The most interesting man in the world sez: "I don't always have breakfast on Broadway, but when I do, I eat at Cafe Septieme."
Shame it's closed. It was a great breakfast spot, one of the few places on Broadway to offer an early breakfast with table service. -

The dishes at Cafe Septieme here are hit or miss. The winners: (1) the sauted calamari is amazing and for that alone, I'll keep coming back (second only to the calamari at Zig Zag); and (2) the Spaghetti Carbonara is also quite tasty, but definitely on the heavy side. Not for dieters!
The losers: (1) the French onion soup is BLAND CITY. The color is a dead giveaway though. Instead of a rich, deep brown, the broth was golden. It didn't even come topped with sliced French bread with melted Gruyere broiled in the oven! Just some nasty croutons floating in the soup; and (2) the beet salad is gross. The herb dressing has an overpowering rosemary flavor and aroma that you cannot escape from. I had a couple bites and pushed it away.
Service at the bar was friendly and attentive. The prices are middle of the road. I'll probably be back.Listed in: Bunneh on the Hill

So a group of us do brunch about once a month. There typically are 10 of us. This always seems to present some issue because finding seating for 10 on a Sunday morning for brunch isn't exactly easy. After waiting for over an hour across the street at Table 219 (despite their estimate of only 30 minutes) and being treated rudely while waiting, our tummies were a grumbling. Standing outside we were discussing whether to all just go get bagels and call it a day, but that would ruin the standing tradition. Instead we sent a scout across the street to Cafe Septieme to see how long the wait would be? Oh 10 people at 11:45 on a Sunday? Right away!
So there was a migration across Broadway. By the time we managed to cross the street the fabulous servers here had pushed together 3 tables and had place settings and water waiting for us.
The staff here was great and willing to work with us. They split our bill - into 6 different checks - with no complaints! They managed to serve us all drinks and food correctly even with all the little special orders. And they brought us lots of free, yummy, bread!
The food was decent. I personally thought my breakfast burrito was pretty yummy, even if there was only egg inside. The sauce was delicious. Everybody else at the table seemed to find their food acceptable, despite some saying it was a bit greasy. The bloody marys were decent but a bit lacking in spice for my taste. Chances are we will be back here again sometime soon. -

Great Brunch!! I love the fact that so many places are starting to serve breakfast til 3pm - it's perfect for those of us who are NOT morning people. : )
The coffee was delicious, the ketchup is homemade (it has a little zing to it like they use sundried tomatoes too), the toast is rustic -yum! The juice tastes fresh squeezed.... and it wasn't expensive!
The staff was kinda slow and didn't come around often enough to refill hungover, caffeine-deprived selves, but that would be my only criticism. Oh... well, and the bathroom is kinda creepy. It reminds me of something out of The Shining.Listed in: Brunch You Say??

It's really only 2 stars, but I'm giving them an extra star because I can't blame them entirely. I'm going to have to take some of the responsibility for ignoring the "DO NOT COME IN AND EAT HERE" warnings:
1. When we looked through the windows, the place was practically deserted on a Saturday during lunchtime.
2. In addition, the rooms were really poorly lit. Relying on sunlight was definitely not enough to brighten the room.
3. The "NOW WITH LOWER PRICES" signs outside.
Still with these signs, we said, "What the heck. We should be a little more adventurous." So we proceeded inside. With the same mentality, we ordered the specials of the day -- I ordered the Chef's Frittata, which is a slightly burnt omelette consisting of 90% potatoes + 10% everything else (some sort of processed meat product and mushrooms). And my sister ordered the pasta special -- the pasta with chipotle sauce, which was an incredibly bland pasta and to top it off -- the portion size was teeny tiny!
At first when we went inside, we saw their cake stands and refrigerators full of desserts that really tempted us. However our entrees were enough of a let down that we decided to go across the street to get pastries from a coffee shop instead.
Overall, the food was edible, but definitely below average. This place definitely reinforces the old adage, "you pay for what you get" and a personal adage, "stay boring, don't be adventurous." -

