My current favorite.  If you can share or can eat a good amount, do this.  Start with the quiche.  The daily quiche is always delicious.  Follow that with a sandwich.  The cold prawn sandwich is so darn tasty.  Getting a warm one somewhat eliminates the prawns subtle yet delicious flavor/texture. Then get whatever creme Brulee they have that day.  Mmmm...

Best things I've had here since the quiche/Creme brulee options change daily:

1) Salmon quiche followed by tomato basil quiche
2) cold prawn sandwich
3) Raspberry Creme Brulee

I first set foot in Cafe Rolle a year ago and I clearly remember being skeptical about how empty it was. The restaurant space is small with perhaps 7 small tables inside and 3 more outside so I was surprised to find the restaurant mostly empty at 7:30 pm on a Friday. But I got the Stacey's favorite and as soon as I bite into that warm baguette of magical goodness, all doubts were erased from my mind and I knew we had made the right decision to stay for dinner.

I've gone back multiple times since then. I was going once a week for a while and always I returned for my Stacey's favorite. I've tried the pate, the salmon sandwich, the chicken plate and while everything has been good, nothing quite hits the spot like the Stacey's favorite. Warm cheese, caramelized onions, tender beef.... what's not to like?

This has been a staple of my diet for a while and the one sandwich that my boyfriend always requests but I have a hard time giving it five stars. After it was featured on Diners, Drive In and Dives, business has greatly increased and there's often a long wait for a table. I'm sad that this precious little gem is no longer hidden but I knew it would only be a matter of time. I am also fine with the long wait because good food is worth it but I feel like my prized Stacey's favorite has decreased in quantity and quality.

I've gone back 3 times since they've been featured and each time there was something missing. Once the portion looked noticeably smaller and once there were only a few pieces of beef. I'm hoping that they are just going through an adjustment period and after hiring more help will figure it all out again, but until then, I stay at 4 stars.

A warm and crusty baguette filled with gruyere cheese, chicken, caramelized onions and tarragon mayonnaise. Oh. My. Gosh. Amazing!

I've been wanting to come here ever since I saw it on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, and I finally got to this evening. This cute little restaurant is located in East Sac off of H and 53rd St. and it's definitely a hidden gem. It's very small inside (Maybe 3-4 tables for four and 6-7 for two with a few outside) and we arrived at just the right time as people were waiting for tables, but they didn't seem phased by it. There appeared to be several couples in there that were regulars and the waiters and chef knew them by name.

We were greeted by such a friendly French waiter, the French words kept on rolling and it definitely made the atmosphere. The menu was pretty extensive and it was hard to decide. We picked the Foie Gras with French Baguette slices because it supposedly the best recipe in Lyon. It was good, but not quite to our tastes, however, I'm sure that it's amazing if you love Foie Gras!

I got the Chicken Croque Monsieur, which was, without a doubt, the most amazing sandwich I have ever had in my life and for $9.50 (I think, adding $1 extra to get it with caramelized onions), it was priced well too. My husband got the Stacy's Favorite, which was a hot sandwich on a baguette with sliced beef, caramelized onions, brie and garlic aioli. Also amazing. The way they cut these sandwiches up into bite size pieces is also a great idea as you're not trying to stuff half a sandwich down your throat and losing all the filling while doing so!

We indulged and got dessert and picked the chocolate mousse. Wow. It was so good!

This place is such a friendly and cute little restaurant with amazing food and amazing wait staff. Their hours are a bit limited, so make sure to bear that in mind but wow, I will be coming here time and time again!

I saw this place on triple d and I was really excited because it was in the city where I'm from. I came here with my boyfriend. When I entered the front door, I was taken back by an odor I couldn't make out. I believe it was the pate that was in the refridgerated case in the front?Eh, I can't hate on it until I had tried it. We got a shrimp appetizer. Delish! It was some cold garlicy shrimps with some cream sauce and slices of baguette. We both ordered the ham sandwish. It came out warm and crunchy! Yummo! It reminded me a lot of a Vietnamese sandwish but with lettuce and mayo. It makes sense since the French did colonzied vietnam! Love it! I'm drooling now... Lol

We were greeted by one of the cheeriest waiters I have ever had the pleasure to meet.  I don't know if it was his french accent, but he is definitely a top 5 waiter.  If the two waiter staff is reading this, its the one with the glasses.  If I had a restaurant, I would definitely try to woo him over.

