Wow. I am surprised that I have not yelp this place yet. This is probably THE cafe I go most often with my family. The decor is cute. The food is delicious. And best of all, there is almost no wait every time I go. I think people just never bother to give them a chance considering that there are 10 other similar cafes around that one block.

My favorite dish is the Baked Bolognese on Rice. So far, Cafe Spot is the only place that actually bake this dish (along with other baked dishes) WHEN I order it. These sorta baked dishes are always sizzling hot and sometimes even bubbling when they are served. I love that everything feels fresh and clean in this place.

My brother's favorite is the Hainan Chicken. I also love this dish a lot. The chicken comes without bones! Big bonus. The sour chili sauce and the onion sauce are also really good. I would lick the plate if I can to not waste a single drop of it.

My dad's favorite is the curry. He claims that they have some special spice that gives the "authentic-ness" to the curry. He LOVEs that they put nuts and raisins on top. No kidding, but my dad gives a lecture on how curry should be like Cafe Spot's whenever we bring up the topic of curry .. Anyways, he also likes the way that some potatoes are mashed and mixed with the curry. I am no expert on curry compared to my dad. I can be satisfied with those Japanese instant curry cubes sold at grocery markets. They are so convenient yet so good.Haha.

As for my mom, her favorite dish WAS the Singapore or Malaysian Fried Noodles. The reason why I put "was" is because they used to make it way more flavoring. The dish now is a bit bland. My mom has opted to order their soup noodles which are pretty good as well.

Come try this place out if you have not.

A little pricier compared to other HK cafes in the area.

Cute cafe with a big flat screen plastered on (one side of) the wall for all u sport maniacs.

Their drinks are served in cute little mugs but always somehow taste watered down for some reason.

Service, most of the time was below average.

I have only tried a couple of their dishes and only favored the Filet Mignon Fried Rice so far.

This is one of those Hong Kong cafes that serves Chinese diner food and a selection of sweets that only the Hong Kongers can do.

I was brought here for the sweet rice dessert which I washed down with YingYong - a coffee and tea beverage that was invented in Hong Kong. Read more here http://en.wikipedia.or...

This is Alhambra so very affordable and kinda exotic for me, even though I'm Chinese...from England. Does that count? :)

Hard to tell if this place stands out from all the other HK Style cafes in the area, but Cafe Spot was good enough to make me miss HK. Plenty of seating and clean and bright. Menu was extensive- lots of the usual HK drinks and desserts (curry fish balls and waffle eggs!!! :D ), noodles, and tons of rice plates.

Got the lunch special -  tomato beef rice came with a drink (+ $1 for my hk style milk tea). The beef was not tough and the tomato sauce was sweet and perfect, milk tea came in those fun "glass jar-mugs" and was perfectly flavored just like how it tastes in hk. My friend got the lemon tea- WAY too sweet the waiter was nice enough to dilute it with more tea.

HUGE portions, when our plates came out my friends all stared and wow-ed.

This place is definitely better than the regular cafes in SGV.  The food just taste better than the other ones.  Some people might have mentioned it already, their curry is quite unique.  They also serve that HK pancake thing which alot of people will love it.  I like how this place is decorated as well.  However, like many other cafes, it does not make continuous improvements.  I hope it will get even better, rather than just staying at the same level.

I been here a couple times in the past couple of weeks. Everything I eaten was pretty plain &blahs. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong thing but I order what I normally order at other cafes cause they're usually the same. But everything I eaten had no real taste to it ]: I ended up not finishing my food each time &even took it home. I took a few more bites before I ended up giving up on it.

I really enjoy the setting tho. I like sitting on the right side even tho it makes me look even shorter. Its open late just not super late like the other few cafes around Alhambra &Montery Park.

I'm surprise because every time I come here, it is not overly crowded. I guess I'm just lucky to miss the crowds or others don't like this place as much as I do. That's all good coz I hate waiting for a table.

