Cafe Noir has been a favorite among my friends and I for a long, long time.  Back in the day we used to spend lazy, summer Sunday evenings there sipping the perfectly flavored sangria and munching on small bites while recounting the weekend's craziness.

Recently went back on a Saturday night after quite a hiatus and everything was awesome, as expected.  We had a party to attend next door at Naked Lunch, so just stopped in for a quick bite.  There's a decent amount of seating in the back, so luckily we were seated immediately.

The sangria is still one of the best I've had this side of Madrid, a must have!  Moroccan pizza always hits the spot, love it as a shareable appetizer.
Mixed marinated mushrooms are also amazing.
Mini lamb burgers were cooked well but quite salty.  Not sure what they seasoned them with.

    Cons:

    - As others have said, there's no doubt this place is a little overpriced.  But hey, you're definitely paying for the great scene.  LOVE the location and sexy ambiance.  That is the main draw.

    - Only accepts cash and AMEX so keep this in mind and be prepared!

I live near Cafe Noir and often stop in for a drink.  I WILL not be giving this establishment my money any more.  As their neighbor I put up with smoke filled sidewalks, cigarette butts all over and very NOISY late night crowds that I can hear from my apartment.

But today was the last straw.  While unlocking my bicycle from the street sign on the public sidewalk in front my apartment building, next to CAFE NOIR the owner verbally attacked me, threatening to "cut my bike lock" and that "it would be a shame if my bike went missing one night".   I am a respectful biker, mindful of sidewalks, pedestrians and private property.  CAFE NOIR has NO right to threaten me, verbally attack me, nor steal my bicycle.  They should be kind to the neighbors that put up with their late night noise and trash left strewn about the street and sidewalk.

Chill bar/restaurant. Enjoyed the late night ambiance. Contributes to the uniqueness that makes Soho what it is. Was excited to see the place packed on a Sunday night which must mean that it is a happening joint as far as the rest of the week is concerned.

Sangria, Sangria, and Sangria.. If you have not already heard, the Sangria here is definitely a must have. The food options also looked pretty good. I had the Seared Tuna which I enjoyed thoroughly.

They do a decent job with the presentation of the place to reflect their Spanish/Moroccan inspired theme and the service back in the restaurant was also pretty good.

Overall, def makes for a good hang out spot.

Went here for a VERY late night party.
They have a live DJ some nights but all in all, the place was small, and it took a while for the staff to get our orders.
The good thing is that their kitchen is open late, so if u wanna grab a late night drink and food at the same time this is the place to go
There are alot of french, but I feel like that entire block most people are french! All in all, its a good place to end the night at.

Mediocre food that you can get anywhere in SoHo.  Food was generally boring and lacked flavor and the sangria was watery.  Not worth the wait or money.  This place is sliding downhill based on other yelper's responses.

I clearly loved Cafe Noir because I love love love anything reminiscent of a French bistro or cafe.  I really liked the vibe here and am looking forward to coming back during the day to take advantage of the outdoor seating.  Inside the vibe is sexy and fun with friendly bartenders. The music was great for just letting loose, being a little silly and having a good time.  Also to be noted, the DJ was cool and he even let me play his keyboard!

While spending a few days in the SoHo/TriBeCa area, I was looking for something tasty in a laid-back atmosphere.  This place is definitely eclectic and suited my needs.  Not the mind-blowing foodie adventure that I have had at some other venues, but the meal was decent.  I stuck to the tapas to sample a little of everything and found that I would recommend the shrimp in garlic, but nothing else really left an impression.  I feel like it was a touch on the pricey side for what I ordered, but the caipirinhas helped buffer the pain incurred at wallet-opening time.

I do have to say that the service was very attentive and I was not expecting that.  Overall, if I were in the area again, I might go back and try some other options, but there are so many other restaurants that I would go to first that I might not ever make it back.

I didn't think this place was that great. It does have an intimate feel at night, but I think they dim the lights just so you can't see how dirty it is.

Bathrooms were pretty bad. The hand dryer blows so little air that you might as well not even use it. They could definitely use a little updating.