They talk to you in French which is really cool so maybe you should open a french travel guide and go on page 1 to learn all the phrases you really need to know.  I'll help you.
1.  salut/bonjour
2.  ca va bien/ ca va comme ci comme ca/ ca va mal/ ca va tres bien
3.  merci

I ordered the special cilantro salmon and the bodaciousbabe got the regular smoked salmon sandwich.  It came out with mix greens.  Oh yah, as an appetizer, we got the foie gras.  The bread is really good.  I like cruncy hard bread.  The foie gras is an acquired taste.  I do not like liver in general and this is duck liver--its alrite.  The waiter was very attentive, using his peripheral vision to see that we were out of bread and brought us a fresh basket.  The sandwiches were pretty also.  The chef's salmon is his specialty and it does not disappoint.  Again, the bread is excellent.  My cilantro fraise was a little too overpowering.  I suggest you get the last numer on the regular menu.  My girlfriend's sandwich was really good.  The creme brulee is pretty good too.

Additional notes
-the waiter asked us if we wanted free coffee for no reason...i wanted to weep and give him a clap on the back
-the other waiter rarely smiles
-the chef sings and is really quirky...i love chaps like that

in conclusion, this is a place with a lot of personality.  Do not go here if you are socially awkward.

Like in the film Amelie, I like cracking the top of creme brulee with my spoon.

After reading Miika M's review of Cafe Rolle, I knew I had to come here. As a Sacramento native, I try to find a new place every time I return home to visit the family because there are only so many times you can go to the same old same old establishments. that you attended in high school.

We arrived around 11:45, just before the lunch rush at 12:30 or so. We were seated promptly at a rectangular 4top with postcards from France on the table. Around us, there are vintage posters for Perrier and a variety of other french products. There are carafes of still water on the table and we were seated by a little man with an accent and pointed mustache who reminded me of the standard eurotrash version of french.

In short, I loved the atmosphere from the start.

We started with their cold prawn appetizer over a bed of lentils. It was presented wonderfully with a dill creme fraiche and a french dressing that was so rich it was closer to holandaise sauce. The flavors paired so perfectly together and even though the appetizer usually only comes with 4 prawns, they gave us six because there were three of us splitting it. Quite nice of them.

For main courses, my mother had the hot prawn sandwich, my father had the cold smoked salmon sandwich and I had the hot smoked salmon sandwich. All were amazing in their own right but the salmon sandwiches were the winners without questions.

In the hot salmon sandwich, you have an amazing crusty baguette with so much melted gruyere and dill creme fraiche. The textures and flavors are absolutely perfect. However, in the chilled smoked salmon sandwich, you can taste the subtleties of the gravlox style salmon, smoked at the shop. It's not the overly salty commercial stuff you find at the grocery store, but it's subtle, flavorful and something special. I only found that same holandaise-esque salad dressing a bit too much on the side salad.

And for dessert, we had the raspberry creme brulee (the special). The sugar was just barely caramelized and cracked under my spoon. The sharp tang of the raspberries cut the sweetness and the texture of the custard was fantastic.

Great food and nice service would bring this place to 4 stars, but this place gets bumped up the extra for their deli counter. Granted, it only has three worthwhile items but damn they are worth it. $15 per pound for their house smoked salmon, $13 for their duck pate and $40 for their foie gras.

Damn, next time I have a dinner party in Sacramento, I'll make sure to do my shopping here!

There is nothing more welcoming than stepping over the threshold of a quaint little cafe and having the the lyrics of Edith Piaf alight upon your senses.

Enchanté!

