I love Cafe Shane and it's definitely a local joint I WANT to support.

Their food is excellent and their service is uber excellent.

I remember coming in right after the Nov 08 election and apparently you got a 10 or 15% discount (I forgot the exact %) if you said "Obama." Me being oblivious to the world and not reading the sign about getting a discount, the waitress kept trying to nudge me to say Obama without outright saying it. I'm such a space cadet.

Waitress: Your check? Um, so... We have a new president.
Me: Yep!
Waitress: Uhh... What's his name?
Me: Huh? (Does she not know who our new president is...)
Waitress: Say his name. (a few winks here)
Me: Uh, Obama.
Waitress: Okay you get a discount.
Me: Huh? (Why am I getting a discount?)
Waitress: You get a discount when you say Obama.
Me: Ohhhhhhh.

How super sweet is that? She could have not said nothing. This is why I Iove Cafe Shane.

Also, I live half a block outside their delivery area but they always bend the rules to make me happy (feed me). So friendly, super nice and yummy! :D

Btw, their strawberry lemonade is the bomb.

I can't believe I am about to write this......the fried chicken was "ok".

Ahhh...that thought feels wrong coming out of my brain, it hurts, the pain...me...thinking fried chicken was "ok".  I am the girl who has loved fried chicken so much that I once ate a box of Swanson frozen friend chicken before it was even defrosted - yes I did!!!  And all I did when finished was lick my fingers and empty the left over crumbs straight into my mouth while making yummy sounds.  Ok, so I was a child when I did it, but if it is was not for a bit of grown up civility I would still express such actions that are clearly still in my soul.

The point is there is NO fried chicken I don't think is the best food ever.  I have had chicken that was too greasy and I ate that, I have had all breading and barely and chicken (I really liked that), I have had country flower, Italian seasoning, home made, award winning or fast food, you name the version - I ate it and at the end experienced nothing but bliss.

But there I was at Café Shane yesterday with my waffles that were soggy, my strawberry mimosa that was warm and an empty water glass that no matter who I asked never seemed to get filled pondering how friend chicken can be both tasteless and not crunchy.  I need to go to KFC tonight and requite my chicken fixation because Café Shane is making me doubt the essence of who I am.

Stayed at a friend's place overnight on the 4th and had breakfast here.  Incredibly good breakfast, with incredibly good potatoes!  We all got the 2 egg meal, complete with toast and potatoes.  Every piece of the meal was perfect - and to my recollection it was roughly $10 a person.

All in all: Great food, great price.  If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by.

My husband and I went to New York and planned on going to Tom's Restaurant which is right down the street. It was closed and Cafe Shane looked busy for brunch so we went here instead.

It is a pretty small place and it took about fifteen minutes to get seated, but they had seats set up outside so we got to sit while we waited at least. He got the chicken and waffles and thought they were really great. His only complaint was that the chicken was a little dry. I got the whole wheat pancakes with mango. I give them credit for having whole wheat pancakes and baking the fresh mango into the pancakes when most places just put some recently frozen topping on the cooked pancakes.

The music was a video of early Al Green, which was loud and got to be a lot after listening to it for 45 minutes. One of the best parts of cafe Shane was that it was a great deal. We were full in  New York for 23 dollars!

Very Cute. Very, very cute.

The vibe is great. Can't say much that hasn't already been said. I too, enjoy the cool live videos that might be on in the background such as a Stevie Wonder concert where he was singing Beatles song with a Vocoder while I was eating delicious Whole Wheat Belgian waffles.

NIce staff, decor, etc... The foods been good. My one complaint is that a small cup of juice (which tasted 'from concentrate') was like $3. I thought that was ballsy considering how many delicous options there are in the area in the way of fresh fruits and smoothies.

Anyway, nobody's perfect. This is a laid back spot to come with a lunch date.

Cutest brunch place ever. First time I went was with my ex for brunch. The strawberry belgium waffles were so delicious.

For some reason the waitstaff (both the men and women) were ridiculously good looking.

The dining area was small but cozy and the TVs showing live Motown, R&B, Jazz, Soul is really wonderful - not the kind of thing that would distract you from eating but enjoyable to look at between bites and conversation.

The second time I went there was with this girl I'm kind of seeing. The home fries were perfectly fried but too spicy for my tastes. She got chicken and waffles which I tried. The chicken was SO tender on the inside and crisp on the outside. My bacon was too salty this time, though.

The first time was a 5, the second time was a 3, but the place is just so charming that I give it a 4!