On a recent visit I grabbed the clams with wine broth. It was beautifully done, the clams were very plump and juicy. The broth needed a touch more salt but still good flavor. My wife got the filet of sole and she thought it was outstanding. Just a touch of batter on the outside and grilled to perfection with a buttery mushroom sauce. We also tried the curry fish balls and the spicy chicken wings - both were very nicely done and tasty.

They also have great flavored ice teas. Service was friendly and efficient, the waiter filled my ice tea several times before I even summoned him which was great. The other waitress gave use some extra free dessert which was much appreciated by my son.

Overall a great place that I like visiting.

This is our favorite Hong Kong style cafe.  We find the quality of food better than the other cafes in the neighborhood (especially the fish cutlet and shrimp dishes, which are always fresh, in our experience).  Free refills for most drinks.  The portion of the food off the regular menu is huge.  The leftover is enough for the next meal.  The afternoon tea specials between 3-6 are smaller but come with drinks and deserts.

The service can be spotty.  We like Patty who always gets our orders right and is very attentive with refills.  With others, sometimes an item or two may be dropped from our order or we have to wave people down for service, which can be annoying.

This is a standard issue chinese restaurant that caters towards more authentic Honk Kong cuisine. And that's not a bad thing. I went here late on a Friday night (another plus, they're open late) and it was pretty busy. The room is well lit and the tables and chairs were comfortable.
I can't remember exactly what I ordered, there was a chicken and beef dish from what I can. The food was good. They supposedly have refills on popular drinks like iced green tea and milk tea. This seems like a great deal for $2.50 or something like that. However good luck on getting a refill after the first drink. It was really hard to track down the waiters for another refill. We had to ask two different waiters. And when they brought the refill, it was a bit watered down. Not the best milk tea I've had. For the price though everything was good. I would go here again.

It was quiet when I got there at their opening time (11:30am) but by 1pm it was PACKED!  The food was your normal HK style cafe food. Their HK pancake is too eggy for me and doesn't compare to the ones at Eggettes in San Francisco. Cafe Spot's HK pancakes only come in one flavor (original) and Eggettes has flavors such as chocolate, green tea, coconut, etc. But overall the place was CLEAN and the food was good. I had the sizzling udon and black pepper 3 meat dish.  It was a lot of food! I like Baccali's better still though...

Wow! A HK Style Cafe that actually has quality in food? And I don't mean in a "it's really late let's go to JJ's" type quality.

This is a place I could see myself making my new go to comfort diner. On one side are high chairs and booths surrounding a TV and a wall encased with wine bottles. On the other is the traditional seating.

I ordered the Pork Belly rice platter, while the girlfriend had the baked spaghetti. Both were fabulous and not too loaded on the salted/greasy side. Just the right amount too. We also had the HK Style pancakes which were perfectly right in their sweetness. All it needed was to be topped with ice cream!

The decor wins me here, it's not too upscale to make it intimidating, but modern enough to feel like it's really in a modern asian metropolis. There's also a certain charm to it... alcohol and blended drinks are served in mason jar type mugs, and the kitchen is encased in glass walls for you to peek through. Oh yes, beer and wine are served here...

Most definitely coming back.

I grew up going to HK style cafes with my family, and my memory of them are all the same: a huge menu of Chinese versions of Western foods, all rather stale tasting. Spaghetti with ketchup sauce, you get the picture. Cafe Spot is an exception in that they seem to actually care about the food. I came here once for dinner on Christmas day, and the customers there were all happily eating away not because it was the only place open on a holiday, but because they actually *wanted* to be there.

I ordered the hainan chicken, not expecting much, but it turned out really tender and moist with lots of garlic sauce and fluffy rice, and will now be my go-to hainan chicken when Savoy is closed. My girlfriend swears by the red wine braised ribs and they were indeed impressive and massive. We also ordered a Hong Kong waffle, which strangely enough took five times longer than the ribs to arrive, but was nevertheless fun for the novelty. Love the hot teas here.