Once at Cafe Septieme, I told a friend of mine, "Don't look to your right but there's a woman over on the other side of the restaurant who looks JUST LIKE ME!" She giggled quietly and told me, 'Um, that's a big mirror so you're probably seeing yourself!' Good times.
I love the ox blood red walls of this place, esp. at night and when it's cold outside. I used to live across the way on Harvard St. so I used to come here for breakfast or coffee at night.
After experiencing all the great Bay Area restaurants, I can say in retrospect that my feeling about this place was a bit over-inflated.
That said, they make their own ketchup, you can draw on the table paper, the coffee will keep you running all day, and they used to make a nice beet rotini pasta.
I think this is a great place for later evening dessert/coffee, midweek breakfasts, and late lunches.
The four stars I give Cafe Septieme have more to do with nostalgia than anything else. Still, it's better than most places on Broadway. -

Some people get Septieme; some people don't.
I have whiled away many days at Septieme; it always makes me feel safe and cozy (or maybe that was the wine? or the nice waiters?).
In summary; this is what makes Septieme one of my favorite places in the 206:
1. homemade mayonaise and ketchup
2. Rodney
3. it is a place that a gal can go and drink some wine and read her book and not feel like sleazy dudes are going to bother her.
4. perfect bacon
5. blood red walls
6. not hipstery, not yuppie, not fancy, not divey
7. they'll let you sit around and read for hours
I love you, Septieme. Thanks for being perfect.
p.s. someone commented on the retro table tops. They are tragic. Septieme used to have white linens with paper over each table. very classy looking. but, to cut costs they just had to abandon their linen service. so, go eat there a lot so that they don't go out of business. -

I think this place is better when it's dark. Since it's almost summer (yay!) it was still light out when we arrived at 7:30. The decor simply looked like oddly painted red walls with raggedy booths lined up the side. The first booth we sat at had a big ol' hole smack in the middle of it. Not so comfy.
The food itself was ok. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to go back for either.Listed in: Capitol Hill - A Seattle…

Overpriced, mediocre cafe food with shoddy service. My husband had a sandwich made with tuna salad well past its prime, and my chicken dish was beyond overcooked. Besides one other customer, we were the only ones in the restaurant and the waiter took forever to refill our glasses (he had a friend in the back that apparently required far more attention).
Cafe Septieme is the suck. -

I like the ambience here, very chill and usually not too busy. The first time here, I had a great sandwich - flank steak - and i loved it. My companion had a turkey sandwich and he gobbled it up too. More recently, I had dinner here, and I was pretty disappointed.
I had seared albacore tuna - but "seared" it was not ... Instead, the fish was basically cooked (and dry as hell) all the way through ... the sauce it came with was pretty gross (but a Dick's milkshake afterwards helped "wash" it down !)
meh - I'll come back for the sandwiches, or to drink coffee. Otherwise, many other good dinner choices in the area ... -

I had breakfast here twice.
I really don't recommend the sausage. I'm such a sucker for sausage, even though it was nasty the first time I was hoping that it would be better the second time. Nah still tasteless.
Potatoes were really good! With a cajun flair or something flavorful.
I asked for ketchup and the waiter told me the red paste on my plate was ketchup. It wasn't, I think they ran out of ketchup and used some tomato paste and some seasonings- all I wanted was some ketchup!
Other than that, breakfast is cheap, and they make way better potatoes compared to Julia's. -

Sit at the bar with Rodney, he is Super nice!
The food is a bit pricey and the desserts are a bit dry but the place is cute and we like to support local businesses. I have been there when their has been a long wait for food and when it has been super fast. I think it is hit or miss a bit with the items on the menu. I'll keep going there because of the nice bartender and the food. Breakfast is nice and rustic and the items like flank steak sandwich or burgers are seasoned nice but you have to have an open mind when you go here. Don't be scared to try a new place once or twice you never know you may find a nice little place that is fun to go to and people watch. -

