Another recommendation from the locals that did no disappoint. This little restaurant is kind of hidden and looks like (from the outside) a run down house. When you enter though the ambiance is awesome. Downstairs is a stage and coffee shop, upstairs the restaurant. I was there too early for live music (which I see others have commented on) but the food was awesome. I had fish tacos and will now try to reproduce that recipe at home!
This was a great little find and I'm happy I trusted the locals when sending me there. -

Delicious, and lovingly crafted food. I LOVE that they butter their homemade bread for you! Staff is sweet, don't go if you're in a rush... But you can always call to pick up! Locally owned, outfitted with neighborhood art, and a front yard that is a gem, Mundo is one of my favorite spots in town. Their offerings of beverages is outstanding- draft beer, delicious cocktails, fruit sodas, and a cafe mocha that is like liquid coffee chocolate mousse. The food is also very very good-my favorites are the from-scratch soups!

It's nice to have some veggie options when going out, and can be hard to find in most coastal towns. This place had some locally made tempeh.. so there was tempeh tacos and a tempeh burger on the menu. My husband got the tempeh tacos and I got the Mundo Salad. I really enjoyed my salad, but I didn't like the tempeh very much, although my husband thought it was decent. I would rather have lentils with taco seasoning or something on the tacos! I guess I'm just spoiled, being from the Portland area. I would go back if I was in the area and needed to, but wouldn't seek it out again. I thought the service was pretty good and friendly.. those gals were workin' hard! I liked the ambiance, and the live music was great.

I've always had great fun at this place. It has lots of healthy choices for dinner and the menu is unexpected. The aesthetics are funky times ten and we enjoyed some older locals who played jazz.

Bend, OR
Full disclosure, this was our first time eating here - we're out of towners. We heard good things from a friend and wanted to try it out. The service was brutally slow - reportedly someone didn't show for their shift and therefore one woman was left to work the upstairs herself, but it drastically affected our experience and menu prices aren't pro-rated depending on who decides to show.
Pros: The place has a casual, unique vibe. The menu has great options for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. My wife ordered the grilled fish tacos and they were very good, fresh taste and nice presentation. The beer list was good and thoughtful. I'm an oenophile as well but didn't check the wine list...
Cons: Service. It look about 30 mins for my beer to arrive, 45 for the appetizer (fruit and cheese) and well over an hour for our two entrées and one kid's pasta to show. I ordered the curry and it was a mis-step (bland and uninspired) but other dishes were nicely done.
Bottom-line, I do hope that our experience was an isolated instance, but poor service is unforgivable. Management should tighten the ship. Other folks got up and left and we should have as well. Two stars because certain aspects were very good. -

This place has a great atmosphere and great food. The interior is light, bright and quirky. We always eat here when visiting Newport. The burgers are great. Made with organic, grass feed beef. The coffee is from a local roaster and good. The salads are made with very fresh greens. Definitely recommend Cafe Mundo to any one looking for a great place to eat.

Ashland, OR
Cafe Mundo turned out to be a hidden gem while visiting Newport. The ambiance is great- funky and eclectic with mismatched decor and exactly how I like things: offbeat!
The food was delicious. We started with the Mezza plate and the roasted garlic. Ok, garlic was to die for with the deal only sweetened by some fab balsamic. Delicious, although maybe the bread to garlic ratio was slightly off (read: add more yummy garlic!). The Mezza plate was really good too: the baba ghanoush was the highlight, but the hummus was definitely tasty as well.
Portions are huge; so huge in fact, I was barely able to eat my entree, the special grilled cheese. Now, personally I am not a fan of pan-fried Parmesan outer-crusted sammies; however, i ain't complaining. It was awesome, and the side salad with poppyseed dressing was a great compliment to the greasy sandwich. The dressing is so good, I bought a pint to take home for only $5. My sweetie had a tempeh bento bowl. He wasn't wowed by the homemade tempeh, but he seemed quite happy by the rest of the bowl which was also ginormous.
The other excellent aspect about this place: the outdoor garden/play area where my kids had a ball playing with other kids, climbing trees, jumping off a neat stage, swinging from ropes etc. How cool is it to sit inside with my honey, drinking some yummy microbrews, listening to jammin' live music while my kids are off on their own, having their own blast (safely)? This is the first time we've had opportunity for something like that and we all benefited.
Overall, this place had a wonderful, magical sort of atmosphere. It's artsy boho-chic for sure, maybe a little pricey, but we had such a nice time that it was worth it. The waitress and food rocked, and that plus the chill vibe will bring me back again! -

