    Sandwich: Tasty
    Service: Not so much

Felt like I was inconveniencing the girl behind the counter. You're not closed yet, so you could look up from sweeping and say hi to take my order. The two working didn't seem to care that there were paying, hungry customers in the place. I could go on about how I wasn't offered, but had to ask after the fact, about the side that comes with the sandwich and then after a long wait, went inside to find my sandwich sitting on the counter and something about how she couldn't bring it outside... you could have told me that when I ordered, except you were too busy not paying attention to me to think of this.

Tip: Customers have money. Give us a few seconds of your attention.
    Tip: You ain't gettin' one.

My husband and I used to love Cafe Newsstand.  We loved sitting around, reading the paper, drinking coffee, enjoying the square.

But on our last visit (this past weekend), it seems like the place was in disarray.  Maybe it's new ownership, I don't know.  Parts of the menu were covered up, seating wasn't really set up, coffee was served in paper cups instead of mugs... From now on, we'll be going to Downtown Bakery & Creamery for breakfast and coffee breaks.

Well, it was a place to get a cup of coffee, and be treated with disdain and apathy.  The food made me sick a couple of times, and i was over charged.  But some how I will miss this rebel of service and bad food. Today I saw that the windows were papered and was told by reliable sources that a pizza place was going in.
How awesome is that ?  The service will probably be good and the food edible.  Oh, what is an epicurean masochist to do.  I guess if I want to be treated rudely and served bad food I'll just have to stay home.

Wow... This place is horrible. We just wanted something quick to drink while wandering the streets so we popped in here. Wish we hadn't! First we had to wait in line forever, the GIRL is so rude and when we ordered a glass of chardonnay and she stared at us and she said what's that?? Hello?! You don't know what wine is in Sonoma county?! And then she didn't know where the wine glasses were...and then she starred at us some more till we asked her to POUR the wine in the glass. It's also dirty - do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to stop!

I've never eaten here, but I have ordered their Espresso.
It's not great. I've been in maybe 3 times over the last few years (I'm not sure why) and I feel like I'm inconveniencing the employees everytime I order my drink and pay them money. The girl that everyone is talking about is very rude. If there is something on the television that the employees are into - forget it. You will barely be addressed. The smell isn't great, either.
Last time was in fact the last time.

There is one young gal who works here who is absolutely RUDE! This makes going to this establishment intolerable.
I have also experienced the sweeping, cleaning etc, before the place closes while ignoring the customer. Also the coffee tastes like dish soap, and the food is marginal, or just not fresh.

Don't waste your money here! I'm a local and this place used to be ok, but since it changed owners the service has gone down hill! The girls that work here know nothing about customer service, and are completely rude all the time. They don't smile and seem totally put off anytime you ask them for something. There were 3 of them working and it took them 10 minutes to even ask us what we wanted to order when we were standing at the counter with no other customers in the cafe. The place is drab and has an unappealing environment. Why even call yourself "Newstand Cafe" if you don't sell magazines anymore.

A simple, no real frills cafe for grabbing a quick bite before walking about town.  We popped in right after arriving in town, famished and not wanting to waste any time with a long lunch.  We both ordered the chicken caesar salads.  Got the job done.  Was it jump up & down fantastic?  Nah.  Was it good?  Absolutely.  And like I said, got the job done.

If you want to continue being leisurely, you can grab some magazines or newspapers in their little newsstand alcove.  And let's be honest people, don't we all just love being leisurely!...

Comfy little place, service was lacking.  I walked up to the counter and the people at the counter were talking to each other, even though I was standing there.  I waited a bit and they finally nodded at me, no hello or hi or how are you or nice shirt or wink, but just a nod.  I ordered, and another nod, the guy turned to his friend and talked some more while I waited.  It wasn't a memorable mocha, and I think I remembered more about their conversation than anything else.

For some odd reason there's a huge cigar magazine section there... and some dudes smoking cigars outside.

The paninis are pretty good here. Mostly this is good for coffee. Iced, non fat mocha, kind of sweet but the coffee tastes good and it's 3.50.
They have other drinks, alcohol and sandwiches too. Theres tables inside and outside to hang out and eat. Right off the square, parking all over and of course all the magazines you could want. Ya better buy one though because they don't like it when you stand around and flip through all of them..

I started going into Cafe Newsstand while on the hunt for copies of The Economist.  I chose this place because it has a wide variety of magazines - arguably the most diverse selection of magazines in Healdsburg.  Disappointingly, their copies are never current.  And I mean never.  They're usually one to two weeks behind, which is ridiculous considering that The Economist covers current events.  Luckily, I was given a gift subscription and haven't been back since.

As for their drinks, they're okay.  The customer service is definitely lacking.  The atmosphere is . . . lacking also.  I didn't find the chairs to be very comfortable or inviting.  This is definitely not the kind of cafe where you order an espresso drink, sit down, enjoy your drink, and read a nice article.  (If you're looking for that place, head to the Flying Goat.)

One and a half stars for the variety of magazines offered.  One half star for it's location/convenience factor.

Hit up: if you're looking for a magazine you can't find anywhere else and need a quick beverage while on your walk around town.