On another visit back to my old stomping grounds I was invited to join a small part to Cafe Rolle.  Apparently I totally missed this establishment when I was out here and am duly kicking myself for another gem gone undetected.

For the quick lunch sit down, the perfect place to get a nice little sandwich amidst French accents swirling around you from the waitstaff and the chef in the back.  My choice today was the Hot Smoked Salmon sandwich with Gruyere cheese and topped with a basil mayonnaise.  This came accompanied with a nice side of mixed greens tossed in a light but spicy French Dijon vinaigrette.  The baguette was crusty and perfectly toasted warm and the smoked salmon tumbled out of the sandwich because there was so much piled under the melting Gruyere cheese.

I was never much of a mustard fan but Chef Rolle has done a fantastic pairing with something as simple as Dijon and made it enhance much of the simple flavors of his signature dishes.  The pate burst with flavor after a slather of it on the baguette.  I took bites of my salad between bites of my sandwich and the Dijon vinaigrette truly brought forth the smokiness of the salmon.

I've found my new inexpensive spot for a nice bite during the warm summer days in Sacramento and piqued with French charm.

i was a huge fan to la bonne prior to trying this place out. they're both really different. at la bonne u have the one-man band.. and at this place, i was instantly greeted by a french man and seated to my table. First time for that i must say! it's a cute little place with a few tables and a couple more tables in the patio. i came during lunch time and there was a few other other couples and a few other people coming just to read newspapers.

i dont remember what i ordered but both my bf's and my own sandwich were to die for!! i especially like how the chef cuts the sandwiches into 5-6 bite-sized pieces. there's also  side of salad that comes with the sandwich. after gobbling up the sandwich, i wanted more! so i tried the potato and thyme in creme appetizer, which was still good, but i'd rather have the dollar go towards another sandwich. heheh.

this was definitely one of the best/memorable services i had. the french man was soo polite i felt not up to par! i was really happy overall with the experience.

they also served some exquisite french meats deli-style. my bf was very enthusiastic seeing that they had foies gras

bill came out to ~$30 i think? worth it! but i'd still support la bonne at the same time too ... =)

If I could live next to a restaurant, one of them would have to be Cafe Rolle. Despite the parking lot having a 8 car capacity (and they share with some Yoga place next door), the restaurant is worth the short walk from your street parking. Cafe Rolle is surprisingly close to CSUS so if you were really hungry and were on the school campus, here's another great destination.

Onto the food! Some of the items that I recommend are the following:
* Smoked Salmon Sandwich (either hot or cold, but I recommend the cold)
* Stacy's Favorite (if I had gone often enough I couldn't made my own and had the waiter call it Derek's Favorite).
* Warm Poached Salmon Salad
* Foie Gras Salad
* Succulent tender prawns marinated in olive oil, garlic and herbs served warm or chilled with baguette and dill creme fraiche dipping sauce

Unlike most French places, the portions at this place are fairly decent and sometimes larger than expected. The smoked salmon flavor just melts into your pallet when served cold. Amazing how some simple ingredients at this place are turned into delightful explosions on your pallet.

Cafe Rolle is both a restaurant and a mini shop. I highly recommend purchasing some smoked salmon, some of their various cheeses, and maybe a baguette to go. Wine selections are nice. I'm rather picky with wine, so I usually cover myself with my own selection.

Service. The restaurant itself is very small and therefore the service personnel have an excellent view of everyone. The staff has always been helpful and eager to help. None of the snootiness that you will sometimes perceive French restaurants to have. They have been helpful in making recommendations and explaining some of their entrees.

Decor. Each table has a glass overlay. Underneath each glass overlay are a handful of postcard-like items which provide some entertainment while waiting for the food. The overall decor of the place is simple and aims to provide the ambiance of a small cafe.

Well, what else can I say about this place? The hours of operation are rather limited so try to make it within those blocks. They tend to get really busy two hours into their evening hours, so if you don't want to have to wait please arrive a little earlier.

