First time there. Read reviews so decided to check it out. Was really craving Indian food. I got the paneer makhani. Had better but not going to complain. Prices are about average for what you get. Next time I'm going to try the lunch buffet as it is only $10. Not much of a selection in it from what I saw, but you can't go wrong for that price.

Other items to try. Malai kofta and saag paneer.

Don't bother. With a great place like the Hopyard right next door I'd suggest heading there instead.

I'm a serious lover of Indian food and this place was soo disappointing. I'm used to the great quality of places like Breads of India or Bombay in walnut creek, but didn't want to make the drive in that direction since I was already in San Ramon. So a friend and I decided I give this place a shot. Bad idea.

We ordered the samosas, chicken tikka masala, and butter chicken meals. The food came quickly but was seriously subpar. The butter chicken tasted like a bowl of butter soup with some poor quality chicken bits thrown in. The tikka masala was watery, flavorless, and the chicken was of such low quality I wouldn't be surprised it was scraped out of a chicken nugget and thrown the bowl.

The only different between the meals and the a la carte items were some vegetables on the side. I took one bite of the veggies and spit it out in my napkin. Cold, mushy, with a very odd spice combination that represented something like a spicy cinnamon? Ew.

The guys behind the counter were so nice and personable. They were chatting and making jokes with my friend and I when they took our order and I hate to leave such a poor review.

Poor quality, poor flavor, way over priced. No thanks.

Ordered online. Such an ugly layout and a bit confusing but it was easier than calling in an order.

Got Chicken Tikka Masala - Medium - It was delicious. Smaller pieces of chicken than I'm used to, but a good amount of it. It came with plain naan, rice, and some other things here and there. Pretty good sized for the price. It was about a medium spicy level - although my boyfriend would disagree. He said it was actually quite spicy, but I didn't sense it.

Paneer Wrap - Mild - I wish there was more paneer in this dish. The wrap was tasty, albeit a big watery for some reason. Also, when we came home with our order it was the only thing that was cold. So, I had to heat it up in the microwave for a few seconds. It was pretty good despite its coldness and rather spicy. Boyfriend didn't finish the potatoes but I did and I liked it. I thought it had a good amount of spice but it wasn't "mildly" spiced.

Mango Lassi - I always get this whenever I eat Indian. Sadly, it was luke warm when I got it and not as thick as some other places. It was easily fixed with a few ice cubes and still delicious.

Verdict: I'd eat here again. Most definitely. There aren't that many great Indian places in Dublin/San Ramon and finding one like this is pretty amazing.

My co-worker turned me on to this place since we work right down the street. I wish she hadn't told me about it because now it's all I want! It's good food- not AMAZING but pretty dang good- I definitely crave it while at work. What really makes the restaurant is the owner. The guy is so friendly and truly cares about his customers and wants to make them happy. A friend of mine was unhappy her meal was way spicier that the cashier said it would be and the owner wrapped up her meal for her to take her to her husband, and recommended some items on the buffet and gave her a plate and said go for it! She hadn't even complained, he walks around and chats with his customers to make sure they are happy- awesome! With another friend he went over all the ingredients in many of the dishes to make sure she could eat them (since she was allergic to a lot of things), and he said he would take out anything she couldn't have and make the meal specially for her. This guy is good! He always remembers us which is so nice these days.
The buffet is only $10 and everything on the menu is reasonably priced and yummy I recommend to anyone I come across in the area!
There is a huge parking lot also and I never have to wait for a table at lunch time.

Excellent buffet and usually very good food. Occasionally inconsistent in terms of quality.

Overall this is one of the very few decent Indian food houses in the San Ramon area.

One favorite is the salmon tandoori special on the weekends.

What sounds like a fairly new annual tradition many local family members got together for a all-you-can-eat buffet followed by dancing to Indian music. We did not make it to midnight (old folks) and left the younger ones to enjoy themselves, but the food was excellent and the owners and staff were very accommodating and highly interested to make this experience a jolly one. For details on food see other previews  plan to pop in again for one of their lunch deals... Happy New Year!