Love the location. Love the feel. This place is fun and always open really late! I end up stumbling in here a lot after nights around SoHo or Tribeca. Always a good time. The bartenders and fun and friendly.

The sangria is very yummy and in the summer when the huge windows are open it has the perfect open air summer night feel to it.

A great late night go to in an area I frequent quite often! Thank you Cafe Noir for always providing that one more glass of alcohol (when many of the times it may not even be needed).

Highly Overpriced but thats what you can expect from SoHo. The food was mediocre at best. 3 of us ordered the Croque Monsoir and it was 90% bread with no creme fraisce to be found. The Bloody Marys were so spicy they were nearly impossible to drink.

Cute space but I wont be going back anytime soon.

After all this time - CAFÉ NOIR was shut down
    Wow!
    Now what???

Now I can't imagine that hot French man taking advantage of Diane Lane (Unfaithful)

Where will I go for brunch at 11am, and the next thing I know it's 11pm - yup, never left the bar

Or starting conversations with - it's cash only, I need to get cash.

Where will I knock on the bathroom door to find the guy I'm (whatever) dating with another woman - which resulted in me yelling at him, running out, bartender running after me (yea, he kinda fancied me also and was seeing if I was ok), and then the guy I'm (whatever) dating running after him - all witnessed by the cute guys at 60 Thompson...

Where will I accidentally convince the cops that we shouldn't be arrested - I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT! lol

Where will I end up with the guy that I like, best friend...

Where will I go after meeting a cute Englishman on the Super Shuttle - when the driver said, "sir, what's your address" and he said "Um, I'm getting off at her stop"

Where else where I be in mommy mode and witness my friend no long standing - she's in flats but lost her balance anyway

Where else will I get unconditional love for a man with a gold grille?

Oh...  and then there's the peanut butter - where else am I going to get covered in peanut butter?

Or blow kissing across the room to the DJ

Or run into the Prince of (hm, what was he the Prince of again)...

Where am I going to witness my friends think a curtain is a wall, lean on it, and go crashing down

Where are we going to dance, even though there isn't a dance floor?  I think we danced with the chairs once?

Oh and then there's the hot guy we called Café Noir

I guess the only good thing is that I won't have to use their DISGUSTING bathroom anymore -

But I will miss our sweet little late night bar where all the pretty people ended up...

Just a little Thursday humor and tears...

Stopped in for lunch and it was ok.  The service is very friendly, but the prices were a little high for the quality.
I had the tuna tartare, and it was good, but nothing to brag about.  I also had the shrimp cigars, which were recommended to me by the waiter, and they were a little greasy and salty tasting.
I took the avacado hummus to-go and ate it for dinner....I should have just ordered that!  It was fabulous!!!
Each tapas menu item is $10+ and for ok food and very small portions - I probably won't be back.

They now American Express along with cash.

I went in here with a friend and the place smelled a mix between incense and soap.  It wasn't bad.

Then we sat down and the waitress appeared to take our drink orders.  The place wasn't even close to full.  I ordered mediocre paella, my buddy had a coffee.  We felt a little pressured, as if this order wasn't legit.

My paella wasn't good, the coffee was "terrible", and the service was mediocre.  At payout, I went to use their ATM since they are cash only and the ATM said "TAMPER ERROR".  When I told the waitress, I got a cold look.  Was she crazy enough to think I tampered with it?  She was probably just having a bad day.  And her personality is probably usually mediocre too.

Anyway, it was pricey enough for what we got, and I ended up forgetting my hat there (I believe).  When I called them later that night, they hadn't seen it.  My friend says the waitress is probably wearing it now, but given that Halloween is around the corner there's plenty of motivation for stealing a beret.

I never go out of my way to come here, but when I am in SoHo and remember I can get totally mediocre classic bistro fare, slightly overpriced wine and a bit of surly french service, I am happy.  Can always get a seat, everything is exactly as I expect it to be and I do actually really dig some of the salads.