The customer service is excellent. The waiter went above and beyond to make sure that we were happy and were apologetic due to the wait we had to endure in the sun. Upon ordering, they notified me that sadly my duck pate was unavailable and suggested the prawn appetizer which I gladly accepted. I ordered the foie gras sandwich and my friend ordered the Stacy's favorite. Everything was quite excellent. The waiter even took the appetizer off our bill since we had to endure a long wait and since my first choice appetizer was unavailable.

C'est bon!  Cute little cafe near Sutter Memorial in East Sac.  We love their warm smoked salmon with Gruyere cheese and crème fraîche on french baguette. Yummy! It arrived with a simple salad....$8.50 and the cold sandwich is only $5.50.  The owner smokes his own salmon and it's the highlight on the menu.  A dining companion had the warm ham and I had a little taste, it was good, but the salmon was better.

The food is reasonable and simple. The place is small and the service is slow, but it's worth the wait if you have the time. The place filled up fast during lunch, so either go before 11:30 or after 1 p.m.  especially if you have a large party. There's about less than ten tables inside and three little tables outside.  Almost no wait area.  Limited parking, we parked on the side streets.

Would definitely go back to try other items on the menu.

Finally writing a review for this place! I came out here way back in 2004 or so when they had just sort of opened. Today was really packed! Every table was filled. It makes me glad to know that small places like this are still doing okay despite the economy.

Well,  now that I am officially laid off, I have more time to meet for lunch. Sad part is, you usually have more money, or more time. Wish it could be both! So future eating is limited to either inexpensive eats or will be coupon-related.

I ordered the salade nicoise. Perfect summer lunch dish on a hot day. Topped with salmon, boiled eggs, parboiled green beans, kalamata olives and a tangy mustard dressing, it was served up with a basket of crusty bread. My only complaint was the slight fridge flavor from the sliced eggs and handful of wilted lettuce.

Amber got the cold smoked salmon cilantro sandwich with crusty bread. She really dug it, but was surprised to see that it was not cooked. FYI, they do have two types of smoked salmon: cured and cooked.

Our server hails from Grenoble and the owner is from Lyon. Great service too, by the way. Attentive but not obtrusive.

Took home a small serving of their duck pate. Pate du canard. $12 a pound.  I am so glad that they are finally wrapping that stuff in plastic wrap when it is in the refrigerated case. Years ago, it used to really pick up that awful fridge flavor. Upon tasting it, you know, it was just okay. They do have foie gras, maybe next time I will try that! After I got a job, that is.

I came here on September 22, 2009 for a quick lunch. Everything tasted fine. The salmon was good and the lamb was excellent. When it was time to pay I gave the waiter an entertainment book coupon for a free entree up to 9 dollars. After the bill was reduced and rewritten, the price came to nearly 15 dollars. I paid with a credit card and left a 5 dollar cash tip (which is more than 20% before the discount). I received my credit card statement for this month and have found a charge of $23 instead of the $15 I had written down. This place has a dishonest worker. I will bring my business somewhere else where my receipt will NOT be changed! I can eat meat on a crisp baguette somewhere else.

The food was very good, with highlights including the toffee creme brulee and my croquet cilantro ham sandwich. The foie gras appetizer was creamy and rich. A nice meal was pretty much spoiled by the service. The waiter was nice and all, and I do understand that French food is not fast food, but I was pushed beyond my limits of patience as I waited for my creme brulee and the check.

Apparently the waiter had forgotten and when I flagged down another waiter he went right away and prepared it. I had to flag our waiter down again to ask for the check and it just took forever to get it, and then another forever to sign the credit card bill. I only had 20 dollar bills on me, and I couldn't just leave cash on the table and leave without leaving a big tip, which I just couldn't bear to do given the service. I felt trapped like a revolutionary in the Bastille. That was the little piece of Paris i experienced that day.

Wonderful and fairly priced. I got Stacy's favorite and it was to die for! Roast beef, caramelized onions, brie and a garlic aioli; what else could you ask for in a sandwich? The baguette was also very toasty and tasty! My only complaint is the size and price of wine, $7 for a small glass that goes down way to fast.