A friend came to visit for the weekend and while I was finishing up work they took a stroll around Washington Avenue and found this cafe. I ordered the whiting fish sandwich on seven-grain bread, my amgio just a muffin and pineapple juice. My entire experience was great in terms of service, atmosphere and food. The service is very attentive and friendly, the food was delicious and the atmosphere is relaxed. To top it off, you can have yourself a mimosa or choice of other drink from the bar.Definitely make sure you check this place out!

Man, all these negative reviews are getting me down!

Our experience at Cafe Shane was completely undesirable in terms of food, the hostess was very sweet and the waitress was too (until we asked for our side to be changed as it wasn't what we ordered).

The food was not good.
At all.

There seem to be a lot of other places around here, so we will go to those next time.

Don't need too much prose for this place. The service was memorably excellent, which is a rarity. Everyone was very polite and responsive, but not obsequious or ever-present. Chicken and waffles were phenomenal.. juicy, well-seasoned, crispy barely shading into crunchy, the waffles were perfectly moist and chewy.

I don't like that there are televisions on the wall in this place.. I don't go out to watch television, and at the volume they maintain, conversation gets a little strained.

Yes, the food takes a little while to get to your table. That's because they're doing a good job with it. I will definitely be back.

My best friend moved to the neighborhood a few months ago and we paid Cafe Shane a visit on my last morning in town. Delicious! Friendly staff, quick service, yummy food, bright decor...

We went on a quiet Monday lunchtime, but I'm sure it gets much busier on the weekends. We passed by during the Sunday brunchtime rush and there was a decent-sized crowd gathered outside. My initial taste of Cafe Shane leads me to believe it's worth the wait, though.

This update is way overdue. My girlfriend and I are regulars here for brunch. Yes, there are, strangely, two large TVs in the dining room blasting video of whatever music they've chosen that day (past treats include a Tina Turner retrospective, Bob Marley, and my fave, classic Soul Train episodes), it's a small dining room and your server might take a while to get you water or silverware, but somehow it all works out in the end and it's a neighborhood-y, homey, love-your-crazy-extended-Brooklyn-family sorta breakfast.

Service given with a hospitable smile but incomplete. If you have specials, maybe tell the customers about them when you hand them a menu? Isn't that how it usually works?  I didn't know about the special until I overheard a rather brusque patron make the request, and this the last of many.  I shouldn't have to pepper my server with a barrage of questions to find out what is available.

When I asked if it was possible that my order be changed to the special, I was informed that my turkey burger was already on the grill. It had been my second choice, because my first choice was unavailable.

My third grumble is that the metal coffee servers don't keep the brew warm enough. Once you add a bit of milk, your java is room temperature. Yuk. Not the place to come if you remotely like coffee. This is somewhat problematic given that the venue is a cafe. Cafe, from Ottoman Turkish qahveh, means coffee. A cafe should then have passable coffee. This here was not so.

Why the four stars then? The turkey burger that I didn't really want so much was freakin' fantastic. Delicious. Well spiced and juicy. The best turkey burger I have ever eaten.
I am going back next week.

I can't decide if i feel better about the fact that everyone else had the same experience as me, or worse since that means this place is pretty much hopeless.

i too, was en route to toms on a particularly  hung over presidents day monday morning, and cafe shane was about 15 feet closer to sitting down than toms.  we were accosted by a really cute, really nice guy standing outside luring in customers, and feeling vulnerable and starving, we succumbed.  i had been meaning to check out this spot for a while, so i figured why not.  we were sat by the window, brought our beverages, and began to order. i ordered the crepe, and the server responded that they were "out of crepes." i dont really understand how that could be when crepe batter is basically flour, milk, and egg, but hey. what do i know.  i also thought it would have been nice to have been told what they're out of before you decide on what you're ordering, but that didnt happen either.

we placed our orders, and then began to wait.  and wait.  and wait.  a couple sat down next to us about 15 minutes after we arrived.  they ordered.  the got their food.  they both put their LAST BITES into their mouth, and THEN our food arrived.  we waited about 45 minutes total. mind you, we each ordered sandwiches.  and what was so annoying about the whole thing, aside from being starving and thinking about how we already would have been done at toms by now, was that there was never any acknowledgement of why it was taking so long.  not even a "i'm so sorry about the wait, insert lame excuse here".  nothing.  granted we figured out that they must have forgotten our order b/c our waitress came by about 25 minutes after we ordered and said, 'what did you order again? oh right, that should be coming right up."  and then 15 minutes later it came up.

i guess i just feel like if you're going to have someone soliciting customers off the sidewalk to come in and try your establishment - make sure you actually provide them with an overall enjoyable experience!!  if you cant get the food out in less than 45 minutes, dont beg me to come in when i'm on my way to toms.

why the 3 stars then? because the food was actually really really good.  i wanted to give it 1 star b/c i HATE poor service, but thie food was delish.

they didnt refill our waters either though, which is annoying.

so - maybe i'll try delivery. at least i'll be in the comfort of my own home while i wait endlessly. but dont expect to be fed in a hurry if you come here.