Going to up this to 4 stars because there have been many late nights where I've wanted 'just one more drink' and somehow end up in the back of Cafe Noir making out with an internet date & being appreciative that it's really dark.  So, thanks for that.

In Soho where you have only 2 dine in options-good and expensive vs terrible and cheap.  Cafe Noir is that almost a golden middle. Dont get excited though- its doesnt worth a planned trip but if you are in Soho and exhausted from carrying your heavy bags filled with Chanel and Vuittons this is a decent spot to stop for a snack.

Staff is super accomodating. Me and my friends(6 of us-pretty large group for friday) were the nightmare of every server and a host. One of us was cold and didnt like her seat, they gave us another ; same young lady-had multiple food allergies-no problem, waitress was very helpful; same person-wasnt sure about her wine-they gave a sip of it before we bought it, same person- invited a guest who showed up an hour late-no problem w them; same person-wanted a water,lemons,bread,oil,refills-no problem. P.S. if I was her server -her food will have some extra ingredient called arsenic which usually helps  people who have a hard time making decisions.

Food is decent-yes, I didnt fall in love with it but it was fresh-good enough. Molten cake was a def orgasmic thou, i was making love to it alone. If you want a dessert, lady, order ur own. hands off my cake.

Again nothing extraordinary but after wandering for 40 minutes around Soho for a place to eat and chill without breaking a bank this is as good as it gets

I'm pretty sure I dined next to the rapper Rick Ross last night. That sighting more or less encapsulates my experience at Café Noir: I am not cool enough to kick it here on a regular basis, but I'll keep going until I convince myself otherwise. Expect to see a lot of dreads, bra-less/beautiful ladies (not that those go hand-in-hand always), and whatever you imagine the graduated version of Bob Marley paraphernalia is.

Not a spot to run to for its food although the food definitely didn't disappoint. Loved the seafood paella and enjoyed the fried brie (although not as delicious as the waitress described), but my friend didn't seem to enjoy her veggie burger. Thanks to Café Noir for having vegetarian and vegan options-the herbivores in my life have made dining out slightly difficult recently.

And, considering how busy it was, Café Noir really surprised me on service. Throughout the evening, the wait staff ensured our water glasses were full and that they were always accessible.

This is a tapas restaurant with a "club" alter ego. We went very late on a Saturday night (maybe 12:30-1) and had some tapas and sangria. The tapas were ok, nothing extraordinary. I have to add that this was the BEST sangria I have ever had in my entire life!! Loved it so much, I wish I could order some online! lol

I can definitely see myself going back there every single time I go back to NY. The Sangria is THAT good!

I had high hopes for Cafe Noir, for the following personal reasons:

The European ambience is sexy and inviting. The bartenders are friendly, and the waiters are gracious and attentive.  The lighting is so perfectly sparse and romantic, I'd go so far as to surmise that Seal himself was asked what type of lighting he used the first time he tried to get Heidi Klum in bed with him.  Cause you KNOW "Kissed By a Rose" wasn't getting him THAT far.

So, if the food was really good, this would make tops for a go to spot on almost any occasion.  Alas, eating here gave me the same feeling I get on Canal street when they lure me into one of those cool, suspicious vans.  Blindly following whispers of Prada and Gucci, I'm presented with  a backseat full of plastic-coated handbags peppered with haphazardly placed C's. "For you, my friend...only $50!".

The Moroccan pizza SOUNDED great - Mediterrenean veggie and goat cheese - but it TASTED like a microwaveable kashi pizza.  Maybe I ordered the wrong entree, but I've had goat cheese pizza before, and if this WAS goat cheese, it was goat cheese's much less flavorful evil twin. The creme brulee was burnt and was definitely furnished underneath with some vanilla flavored jell-o pudding.  And the beef burger wasn't terrible, but not special at all.

I'm giving you three stars, Cafe Noir, for the same reason Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize.  It's all about POSSIBILITY, people!  Even McLovin' could get laid after taking a girl here, if the food was a little better.

