    Yummy Yummy!

Came here with three of my homo friends for "Endless Mimosas" (a version of bottomless haha). First off, the mimosas are made with a guava styled juice that makes it taste amazing. The food was cooked really well too! I had the juevos rancheros and it tasted really good.

The nice thing about this place is that it's not packed with queeny people that are sloppy drunks. It's a great atmosphere and the food is really good.

Definitely is on my Bottomless Mimosas List for sure!

My GF and I went to this place to get some soup as she wanted to give it a try and we weren't that hungry due to having come from Happy Hour at Prospect where they have $5 drinks and small plates.  They had a Cream of Mushroom soup of the day and it was tasty but it came with some tasteless triangle pieces of Naan.  We asked for some bread with the soup which they interpreted as putting in a whole bread order of Naan which costed a few dollars and also quite tasteless, unlke the Curry Boyzz just around the corner on 18th which is about half the price and great.

Now the 1 star rating is for a few things, one of which being charged for Naan bread order and the other for being charged $10/glass of their house wine.  We asked if they had wine and the server who also appeared to be the owner or manager didn't even know much about the wine and we never were presented with a wine list.

Who charges $10/glass for house wine that's not very good, apparently this place does and shockingly close by much better places such as Blush and others who have better wines and charge much less.

$10 house wine, are you kidding?  Not going back here again or if we do it'll only be from a deal or to give them a chance on FOOD only as some reviews showed they have potential there.

The two stars...100% based the quality of food.  The service was great!  My girlfriend and I went out for breakfast today...driving around the city and ended up in the Castro, en route to our final destination.   We passed by Cafe Mystique and decided to try it and try something new.  I ordered the chicken apple sausage and potato Fritata and my girlfriend had the Tuscan scramble like omelet.  The portions were huge!!!  One order is good for two people, maybe 3.  I took the first bite...and TASTELESS!  The portion size made sense...it was to compensate for the lack of taste and excitement in their food.  I had to put to salt,  pepper and tabasco to continue eating my breakfast.  The potatoes that came with the breakfast order were, yes, tasteless.  The whole wheat on the side was good though.  I had a Fritata on-board Hawaiian Airlines on my way to Honolulu and oh my, oh my...the Fritata I had there was so much better!

Our first time only of course, but since the food experience was not satisfactory at all...I don't believe we are going to their lunch or dinner menu.  Not even with their bottomless mimosas!  Going out to restaurants = spending your hard-earned money.  Yes, spending your hard-earned money on good food!!!  Definitely not on tasteless food!

I stopped in at Café Mystique Monday with Rodney on a whim; He saw the happy hour Bloody Marys on their charming sidewalk chalkboard.

The decor was pretty nice with lots of soft light, yellows, and deco mirrors.  The Bloody Mary was good, however the garlic fries were very mediocre, along with his salad and burger.  I think this place is best for the atmosphere and drinks.

I had to flag down the waitress twice because she was too busy standing at the bar talking.  She took our cards and charged both meals on my card.  She then tried to reverse it, but it locked up my card.  Blah.  I disliked that.  Nevertheless, they were nice enough about the whole mix up.

Sleepy Sunday, we were the first ones in here in the morning.
Bloody Mary, they seem to never get you buzzed, as if that's a problem at 9 in the morning...not this one, definitely packed a punch and I wonder if I should substitute it for coffee more often? Tuscan omelet was nice and full of artichokes, onions cheese and egg whites, the fruit was spoiled, the toast (which I don't eat anyway) was skimpy. But really I came for the omelet. Breakfast guest's crab florentine was excellent and she even enjoyed the potatoes which she usually leaves. Service was great. Ambiance was really nice and seemed like a romantic place in the evening. Looking forward to coming back for dinner!

    Breakfast feast.

We were not prepared for how much food was coming.

The Tuscan omelette (artichokes, spinach, tomatoes, onions and cheese) was the size of Texas. Egg whites subbed no problem. Potatoes and toast on the side. So much. So good.

Pancakes were loaded with bananas and blueberries. Figured two would be enough for two people. One each. We almost needed a third person. Gigantic. Great.

Chicken apple sausage on the side. Why? Why not.

Loved it all. Busier than expected. Word got out. Go. And bring friends.

    Very Delicious!

Last minute decision to dine here last night after remembering some of the best smells coming from this restaurant as I passed by it in the past.