I actually kind of love Cafe Shane.  The first time I came here was a holiday (New Year's Day, I guess?) and it was packed, giving us plenty of time while waiting for a table to notice the barrage of signs all over the place basically saying "We're going to be slow as shit, but could you kind of hurry yourself up so we can have the table back?"  And yes, service was very slow.  It was actually so packed, though, that I had no problem forgiving our waitress for being harried.

Sadly, I never managed to get my coffee refilled, but other than that, my food was really good and I wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere so I really didn't care one way or the other how long it took.  Oh, and the fries were really tasty and well-spiced.  Not to mention the entertainment value of the pair of dudes at the next table who were so grumpy about the service that I started to worry they might suffer simultaneous aneurysms.

Delivery has not been a problem for me, though my roommates placed an order the other day that was nigh on disastrous - order screwed up, overcharged, took an hour and a half to show up so the food was wrong AND cold - and then when they handed the guy $30 for a $22 tab, he actually said to them, "And I'll just keep the change."  Riiiight.

I also come here sometimes for coffee if none of my usual options are open (Mondays in this neighborhood: the bane of my existence).  The lattes are overpriced but at least they're there.

Sometimes Tom's is open on Sundays, but a lot of times, it isn't.  Twice we walked down to try to eat at Tom's, and it was closed.  So we ended up at Cafe Shane a few buildings down.  I have to believe that they get a lot of business this way.

I don't know, the food's not horrible, but I almost never enjoy myself at a restaurant if the servers are rude.  It makes me uncomfortable the whole time, probably because I want everyone I meet to like me, but this is not the time or place to get into all that.  The point is, both times I've been, the waitresses were just really unfriendly.

And when I ordered a spinach and goat cheese crepe, the inside was delicious but it came wrapped in this thick sort of whole grain pancake thing that was dry and not fun to eat and not a crepe at all.

I ordered the banana and walnut whole wheat pancakes. Delicious! And filling, I didn't order anything on the side.

Two others I was with ordered the fish and grits. They raved ... but they had also been their before and knew what they wanted before we sat down.

The other person I was with had choc. chip pancakes with eggs and sausage.. the little guys words on the food "they're my second choice to IHOP because they're not chocolatey enough."

Otherwise, I enjoyed the atmosphere and staff. I also don't mind a wait (like the signs read) when the food is good.

This is a cute little place. Emphasis on little, so I wouldn't recommend a large group coming here.

Cafe Shane was really nice. We had a table in front of the window. The restaurant had a steady flow of customers but our service was friendly, food was timely (my friend had fish and grits and I had eggs, potatoes, and an english muffin; we also shared a fruit smoothie), and the atmosphere was relaxed. The price was quite reasonable.
It's definitely a good breakfast spot, especially if you're going to the Brooklyn Museum.

Mixed reviews aside...I had a great experience here.  My partner in crime was not a huge fan of her omlette but still gives the overall place a 3.  I on the other hand ordered the breakfast burrito and was seeing stars it was so damn good.

We stumbled in here Saturday morning for brunch...okay, Saturday late morning...alright. Saturday afternoon.  What?  So I woke up at noon.  Anywho: We were seated right away at the side bar even though it was very busy.  Its a small cozy little place and we noticed that there was nothing larger than a 4 top...let alone room for it.  I had been lured in by the "Chicken and Waffles All Day Long" sign but something made me go breakfast burrito last minute.  It was a good call.

The breakfast burrito was perfectly sized and was crammed full of tender flavor, most of all spicy sausage!  It was complimented by spicy potatoes which I of course covered in hot sauce because everything is great with hot sauce.  I devoured every bite of it with audible sounds of delight and then took a lazy fart-walk to the Atlantic center.

So, go for breakfast or brunch and order the breakfast burrito and you too will have a stunning review to report.