In for coffee and sandwich on New Years Eve Day-disappointed.
Used to be a fantastic place for panini's. Service, outside of a initial greeting-terrible!
Told ingredients for panini were sold out o.k. flexible, but waitress ended up yakking with her friend and our sandwich order came out but yikes she forgot drink order and further yakking with a friend- ignored us completely. Our order was mañana. We had to remind her-she ask us again what we ordered instead of looking what she rang up on the register (sigh). Horrible cafe mocha and bad service
will never go back unless they correct hiring and food availability.

    1. Smelled odd  2. Girl charged me $3 when the board said my coffee was $2.75  3.  After I ordered the girl stood there and chatted with coworker and didn't make my drink until I came back to the counter (was browsing the magazines).  4.  Coffee drink was awful, threw it out.  5.  Enough said.  Wait in line at Flying Goat instead.

The chicken ceasar sald was OK. I was REALLY HUNGRY and ate what I could find that was semi-healthy. A bit pricey (don't like paying $12 for a salad) and I've definitely experience better elsewhere. There was not a lot of people at Cafe Newstand. The worker there seemed to also be the cashier, food preparer AND threw out the garbage. She was super nice though. I won't be going back.  Better places to visit in the same plaza.

I went yesterday and the service was alright.  I ordered a ham and brie panini- it was $8.  The girl burned the first one and had to make another.  It was so bad that I ended up picking out the meat and throwing the rest away.  Brie combined with ham is not a good combo.  The bread tasted like some cheap thing from Food Maxx and it was chewy and stale.  I ALWAYS clean my plate when eating and this is a first for me- throwing food away.  The chips that came on the side were too greasy too.  Cute place, but just go to read a magazine instead of eating.

After a long day of wine and more wine, and a drive down to the city during rush hour to look forward to, a cappucino seemed like an excellent idea. We ran into Cafe Newsstand in downtown and I was sold by the modern exterior- I'm a sucker for these things. The inside was as tastefully decorated and there was a whole magazine/news section on the right- hence the name. But strip away all the wine country decor and you're left with a mediocre cappucino. The coffee was bitter and the foam didn't have that nice creaminess to it. If you need coffee, you could do worse but a town like Healdsburg has to have more options...

Awful. My boyfriend and I were headed north on 101 and needed coffee and a quick bite. After Google Maps sent us on a wild goose chase for two different coffee places we saw that this one was open and wandered in. The service was okay, but they screwed up the simplest things: two simple coffee orders and a bagel with cream cheese. I know the right blend of coffee can be a little difficult, even if being a barista is your full time job, so I cut them a little slack there, but why were our coffees lukewarm? We got everything to go, and when I got to the car I realized I apparently had to spread my own cream cheese...with a fork. I ended up giving up and using my finger. But at least when I spilled my coffee on myself during this failed venture I didn't get burned!

After a long weekend of wine and rich food, we were looking forward to a bagel and a coffee on Sunday morning before heading south.  This seems like the only place in town to get that, so we stopped in.  They had one person working on a Sunday morning during barrel tasting weekend...uh, big mistake.  The bagel took FOREVER and the latte was average at best.  The only plus is that we were able to nab one of the few outdoor tabels on a gorgeous morning.  The only thing clear to me after going here is that Healdsburg needs a good bagel joint.

I'm a little surprised at the other reviews.  I actually just started going here and have been really pleasantly surprised.  When I was a novice H-burg, I used to go to Oakville Grocery for lunch (but grew tired of the waits and the prices), and then I moved on to ordering from Big John's deli (which also takes forever and lacks ambiance), and now I forego all of the hupla and head straight to Cafe Newstand.  The build-your-own sandwich tastes fantastic, and the price is right.  No issues with service or wait time.  Of course, if you want something with more atmosphere, other places might be better.  But, as for a no-frills, good sandwich - this is one of my new favorites...

We wondered why there was no one eating, or  ordering here on a beautiful summer day. well now we know.
Without a doubt the WORST place in Healdsburg to stop for refreshment.
Like many other reviews have noted , the servers were busy talking to themselves, even though the place was empty, they did not acknowledge us. They threw a menu at us, and snarled.
We were hungry so we ordered sandwiches.
My "flank steak" sandwich  had one single knarled piece of meat, more like beef jerky, than steak. One tiny strip, on he whole sandwich. It must have been cooked days ago, and sat drying untill today!
They were so rude, and unfriendly, they just hurled it on the table, with no utensils or nabkins.
Two sandwiches and drinks for $26.
Whoever owns this place needs to reconsider how his establishment is run, as the only good thing I could possibly say about this rat hole, is that my dog thought the water in the water bowl was delicious.
If this is your last chance for food in Healdsburg, cross the street and try chewing the grass in the park, you'll be more satisfied.

it was thanksgiving day and i wanted to explore the town square. all of the places were closed exept this one.  i walked in and i seemed liked a normal cofee shop. i ordered the bagel with cream cheese, and a calistoga cranberry apple drink. the bagel was great! even better than noahs!! and the drink is now one of my favorite drinks.