The food was incredibly creamy (good for hubby, but a turn off to me).
The daal was not lentils it was basically a veggie curry, the samosas were okay, but the side of garbanzo beans served with the samosas was amazing. Main issue is that they dont have a standard menu of dishes to order from, instead they have specials. Being a vegetarian that doesnt like paneer, I was not able to get my standard veggie tika masala and aloo ghobi.

The people who work here are so friendly. The food is fantastic. My family loves the veggie wraps, pizza naan, chicken tikka masala and choley. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

The buffet is wonderful and fresh and we just enjoy going there.

There is ample parking in the front as well as in the back. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Most items on the menu are very good.  Chicken Wrap,  Paneer Wrap are perfect.  Traditional Indian dishes like Chole and chaat items are also very good.,  but little on the bland side.   Perhaps that better meets the liking of most customers.  I'll pass on the Chicken Pesto Nan.

Ever since this place opened, I keep giving it second chances. I think what happens is that enough time passes and I forget why I didn't want to go back. Well, I'm cementing my feelings in Yelp so I'll never forget.

This is one f those places where you place your order at the counter, and they bring your food to you. There's a big menu above the counter with pretty pictures. Mmm, there's a picture of a combination seekh and chicken kabob. "I'll have that." No? I can't have that? It's not on the menu! Well then why the $^¢& is there a picture of it on the menu? Are you deliberately taunting me? Ok, fine, I'll just have seekh kabob. And don't bother to offer me the combination that I want, that you tempt me with on your menu. I realize that would be difficult, what with no buttons for it on your cash register. Besides, I hate good customer service. Highly overrated.

7:40 - placed my order (the time is stamped on my receipt)

Seekh Kabob - $10.99 (a dollar higher than it is on the menu)
    Basmati Rice - $2.99
    Onion Naan - $3.99
    Total - $19.63 with tax

Wait. What? $19.63? Isn't this counter service? Ok, ok, I know - "service" is a bit of a strong word.

7:54 - my naan arrives at my table

8:10 - my dinner arrives exactly 30 minutes after I ordered

My naan is cold. It's been sitting there for 16 minutes. I have no silverware and no drink. Oh yeah, I forgot -- I have to take care of myself.

I confess the kabob was good. But I didn't like the naan. Not only was it cold, but the texture of the bread was too dense. I eat a LOT of Indian food, and my experience has been that naan is usually lighter. This naan was also very spicy; I like very spicy food, but not spicy bread, especially when the bread is onion naan, not chili naan. And I like my bread to complement my entree, not imitate it.

When there's a wide array of good Indian restaurants in the tri-valley area, I just don't understand how this place survives. To me, it's the worst of the bunch.

I'm not going back. I'm not going back. I'm not going back. There, now hopefully I can remember this time.

And to be very clear, I mean no offense to the individuals who run this place. I get that they're human beings trying to earn a living. But the keyword there is earn. You guys need to step up your game. Instead of sitting and reading a book the entire time I'm in your restaurant, look up once in a while, act like you give a hoot, and improve the customer experience.

Just went to cafe tandoor today during a lunch break and decided that this place really can surprise me.

Honestly, I think that the buffet here is really worth it. 10 dollars for all you can eat, and soda as well. Besides that, I am not really a big fan of all you can eat places. The best part about the all you can eat is, there is a huge variety of food, and it is very delicious!! Love the butter chicken curry here and the boneless chicken as well as some of the appetizers. Will definitely come back again for more!

So far this is the best Indian food I have found in San Ramon.  The first time I got the chicken tikka masala with naan and samosas.  I was very satisfied with the whole meal and even had some delicious left overs for the next day.  I recently tried the chicken wrap, but I did not care for it.  To me the chicken was a little too dry.  I think I will stick to the traditional dishes.

The service was decent; you have to get your own utensils which I could care less about, but others might not like this.  Your order is brought to you, but I felt the wait was a little longer than other similar places (Chaat Cafe).  Overall this is good place that you should check out.

For only $10.99 my boyfriend and I were successful enough to (a) be full and (b) share equally Cafe Tandoor's Butter Chicken meal. With an extra order of garlic naan, this place totally overpowered and won us over from the mini-bites we had at the winery. The right amount of spicy-ness and creamy texture of the curry and large portions of food, amazed me to how little we paid.