I'm usually all for tapas places because those are my favorite! However, every time I come here I want to really like this place but I always walk away feeling just a little meh. It has it's appeal for sure. There are large open windows that make the bar area an open air area without having to sit outside. If you get seated inside the ceilings have a cool dome-ish tiled decor. The ambiance is very laid back but also romantic at the same time without being so American or... the typical NYC bar/lounge/ restaurant for NY'ers to hit up after a long day at work.

This place is kind of like teaching a child to ride without training wheels. You sense the kid has almost got a hang of it and everything's looking great (i.e. ambiance is good, service is nice)... so you let go and go with your instincts (like ordering something and expecting that everything will turn out the way you want it to) and bam! bike hits the ground and the kid is crying (the food isn't bad but isn't what you wanted the outcome to be). I just felt underwhelmed- you expect something exciting and it gives you the opposite effect. I really want to like this place so I'll be back again but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised! I'm willing to give this place another try because it has the potential to be a neighborhood gem.

    FYI: AMEX only or CASH.

We've been to cafe noir twice. The first time was on a whim as we wanted to try a new 'find' but the 2nd time was to fulfill the craving we had for great tapas!!

My husband and I are committed to working our way through the menu. So far we've tried and LOVED:

The honey fried Brie with fried grapes--straight foodie heaven
    The Lamb meatballs--savory awesomeness
    The hummus--delicious!
The lentil stew with chorizo--yum and hearty
    The sausage skewers--really good
The morocan pizza--goes really well with

    The fckn amazing mojito!!

We go during the day when service is primo and the vibe is mellow.

But believe it or not, as I save the best for last, the table garlic oil w red pepper flakes that is served with bread upon seating, is INSANELY delicious! Keep it on the table during your meal and have multiple culinary orgasms!!

Cafe Noir is right by the James Hotel, one of my favorite places to stay in SoHo.  Despite that, I never stopped in to eat until we got caught up in a New Year's Eve food blackout, and couldn't find a spot at the bar at Balthazar.  As a last desperate attempt to fill our stomachs before drinking the night away, we stopped in and were greeted by a lovely French-speaking gentleman who showed us to a corner table in the back.

The food was exactly what I expected (and wanted)--moderately priced and yummy, if nothing spectacular.  They had a wise selection of wines by the glass.  Highlights from the food were the baguette with olive oil (the oil had what appeared to be tapenade and chili flakes that made it extra tasty), the white anchovy / piquillo pepper starter, and the Paella Valenciana.  Of course, it's not real Paella!  But the rice still tasted warm and smoky and even got a little crunchy around the edges.  My steak frites au poivre was average, but the temperature was right, and the meat was tender.

The food is decent, and the ambiance is warm and festive.  There was a live guitarist when we were there, and the staff were fun and talkative.

dark, creepy little place where one of my good friends likes to get drunk on strong vodka sodas and creep around before "hitting it hard" as he likes to say.

The atmosphere here seems to be great after dark. Came here not for the food but to carry forward the night to more drinks.

If you're eating here late at night or plan to linger for hours, I'd highly recommend getting a table away from the front. I felt pretty bad for the folks at the table by the door.  With the small space and the amount of people attempting to dance in it while inebriated you're going to get jostled around.

While it was difficult to find some space, unlike rush hour subway cars most of the patrons here seem very friendly and accommodating.  Getting to the bar can be a little bit of an issue due to logistics, but the bartenders are quick on their feet and quick with their pour.

The only thing everyone noticed is there seemed to be a very high concentration of people at extremes here (At least the night I went).  It was hard to find the average.  Super short or super tall, super skinny or super wide and this is with both sexes.

Overall it made for a good spot to wrap up the end of the night.

