"Bonjour!" exclaim the sweet girls behind the counter.
I think I have a 10 minute conversation with one of the girls about how to properly pronounce "Nicoise" in french...I still can't...but, really appreciate the effort. (Ni-swa?)
---AMBIANCE---
Sitting here now in this brightly painted little cafe on the corner of Solano and San Pablo Avenue, I feel very cheerful! Why? Because...it's so bright in here! Bright yellow and blue (I feel my Cal blood tingling..), and cute straw chairs with little tables with clippings of France sealed underneath.
And yes, they are playing french music.
----FOOD/DRINKS---
Just ordered the Nicoise Tuna Sandwich on fogusse (type of bread..can't pronounce that either. "fo gau"? wait..no...that's fat liver.. ). Costs: $6.25
- The bread is toasted and quite tasty and the tuna itself is prepared well. Nice savory flavors. LOVE the cute little pickles on the toothpicks =D.
With a side salad and raspberry vinaigrette. Costs: $1.85
- Wish it came WITH the sandwich rather than the extra cost...it's really just the Costco spring mix..(which I'm very familiar with since I buy it all the time!)
They also offer combo's of coffee + baked goods, such as a 16oz, Double Shot Latte and you get a cookie! for $6. Haven't taken advantage of that, but seems neat.
Ah yes, and indeed, Ici Ice Cream.
---FREE WI-FI---
+ Lots of outlets
---HOURS---
6am-12am!
I'd even drive a little further pass 33 Revolutions Cafe for these hours!
---PARKING---
There's unlimited hours of parking in the residential area if you're willing to walk about 3 blocks =D. Always a plus.
And that is all. Merci!
$1.50 for a small coffee and I'm ready to work with free wi-fi anytime between 6am and midnight EVERY, SINGLE DAY! (you have to get the password at the counter) Plenty of outlets, enough little tables and a friendly, bumbling owner (and staff) that greets you in French.
One downside is that it's sometimes unusually warm inside due to lack of A/C and poor circulation. But I'm okay with a little discomfort for a place that opens so early and closes really late.
However, I don't eat the food, so I can't vouch for that. One star for service, another one for free wi-fi and 2 more for the great hours. It's impossible to find a cafe open past 6pm in Albany!
Solid after spot when hitting the many bar counters along the San Pablo strip....
What makes this place great is it is open late. They have a full espresso bar and they make the yummiest coffee drinks. You've been dancing since happy hour and didn't get a taco at Totsy? Have a ham & cheese sandwich here! Sorry that's a ham and brie sandwich - whatever it's still really good. My typical late night order: mexcican mocha with a few of the french macaroons. Service is friendly and efficient. Sometime I hope to check the place out during daylight...
I don't know if this is happening with anyone else, but the wifi at St. Honore is driving me crazy. I have a hard time connecting whether I have the right password or not. Since I often work in cafes, this knocks St. Honore down a star.

Bon jour! This place is cute and heartfelt, and I'm going to give it four stars despite the fact… Read more »
Sadly, this place suddenly went out of business due to money. The coffee, pastries, and friendly staff were really nice. It was great have a neighborhood cafe on that corner. Hopefully, Paul can continue to market his coffee and pastries at the El Cerrito Farmer's market on Tues/Sat. Best wishes, Paul -- don't give up!
To preface this review, I'd like to state that I am a broke ass college student.
Now that we are all on the same page, let's begin.
The little corner cafe is cute, clean, and convienient. Which is important. It is quiet, small, but not claustrophobic. There seem to always be people here, but never seems too busy. The wi-fi is free and steady and is a very major plus.
The pastries always look so cute and well presented. The prices are a little bit steep, but nothing completely insane.
A must try for hot days is the frog fuel ice cream. I am fascinated by things that I have never seen before, and ice cream that references amphibians? I'm all over it. It's a coffee ice cream with a yummy twist (that was cheesy, I know, but I don't care. It was worth it).
I bought a bagette this afternoon. When I went to use it, I needed a cold chisel and hammer to get through the crust. I phoned about the problem and the employee didn't care. She just hung up. Complete lack of civility. Least they could have done is to replace it for me. On another occasion I had an Americano and with very little water added to it as I wanted it strong. It was weak and tasted like cricket pee and when I brought it back, they had nothing to say. Either the staff just can't do an espresso or they use inferior coffee. I don't know.