I've been to Shane a few times, once for lunch and the rest for breakfast & brunch.  The food, service and atmosphere is great!  You can sense the effort they're making to compete with Tom's (two shops down the street) and also establish themselves as a great restaurant on their own merit.

Brunch is awesome.  The breakfast burrito is incredible and so are the home fries.  The pancakes are good but can't compete with Tom's.  Lunch is also great but be prepared to wait.  They have that sign on the wall for a reason - I think it says "Please don't judge us while you wait, but after you ate" or something like that.  I'm glad Cafe Shane is in my neighborhood!

The coffee is very good. I recommend it highly. It's not the quality of a good coffee shop, but it's better than the average diner coffee.

The service is amazing - really extremely attentive, even on a busy Sunday.

The mango iced tea was also really good.

The food was terrible. Just awful. Had to send back pancakes with a fishy smell. Almost sent back room temperature waffles. More salad than entree for our other dish.

Go for drinks. Don't get the food.

I am addicted to the Salmon Burgers. We love to have brunch here at least twice a month. Their chicken and waffles is very yummy. But they also have healthy fare such as yogurt and granola with fruit. You can't go wrong with one of their omelets too! Also try their 're-mix' drink. It's a combination of strawberry-aid with iced tea (I think, who cares just try it!!)  Other great entrees include the mango shrimp and chicken breast sandwich.  I hope you will join the locals for a bite one weekend. They're not open on Mondays and tip well...the wait staff are young and very nice.

I'm new to the area and found Cafe Shane while looking for a brunch spot. Really friendly service, great food, nice atmosphere. And the prices are good too. I had the eggs florentine, which didn't have enough hollandaise sauce for my taste, but was still good. The potatoes they serve with breakfast are awesome - crispy on the outside and SPICY! I'm not a huge potato fan but I couldn't stop eating these. I will definitely go back.

I went with my mom for breakfast, the fish and whiting with grits was great. The hot chocolates were really tasty with the added whipped cream. And the music and decor were cute and fun. It wasn't that crowded but the service was slooooow! We had to wait too long to get our waiter's attention to ask for the bill, but if you are not in a hurry and want to enjoy a leisurely brunch/lunch, it is good one to try

I used to go to Shane's every Sunday for brunch and this fabulous fellow named Tom was always my waiter. Even after I moved away and visited a YEAR later, he still remembered how I liked my coffee! Brunch was always tasty, do wish they had more dinner options (I'm picky) but it was always delicious and worth the wait. I really like this place.

I should give this place another chance considering it's only a couple blocks away from my apartment in Prospect Heights, but my first impression was not good. Cafe Shane is lucky that Tom's closes so early because with the prices and terrible service, I don't know how it would get any customers. It's cute and I really liked the atmosphere, but I figured the place was empty during peak dinner hour for a reason. The food took forever to come. It was one of those situations where you're stuck wondering if they had to run across the street to Key Food to pick up the ingredients... or, perhaps they were busy slaughtering the cow for my boyfriend's hamburger. I ordered a baked potato with black beans, cheese and bacon because it was the only thing that appealed to me, but for much less than $8, I could have made myself something much more palatable. I definitely recommend Tom's (if you're looking to eat before 5 Mon-Sat) or going over to Park Slope where there are tons of awesome restaurants. The Park Cafe's great if you stay away from the chicken souvlaki.

I've given this place more than enough chances over the last couple years and every time I go they disappoint. The first time we went the service was very slow and although they have a sign saying each dish is prepared individually and will take a while, it doesn't take 45 minutes to make 2 omelets especially since we were at one of 2 tables in the whole place.  The second time we went, a few months later, my boyfriend received the added addition of wax paper in his breakfast. The cook had added cheese to his omelet but hadn't removed the wrapping it came in. The final strike came on New Year's Day when my room mates and I had decided to go out for brunch but since the usual was closed and the line for Tom's was intimidating we went to Shane's. The wait staff was rude. The wait was long. We placed our drink orders and the waitress brought over half our drinks walked away and disappeared. When we waited 10 minutes and she hadn't returned we called over another server to see what happened. Finally the other half of our drinks came and she left again without taking our food orders. The owner came by and saw that we had empty or half empty glasses(depending on which wave of drinks you received) and called our waitress over so we could place our order. After waiting another half an hour, we finally got our food and she had gotten them all wrong. When I tried to explain she told us we were wrong and we were being charged for things we hadn't received I called the owner over. He made things right but I'm never going back again.  Apparently all their New Year's troubles occurred because two of their cooks had called out drunk and so they were under staffed.