Stopped in today and had one of their daily specials. I believe it was a croque monsieur with mustard. It came with a spring mixed salad. The sandwich was cut up into fourths which I appreciated because it made eating so much nicer.  The flavor was out of this world! It had just enough ham and warm gruyere cheese and the bread was perfectly crunchy. I may have liked a tad more mustard as part of the sandwich didn't have much. The salad was nicely dressed.  I also tried a flavorful and carbonated, French berry lemonade from their case.

I can't wait to go back and try another of Chef William's wonderful creations. Plus, I like being called "Mademoiselle" in a wonderful accent.

Probably our favorite dining experience yet in Sac!  (We've only been here less than a year).  The cafe is small but nice on the inside.  While we've never been to France the inside certainly could have passed for a Parisian diner in my book.  We were greeted at the door with a friendly Bonjour and while we had to wait a few minutes for our table, it wasn't bad because we were able to look over the menu and place our order while we waited.

We started with the Fois Gras appetizer, which we ordered simply because neither of us had ever had it before.  I don't have anything to compare it with so I can't say whether the Fois Gras was particularly good or bad but it certainly had a pleasant and unique flavor.  It was a nice culinary experience but I'm not sure I'll order it again since it was too difficult for me to keep my mind off of what it was made from.

For our main course my wife had the Stacy's choice sandwich and I had the smoked salmon and brie.  The bread used for both sandwiches was delicious.  Crispy, buttery, and well seasoned.  The sandwiches were simple but flavorful.  I was surprised that my salmon came only very lightly smoked (it was essentially raw throughout most of the middle) but the fish was very fresh and delicious.  I was surprised at how much meat the sandwiches contained after our experience at La Bonne last week.

It turned out that my wife liked my sandwich a little better than the one she ordered and I preferred hers.  My sandwich was heavy on the dill, which I don't necessarily dislike but I'm not a huge fan of.  I thought the Stacy's choice sandwich was amazing, and quite possibly the best sandwich I have ever eaten!  In general the sandwiches are very rich (if you can describe a sandwich that way) and while the flavors are truly delicious too much of either sandwich could have been overpowering for me.  It worked out well that we were able to share.

The salads were nothing special but it was nice that it was included in our meal and it provided something lighter to give you a break from the heavy flavors of the sandwich.  We split a chocolate creme brule for dessert and it was absolutely amazing!  Incredibly delicious.  It was a special and isn't always available but if it is I highly recommend it.

The service at the cafe was a bit slow at times, but they were very busy while we were there.  And they were all exceptionally friendly, which made up for it in my book.  But it might not be the best place to stop by if you're in a hurry.

Overall, the atmosphere was top notch, the chef and servers were all extremely personable, and our sandwiches were fabulous, as was our dessert.  The slightly slow service isn't enough to knock a star off.

We will definitely be coming back here again.

Is it wrong to say that a little part of me was sadden, frustrated and angry when Cafe Rolle was featured on Diner's, Drive-Ins, and Dives? While I am ecstatic that they are getting the recognition that they surely deserved...I am saddened that I now how to wait in line to get the yummy delicious food that should righteously belong in my stomach.  Ahhh... I've been to France and beyond...and the food is just basically as good as it gets: simple, country-style bistro French food....yummy!

For the price you pay,  overall the food, was delightful, light tasting and good-valued. We enjoyed the sandwiches a lot. The Brie was sharp, chicken tender, and bread was good. We also tried the shrimp with lentil. While tasty, there was way too much lentil. The foi gras was a little too fatty and chunky for my liking. I prefer a creamy and smooth texture, whereas their version is very chunk to the point that you can see the fatty chunks. Finally we tried the creme brulee. It was awful. The waiter said it was a classic creme brulee with vanilla. It tasted like cold egg yolks. The sugar top wasn't crispy, the custard lacked any taste. We think they didn't put in any sugar or vanilla at all.

I was tempted to give the place 1 star because of the desert. But the it was offset by the fact that the service was friendly, and the chicken sandwich was good.