The restaurant itself is quite spacious. Its a "fast food" place with that restaurant quality. Quite a little gem in the San Ramon area.

First time here for lunch, seems they have good stuff!  A good sized lunch buffet was enjoyed by my friends, all you can eat, they were stuffed!  I had a chicken naan wrap - the chicken cooked and spiced very well, tender and flavorful.  A cooling cucumber salad in the wrap and on the side needed just a bit of...salt?  But for $7, it's a bargain!

while the place inside isn't much to look at (walls could use a fresh coat of paint) I enjoyed lunch there and plan to return sometime soon.

We decided to try this place since it had 4 stars and we were in the area. We love India Garden in downtown Pleasanton, so we were hoping for goodness.

The first thing we realized was that they dont like credit cards. They will take them, but its a hassle. I had to leave my card up there while they ran it. The man who took our order made the transaction awkward as well. I also asked if they had iced tea and he kind of just looked at the fridge and then back at me. Typically, id leave at this point, but I figured we had might as well try the food.

We ordered samosas and Saag for our main course. The samosas were pretty good. Our saag was decent as well. The naan, though, didnt seem fresh and the rice was average. Overall, the food was average.

Our biggest gripe was the service. Not friendly at all. Maybe we took it the wrong way, but at this point, its probably our first and last trip. We arent expecting anyone to bend over backwards, but some friendliness would be nice.

$10 buffet is not a bad deal, though the buffet is a little understocked overall. They had tandoori chicken and a chicken korma which were good, but were light on the veg options.

They DO bring fresh hot naan to the table, not the sort of lukewarm stale stuff that tends to lie there for an hour.

Try getting the wraps, those are very tasty.

Having just moved up from San Diego, I needed somewhere to take the place of Punjabi Tandoor for my late night Indian food runs.  I came here with my co-workers for dinner one night and everything was fantastic.  I haven't been adventurous enough to try anything besides chicken tikke masala, but I was told that the butter chicken was delicious so I went for that.  The man who co-owns the restaurant made my dish according to how spicy I wanted it and it was PERFECT.  Even though it was close to closing and we were a big group, the people there made us feel like family. They brought over a delicious appetizer for us try--for free and came by our table at least 3 times to offer us food and ask how everything was!! Take my word for it, if you're looking for great Indian food, this is the place to go---& they have take-out which means extra points from me!

First visit was for dinner.  I was a little confused about the difference between ala carte and the dinner but all went well.  You go to the counter to order but they bring the food to you.  Go ahead and grab some napkins and utensils yourself.  Chicken tikka masala was good and we scored with the mango curry.  Pesto garlic naan was great.  Lamb kabobs were pretty good, but fairly spicy.  I'll have to try the lunch buffet next.  Reasonably priced for quality and quantity, but this is the only place I have tried in the area.

THE best casual restaurant in San Ramon. I think this is one of the few Indian/Pakistani joints in America that IS listed on foursquare but has NOT been blown up by  the modern hipster and even more worthless 'anti-hipster' looking for a cool restaurant to 'check-in'... I guess we'll just have to wait until it's cash only.

Cafe Tandoor is best enjoyed after 1 PM when the $10 lunch buffet is in full effect and the corporate drones have filed out. I swear, if they allowed me to eat my lunch while sitting on the toilet, I'd stay for the full 3 hours. See you next Monday, Cafe Tandoor.

P.S. Get rid of those shithead kids that hang out in front of the restaurant all afternoon

3.5 stars ..We are fortunate here at AT&T in that Cafe Tandoor visits our cafeteria every Tuesday and we can purchase LARGE Tandori chicken diced and wrapped in Naan for a great price!

The chicken itself while sometimes lacking in flavor (not spicy at all), makes up for itself with quantity...The wrap is huge like a big SUPER BURRITO and filled with diced tandori and cucumber.

Don't forget to smother your tandori with Mint and Tamarind chutney! it adds just the right amount of "kick".