I asked for the best thing on the menu and the waitress said "Lamb Burger" instantly I said yes and it was well worth the price and the taste.  I can only suggest to them that they use a little truffle oil with their potatoes next time and the dish will be out of this world.  Still very delicious.

My guest had the Pesto Pasta and it was delicious as well and definitely a go back to have.

My only one complaint was not asking how much the pitcher of the delicious Sangria cost ahead of ordering $ 30.00.  A little too much for two people, but for three would work out perfectly.  It was very delicious and cant wait to return for brunch.

My only regret was not coming sooner.

    Thank you!

    2 words... Lamb Burger!

I have to admit when ever I'm coming to the Castro for dinner we love to stop in at Cafe Mystique for food, their Lamb Burger is to die for, and I Hate Lamb, but this Burger is amazing and don't be shy folks, get the Garlic Fries with it, please, if your going to do it at all, DO IT!

We have also had their Bacon Wrapped Chicken Breast and it was very tasty and worth every bite, how could it not being wrapped in bacon.  The portion size is huge so unless your starving you will most likely have to take some home.

Cafe Mystique is a great way to begin introducing people to Mediterranean flavors and dishes as some of their items have very subtle flavors.

While your there though, make sure to order a pitcher of Sangria, because I do say they have some of the best tasting Sangria I've ever had! Goes down nice a smooth, just make sure you have a D.D :)

Great ambiance, I've always gotten excellent service, and depending on how busy they are sometime it's worth waiting to sit near the open windows along Castro St for the fresh air or right next to the fire place, regardless of where you sit, you'll enjoy your breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Beware!!! The parking is atrocious, but it is the Castro after all, I still wouldn't feel right warning people.

Came for Sunday brunch. Food was good, nothing amazing but good. The portion size was good for the price. The service was very friendly! The bottomless mimosas seemed a bit weak but it was only $8 so that is understandable and our glasses were never empty :-) We will definitely return!

The folks that work here are crazy nice. We basically showed up as they were probably getting ready to close and they stayed open for us and our large indecisive group. Their patience never flagged even when our attempts to split the bill undoubtedly cause they to have at least a minor headache.

Their lamb burger is really quite good also. Most lamb burgers suffer from being too tough but this one was quite moist.

The Falafel is sooooooo good.  It feels like another world in this restaurant.  I have walked by it so many times but never went in until a few nights ago.  Definitely glad I was taken there.  We had really good calamari and crab cakes too.

Oh and we ordered a pitcher of Sangria - and after all the drinking we did, we didn't even drink half of the pitcher!

Window seating across from the Castro Theater makes for a nice place to drop in for coffee and eggs benedict, or a romantic place to have a bottle of wine and beef fennel stew or seared scallops. There is a lot of variety and coherency to the menu; everything I've tried is delicious. Sumac is used liberally as a Moroccan spice (the "Mystique" factor) and adds a fruity, peppery, sour umami edge to everything it touches. Also, the homemade sangria is to die for. Cozy atmosphere and sophisticated decor. And garlic fries that stand on their own!

Needed a place to eat a small, quick bite before heading to the Castro Theatre.  Saw this place and its happy hour special and decided to give it a go.

My friends and I were pleasantly surprised.  Their happy hour deals were pretty good.  We ordered the hummus, naan, garlic fries, and lentil soup and none of it disappointed.  My one complaint would be that they were pretty skimpy with the amount of naan bread considering how much hummus they gave but not that big a deal in the end.

The lentil soup was delish as well as the garlic fries.  The fries looked like regular thick fries, but once you take the first bite I was surprised to find them crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside...my fave kind of fry.

I think draft beer was $3 during happy hour as well as their sangria being $4.95 a glass.

In the end....our bill came out to a little less than $12 dollars!!!

We didn't opt for any alcohol this time, but Cafe Mystique is on my list of happy hour destinations in the city.

    2.5 Stars for brunch

I wanted to like it, since we live so close to it, but I'm afraid the food is only standard. I tried the garlic fries, thanks to the recommendations of Yelp. That was probably the best part.

    We ordered:
    * Ricotta pancakes [fries on the side]
    * Spinach and cheese omlette (forgot the name, but we nixed the mushrooms)
    * Some sort of nut and banana crepe

They sounded GREAT, but everything tasted only okay. The pancakes were a bit too hard and the omelet wasn't cheesy enough... or something, it was a bit bland (I don't have a refined palette so I'm not exactly sure what was wrong with it).