I've come here multiple times for breakfast, and I always get the basic eggs/toast/potato breakfast. I love it, because of the homemade ketchup and the potatoes, sooo good.
*I came here once for a latin night party, and it was kind of lame. The DJ played what sounded like one continuous bad techno song, and then it turned into a drag show. eh. -
Review from Beck N.
Went here for brunch on Labor Day - simply because they were the only place open without a bigass line (which should have been a pretty big indicator). The ox blood walls were a bit creepy as were the strange photographs on the walls. The photos were of dolls & manikins & were quite disturbing (one of the dolls looked as though it had those clouded over eyes that come from being strangled).
Aside from the creepy-ass decor, the food was pretty ok. I had the brioche toast, which was nice & extremely heavy -- sufficiently filled me up for the rest of the morning. The waitstaff was also kinda slow... -

Completely, thoroughly mediocre. Went on a Friday night and there were many empty tables. My friend lives nearby and has never eaten there, she's heard the desserts are good but hasn't heard much about the food. It's really dark in the restaurant. We ordered soups. My friend was disappointed with the french onion, she said the broth wasn't rich, there was no melty cheese, and it was like chicken soup with onions. I had the tomato chevre bisque which had a strange consistency and earthy taste.
She got the special, pork medallions, which were rated, "Eh, ok." I had the Septieme salad, which was supposed to be candied walnuts, gorgonzola cheese, with an orange balsamic vinaigrette. The walnuts were definitely not candied, the cheese tasted like chevre (perhaps they had left overs from the soup) not gorgonzola, and the lettuce was limp and kinda gross. I didn't taste any orange in the vinaigrette.
We split a macaroon for dessert and it was decent, but would have been much better had it not been chilled from the dessert case. Macaroons, like fine wine, need to breathe a bit and warm so the coconut is a bit gooey.
We both agreed for the price the food isn't worth it. I would pay something like 8 bucks for a mediocre salad and soup, but not twice that price, and it really isn't worth going back there again. -

The boy and I were starving and couldn't decide where we should eat. We'd seen some so-so reviews of Cafe Septieme but we decided to give it a go and see what we thought... and my thoughts? Meh.
It was okay. I ordered a veggie burger, which comes on a kaiser roll with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and onions on the side, as well as a few condiments (tarragon mayo, "spicy relish," and something resembling marinara). It all tasted fine, but it was just a little boring. I get more excited about my frozen Amy's veggie burgers & mustard in my own kitchen. (Granted, the blandness may have also been the result of a lack of cheese - cheese was an option, but I'm watching calories so I passed it up.)
The boy had the flank steak sandwich, which, because I don't like steak, I didn't try. I asked how it was and he said it was "okay." I know he was still sort of hungry after finishing it.
The service was a little iffy. The server was very nice, but sort of slow. It took awhile for our food to arrive, and then it took forever to actually pay - first it took awhile to get the check, then for them to take our money, and then for them to bring it back. We certainly weren't in a hurry, but it was still a little frustrating.
Pluses? We got to sit outside and it was CHEAP - only about $16 for both of us. I won't be in any great hurry to come back, but I'm not opposed to it, either. -

Cafe Septieme is in a great location and sits across from, next to, and nearby a TON of other restaurants. It's a great spot in the summer because of outdoor seating. In the winter it's also nice because it's cozy inside and there are lot s of tables. But because of it's location to other competition - I'd expect it to stand out a little more than it does.
I don't dislike the place by any means but it's not amazing. I've had their wine (yum) and their appetizers and dinners. Nothing was impressive but everything was tasty and reasonably priced. As the 3-star review dictates, it's "A-OK." -