Me thinks I just ate the best sandwich I ever had in my whole entire life. Today's special was salmon on a toasted french roll with wasabi aoli mixed greens and some wonderful French cheese that started with a G. Everything about this gem of a sandwich was perfect. Perfect toasted bread, aoli with a hint of wasabi, salmon done just right. The lunch was so perfect I think I fell in love with my wife and lunch partner all over again.
I can't wait to go back!!!

Cafe Rolle is so good!!!  I didn't have high expectations, but I've eaten here several times since my first visit and it is consistently good.  I tend to order the same types of things every time:  I start with the chicken pate and then have warm sandwich, usually the ham and brie or the roast beef and brie.  Must add carmelized onions!!

This place is just so charming and on nights when I don't feel like cooking, it really hits the spot.  The service can be slow, but it's the kind of place where they ask you how you are doing and they really want to know!  After my first couple of visits, they recognized me and are always so nice.  They even let me take home my Creme Brulee with their ramekin, just asked me to return it on my next visit.

I am TOTALLY annoyed that people who waste their time watching the Food Network have now infiltrated one of my favorite places.  To me, if you are not with it enough to know the cool places in your own city, don't bother trying them!!  Go to Applebees where you belong!!

Food - I mean how can you go wrong with pate, roast beef sandwich and creme brulee that even a 10 year old likes enough to gobble up!

Service - How cute is it to enter and try to speak french with the waiter and chef? They are so nice

The location, parking is available, but the place is tiny, so hope that you come when it is free. But worth any wait! I am sure they will be opening up a larger place if they are interested in that venture.

If you enjoy delicately delicious foi gras, light and fluffy quiche, smoked salmon, artfully tasty salads, a great glass of Rose(the list goes on and on)...this is the place for you. I hear the sandwiches are topnotch too, and ALL ingredients are of the highest quality, easily discernible by both the palate and the eye. YUM!

I had a perfectly poached salmon with exquisite potatoes au gratin. I can't say enough about the food. Artful. Perfect.

Exceptionally clean, inviting, open style dining room with a perfect combination of natural and artificial light flowing through the room, and framed French posters adorning the walls. French music playing in the background. And stellar service...no empty glasses, no waiting, waiting, waiting. Timing is so important and they have it down to an art.

We can not wait to head back. We enjoyed every aspect of the meal, from the setting, presentation, TASTE, and the service. Sacramento is so fortunate to have an authentic French Cafe in its midst.

When a restaurant fills you with a Joie de vivre
(A feeling of healthy enjoyment of life; exuberance, high spirits), you must tell everyone you know (or in this case, dont know) about it, and go back OFTEN!!!

Side note: My husband had a bite of my chocolate raspberry mousse, he actually chuckled aloud...he said it was "Joie de vivre", only he said it in English.

I came here with a friend we were greeted by a really nice waiter... WITH A FRENCH ACCENT! How adorable! We chose to sit outside which might've been a mistake; the the establishment next door was booming black eyed peas, all while screaming counts to their clients. Now to the main thing which is food! We ordered the roast beef sandwich and the shrimp sandwich. I don't remember the actual names of the sandwiches but they were still good. The hot sandwiches comes with a spring mix salad with a mustard dressing. I'm not a fan..well...I pretty much hate mustard and the musturd dressing seems to be the only dressing for salads. I told the waiter and he was nice enough to get me a new salad and some olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The shrimp sandwich! The baguette was crunchy and soft...it was perfect! The shrimp was well seasoned, hot, and perfectly cooked. The sauce that went along with it was delicious, perfect match.

The roast beef sandwich had good flavour but the beef itself was a little overcooked. The sandwich came with its own sauce and caramelized onions...yuuuumm.

OH! Its not on the menu but the waiter offered sodas since we couldn't drink wine. They have lime, lemon, berry, and other flavours and it was really good.

my friend and I shared a bottle, though it isn't huge, it was hard for me to finish drinking it all. We ordered the pomegranate drink which had the perfect amount of sweetness to it and was very rich in flavour. It was a nice compliment to our meals

I would definitely recommend this place to everyone and I'm sure I will be back.