Went here last week after work on a sweltering hot NYC evening.   My dining companion and I enjoyed cool rum punch and mojitos while sitting near the wide open windows.  Even though the weather was hot, this place had the perfect festive atmosphere to enjoy the summer weather and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Lots of couples on dates here.  The food was very good and portions were larger than expected, except for my salad which was not "jumbo" but still a good size and delicious.  Our waitress was a lovely, welcoming and helpful.
Only complaint (minus one star) is the lack of happy hour specials.  I find it tough to pay $13 for a cocktail at 6 pm.

stopped in saturday night for a quick cocktail and a bite to eat before a 9pm dinner reservation at another joint down the street. ordered up a gin and tonic and split the Plato Mixto de Tapas (mixed tapas tasting platter with two of my buds. Fairly certain this dish included Calamars à la parill (grilled calamari, lemon juice, olive oil), marinated olives,
Morrocan tabouleh, humus, chorizo.  awesome bread with a red pepper olive oil dipping plate.  almost ruined my dinner because i couldn't stop eating this amazingly fresh dish.

music was great.  mostly reggae (not sure if this is the norm).  Happy to hear one of my favs,  Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves."

great crowd at the bar.  plan on speaking loudly to make yourself heard over the music and chatter.  if you need to take a call on your phone, you will need to take it outside.

only complaint may be the size of the drinks.  gin and tonic glass was tiny and wasn't a great pour. on the upside, our waitress was positively, drop dead gorgeous in every way.  i'd go back in a heartbeat.

Did you know that this where was the infamous sex scene from Unfaithful occurred, with Diane Lane and frenchie guy? Yes, friends, I went to the exact site but was disappointed to see two tiny separate bathrooms. Nothing like the big room with lots of do-it space that was in the movie.

Anyway, we came here for a night-cap- it was warm, but the windows were open and there was nice ambient music in the background. I like the vibe, it was ethnic without being ethnic. Maybe it was the crowd but there was definitely an element of 'sexy' in the atmosphere.

A thunderstorm came out of nowhere and they had to close the windows. It became too humid, and my drink wasn't that good either.
    My Italian date agreed.

We hailed a cab in the humid rain and said 'ciao' to the restaurant. It was a good send-off.

Lamb meatballs and Morroccan pizza make my stomach happy. Couple that with wine and a waitstaff that's willing to bring me and my friend a plate of olives gratis and I'd be in heaven ... if it wasn't for the roaches.

Now, if you live in New York city you have roaches. If you've dined out in NYC you've eaten above, next to and below roaches. You're probably sitting next to one right now. The thing is they usually have the good manners to keep themselves out of sight.

The food was good. The staff lively and fun but sadly the wine fell a little short. I qualify that by saying I had just tasted the best Pino Noir I've ever had the night before so maybe I'm a little biased. That's really the reason for the three stars. That and the dinginess of the joint. Yeah, you're located by the tunnel, but that doesn't mean you need to decorate the place in soot.

We'd passed this place coming back from Blue Ribbon in the wee hours of the night and noticed a bustling drinking crowd. In fact it was recommended to me by a friend as the late night place to go but I had already had the Blue Ribbon on my radar. So I met him for lunch the next day. What a completely different scene. Casual bistro with some great, affordable small plates and entrees.

    - Mixed Grilled chicken breast, chorizo, merguez, lamb chops,
    with french fries
-Morrocan Pizza, spicy thin bread with onions, goat cheese, tomato and olives
    -Tortilla Espagnol

A great spread of food that got the girls next to us wondering what we ordered. For three of us it was about $70 and left us all feeling nice and satisfied.

A few nights later we needed a late night meal again and since this was so close we came back. Had the burger and Couscous Royal; lamb, chicken, merguez, vegetables, semolina. The vibe at 2 am is more of a bar and we were only one of the few people eating.

The place has multiple rooms, with multiple moods, and the service is fairly relaxed. Great hours, satisfying food , and overall a pretty good value,

Café Noir brunch on a Sunday after a 4 week run/binge is just what the doctor ordered.  Conveniently tucked into a nice corner of the South Village across the street from the James is a French/Morocco-Med ™ flare of some sorts only thing missing is hookah service.  So I went here for brunch and ended up having dinner because the vibe/drinks/convo/sights and sounds were right.  The drink prices were moderate, the bar menu fits the bill, the bar staff is decently attentive and the menu is ok, however no show stopper.  I really dig the vibe here I advise go on Sunday and make it a fun day if you really dig good music such as soul/deep funk classic and "real" house music this is a good selection.  So at the end of the day I opted for the salmon burger it was decent.  I'll be back!