Went here on a date that had gone sour, but I'm not gonna fault the cafe for it. That just means I have to go back to http://PlentyofFish.com.
Anyway, we just hit up the place for dessert and a cocktail. I had the tres leches cake which was very different from the tres leches cakes I had growing up in SoCal. Not that it was bad. I actually liked this one better. It wasn't wet and syrupy like the other tres leches cakes I have had, and I liked the whipped frosting on top as opposed to the overly sweet dulce de leche that sometimes covers it.
The guy I was with had marionberry cheesecake which was also very good. I generally prefer plain cheesecakes as opposed to those with fruit toppings or candy swirls, but this one was extremely smooth and creamy, so I have to give it props.
There were so many other desserts in the case that looked absolutely fantastic, but unfortunately I only had room to try one. It was also completely filled with many cakes that had yet to be cut into, which seems kind of weird now that I think about it--we were there at almost midnight and I would have expected that there would be very little at that hour. Maybe that was the shipment for the next day? Who knows.
Definitely a cute place and I'd consider going there again if I could be assured that the guy I was with wouldn't be there at the same time. Then again, the tres leches cake and my adventurous spirit might just get me out there again regardless of who turns up. -

Ah, Septieme! Back when Kurt owned the place I was a regular here. Most afternoons I dropped by to have a piece of cake, some coffee or cocoa, and to work the crossword puzzle. And Joe, Mike, Robert and I brunched here on most Sundays.
Quirky; definitely unassuming; low-key. Decent, simple yet solid food. -

The polenta porridge is a nice, comforting breakfast here, and the atmosphere is mellow and good for lounging on weekdays.
Unfortunately, the seats are awkward - the booths are short and low to the ground with high tables, and are awkward for all but 6'+ folks with short legs.
I've more than once sent back a glass of water because the glass was dirty.
The women's restroom wall colors make me nauseous so I try to avoid having to go to the bathroom there. -

I've been back to Cafe Septieme recently, and I feel that a 5 star rating is just a bit too high.
Now, the desserts are great. If I want a yummy dessert place, I may just come here after dinner for a quick take-out order.
The rest of the food was just OK, and the service was pretty slow despite only having a few patrons. Definitely a mellow place, but I'm most likely to go for the desserts.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Five stars for the German chocolate cake! A slice is enormous and smothered in sugary, coconuty frosting. Once, I hit upon a piece that had been sitting in the case for too long, and that was unfortunate. But when a fresh piece just cut from a new cake arrives on your table, it is heaven!
I don't know why this place isn't more crowded during late night happy hour - the beer selection is decent and a large glass of dark brew is the perfect complement to chocolate cake! -
Review from Sarah A.
Had lunch here today. It's not a bad option for a $7 sandwich if you want to sit down. I had the turkey on focaccia. They used good turkey breast which was nice. Butter pickle ruined the whole pickle experience but whatev. BF had the Chicken club which was better. Also had hot chocolate which was really yummy, though real whip cream would have made it better. Finished with the Tiramisu cake. Tasted decent but we soon realized it was at least a few days old. The marscapone cheese icing wasn't too fresh. Final bill was about $30 so not bad at all. Service was slightly better than typical capitol hill wait staff.
The three stars is also based on the fact that the Womans bathroom was pretty nasty. Water (?) all over the floor and globs of hair. And the girl in before me peed on the seat. Not their fault for the pee but overall cleanliness was lacking. -
Review from Bert M.
Maybe it makes me a snob, but I actually expected more. My chicken sandwich was low on chicken and high on giant bread roll. It came alone with no side dish. Boo. Poor lonely chicken sandwich.
The decor was confusing. Some had sort of dark wood European bar feel. Nice and cozy. And then, the tables were straight up pink with little turquoise boomerangs as though a 1950s diner had once occupied this spot and the tables missed the memo to move out. My husband said they usually have tablecloths. That would help.
Also, I docked a star because, though there's no smoking allowed in the restaurant or at the small strip of tables outside in front, there's nothing stopping a frat guy who wants to stand just outside the barrier for the narrow strip of tables talking to his buddies while chain smoking through your entire meal. Cough. Choke. And we were INside.
These things, except the lonely chicken, seem possibly situational, and I'd give it another try if I were in the area again. -
Review from Eugene O.
This is the best place to people watch in Capitol Hill, which is quite a fun thing to do when you're relaxing on a Saturday afternoon.
The homemade cakes and desserts are by far some of the best. Not only do they have an excellent variety of flavors (I always vouch for anything German and chocolate), they are generous on the portions and make it easy and fun to share.
I wouldn't say the service is super attentive, but the servers are always kind, non-intrusive and helpful. You can easily tuck yourself away here with a good book or a conversation and not be bothered. -