That would be 3 stars for food. But it should have been one of the best meals of my life because I was dying of starvation by the time it arrived. We arrived around 1:30 pm for breakfast/brunch and it arrived over an hour later. I was ravenous and underwhelmed.

The servers were nice, but I don't think I'll be returning. I can't comment on their lunch or dinner options (lamb burgers actually sound quite tasty), but their brunch didn't do it for me.

I popped in for their happy hour while a waited for a friend. I was super early, so I got a glass of their happy hour wine and some herbed flat bread. The wine was terrible, but it was cheap, or so I thought. The flat bread could have been really good if they had not just thrown a handful for raw garlic on it.

When I got my bill, I was charged for two glasses of wine, when I had only had one. When the waiter went to correct it, the manager realized that he had mistakenly given me a more expensive glass of wine. I was the only one in the entire place so I could very clearly hear the the manager's dulcet tones as he berated his waiter for his own mistake. He then forced the waiter to make sure I paid for his mistake. I payed for the wine because I felt bad for the waiter, but that manager has lost my business forever.

My roommate and I were hungry at 10:30 browsing through the typical Castro restaurants and we looked inside this place, seeing a sophisticated decor and a matching menu outside, we went on in.

The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. Everything on the menu looked delicious! The waitress said it was a Moroccan-French-American fusion

We ordered the fava bean appetizer which was served with warm naan. Very good with a spicy kick.

Being a vegan I'm used to trying to adjust my orders to fit my diet, but there were an overwhelming amount of vegan options which was very exciting!

I ordered an amazing Split Pea Soup with truffle oil and mint for only $5!

one appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks all for only $37

Relaxing atmosphere, good music choices, friendly waitstaff, reasonably priced food that was good quality, and open late! This will be a place to bring people back to.

The only place in the Bay Area were you can get a Lamburger , the best I have every had!! The lamb is fresh & the seasoning are really the best. It also has the finest French Fries in SF, served hot with chopped garlic & parsley, which make them fantastic. The waiters are pleasant & Miguel the Chief does an awesome job. Plenty of parking behind Walgreen's & Sat & Sun brunch include bottom less Mamoza's , how good  is that :)

"Oh hey, I'm in the Castro and I'm straight!  Also, BREWSKIS. HIGH FIVES.  CRUSHING IT LIKE GRAPES.  YEAH BUDDY."

Men with small penises compensate for the lack of manhood by driving flashy exotic cars (I drive a Subaru).  Women with daddy issues compensate for the lack of security by banging anything with a pulse and a sizable wallet (I don't bang women with issues of any kind).  Straight men in the Castro compensate for the lack of guys around who are also into vag by being bros (I... uh, yeah).

Maybe I'm not fashionable enough or maybe it's because of my subconscious bro-like tendencies, but it was readily apparent to not only our waiter but the fabulous men a few tables down that my sexuality didn't match the rest of the clientele.  And I was there with a woman... and one of the fabulous men commented on that.  Recognizing this, he played up his bro-straightness and would probably feel right at home next to my friends and I as we crush cans of Natty Ice on our foreheads during our weekly NO MA'AM guys' nights.* Kinda funny, coming across that in the Castro.  And, as bros are wont to create bro-related portmanteaus whenever possible, one might call him a "Castbro."

I don't eat in the Castro often, but for a first experience, Cafe Mystique and its ambiance, food, and service left a good impression.  Between the two of us, the food was Really Fucking Good (my entree could have used a little more salt; they have salt shakers on the tables), the aforementioned waiter was awesome, helpful, and friendly (bro), and as a whole (it was quiet enough for us to hear each other talk) it made for a great impromptu dinner.

*We do not actually act like a bunch of college frat boys.  I am also done sounding like a complete tool, if you feel like reading more of my reviews.

Went there for dinner and we started with fried Calamari,  I had the Chicken Tagine and my partner had the Bacon Wrapped Chicken.

The Calamari was not fried far enough, or maybe the oil wasn't hot enough, so the dish came out kind of soggy and not really crispy. Big disappointent.

My Tagine was not really a stew. It was stewed vegetables with a huge chicken leg placed right on top. My leg wasn't cooked throughly and was slightly raw near the bone. It also lacked flavor. Needed salt badly. It's like they forgot to season it.

My partner's Bacon Wrapped Chicken looked good but he wasn't able to finish it.