Last time I go there. Acme is better anyway for bagettes anyway, and you certainly can go elsewhere for a decent made espresso. I think they are just inexperienced and the masses just don't know a good coffee or bagette.
My favorite place to work-from-home is just down the street!
Friendly workers, free wi-fi (with purchase), and awesome hours...not much more I could ask for in a neighborhood cafe.
Still not quite sure how the name is pronounced though.
The coffee is to die for and the price is great. large cup 2 dollars and 1.50 for a small. Cant beat that! the pastries are yummy. mmmmmmmm and the poached egg and fresh baguette! The workers have always been friendly to my family and me! the owner always seems to know all of his customers by name which I find very personable. They are open 7 days a week till midnight. that rocks lol!
The coffee is decent, the music unobtrusive and the wi-fi reliable ... mais je n'aime pas the way the employees hang around chatting behind the cash register, while dust-bunnies, coffee stains and overflowing trashcans and bus-tubs can be seen all over the place.
They need a manager on duty there to crack a whip.
This is where I'd get my early morning caffeine fix before my commute to work. Their espresso drinks are pricier - $3.85 for their smallest size but you get a Starbucks Grande size cup. Their mochas and lattes are pretty good but Peet's still is the only coffee that gets me crunked in the morning. The first time that I had one of their croissants was really good - very buttery and doughy but the second time I got one, it was so-so. It didn't have the same pizzazz the first go around. If you go in there often, get a frequent buyer card.
This is a wonderful cafe. The ici ice cream is wonderful and I appreciate the normal-sized portions (especially for my young daughter). The Frog Fuel ice cream is the best coffee ice cream I've ever had. The pastries are at times heavenly, though not consistently so. Wonderful and friendly workers.
My biggest complaint is the location - San Pablo and Solano is just too hectic.
Okay this place is awesome!!! The owner is a cute guy that is always friendly and helpful! They offer excellent coffee, amazing pastries, sandwiches, salads and ummmm my favorite ICI ice cream. Yeah you heard right Ici ice cream with 7 flavors including their very one flavor. It's refreshing to see a local establishment doing well and offering coffee that can easily complete with the Pete's. So give them a shot and support the local economy!!!
I love this place! It is colorful, lively and friendly. I love that they greet you with "Bonjour!" and mean it. I usually go for the Mexique latte and a croissant, but have also had their yummy french onion soup. Great addition to this corner of town.
The best place for espresso in Albany, CA. The patisserie is mostly from the Artisan Bakery of Berkeley, which is very good. Free WiFi is present. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable in their domain. Only about 10 tables.
wireless internet - check
power outlets - check
Normally, these two prerequisites would only warrant a 3 or 4 star rating. What makes CSH amazing is the friendly staff, cheap prices, and amazing availability. Any place that provides coffee from 6am to midnight 7 DAYS A WEEK should get an extra special star. If you're working late and get a hankering for alcohol, the Ivy Room's next door and has happy hour from 5-8.
This 5 star rating is mostly for the pain au chocolat. Honestly, it was perhaps the best I have ever had outside of France. The croissant was moist & flaky, and the chocolate was rich & delicious. Really perfect. Cafe Saint Honore also carries Fair Trade coffee, a definite plus in my book.
I love this place! It is exquisitely charming! Whenever we visit my friend who lives in Albany, we stop here. The owner is the most wonderful man ever, it is clear he has a deep love for the french culture, greeting us with a kind "Bonjour".
First, its clear he's committed to getting his customers what they want. My vegetarian friend wanted a sandwich, but the vegetarian options were all sold out. So he handmade her a fresh sandwich to appease her dietary restrictions.
Then there's the pastries---endless platters of classical french treats, freshly made, never have any of us encountered such an array of delicious treats.
The last time we went he offered us the sandwich card deal thing, knowing we weren't from around there, so we could bring it home to our friend who does live there. Lovely!
The decor is perfect, bright yellows and blue, against the bay area morning fog and cold=perfect, and conducive to a nice conversation with friends in the morning.
Some of the other reviews say the workers can be rude and incompetent, but our past experiences have proven otherwise.