Dinner without dessert is a big problem for me, which is why we happily stumbled into this place (mind you we were stuffed and this was the closest place to our car) but then again, it must've been the beautifully lit dessert case with all the towering cakes and tortes that beckoned for us to come in too.
BF and I ordered the Espresso Chocolate Bundt Cake and Trifle and washed it down with 2 coffees. Our server who also happened to man the dessert counter as well proudly told us that they've been here for 13 years, and after one bite, I knew why. Sweet bliss!
My first time here and I'm eager to try this place again for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. All I know is, when I do, I'll be ordering dessert. -

We stopped in tonight for dessert with a friend. We'd been ogling the dessert case for a while now while strolling down Broadway and finally decided to swing in and give it a try. The waitstaff was friendly and seated us right away.
The coffee was very good. We ordered a slice of German chocolate cake and tres leches. The German chocolate was deemed too sugary, but the forkful I had was moist and good, sugar be damned. The tres leches was devoured in a flash while I glared over my cup of coffee with Sweet n Low (diet city, pop.1).
The only problem was that we weren't asked if we wanted refills on coffee until we were ready to leave. That shouldn't happen in an almost-empty restaurant. Still, I'd come back and try dinner sometime. -

Changing this to a 3 star. Went over the weekend, they were not overly busy, asked for more ketchup 2 different times to no avail, asked for a lime in my soda... nothing... had to stand up to get someone's attention to pay.. maybe they were short staffed...
This is one of my favorite places for breakfast or lunch on the weekend. They have a to die for grilled portebello sandwhich with homemade ketchup! YUMMY.
The staff is friendly and willing to make modifications, not that I am high maitenance, but hate melon on a fruit plate. -

I went to Cafe Septieme in 1997. It stuck in my mind for the 4 years it took for me to return to Seattle. This is a truely good restaurant and the deliver on a very surreal level. Everything about it is smart and well crafted - like a piece of art that you totally get (without to have a gallery manager explain it to you).
ThumbsUP: Lattes in a bowl and french toast breakfast from heaven
ThumbsDOWN: Dont go as often as I would like to -

*Sigh*, I really want to like thisplace, with it being so cute and stuff. I met up with a friend yesterday for dinner and decided to come here since none of us had ever been there, and the night was nice enough to warrant eating somewhere with a patio. Eh, not a great idea. I thought the place was virtually empty because of the time (we came in at around 7pm), but now I know better.
We picked a table outside, and the waiter brought us our menu. I look at the prices and right away set my expectations according to what the price is. My thoughts were "this better be really good", especially when you see offerings like gnocchi with chard and pine nuts, saffron bisque and mahi mahi.
I ordered a focaccia burger and the saffron bisque, while my friend got the gnocchi and french onion soup. I want to like the bisque, I really, really do, but it was really... lumpy. And overly sour, like the chef doused it in vinegar. The burger was nice, and the portion was big, it's just not something that sets them apart. They did really well with the gnocchi, I thought the pesto sauce was well seasoned though my friend was a bit dissapointed by the lack of meat (which was totally his fault for not reading the menu, I'm not holding that against the cafe)
However, the service was slow. Ridiculously slow for a place that only had a few patrons and the fact is, it matters a lot when I'm not getting my food in a reasonable amount of time. Dinner ended up taking more than an hour and a half. I want to like the cafe, but it was a dissapointing first visit. -