Cafe Spot is one of those restaurants that looks prettier on the outside than on the inside.  The restaurant is actually sort of small with the seating area split into two sides: one side has high raised chairs like at bars while the other side has about 12 regular tables.

For drinks, we ordered the bottomless lemon iced tea and sour plum tea.  The former was overly sweet and lacking in the lemony taste while the latter just tasted horrible in general.

Since it was our first time there, we asked the waiter what their specialtys were.  He recommended the Hainan chicken and the Red Wine Beef Rib.  We got both of those plus the fried calamari.

The complimentary vegetable soup was hearty and tasty.

The Red Wine Beef Rib was pretty unique since not many restaurants serve it.  The meat was tender, and you get a huge piece for $14.  It is the dish to get if you dine at this establishment.

However, I wouldn't get the Hainan Chicken as the rice was bland, and the sauces were overly oily.  I was not surprised though as I did not expect most places would have better Hainan chicken than Dong Nguyen Restaurant or Green Zone.

But I was disappointed in the calamari as it was too salty and overfried.  The calamari were basically crunches of batter.  You can barely taste the calamari; it did not compare to the one at facecafe, who's only good dish was the calamari.

Overall, I would not come here again due to the lack of decor and average taste in food.  Even though the service was pretty good, there are so many HK cafes to choose from, and I will be heading to Tasty Garden, the best in the category, the next time I am in the mood for some beef cubes and walnut shrimp.

I went there with my friend right after school for lunch and we ordered our food and our drinks. Everything was fine until the end...my friend and i were just talking and one of the waitress literally told us to pay and get out. There weren't any waiting line and there were plenty of empty tables. At the end i didnt leave any tips at all. HORRIBLE SERVICE

Cafe Spot is not your typically nasty-last-resort SGV cafe, so kudos to that!

So far, the pattern has been that dinner is amazing, and lunch is less-than-amazing.  It must be a different cook for lunch and dinner.  Ever since they opened, my family and I have always loved their Red Wine Braised Steak - it's probably one of the best items on the menu.  The meat is really tender and the flavor is perfectly marinated every time (at dinner).  Their Hong Kong Pancake is also pretty good - not as great as the authentic Gaei Dan Jaei in Hong Kong, but it's one of the only places that serve it in this area.  I tried the Filet Mignon Fried Rice.  I know what's in it (an ingredient which should not be revealed to people who don't cook), but it makes this dish taste so good!  Haha.

I rated this place four stars because they are only amazing during dinner time.  I mean, they're not bad during lunch time, but I believe that a five star restaurant rating should be given to a restaurant with more consistency in the quality of their food.

YOU MUST GET THE PASSION FRUIT ICED TEA HERE! It's too good, and it has free refills! How cool is that? It's only like 2.95 I'd say. I didn't know what to get, but my uncle suggested some steak to me. So I told him to just order it for me. When I got my food, my steak was bigger than my head... literally. It had a side of rice or pasta, corn, and veggies. Plus the sauce on your steak. All for only 11 something! Not bad at all. The pasta was a bit tasteless... but their servers are by far one of the best I've seen at a cafe around this area.

Their curry is one of the best in the area. Curry chicken, curry ngau larm, etc. Delicious! Their hainan chicken rice's pretty good too although they don't have the dark soy sauce that I like.

Lunch prices are really unbeatable. One thing though I don't really like their iced milk tea, too sweet and not enough of the tea taste. Basically not authentic HK style iced milk tea. But the food's delicious and the service's fast!

This place is a bit small for a Cafe, especially in the SGV area where lots of Asians like to eat out.

I only come here when the other Cafe's are packed, this place is decent. It isn't something special, but I must say that their Curry Brisket is yummy with a side of steam rice. I have tasted other dishes of their's and it isn't anything amazing.
I used to like this place a lot a few years back, but I think they changed management. Back then their food was amazing, now, it's like any other cafe, i guess.

I gave it 3 stars because they give you free refills on BOBA. What Cafe is willing to give you that?