Both dinner portions were massive. WAY too much food on one plate. It's not about value at that point, it's about wasting and too much of a mediocre thing.

Ambiance was nice and warm feeling.

The host who sat us (probably a manager) had way too much cologne on and it grossed me out when we sat down because that's all I smelled. When he delivered our food all I could smell was his cologne. Gross.

I went for brunch on a Monday. I had the granola, and my friend had the houmus plate -- both were excellent. The waiter seemed a little transparent; we could tell he was disappointed we only ordered appetizers instead of the pricier items he suggested. Aside from that, he was perfectly timely and courteous. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and décor; I will certainly be returning.

Do not eat here!  Living in the Castro area I have walked past several times and now know why my friends call this place Cafe MISTAKE!  Trerrible service and way over priced. I order the lemon chicken pasta special and was charged $16  Could have made this at home for less than $4  The real kicker is I had coffee with my dinner.  The waiter asked me if I wanted a refill and I said yes please.  He than states that we do not have free refills on coffee at night!  Really are you serious about this  Will not ever go again!

I wanted mac and cheese and go to Blue. He wanted the lamb burger and garlic fries here. Clearly I didn't end up getting my mac and cheese.. but this place pleasantly surprised me.

The decor is so cozy. We sat by the fire place. A lot of dark rich wood work throughout the restaurant and a cute taupe/capaccino color on the walls. The candles made for a very intimate experience. We shard the crabcakes.. which is my only complaint here. at $11 I was expecting at least 2 hamburger patty sized crab cakes.. but they both could have fit into my hand.. I would have gladly paid $6-8 for it but 11 is asking a bit too much.

Since I was freezing my buns off I asked for a hot apple cider. Hit the spot! I ordered the salmon fettucini - TO DIE FOR. the peas, and sun dried tomatoes were such a great touch. Loved it. And I stole some garlic fries too.

Two entrees, one app, a hot cider and two glasses of wine put us back $46. Not too bad. A cute little place. Nice staff. Very clean bathrooms. I'll be back!

They are open late, have a friendly staff, the food is decent and the prices aren't that bad. Mix that with the fact it's a sit down restaurant and in the middle of the tourist area in the Castro, and I'd say it gets 4 start. If it were some other place in SF, maybe I'd give it 3 1/2 start, but the fact it stands out in that area is worth another 1/2 star.

Their food is mediterranean: hummus, gyros, falafel, but with a lot of them with a US twist. They have a falafel sandwich for example, which I really liked. They have a Gyro plate, rater then a standard gyro in a pita. It's all pretty good food too, even if it's not strictly traditional as one might expect.

I'd say if you're in the area and are hungry, Mystique is a safe bet. If it's late and you don't feel like a slice of pizza, Mystique might also be your saving grace!

Went here after I graduated from UCSF and was amazingly surprised at the quality food. Best freakin' hummus I've ever had!!! Returned recently and had just the hummus (which comes with ground beef (love the protein additive) and a simple salad. Great dressing. 1 star for the poor service. The guy never checked on me after my order or after the food was served. The manager (?) opened the door (on a really cold summer night) and also turned the lights on FULL!, thus turning a wonderful warm, inviting, relaxed atmosphere into  "bus stop." Really? Did you ever consider your customers trying to have a comfortable dinner???!!!!! I don't get foreigner's lack of customer service. I've seen this a lot. They're simply oblivious to what the patrons desire. Close the damn door!!

I write this review for two reasons:  1) I really like their food, and 2) I think they deserve a lot more business.  The food is just really bona fide good.  I now have about 5 visits under my belt.  I am really into lots of protein and vegetables - I get that every time at Mystique.

I had their Moroccan spiced chicken that was just plain and simple seasoned to perfection and cooked to order - moist and tender.  Two big breasts!  (Although I am not really a breast man and this is the Castro, if you know what I mean?).  It was served on a bed of assorted vegetables that are in themselves a nicely put together melange of diced asparagus and other tasty morsels.

My appetizer is something I am completely hooked on.  It is a warm plate filled with huumus and doused in Olive Oil and some spicy hamburger meat with some flat bread to scoop it up with.  I don't ordinarily eat this kind of stuff, but I like it too much to resist.

I think this is a great neighborhood place that has a really great food offering.  I would suggest to the owners to maybe get rid of a few tables and make the ambiance a little more "mysterious" to go with the name.  But other than that, I like the food more than any other single place on Castro Street.