OK, yeah you have to wait for a table at lunch time and they're kinda slow at getting the tables set up.  But people wait patiently with no complaint because they know what they're in for.

I have only been there twice but each time was memorable and the food was beyond words fantastic.  Last time I had the warm chicken sandwich with gruyere cheese and the taste stopped the conversation and changed it to how amazing the sandwich was and why.  I guess it doesn't matter why but they do a lot with textures as well as taste.  The creme broulet was also amazing and the coffee very nice.  No hesitation recommending this place!

I remember coming here before and it wasn't set up like a restaurant.. It was  a deli.

I've read reviews on yelp about people having words on the "pretentious" patrons of Selland's Market across the street and as we were walking up, I was telling Nick about it. We sat outside and wouldn't you know-- the couple at the next table were going on about the snobs across the street. I wonder if Selland's yelpers are just as judgemental.

We had great service and our food was fantastic along with a couple glasses of wine. I like that they brought a small carafe of water for each of us.

Everything we had, we loved. The colossal shrimp on lentil salad, cold chicken pate sandwich, and Stacy's Favorite (a sandwich that came with a salad). Loved it all.

Parking is very limited, by the way. At least in their lot. But, there's plenty on the street.

Rolle de café est une tranche de France dans Sacramento. Les plats sont délicieux et authentiques. Tout est très bon!

Yes! Indeed, Cafe Rolle is a slice of Lyon, France in East Sacramento. More like a slice of quiche and baguette, specifically. :)

I've dined on Chef William's culinary creations on many occasion and here are the following favorite menu selections:

- Hot Sandwich: Stacey's Favorite: How can you not love melted brie, grilled onions, and roast beef sandwiched between a warm, crusty baguette? It's so delicious and one of my favorites.

- Cold Sandwich or Appetizer: Anything with house-made smoked salmon or gravalax. Difference between the smoked salmon and gravalax is that the latter has fresh herbs and a bit of sugar added in the curing process. Both have the same texture and preparation.

- Quiche: Chef William makes them occasionally and they are FRESH. Crust is not too thick and of course, very buttery.

- Foie Gras/Pate: LOVE IT! Enjoy it while you can before 2014. (Refer to SB 1520 signed by our Governor in 2004). Chef Rolle prepares a wonderful Lyonnaise preparation of pate and foie gras. Yes, it's fatted goose liver - and it's decedent, delicious, and divine.

- Dessert: Creme Brulee and Chocolate Mousse. Both are delicious, but my favorite is the mousse. You can't go wrong with either selection.

The only item I found to be mediocre was the shrimp entree with lentils. I think I was expecting something different. Other then that . . . the sandwiches and appetizers are amazing.

Service:  the only people staffing the bistro is Chef William Rolle and another French gentleman.  Chef William is usually busy in the kitchen, singing /humming n French, but the regular server is delightful and charming.  Service is casual and friendly.

I highly recommend this locally, owned East Sacramento cafe.  If you're an avid Francophile, and want to bring a bit of France into your own household, Chef William also offers cooking classes at the Cafe Rolle for any French foodie.

Cafe Rolle serves mostly simple french sandwiches and deli staples.  I've never been to france, but i suspect i would find a place like this in a small french conutry side village somewhere.  First of all, this place is soooo small!  I actually saw them on Triple D on the food network, and it actually looked much bigger on tv.  I guess the camera adds square footage as well as 10 pounds!  They have a few tables inside and a few two seaters outside, but outside seating is ehh, because you are facing their tiny parking lot.  Kind of takes away from the ambience when you're seating 3 feet away from the grill of an old suburban.   The menu is again simple.  THey have several different salads and sandwiches which are listed, but when you actually look at the ingredients, its basically the same thing with like one thing either added on or left out!  I  had ordered one of their ham and cheese sandwhiches, it was  pretty good, but I tought the bread was a bit too tough for my taste.  We also ordered this prawn with cream frishe appetizer, it was really fantastic.   Service was fine.  We saw the owner cooking in the kitchen.  it was funny, a family with a small kid, asked to take a photo with him.  He was chill and gladly took a photo with them.  We also spoted a tv reporter eating there as well.  Enjoyable meal, that was. I want to go back  try their other offerings.