Oh and last but not least, it is all delightfully affordable, ten dollars got me:
A sandwich, lemonade, Apple-Cheese Pastry & Chocolate Pastry (sorry, I can't recall the french names, even if he went over them with me) and a freshly baked baguette.
Drink recommendations: Chai Tea Latte, White Mocha, Iced Mocha.
There is a lot to be desired in the service area. One elderly gentleman stood at the counter for over five minutes and finally left without being served. I then observed the owner chasing him down, running across Solano Ave. and when he finally caught up to him (the light was long) it looked like he was pleading for the gentleman to return. I really felt sorry for the owner, but it was pathetic and desperate.
I wanted to be supportive so after trying their decent tasting coffee I recently ordered dinner, a small spinach salad and soup. What I got was a spring salad and a very, oily, beaded up luke warm ministrone soup. The cafe had run out of butter, so I dunked the baguette in the oily soup.
The deserts are so inconsistent that you really take your chances never knowing if you are going to get an overly sweet, oily, saturated fat, tasteless pastry. I can recommend the croissant.
The sweet looking counter boy cut me a gigantic slice of clafoutis. teehee. :) Immediate props.
Then told me the macarons were 85 cents. Let me repeat. EIGHTY-FIVE CENTS. And these weren't diminutive pinky-out versions, no, not like those snotty two-dollar types. (I'm looking at you, Miette!!) Hefty, biteable, chocolate-with-hazelnut-cream, deliciouuuus. Not perfect, and really, for the size and price, I wasn't expecting perfect. But definitely a good interpretation and worth the (ridiculously low) price I paid!
Oh and many many pastries were 25% off at night!! I had a fruit tart with a thin layer of chocolate snuck between the custard and the crust--mmm.
Will be back for the macarons and a taste of other sweets! And ICI ICE CREAM without the Ici lines? Ooo. Ah. Star off for the cramped space and wi-fi user giving me the evil eye for chatting. Hmph.
Why is divorce so expensive?
Because it's worth it!
Just look at that smile!

With that said, week five of my "divorce diet" has lead me to the surprisingly friendly, cute, clean and bright Cafe Saint Honore.
(Can I find a man like this too?)
For only $6 I had a fresh peach puree, a fresh salad with egg, toasted almonds, goat cheese and raspberry vinaigrette.
The clerk decided she took too long to make my salad (I didn't mind) so she popped a mini baguette in the oven and served it to me piping hot... for FREE!

You realize, of course, that this means I had a very well balanced meal: the fruit and veggie group, the dairy group, the nuts and grains group, and most importantly to me, the wi-fi group!
Everyone who knows me will tell you I LOVE FREE STUFF! Even before divorce I was a free-a-holic. The main reason I was determined to be a Yelper was because I wanted free parties with free food and booze!
So, not only did they give me free bread, but they always have free wi-fi, and it's the high speed good stuff too!
So what's not to like?
Married or not, sickness or health, richer or poorer: eat here!

the previous occupants haven't been too successful at the corner of solano and san pablo, but it looks like cafe saint honore is going to change the trend... they make some good coffee there... i love their hot cafe ole's... another plus is that they serve ici ice cream... ici even made a custom coffee flavor for them... the owner is very nice and courteous... business has definitely picked up... great place to enjoy a good cup of joe... h-100...
I personally wouldn't come here for food. Nothing seems very food oriented. However, the lattes are great and they're the only place in the area open late (until midnight). What is with this town closing up at 10 pm????
Good coffee, free wifi and friendly people. I'm a new regular (well, errrrr... for as long as I'm a student...).
The fact that they are open on Friday night, not a bar, and have free wifi gives them an automatic 3 stars.
I walked in to find a place warmly lit, plenty of places to plug in my macbook (they are uber apple friendly), aromas of coffee and cinnamon buns filling the air. Heaven!
The owner greeted my warmly, was great about giving me a decaf au lait (after 6PM no caffine) and a freshly out of the oven, warm frosting ooozing over it cinnamon bun. YUM! So far 5 stars.
