fantastic all the way around.

In other news, Zenon also holds the distinction of being absolutely the only restaurant where I have had to physically wrestle one of the chefs into submission in the kitchen (this is not a joke).  It was awesome.

I can't stop thinking about all the amazing desserts I had here! We saved room so that we could try 2 different ones. All of the waitstaff were super friendly, conversational & professional, and knew their shit. Which is really nice. Extra points for thinking me and my honey were on a first date- aawww- and not because we looked awkward or uncomfortable...right? Hahaha

But the best part was the memory I took home of the couple seated next to us....who were discussing their impending divorce. The guy had a coke habit (maybe I'm being silly but I didn't realize they really had that in Oregon- mmmm....organic coke? I was shocked. Moving on)
And she just kept repeating "I just want to be taken care of."     bwaaahahahahaha

So now this is my tagline whenever I'm being obnoxious/ overdemanding/ petulant.  You can use it if you'd like. Just make sure you say it with complete indignation.
Oh, and Zenon had really good desserts the end.

This used to be an outstanding Eugene staple.  It's always been noisy, but that was part of the "vibe".  Unless it's changed recently, the menu is basically the same as it's been forever (except for the sad loss of the Pacific Northwest Caesar Salad which was outstanding) and the once to die for, quality desserts have gone seriously down hill.  I noticed the downhill slide following the sale by the (original?) owners (both named "David" as I recall).

The saving grace is the service is still pretty good and the food is good.  But, I would go to Sweet Life for desserts after the show.

The food is so-so for the price. I have only had one or two dishes that stood out and have been there many times. The ONLY good thing about Zenon is the baked goods, so their baker is awesome. The management needs improvement, the wait staff tries there best under said management, and it is NOT a friendly place to bring children. It is always cold and there is really nothing unique about Zenon. When I was still attempting to give them a chance, I had my wedding rehearsal dinner there. We were a party of 30 and the manager wasn't even there!! She knew months in advance of this party and knew her staff had NEVER catered to such a large group. Needless to say, the food took FOREVER to come out, even with one chef completely devoted to our group. While we were waiting, the would not bring us bread because they said there was not enough for us (??????), as they were still operating normal bussiness inside. We did not get our drinks in any kind of timely manner and as a result many of our guests had to go in and wait at the bar to order. The food was alright, but many folks were not pleased with it's quality and the service was horrible. I felt quite bad about my husbands father ahving to pay what he did for that dinner. I do not believe it was worth it. Several of my friends and family at the dinner are in the food indistry, some of them restaurant owners, and they agreed with me. I will not be reurning to Zenon unless it is for a REALLY strong craving for one of those tartlets.

If you've been watching a lot of Food Network and think you've just gotten too darn sophisticated for Carrow's, this is the place for you.

Like some college freshman who puts on a beret and suddenly starts speaking with a vaguely European accent, Zenon tries really hard with the "big-city" act.

Pretty expensive for the quality of food.

Enjoyed brunch at the "new" Zenon very much.  The menu is expanded and difficult to choose from.  The frittata with linguine, cured meats and fresh herbs was delicious, as was my omelette with fried oysters, andouille sausage and bell peppers was great with a serving of their house made hot sauce.  I could drink that stuff!  The oysters were small, fresh and perfectly fried.  My husband's red flannel hash was a generous portion, but not as good at the Rabbit's version.  Like the "old" Zenon, every plate comes with fruit and you can get wonderful bread with jam and butter upon request.

I've had lunch twice at the "new" Zenon and enjoyed it very much, too.

I'd heard Zenon mentioned a fair bit around Eugene, and finally went for lunch with my wife.  The short story is: I would not choose to go here again, but if a group was going, I would eat.  Why?...

First, we didn't have dessert, but that wouldn't be enough to give a better rating anyway.  I haven't been for breakfast but had heard that was good.  So, our lunch: average.  My wife had corn on the cob, which was totally overcooked, and a salad (field greens and chevre) which I tried as well, and it was just quite average, and the goat cheese was actually not great (the source of it (Cypress Grove) normally is, so not sure what's up there).  I had the Cat Tail Creek lamb ribs and a bowl of the celeriac soup.  The soup was ok, but kind of bland (this is a soup I normally am a fan of, this one was weak).  The ribs were ok, but a bit overcooked and somewhat tougher than I'd expect, especially given they (supposedly) came from the outstanding Cat Tail Creek!