Everything is fresh and delicious!  I love the warm poached salmon sandwich on baguette. Mmmmm!! The coffee is delightful and the raspberry creme brûlée is amazing!  Wish they would expand their hours. Long time fav of mine, but recent popularity from a news article has made the very small,  once-intimate, quaint cafe always crowded, so I don't go as often. Good for the owner though!!!

I had the warm brie and smoked salmon sandwich a while back when I lived in Sacramento and it still haunts me till this day. It was soo delicious. Plus the chocolate creme brulee is divine! I love the intimacy and authenticity of this place. The chef sings while he cooks too. I've never been to France, but I feel like I got a little taste of it.

I plan on going back for dinner! Some day :)

If I had the time to linger, I'd dine in... but on a few occasions now I've been able to order takeaway. Merci beaucoup to Chef William!

My favorites -- for my Bastille Day dinner soiree or for myself:

- foie gras served with baguette
same recipe as the one his father uses in Lyon; generous portion is decadent and flavorful. I don't need to eat much to fill satisfied, esp with a slice or two of crusty French bread

- Poulet (chicken breast) a la Provencale (seasoned with herbes de Provence and fresh basil)

- quiche
buttery, flaky crust and savory filling. Pair with delicate, spring greens.

- apple tart

FYI -- The sous chef is the busier of the two man operation, but he's slightly more friendly.

Saw this on Diners, Driveins, and Dives and I knew I had to come in here. The sandwiches just looked too good to be true.
I had the Croque Chicken Monsieur. OMG OMG OMG. Chicken and Brie on a beautiful piece of baguette. Delicious!
And, the owner is a piece of work. He is hysterical and awesome and the nicest guy on the planet.
This is a great place in East Sac.

Sooooo good. In fact, I'll use the extent of my French: tre good. :P

I'm offended that I go and spend $5 on fast food when I could have been ordering fantastic sandwiches for $5.50 all these years!

I just went for the first time today - and was immediately taken in by the homemade crusty baguettes, tarragon mayonnaise and fresh greens, all used in making my chicken breast sandwich. Co-workers said the roast beef sandwiches were equally good. The nice thing is adding a slice of brie for just a $1.50.

I will so be going back. A lot. I can't wait. Maybe tomorrow....

I love this place

The owner is warm, friendly, and light hearted. The food is unique, consistent and totally appealing to anyone.

I get a Stacy's Favorite to go every Saturday. The baguette that they use is incredible, as is his garlic/tarragon aioli. The chicken in the croque chicken and prawns over lentils are so flavorful and delicious. Everything on his menu is amazing.

I love me some authentic French food when I'm not in France, and I think Cafe Rolle's probably your best bet when you're craving a little cuisine francaise.

I am usually partial to the salmon dishes, whether it's smoked salmon on a bed of greens with viniagrette, or poached on a baguette with brie.  But, yes, the salmon is the reason that I haven't ventured to other items on the menu as much...

In any event, the food is consistently delicious, and the waiter is tres charmant, even if he comprises the total waitstaff.  If you have time to kill (the slower service merits one star less) and 10 dollars to spend, mangez au Cafe Rolle!

I guess my tastes aren't sophisticated enough to enjoy the food here. I tried the Foie Gras and it was just OK to me. My friend Loved it. So I let her have at it. Then for lunch I had the Brie and Ham sandwich. I love french bread but for me the crusty top was too hard. It actually hurt the roof of my mouth. i would rather have something a little less harsh so I could taste the brie and ham and dill mayo. The bread really took away from the other flavors.
The service was slow but we loved the server. He works the room all on his own, yet he took the time to suggest wines and explain them to us. I personally won't be back, but my sophisticated friend said she loved every minute of it. So what do I know , I'm from Placerville. HA HA