Went here again last night with the BF. We had been out all day and didn't feel like dinner at home. Recalled this place from before.

Once again, a great experience! The patrons around us were very friendly, nice relaxing atmosphere, family run and operated. The menu is eclectic with several Middle Eastern selections mixed with more traditional items. The BF had a lamb burger, I had pasta with chicken, sun dried tomatoes, peas, artichoke hearts. Both items were delicious and affordable.

A really, really strange experience on a Saturday night.

First, we were grateful to find a spot in the Castro open for dinner past 10 p.m.  C'mon SF, people eat late.  Time to step up!  At least this place gets that.

Our first server must have been brand new.  He was so nervous, and just kind of awkward - didn't have a clear sense of how to guide us through getting our beverages and food ordered.  He was sweet, though, and well-intentioned, though, so with time he'll get better.

When another woman came back to take our order, we ordered the fava bean dip appetizer.  She told us we should have the hummus instead.  We said we'd like the fava bean dip.  Geez.

Someone ordered the hummus as part of their meal, and it arrived with a pile of ground beef on top.  What?  This was new for me.  And the beef isn't mentioned on the menu.  And the person who ordered it was a vegetarian, so, um, FAIL.

Some positives:  I like the room, and the rest of our food was pretty darn good.  They just never really recovered from what was a really rocky start.  (And they should have comped the beef-smothered hummus).

What a nice surprise! Cafe Mystique is my new favorite neighborhood default eatery. Nearly all the food I've had has been excellent, especially the lamb burger, hummus with ground beef, the chicken cilantro and split pea soups, and the lamb stew. The lovely waitress is very friendly. The decor is warm, welcoming and relaxed. I also prefer the more ambient, low-key music to the usual pounding clubby oontz music favored by most establishments in the Castro. I think it's very reasonably priced, too.

My only suggestions for ways they could up the ante would be to season the grilled vegetables to make the salad w/ grilled veggies dish more interesting and offer a few more dairy-free brunch options. Oh, and I didn't try Mystique for the first few months they were open because their sign looks like a pizza, so I thought it was a pizza place, and I can't eat pizza because of the cheese.

Really it's a wonderful little place, and I go at least twice a week. I hope they do well and stay forever!

I have walked by that sign for a lamb burger with garlic fries way too many times. I finally went in and ordered it. Even though it was definitely well done when I asked for med-rare, it was STILL delicious. The mountain of French fries was tough to get through, but I think I managed just fine.

My date decimated his bacon wrapped chicken, so I am pretty sure he enjoyed it.

I loved the ambiance - I am a huge sucker for a fireplace.

Also, the waiter was super bro-y which was funny being in the Castro and all. I think he was trying to assert his straightness. It was entertaining and only added to my positive experience.

I dropped in here around 11ish drawn in by the BBQ skewer (see Meg loving shanked meat) and the naan bread.

    HOWEVER.

I was told the grill wasn't warm and they were only serving breakfast.

Uhh why pray tell then did you hand me a menu that has everything listed on it? Especially one that does not list specific times things are served?

I really only came in to get skewered, thus I left... unsatisfied.

As most yelpers know, the Castro is seriously hurting for good food. Thankfully, this place helps fill that need!

Favorites for me are the falafel sandwich and the halumi cheese sandwich. Both use naan as the bread and then are put in a panini press. Really delicious. I've also had both the lentil soup and the fava bean dip, also delicious. And their garlic flatbread is fantastic.

The only downside of this place is the fact that the menu covers they use are pretty ratty. It makes you think this place isn't well maintained even though the food and atmosphere are really great!

Went here for Sunday brunch last week with a really good friend.  We walked along Castro to see what was good for brunch and stumbled across this charming, modest establishment.  From the outside, this looks like a simple cafe but once you walk inside, the decor is simply warm and impressive. (I recall our waiter, George, said that the owner actually did all the detailing himself.)  George was great - he was extremely patient and helpful on making sure we were ordering what we really wanted.  My friend and I were going back and forth between the breakfast options (too many delicious plates to choose from, every single time we saw one of the neighboring plates with a new plate, we weren't sure what we wanted to order!).  Fortunately, we decided on the traditional French Toast and their poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce.

Absolutely delicious!!  We are both looking forward to going back here and trying their dinner menu. Can't wait ; )