That the decor is so cute, the bathroom clean, the owner nice enough to watch my laptop while I run to the bathroom were all bonuses. Also, did I mention they have ICI ice cream. It's like going to ICI but without having to wait in that ridiculous line. Truly I'm a HUGE fan of this place and cannot understand why anyone would rate it less than 3 stars. Seriously, open late, good coffee, clean and cute, FREE wifi! Go!
Read the review in the East Bay Express so was excited to try this place. I mentioned that I was a vegetarian and asked if the onion soup was made with beef stock. When they said it was, I ordered the broccoli-cheddar, only to have it arrive at my table with bacon sprinkled on top...and it was luke warm (borderline cold). It was supposed to come with a half a baguette and it didn't.
My wife's cheese and ham sandwich was made with large slices of bland white bread. The salad was nothing impressive.
The place is cute on the inside and it is cool that they have wifi. But it took probably 15 min to get very basic food served and it wasn't good food when it arrived. I'd skip this place.
Diminutive, cute, and quaint. A trifecta of adjectives I use to describe my appendage. Oh, and Cafe Saint Honore.
Located on the corner of Solano and San Pablo, this wonderful new addition to El Cerrito is open until midnight, the free wifi (noticing a trend here?) luring me to this phone carrier hot spot like a mosquito to the blue light of death, or a corrupt hedge fund manager to the new economic stimulus package. Take your pick. Parking is plentiful at the right hours and you're located at the start of Solano street, which is highly capable of satiating almost any ethnic craving you could possibly have.
Never mind the $2 tea or hotdog sandwiches. Ignore the silly tables that were not ergonomically designed for a laptop workstation setup. But pay attention to following phrase, because Cafe Saint Honore has a totomo kawaii password to get you onto the world wide web: frogfuel
Plenty of snacks, clean, and well lit, I was able to produce a decent amount of work without visual or audio interruption, thanks to my choice of seating away from the window and peace and quiet of respectful patrons. For a while, that is...
*Untz Untz Untz Untz*
WTF is that? I looked around on the street and did not see a Tahoe with tinted windows and dubs at the cross walk waiting for the light to turn green.
Further investigation produced the biggest drawback and the only chink (I'm Chinese, I'm allowed to say this as often as I want) to Cafe Saint Honore's armor: the shared wall with Ivy Lounge. Ivy Lounge belts out music that shakes my seat like a resonating bass tube rolling around the trunk of a low rider.
Listen, if I wanted to move my rump, I would listen to "Shake That" by Eminem and start dancing. I don't know if there is a sound ordinance, but wow, it reminded me of my college floor mate who played his music too loud, despite our begging and pleading for him to reduce the decibels during the wee cramming hours of early AM.
A bunch of us broke his radio, denied it, then moved. However, there is no logic in this setup, no valid reason, and it would just be me vs a pack of drunk locals. I can do the odds calculation of who would get his ass beat this time around.
Thank god for skull candy headphones. I still really adore Cafe Saint Honore.
Free wifi and some of their pastries are good. They open late, which makes it a good place for late meet-ups like boardgame nights. Unfortunately, if you don't like noise, avoid nights when there's a band playing next door (Ivy Lounge). It can be annoying.
Like others who have reviewed this cafe, I, too really wanted to like it. I love having a "not bar" open late in Albany. It's a nice sunny space and the owner really is quite nice and friendly. I'm still really hoping they can stay afloat in this risky economy.
However, the food and service leave much to be desired. On my first visit when the cafe had only been open for about a week, I went in hoping for some good coffee & croissant. The coffee I got, but the only pastries to be found was a half empty tray (uncovered!) of plain and slightly singed croissants. I don't know about you, but I like to see a little variety in the pastry department. At least a couple of choices. And certainly no burn victims! Suffice to say I passed on the pastry.
On subsequent visits things seem to get better. The pastries are showing more variety and they now live on covered trays. Then on my most recent visit I decided to try a sandwich. I wasn't expecting much, just a simple salami on baguette. First, I placed my order with a remarkably dim girl who must have just started working there that day. She was very slow helping the 2 ladies ahead of me and kept having to consult with the sandwich-making boy behind the counter with her.