This is a HK style cafe in SGV.  I've been here twice now.  The first time was a few years ago when I was on my quest for places that serve HK style waffles, my childhood favorite street vendor snack in Hong Kong.  I am new to LA and asked some local friends to take me to a place where they serve this and we ended up getting dinner here.  I had remembered that I did not like them my first visit here.

We got the fish curry, salisbury steak, Chinese sausage clay pot, seafood linguine, Eel w/ fried rice.  The food is similar to the food I had at Garden Cafe which is only a couple blocks away.  The only difference is that the curry was the tastiest and stood out from the rest.  The salisbury steak (aka filet mignon on the menu) was also a bit pricey for a HK style cafe - it was $14.99.  Save your money and buy a frozen dinner Salisbury Steak.  The Chinese sausage clay pot came out in about 10 minutes which is considered fast since the menu said it may take up to 20 minutes.  This could be because it was almost 9pm on a Wednesday and the cafe wasn't jam packed.

I can't say I care for the HK Style Waffles .  They really tasted like waffles, when you bite into them they are suppose to be hollow but you are surprised with spongy, cake like texture in the middle.  My friends commented that they taste a lot like those cone like paper wrapped spongy cakes from the Chinese bakery w/ the walnut on top.  $4.50 each is too much to be paying for these!  If you are looking to eat authentic HK Style Waffles, this is not the place!

I am continuing my quest for good HK Style Waffles  in LA!  Wish me luck!

This is a great cafe in San Gabriel Valley. I've been to many cafes in and around San Gabriel, but this one is my favorite. The atmostphere is great, and the waiters are great people. Also, the food is even more amazing there. The double steak is a great deal, and even better are its drinks. I recommend for the tea lovers the Green Milk tea at Cafe Spot, with refills!

Everyone is friendly at Cafe Spot and the food is great. There really is not more to ask for in a restuarant, also Cafe Spot is not very expensive. A great meal could be had very cheaply.

Theres also this cool smell as you walk in and look at the desserts and the chef's behind the glass. Amazing place!

I came here for the afternoon tea.  The afternoon tea starts from 3pm to 6 pm with a special menu which includes a small main dish, a drink of your choice (except for fresh juice or smoothies), and a dessert..  The price is $5.25 for a few selections which includes the famous Hong Kong Pancakes , and $5.95 for another 6 to 8 selections which include soup noodles and minced beef rice or noodle.

The portions are small, since it's an afternoon snack to chill.  The drinks are pretty good.  For afternoon tea, we got the Hong Kong pancake which came out hot and and fresh.  Excellent!!!  Also, ordered the minced beef rice and it was delicious, but not enough portion.

Their main menu is priced above average with some fusion items quite expensive.  They had a promotion for Kobe beef and had a selection of red wine in stock. Price was also expensive tho.

They charge $1 for any credit card purchases under $20, so bring some cash if you eat under $20 bucks.

I been here before and the fried beef fun (thin white rice noodle) tasted good also.  Another dish I would recommend is their fried salt and pepper chicken wings.... they are soooo good. Better than many other cafes I tried.

The atmosphere feels like you are in hong kong with a lot of cantonese speaking patrons.

Parking lot is small and spaces are tight.  Street parking is usually all taken because the employees take them.

I recommend this place to cool down in the afternoon and try their afternoon tea special from 3-6 pm.

Review based on 5-10 visits.

The first time I came here, I got the baked bolognese noodles with cheese, and it was pretty good. I've had some really bad ones in the area, so this was a good sign. The next few times I came here, wasn't as good as I had hoped. The beef dish was a bit too raw-tasting. I'm all for rare and medium-rare, but when it has that raw taste.. No thanks. The pan-fried sole was also very disappointing. I usually try the sole fillets are various cafes, and this one was just saddening. They gave me two long strips of fish, but they were very thin and skinny. Being pan-fried, it dried out the fish and basically became fish bacon. The sauce didn't help at all. The milk tea was decent. I like their green milk tea as well, but it isn't all that. The cups they serve it in is kind of weird, but oh wells. What I find really odd though, is how fast their ice melts! My milk teas gets really watered down. Service is decent, and the decor is pretty cool. Parking is somewhat tight, might need to park on the street.