They were also slow to give us our bill, and sort of bland service.  So, again, at this point, I'd never suggest going here, but could eat the food if it had been a group decision type of thing (although I'd suggest other places).

My husband and I stopped here for dessert while on a road trip through Oregon. I had the tres leches cake and he had the sesame cheesecake.

The staff was very friendly, coffee was strong, and the tres leches cake was huge and delicious!

I went here for lunch and the menu is pretty small unless you want an egg dish (they are mainly brunch and dinner I guess)....just a few salads, no sandwiches.
I wish I had read the yelp reviews before going here and I would have come back for dessert.....oh-well.

We lucked into the brunch menu on Saturday. Their homemade desserts in the display case to on the right as you enter made me pause (I suggest you do the same). All sorts of tortes, pies and cakes such as the white and chocolate mousse cake which doesn't actually have any cake - just mousse. (I was tempted by that one.)

They make their own pastrami and chipped beef (my friend enjoyed the corned beef hash and eggs). I had Eggs Benedict with creamed spinach and artichoke hearts - a perfect combo of flavors. Totally delish! Then we split a piece of homemade cherry pie - whole cherries instead of gooey cherry-flavored filling you find at so many other places. Paired with a double espresso it was the perfect ending to the meal.

A special thanks to Chris who gave us perfect directions back to I-5.

Stopped there for desert on the way to Portland and was very glad I did!  They serve some very good cakes!  It didn't hurt that all the bottled wine was half off, either.  The waitstaff was very attentive.

After self inflicted poisoning myself for the past two days eating fast food and really crappy room service, I decided to eat a decent meal.  I was heading off to Adam's Sustainable and it was closed fore lunch.  So I started walking down the street and I ran into Cafe Zenon.  Peeking inside I was immediately drawn to their awesome cake/dessert case.  They had this beautiful blueberry bread pudding in the case.   So I made a date with my dessert and sat down for lunch.  I ordered the spinach, goat cheese and crimini mushroom salad.   It was good and had plenty of cheese and mushrooms - very tasty.  I also tried the pork sandwich.  It was buttery and tender (although it was fried).  It was also very good.  But the highlight of my meal was the home fries (which came with the sandwich).  Normally I frown on home fries and love french fries.  But these home fries were PERFECT!!  Each morsel was crispy without being burnt or oily.  Lunch today was definitely a treat, although I will be back with customers next time.  The wait staff was very nice and accommodating.  I felt welcome eating alone in this place.  Sometimes servers are awkward with solo diners (I eat alone on business travel at least 25 times monthly), but my server was charming.  I appreciate that.  I was so into the home fries and sandwich that I totally forgot to order dessert!!!!!  Oh well, I will be back.

Had lunch there today. Had hoped it would be better under new ownership, but our service still stunk (that was the problem under old owner). Hasn't really changed. Food is good; service isn't. I had to go inside and tell our server we were ready to order (after waiting an indeterminable time), then had to go inside and tell him we were ready to pay. Disappointing. :(

    OBVIOUSLY NOT CLOSED!!!

Though I'd heard of this cafe many times while I lived in Eugene in 2007, I never had a chance to try the food. Walking around Saturday night, I passed by late at night as everyone seemed to be closing. After looking at menus, I returned to Cafe Zenon where I had a pasta dish that was very tasty. Though the cafe was filled with diners when I entered, by time I was served most of them were gone. The help was very attentive and polite, and never hurried me at all though it was obvious they were closing for the night. I looked at the framed landscape photography hanging on the walls which really added to the cafe's mood. A very nice place with lots of glass that I wouldn't like to be responsible for - maintenance or cleaning. I would definitely return if I ever passed through Eugene again! Street parking was easy at the late hour after 9pm...  a big change from what I am used to not having in big busy SF.

I had a delicious brunch at Cafe Zenon!  My food was actually cooked as I order, which in the past has been somewhat of a challenge.  I recommend any of the poached egg dishes.  They are fantastic! It is also a fantastic dinner date spot.  Great Northwest food in a European cafe type setting!

I had a great lunch here yesterday afternoon. We had friendly and attentive service, but our waitress wasn't overbearing. My toasted hazelnut salad with chevre and a raspberry vinaigrette was pretty damn good. I'll definitely be back.