I have a long history with Septieme. My best friend and I used to come here for brunch in the early 2000's, then a friend of ours worked there for a while. I've always liked the breakfast and lunch menu, but only recently tried the dinner menu. It was okay, not as good (I feel) as the breakfast & lunch, but better than some other places. The dinner is definitely overpriced, though the breakfast and lunches are reasonable.
The ambiance (especially on a rainy afternoon) is one of my favorites in Seattle. Having a small booth to myself, enjoying a coffee and reading a book is a pastime I have indulged in on more than one occasion.
The service is hit or miss. I usually have good service in the mornings and afternoons, whereas evenings are pretty inattentive, and sometimes bad. -

Decided to check this place out for lunch yesterday. It was great. Good service. Good food, Delicious looking desserts and great staff.
I got a flank steak sandwich with a salad. And a root beer! When I got my plate, I wondered how I would ever eat all that food. And where was my bread? But I found the bread hiding under my steak. It was Delicious. I ate every bite! My steak was a bit dry and I wished for something to dip it in. I considered my rootbeer, but decided against it. Maybe I didn't eat it fast enough, or maybe it was a bit over cooked.
Check the bottom for the daily special, that's how I decided on the steak sandwich. It was half off the normal price.
My bf got the chef omelet and it was filled with mushrooms, cheese and bacon. He also got a side salad.
We both cleaned our plates. And were too stuffed for dessert. We'll have to visit again to take advantage of the freshly baked desserts. -

We end up at Cafe Septieme quite alot, and are always pretty happy. This is a great option for breakfast. The veggie frittata for brunch is great. Their vegetarian selection is a bit slim, but I pretty much always get the Saffron Bisque (mmmmmmmm) soup and either the beet or septieme salads. for meat eaters, favorites are: gorgonzola burger and the flank steak. Our favorite waiter, Elio, went to The Buck (so sad) but Rodney is still there. Mostly the service is good, except when you get 'the puppy' as your server. Flighty airhead, write down our orders!
Much love for this place. Ask for the Klloyd Nut 3000, our signature drink! -

I ate dinner there last night with two friends (V-day).
We were seated promptly and given waters. It took a little while for them to get our order, but even longer to bring out the food and (when we were obviously ready to leave) too long for the check.
The food was mediocre. The soup was luke warm and the eggplant sandwich was a big disappointment. I think my friends enjoyed their meals, though.
They weren't busy, considering how slow the service was. And it looked as though a family of one of the bussers was there eating, because at least 2 employees went over there to chat and sit down for minutes at a time. Although I think it's fine for people to enjoy time with their families while they are at work, work comes first and I felt like our time spent there was effected by a lack of effort. -

also, their polenta is really good. a little dry (but isn't polenta suppose to taste dry?) but good.
all the other dishes looked good, but i only ate the polenta appetizer.

it is THE BEST PLACE to people watch. Seriously, there are some good looking people on Capitol hill and the eye level candy is sweet.

i came here once with a friend. we read about this place in the Village Voice- so we thought it would be a interesting place to check out.
it's got just the right amount of people in there... not so loud or annoying- the staff is pretty attentive and helpful- the menu was so-so for my palette, so we settled for a basic entree. it wasn't fantastic, though.
the ambiance and bistro-esque feeling is charming.Listed in: I LEFT MY HEART... in SEATTLE

when you go there on a hot sunny day, if you sit at a table just inside the sidewalk seating doors, the breeze hits you just so and it's very nice indeed.
the food, however, is just ok. i had the eggplant sandwich and while i have to give them props for not making the texture rubbery, it wasn't very flavorful nor as satisfying as i thought it would be...
i've had breakfast here as well and if i'd rather go to the b&o, quite honestly. -

I used to really enjoy this place, but ever since they fired their manager Vance Wolfe the service and quality has really gone downhill. It takes forever to get service even when the place is empty. After a bad experience I had with the food in the late summer of 2006 I never went back.

Flank steak sammie oh so yummy! Tres leche cake oh so I think I just wet myself! Or did I? But unfort because of the owners belief in not supporting his workers who are immigrants and march in a little protest for basic human rights (the owner is a Mexi immigrant himself) I can no longer eat here nor his other place on Broadway. Sorry mi amigo but you are an uncle Tom. I know that this review is very long in coming sorry :(