Food is pretty good though a little pricey.  I love the sizzling tandoori chicken but doesn't come with anything but onions. Not even rice or naan. Wings are great as well but they always forget the ranch or green sauce with take out.

Customer service...the man with the mustache that works the register/phone is really rude and unfriendly.  Not very warm and seems unappreciative for our business.  Not the best front man to remember your restaurant by...

PROS: tamarind chutney and mint chutney came in a squeeze bottle, this means that I can drown all my food in either of them and not feel bad.

FYI -- chutneys should ALWAYS be in ketchup squeeze bottles like this. I mean, it's India's version of ketchup anyway right? I don't even OWN ketchup in my own house, but I DO own many-a-chutney.

ON THE FENCE: Naan -- steaming hot, but a little too crispy maybe underneath. I like when naan is slathered in ghee and chewy on the inside. This was pretty dry (before I drown in chutneys) and crispy. It still tasted good though, and was chewy on the inside... but I am just a naan snob.

CONS: I got the vegetarian wrap with the cucumber salad... I read another review on here that said the cucumber salad was bland... well.. yes, yes it was. I tasted my date's potato salad and I wanted to eat that instead. I actually got the idea to make potato salad this week because I have lots of potatoes that I don't want to forget about. Maybe a curry potato salad... mm... that sounds nice.

    Anyway.

The actual wrap itself was kind of good, I mean, it was nothing amazing.. but I was hungry and it filled me up. It was a little messy though considering it was wrapped with naan so there was nothing really holding it in on the other end when you're biting into it. I think it had some sort of a potato thing that I don't know the name of as the main filler. Then some tomato and cucumber salad type thing along with it. I also slathered this with the two kinds of chutneys.

I ate most of it, I filled up pretty fast though since I ate the naan beforehand.

My date got the spicy shish kebob wrap and he said it was super hot. He also got it with the potato salad. It had some kind of a curry looking sauce on it that was kind of creamy looking. I don't know I didn't taste it.

He kept saying the employee was rude because he didn't acknowledge him when he said "thank you," but I told him to not be so sensitive.

We left full and I wanted to sleep immediately after, but that might have been because I spent three hours cleaning before we ate. Also, I will probably never eat here again because I don't live in San Ramon, but I would definitely try something else on the menu.

    Solid 3 stars.

I usually have their chaat and/or chicken wrap - and I love both. I'm not a big fan of spicy food, and I find this place to be reasonable when it comes to spice- they'll cater to your spice level, a fact I appreciate. I really love their chicken tandoori wrap - a large, filling sandwich that will last two meals.

The service here is really good - they are laidback but responsive and attentive.

Andf the price is really reasonable. Today's meal - one chaat dish, one entree, two naans and two drinks cost us $20.  Not bad for a comforting, delicious meal :)

Nothing to wow about, but for under 10 dollars you get an entree, rice, and veggie. Enough for leftovers, which is always a good thing.

I ordered the saag. It was good, a lil on the greasy side, but had some decent flavor. Would definitely recommend for a nice good quick cheap lunch choice.

So this Review is coming a bit late.. but I've been busy what can I say?

My Fiance' & I decided to try Indian food for the 1st time (we are late bloomers).... So I went on Yelp to see what was in the neighborhood... actually found a couple of places that were no longer in business.. LAME...

Eventually I stumbled on Cafe Tandoor, and was like, the menu looks amazing, lets give it a try... So we ordered the butter chicken (nice safe dish for us 1st timers), and Chicken Tikka... we ordered the meals which came with the main dish as well as a side and naan..  we also got an apetizer (some type of potato deep fried goodness)..

Everything was amazing... we were very please with everything.. Not overly spicy... Very nice flavors.. the Butter chicken practically melts in your mouth.. I didn't want to share.. hahaha

I ate the leftover Chicken Tikka the next day and it was amazing again..

I recommend this place to anyone... Whether you are just starting your venture into Indian Cuisine or an old pro..

Cafe Tandoor you did not dissapoint.