Overview:
Average food. Some not so good. Average prices.
The decor is kind of cool. Feels like a cafe-bakery.
The milk tea and the green milk tea are decent. Ice melts really fast(weird).
Parking is somewhat tight. Might need to park on street.

With so many cafes in the area, it's hard to say which cafe is good and why, so I usually just determine it by the dishes I like.  Cafe Spot has always hit the spot (lol) with their traditional and slightly fusion dishes. Two in particular that always seem to have me keep coming back are the Red Wine Rib Steak & Clam Linguine.

The Red Wine Rib Steak is probably one of their more expensive dishes.  Your plate consist of a large rib that's been slowly braised till the meat falls off the bone, your choice of rice or noodle and some once frozen corn.  The Clam Linguine isn't your normal white sauce but comes in a light clam broth which I always manage to slurp up after eating all my noodles.  Their portions are always generous and service quick although not always attentive.  For dessert/ appetizer I like to order the Hong Kong Pancake.  There's a wine list too although honestly I have never bothered to take a look at it.

The atmosphere is nice especially on HOT summer days, for some reason their AC is always REALLY strong.  So for girls who get cold easily, bring a light sweater... just in case.  My favorite thing about the atmosphere here is actually how it doesn't quite feel like a noisy-after-you-get-drunk-and-want-to-eat cafe (Garden).  It's a nice place where you can dine with some friends or your family and have an actual conversation.

Parking is a pain though.  I recommend parking on the street and NOT in the lot.  The spaces are really tight together and seriously just save yourself the trouble and park on the street if the lot looks full.

The scent of buttery steak goodness greets you as you walk in.  The decor is warm and inviting and my favorite part are the hello kitty mobils.  The first time I got there, I was thoroughly impressed by the drinks, which are served in mason jars.

They have Hong Kong mini-style pancakes.  I really enjoy the Hainan chicken which comes in a bento box.  I've had one bad instance where one of my noodle soups tasted a bit soapy :( I know, gross right? I usually get there earlier than the rush, so that might've been the cause of it.

Despite that, I'm still a fan.  I try to get out here whenever I can.

Alright, what were my friends thinking when they ordered the gu-lao rou (sweet and sour)?  Actually, it was good.  So was the chow fun with black bean sauce (with fish).  The fried rice was good too, but I don't really like any fried rice, so I'm no expert on that.

I have no idea what the server's name was, but he was funny as heck.  Great sense of humor, even though he wasn't trying to be funny.  He ran back and forth for our refills of tea, etc.  He deserves applause.

Years ago, I had the red wine braised steak (probably more like brisket) and didn't care for it, but I'll go back and try it again.  This last visit put the place back on the map for me.  Open late night, but so are most places nearby.

Update HERE (4/28/09)
I hate to say the service at a Chinese place is good, because that's an oxymoron.  Besides, if anyone from the restaurant reads that they'll figure they're messing up and change.

Nevertheless, I really like this place.  The baked milk thing is good.  And the drink refills keep coming.  BTW the funny server's name is Ken.

i think my grandma was the first person to show me this place. the food is pretty good, your typical hong kong style chinese food. i usually get one of the pasta dishes whenever i go, but i mix it up every once in awhile and have never left unsatisfied.* you also receive complimentary vegetable beef soup, which comes in a little cup but it's mighty tasty!

the decor is pretty nice for an asian restaurant. my friends and i were discussing how it was one of the first places to have painted walls and overall nice feel to it. there are various seating arrangements:  standard tables, booths, a giant table perfect for large groups and seated in front of the television showing some sort of sports game, and really high tables. their drinks also come in jar-mugs, which i found most delightful.

would definitely stop by again and again.