Once the ordering ordeal was done I sat and waited...and waited...and waited. The ladies who were helped before me got their sandwiches after several minutes (to the cafe's credit, at least I could see those sandwiches were made fresh). Noticing that there was no further action behind the counter, I could tell that my order was not in progress. I had to go to the sandwich boy and ask if my food was going to materialize in the near future. He was clearly not informed that an order was waiting. He was apologetic and I appreciated that. However, when there are only 4 customers in the cafe, you'd think it would be easy to assess if everyone has been taken care of!
The sandwich itself was fine, but I had to take it to go since I wasted my time waiting around. It was a disappointing experience and I really hope they get their act together.
Sweet Jesus these are good little pastries!
I don't know the names of anything I'm eating, but each is more delicious than the last. All sorts of crunchy-creamy-salty-sweet deliciousness, with very sophisticated flavors, unlike anything I've ever had, anywhere. I don't care that the pastry just sits uncovered on the counter, or that my iced coffee is gigantic and not cold, or that the chairs are from IKEA -- pastry this good means an automatic FIVE STARS FROM SUE!
Also, the owner is enthusiastic, the wifi is free, the sandwiches are cheap, and my laptop feels welcome, all of which is a nice change from my previous cafe. Huzzah!
I really want to like Café Saint Honore. It's bright, cheery and could be a Francophile's dream. However, the two sandwiches I tried were really mediocre and overpriced for what they were.
The tuna niçoise sandwich I had did not resemble what niçoise is supposed to be. Absent were the anchovies, garlic, black olives and hard boiled eggs. The sandwich was basically tuna salad with a slab of cheese on it served on a baguette. Now, I'm fine with tuna salad, but if I order something special like tuna niçoise, I want at least something in it that's a step up from the usual tuna salad sandwich. And $6.75 seems a bit expensive for tuna out of the can.
Again, I want to like this place and it has some good points to it like being open until midnight, free WiFi and chess sets set up at several of the tables. They've tried to make it a hangout place, but personally I need good food if I'm going to log in a few hours at a place.
One thing that will probably bring me back is the Ici ice cream which they serve and even have a special flavor that's made just for the café. This means I don't have to go over to Oakland when I get a craving.
Skip the food and go straight for the ice cream case!
I love the casual atmosphere, the authentic food, the fact that the staff is friendly and greets you in French. At first I thought the place was too brightly lit, giving it a cold austere look that didn't suit the mood or the style. But in the past few months they've toned down the lights, or painted the walls, or something. Anyway, it has a much more comfortable feel. The coffee drinks are very good. They actually have cafe-au-lait, which I love. It is probably the only place in this town open until midnight, and they have free wi-fi.
When the place first opened, it had its pros (quiet, free wifi, open early, close late, inexpensive pot of tea, ICI ice cream) and its cons (crowded chairs and crappy food). Now I can list a lot more cons after coming here regularly.
I don't know what happened to the chill staff that used to work here, but the new staff disgusts me. One guy is constantly whistling while people are trying to work. The young women who work behind the counter like to be extra chatty with each other. I don't hear the usual French greetings when I walk in -- or the sweet goodbyes. The floors, tables, and dish bins, are filthy. Pastries on the counter are loosely covered with saran wrap so the ever-so-present flies are able to nibble and vomit their way along every pretty pastry. Drinks are always lukewarm and never the right size. The inconsistency of drink sizes can be disturbing. One week I pay $2 for a large, and the next day I'm paying the same price for a small. Dishes have cracks all over them, so when I almost finished my drink, I thought the black line in my cup was a regular crack. But when I reached inside to touch it, I realized it was .... A HAIR!
The paper signage taped all over the walls and windows distracts me. The music gets louder and louder each time I return and new customers can't seem to understand that through observation, they can learn the unsaid rules in the cafe: NO LOUD TALKING, NO CELL PHONE CONVERSATIONS.
The owner is still as friendly as can be, but unfortunately he hasn't seemed to notice that his once-cute and tidy cafe is turning into a teenager's filthy room.
For now, I'll be taking a break from this cafe to seek out places that are a bit cleaner and quieter. I'll be back in a month to check it out and post an updated review.
I don't usually review anything on Yelp until after I've had the opportunity to visit the business a number of times, but I'll make an exception in this case because I got such a good first impression, I thought I'd just get online and tell the world !!
The owners just opened up the shop very recently and you can tell because everything looks absolutely spotless, I mean the place is so clean, you could practically eat off the floor (but please don't :) !