    Sangria. Mojitos. Margaritas.

    BY THE PITCHER.

I don't eat the food here. The service is sub-par. But the atmosphere is amazing in the summer...perfect for chillen with some friends at a cute low-key spot. Start, end or spend your night here for a great time.

I had a great night with my friend at Cafe Noir last night!

It might be too loud for an intimate romantic night, but perfect for two girlfriends to catch up, eat delicious tapas, enjoy the music and a great ambiance!

The tapas are the best ones I've had - make sure to try the Brie, Gambas and Seafood paella tapas! All are super fresh and bursting with flavor! And let me tell you, a pitcher of Summer Noir (raspberry vodka, lemon, mint, sugar, splash of cranberry juice) had general amount of vodka and the fruits/herbs were so fresh, it's like they picked it from the backyard garden!

Our waiter was incredibly attentive (but not annoying), very friendly and all his food suggestions were perfect!

    I'm coming back soon!

Why is the staff (not including the nice and very professional Chilean guy) at Cafe Noir so awkwardly absent-minded?
This feature is so annoying that almost makes me want to never lay my ass on those leopard print banquettes again...

Cafe Noir is a quaint little French-style bistro, serving Moroccan, Spanish tapas, and southern French-inspired cuisine. As you walk in the door, you may be struck with a sense of deja vu--that's because the infamous bathroom scene from Unfaithful was filmed at Cafe Noir (not really in the bathroom, though). It's dark, tiny, and overcrowded, but the music is fun, as is the decor. It's a great place for dinner, especially in the summer when the front is open to the sidewalk and there's a bit more space.

Try the Summer Noir...it tastes like childhood.

Have a few of them and you'll understand what I mean.

    Tapas anyone?

We stumbled on this restaurant on our way to a concert at the Canal Room.  It was bustling with people, drinks were flowing and the vibe seemed relaxed but fun.  We decided to go with the pitcher of Sangria and were really excited to get down and enjoy the sweet fruity wine, but for 29.00 I was expecting a bigger Pitcher.  This little Pitcher only allowed for a glass and a half a person and we were a party of four.  It was good, I can't deny but for 30 bucks I think it should have at least giving us two full glasses a piece.

Moving on to the food, we shared this tapas sampler, for 23.00 it is a true bargain and a great variety of tapas from hot to cold.  I remember we had salmon, cheese, olives, guacamole, some deep fried goodness, octopus, etc.  It was well worth it and enough for two people to share or four as an appetizer.  My friend had the lamb meatballs which she said was tasty and the other friend had the burger, which he enjoyed too.

They do serve you bread with an chili-oil dipping sauce which had a bit of heat but not too much.  We also got more drinks, I had the 9.00 Mojito which was good but more on the strong side.

It is a cash only or you can pay by AMEX and the waitress was a bit slow at times.

I won't be back but only because I have to try the million other places in this city.

This place SPEEEEAKS to my inner bohemian...

I doubt that this place loses much of its appeal during colder months, but this place really sparkles in the summer. Part bistro, part tapas bar, the Mediterranean vibes this place exudes are only heightened when afforded the chance to sit in its open air seating section. I just can't describe to you how unbelievably sexy I feel drinking my mojito, listening to world music and mingling among the most eccentric individuals Soho has to offer.

Now if the beaded curtains weren't enough to put me in a cool mood, the express lunch prices are especially inviting. The Mediterranean Platter and the Steak Sandwich are faves of mine (oh! they have upgraded the typical olive oil dip in a way where folks come JUST to dip bread in it). Priced at $9.50, I can afford to get lost in my thoughts at this gem a couple of times a month.

We stumbled in here late night on a Thursday for some food and drink.. I got wine, I tasted my friends' drinks and they were a little too sweet for me.. Service was great and the food was exactly what we were craving at the time.. We got the moulles frites and a friend got tuna tartare.. They were both yummy.  Great night.