*i got the wanton soup today and was a little disappointed that the shrimp wontons had a powdery texture to it, but the soup itself made up for it and it wasn't a big deal in the end.

Howzit!?

Average food, average drinks. A lot of better places in Alhambra and Monterey Park area. It does offer one of the better atmosphere for lunch. The high chairs are pretty cool for a casual date.

They used to have one of the better Hainan Chicken and chicken flavored rice but quality and taste have gone down. A notable dish is the HK Pancakes. It an egg waffle, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. A Hong Kong street eateries specialty. Not bad. Give it a try.

Parking lot is small, you may have to find street parking on Fifth Ave. during dinning hours.

Er, why you people hatin'? The food is not supposed to be Susanna Foo - I'd say it's in the top 20 percentile for HK cafes in the area. Additionally, the environs are bright and classy, compared to the "dinge" of most lunch spots along Valley. You can lunch with your boss here, or that cute coworker you're trying to hit on.

Pseudo Fruit Smoothies (Mian Mian Bin) are a dollar at lunch. No refills I think. Doesn't matter what flavor you get - all tasteless. I love the fact that they give free Lo Song (Russian Tomato Cabbage) Soup, yummy.

The standout dish is the Shank. I've returned to the restaurant to have it about 20 times over the last 8 years - exceptional repetition for a non-habitual creature like me. I like it with the Red Wine sauce. Although a friend who had it with Mushroom sauce wanted to get a job there just to get the recipe. I thought he was joking, but he sounded really serious. Then again, he's really into mushrooms.

The Eggster (Dan Zay) - puffy egg waffle pastry sheet is warm, soft, and vanilla-y. A guilty pleasure.

Yes, parking spots are narrow and can be annoying if crowded.

I like Cafe Spot. Went here last weekend with co-workers, about 10 of us. I enjoyed the vegetable soup everyone gets. It has a little bit of spice to it. Most of our party got the braised beef rib entree, which a lot of reviewers here have recommended. They really liked it. Portion was HUGE... And just like other cafes, you can have rice or pasta with it. For MY appetizer, I ordered a ham & egg sandwich. LOL... Gotta love the variety in these cafes. For my main course, I got the minced beef with gravy over rice. VERY GOOD... Of course, it had an over easy egg on top. Dessert for all of us were the Hong Kong pancakes. They were light & fluffy. Small, bite-sized, round, tear away dessert. I'm a fan.... I could pop those all night.

A definite plus for this restaurant was the availability of beer & wine. This usually isnt the case in the SG valley cafes that i've been to. Try this place...

I'd probably been here about 10-15 times already within the past 2 1/2 years, yet every time I come here, I still have a hard time to think of what to write about.

In terms for the food, there's really nothing much that stands out except when I came here the first time, my date got me this steak located deep inside a soft, flaky bread exterior. Although I thought that was unique, it tasted just okay. I'm still searching for a good dish here to eat since I'm here every so often. (not by my own choice)

The ambiance of this place is interesting and there's a flat screen on one end, just in case you need to check out the scores to the basketball game. The parking is in a small space, so try to carpool or just park on the street.

This place is pretty bomb. My bf took me here twice. The service could always be better (totally not expected but the food is excellent. I have not ordered one thing that was bleh or so so here. Everything has been good from appetizers to entrees to drinks! Yum yum.

The braised beef is soooo good. Tender and flavorful. It comes with veggies, corn and rice. They also provide a cup of bortsch (sp?) soup aka. tomato beef soup with cabbage. soooo good.

For appetizers we've ordered the salted fried chicken wings HK style - YUM! and fried tofu. The portions are decent. It can prolly serve about 3 ppl. 4 ppl, order another one. =)

I've had the double grilled pork chop and sole with black pepper sauce. it comes with a choice of rice or pasta and veggies. Again, deeeee-lish.

My bf had the minced pork over rice. Oh man, it's good and huge! You'll definitely have some for the next day.