If you are a francophiile, or just like to see something a little different, you're going to love the place. The have all kinds of little French inuendos happening in the shop from the product line they offer, to subtle and less subtle hints in the decoration of the place...
I even spotted a few jars of Nutella and Crème de Marrons (you REALLY have to try Crème de Marrons if you've never had it, I mean you just gotta try it, trust me!!! But if you do, just remember, easy does it, just a little at a time, because it's very rich!).
If you stop at Cafe St. Honore, one thing you can count on is impeccable, fast, and friendly service.
Since the shop is on my way to Costco, I know I'll be stopping there from time to time, so I'll I have to update you later on the little pastries and other food stuff they offer.
Right now, I think I'll just stick with the Holy Cow brew to go, but if you want to try something different, you can always choose from the dozen or so of varieties of coffee they have, six of which are Organic Fair Trade.
Did I mention they have Wi-Fi?
See you there! :)

Went in today for the first time. As others - loved the colorful decor and the owner is SO nice and friendly. This place really perks up the corner.
We ordered the frappacino (sp?) style drink - get the Mexique flavor. So creamy - yum. With our drinks, the owner brought out hot crossiants (buttery, flaky and according my half french husband - authentic) - ok that is something you aren't going to get anywhere else.
Didn't try the sandwiches but even if they aren't authentic, I'd rather go there than subway across the street and pay a little more for the ambiance and having a cute local business thrive.
I will go back to try the ice cream - I saw they have creme fraiche flavor.:-)
Five stars for just for the best macaron I've ever had in my life.
Just open two days with French pastries and sandwiches.
On a search for a good study place, our study group visited Cafe Saint Honore. This French themed cafe is adorable and perfect for a cozy study session. The gentleman who worked there was very warm and hospitable. I got into a good study flow working there. There was free wifi and the friendly atmosphere was a plus. Most cafes are blase about service and maintenance(usually because they can get away with the art house appeal) but Cafe Saint Honore is elegant, lovely and different.
Tres charmant! You are greeted and farewelled en français. The space is bright and cheery, painted white w/ blue and yellow accents. As others have mentioned, there is free wifi. Alan and I had lunch here today. You order at the counter, which has cases of tempting croissants and other pastries. He ordered a croque monsieur, which comes w/ a side salad and I ordered a curry chicken w/ chutney, at least I thought I did. Evidently she didn't hear me and we had to reorder it. Since we'd planned to share the sandwiches it wasn't a big problem. The croque was more a panini than a traditional croque, which is coated w/ egg and grilled*, but it was very good and I'd have it again. At $7.50 w/ the side salad we thought it was very reasonable. The curry chicken surprised us by being a warm chicken breast w/ chutney and salad greens rather than the curry chicken salad we had both expected. It was OK, but had little curry in evidence. It was also reasonably priced at less than $6. I had Mighty Leaf breakfast tea and the low fat milk I requested w/ it came foamed in a demitasse cup. Nice touch! Alan's latte looked beautiful. I'll return.
*After consultation tonight w/ our friends who are newly returned from France, I understand I was misinformed about the nature of a croque monsieur. No egg. I was sure I saw egg on the one Alan had in Paris that serves as his gold standard. I sit corrected.
When I came to this place for lunch I ordered the salami and brie on a buttered baguette with a side salad. I was disheartened when I saw that to prepare my lunch she grabbed a pre-made sandwich covered in saran wrap. But I figured that they probably made it that morning.
My sandwich was good, it had salami and a nice slice of brie. The side salad was just a spring mix with almonds and berries. I expected a bit more for the price, but the sandwich was enjoyable and not too filling. So, I'll probably be back.
It's a very friendly place. Open until midnight, quality coffee, and the owner is super friendly. Reliable, free wi-fi is a big plus as well! No complaints!
Ok I really like this place now. At 1st I wasn't that impressed but I do work right down the street & have gone several times & each time I go it gets better & better. I love the yogurt parfait & their fresh baguettes & croissants as well as their lemonade. The owner is always so nice & friendly as well as his staff. The bright colors & details inside make it an inviting atmosphere & the free wifi helps too. I don't drink coffee but their tea is delicious. Give them a try & see for yourself.