    Will

The first time I ordered form this restaurant, I was pretty impressed.  I ordered lamb curry and some vegetable pakoras, because pakoras are one of my farvoritest things in the whole wide world.  Everything was good, but rather spicy.  Unfortunately they don't ask you when you order if you would like the dishes mild, medium, or hot.

Some time passed, and I found myself craving Indian food again.  I ordered the same dishes, but I forgot that I needed to specify that I'd like the milder version of the dishes.  Well, the curry was much spicier and the lamb was a bit fatty and definitely oily.  The pakoras were pretty oily as well.  It is too bad; I ordered the meal ala carte and had to toss half of the pakoras because my digestive system just couldn't handle that heat!  There's a fair chance I'll return there again, someday, but I can't make the mistake of not clearly requesting mild or like a mild-medium spiciness.

Cafe Tandoor is a regular spot for me. I usually get the Keema Naan and a drink for about $6, which is about as cheap as a meal can get at the SR Market Place; alternatively, you could spend that $6 on a thin, industrial footlong at Subway around the corner, or maybe day old sushi at Nob Hill.

If naan won't satisfy, everything else is reasonably priced. I recommend the thick, savory Boti wrap when you're starving; for something light and easy, the Veggie wrap.

Get the potato salad, which is much tastier than the watery cucumber.

The lighting is dim and dull. A warm, homely feel.

The service is pretty quick and no-nonsense.

For me, Tandoor is tied with Mediterranean Grill (across the street) for best San Ramon dining experience. However, because of the latter's pricing, I typically choose Tandoor when in the area.

I really don't know why it has taken me so long to write a review on this place since i eat there once a week.  I really love their curries.  I typically get the chicken tika masala which is a fairly light curry unlike some other places that load it up with cream which i think is nasty.

My new favorite there is the fish curry, which is catfish simmered in a dark non-creamy curry sauce.  I guess the only thing i'd say about their curry is that they need to add a bit more spice to it.  I guess they are trying to cater to the non-Indian customer who doesn't like his food quite as spicy as a native.    However, they are more than willing to customize your order based on how spicy you like it.

On Sundays, they now have a buffet which is awesome for sampling many of the different curries they offer.  Bottom line, this is one of the best Indian places in San Ramon that i have tried and is definitely my go to place.

Very bad customer service. The people who run this restaurant will treat you differently based on your background. They behave as if they are still living in India.

I ordered my food before a family of 5 and I waited for my food for 20 mins. This family who speaks the same language as these guys got the food before me. The entire family got its food and I am still waiting for a single item to come out.

I was pissed off, canceled the order (not without drama from the guy at the cash register) and went to Cheesecake factory instead.

Also there is no consistency in the food quality. Sometimes the food is too spicy and sometimes it is too bland. Depends on the cook inside the kitchen. Items are over-priced.

The Café Tandoor menu mixes fusion items (tandoori salads, tandoori wraps) with traditional items including street food snacks, a.k.a., chaat (e.g., pani puri, cholay, poori aloo, pav bhaji), pakoras, fresh naan (12 kinds), curries, kababs, daily specials, lassis, chai ($1.99) and desserts (e.g., gulab jamun, popsicles).  I like the format - order up front, get your own utensils and water, pick up some squeeze bottles of mint and tamarind chutneys and choose a seat.  If you dine in, you can refill your soda as often as you want.  The ambiance is warm (there's an area with couches, yellow & terracotta colored walls) and relaxed.

The place appears to be Indian owned with a mixed clientele during lunch (including some Indians).  I had the fish wrap ($7.99). The menu above the register doesn't describe the dishes but their paper menu (located outside) does. The wrap consisted of boneless fairly large pieces of bright red fried catfish (a little crispy), crisp chopped romaine, a bit of diced red onion and chutney.  I liked the naan.  It was thick and chewy with the markings of the tandoori oven.  The wrap was decent but (1) there wasn't much fish or onion, (2) the sauces were toooo sweet and (3) they were too restrained w/ their spicing.  I doused it with plenty of mint chutney.  It came with potato or cucumber salad.  I chose the cucumber salad which was extremely plain.

I think I would come back since they have a lengthy menu and I like chaat but I hope the other items aren't also too sweet.