The baked seafood with rice was pretty good as well but a little on the heavy side and it takes a LONG time for them to make it. My bf had already finished his entire meal before mine even came out. I was a little pissed actually. But right after I said something to the waiter, it magically came out. Add some red vinegar and hot sauce on it and you'll have yourself a very hefty meal.

The lemon ice tea and cold HK style black tea are both my favorites. I drink these every time.

They're also known for this waffle like pancake. I never get to order it b/c most of the time I'm too full but I've seen a lot of ppl order it. Next time I should try it.

For two ppl, dinner was about $35-40. Not too bad for a guaranteed tasty meal.

Mmmm...Cafe Spot.  I started coming here after my cousin introduced me to their delicious HK style pancakes and fatty beef dish (no longer served).  All of the food is here is very delicious and the portions are generous.  I enjoy their lunch specials, which come with a drink and cup of veggie soup.  I like how their drinks come in really interesting jar-like cups.  And they give free refills on certain drinks.

One thing about this place is that their parking lot is pretty cramped and during busy hours you may have a difficult time finding parking, or even if there IS an opening there's no guarantee that your car will even fit.

This is one of those hong kong style "chinese cafes".  There seems to be a whole bunch of these "chinese cafes" all over the San Gabriel valley.  I only come here on Sundays.  But every time I do, this place is super crowded.   So I guess that must mean this is the best one in the area?   The food is well... hard to describe.   It's kindof like what chinese people would make if they tried to make american food:   like steak w black pepper sauce (chinese style). served with noodles (or rice), and a side of corn.  Most dishes come with "soup" and a free drink, such as a hot milk tea.  The soup is not the usual hot and sour or wonton soup, but more like a vegetable soup.  The curry beef is also pretty good -- and its not the usual home cooked chinese curry, either.

and they also have a wine list that includes some pretty well known wineries.  not the cheap stuff.  i dunno, this place defies explanation -- you have to see it for yourself!!

We need a new food category for Chinese Cafe's...

A good "spot" for lunch!

Cafe Spot offers Hong Kong style favorites in a clean stylish restaurant.

I usually order from the lunch menu with my favorites being the fried rice with basil, orange chicken, and Kung Pao Chicken. The lunch specials also come with iced tea and soup. The soup is especially good, reminds me of the soup served at the former Valley Cafe down the street (now the Boiling Crab).

I love meat and I love bread. The perfect combination is a well prepared Wellington Steak. Years ago, when Cafe Spot first opened, I visited there and had my very first Wellington Steak. And trust me, life was good.

Years have gone by, and I just recently re-visited Cafe Spot. Sadly, life was no longer the same.

First off, I ordered my beloved Wellington Steak again. It was badly done. The meat was okay, but the bread was soggy like it was soaked in oil. That was horrific.  Undaunted by the bad steak, I forced my way into my companion's plate and stole a bite of the Eel & Curry Rice plate. Much to my dismay, the rice was terrible as well, and the eels were scarce.

Come'on, I can find more eels on two eel sushi than that eel plate dinner. That was not cool!

Much to my shock, the place was absolutely packed and parking was difficult. Perhaps the Wellington Steak and the Curry Rice & Eel dinner plate were the only bad dishes there. Maybe I will give this place one more chance if I ever do pass them by again.

Pros: Nice decoration. Post modern / European style Chinese fusion restaurant with a big screen TV. Original owner / designer really paid attention to the look and feel of the place.

Cons: Terrible Wellington Steak and murderous Curry Rice & Eels.

Looks nice on the outside. Parking can be a bitch. Interior looks a bit strange.. but let's get on with the food review.

Try the clay pot rice dishes. The secret sauce is delicious. It's probably MSG. This is the only reason to really come to Cafe Spot.  Everything else can be found at any other HK Cafe within the mile radius of Valley Blvd. Nothing to write home about

Another noteworthy item to try would be the Hong Kong pancakes. They are delicious warm.