Eugene, OR
Disappointing is the word that first comes to mind. Our grilled cheese sandwiches were alright (although only cheddar, not the 4 cheese sandwich they advertise in the local dining guide), but the kitchen was SLOW that day - we waited an hour to get two grilled cheese sandwiches and a bowl of soup.
This is a funky little place and reminds us of Eugene in it's quirkiness, but we'll not be coming here again.
Update: we were contacted by the owner after this review was posted with a personal apology for our experience. There are apparently two grilled cheese sandwiches offered, the 'plain' cheddar grilled cheese and a 'cheese of the world' sandwich. We didn't see the latter on the menu that afternoon, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this - perhaps we simply overlooked it? I'm also raising my star rating as our experience could have been the result of a 'bad day in the kitchen' and it's not really fair to give a one star review based on a single visit. -

We loved our dinner here - we had just rolled into town, unpacked and Yelped, walking the .2 miles to this fabulous eclectic and easy-to-hang-out place. The wait for your food is a tad long, but oh-so-worth-it. Fairly sure nearly everything is housemade/freshmade - my chicken mole tacos were beyond good, my hub's fish tacos were outstanding (we shared!), and the container of 'green salsa' had not one speck left in it. If you order the tacos, request this salsa - you will likely request the recipe like I did. Server was friendly and engaging - live music was another bonus.

This hip little joint is a favorite of mine. I spent one Halloween there and there was a live performance of fire dancers, tons of folks in creative costumes, sushi on the menu, and a feta dip that made me come back for more many times. Great joint if you want to eat outside in the evening as you get to stoke your own fire and grab a seat nearby.

Very hip place, with live music most nights. Lots of choices for food, with nightly specials and great desserts. Tacos, portabello burger and mezza plate are delish! Chai is SUPER yummy, but not mainstream so if you like that sweetish milk tea most places give you, be aware this chai is very peppery. Definitely a favorite place in Nye Beach!

Super eclectic and fantastic! The food comes up on a creaky dumb waiter and there is a lot to look at here. The outside patio looks fantastic for a morning coffee, it was drizzly and cold so I opted for indoors. I ordered the chicken mole tacos because they were out of the Carne Asada. It was a sweeter mole sauce then I prefer but the jalapeno cilantro purée really complemented it very well and helped to cut the sweetness. The shells are pan fried so the edges are crispy but the rest of the shell is pliable enough to hold the goods. I can't wait to come back and try the Carne asada version!

Stopped in on Friday night to listen to music and have dinner. (Met the Paul the guitarist at the bar @ Nana's Irish Pub, who recommended the place.) Good food--had an excellent Thai seared ahi salad with ginger dressing & a Ninkasi IPA. Eccentric decor (complete with twirling x-mas themed disco ball.) Fun music--kind of reminded me of a mix of Grateful Dead, Benny Goodman & Robby Robertson---they played lots of original tunes.

Cafe Mundo was great...
It had a cool kookie feel with a nice out door area... chalk board walls... up stairs bar and down stairs coffee shop...
I came for lunch and had a grilled cheese sandwich, side of bacon, and a great white beer with a garnish of orange....
The grilled cheese well exceeded my expectations... It had a nice unique thick bread that took it to the next level.... The bacon was perfect... and the beer was a excellent refreshing beer for a nice sunny afternoon...
The waitress was very friendly and gave us great service...
I look forward to coming back to Cafe Mundo the next time I am in Newport -

It was delightful eating here. Its a little artsy, funky, and fun, the food was great! The first time I've ever liked babaganousch. There was also a four cheese grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes that should probably be illegal because it is so good (comes with salad). Plus there was a jazzy type band with a stand up bass that was very romantic. Oh yeah, it was Valentine's weekend and so it being hard to find a seat may have been because of that, but I doubt it.
I thought the service was just fine and even if it were mediocre the quality and freshness of the food would have most certainly overcome that in my mind. Frankly Newport doesn't have many good choices for dinner so if your searching, stop. -

Funky fresh atmosphere and good food and drink, including some local exclusives. Nice people, pleasant atmosphere and quiet off-peak. I had some unusually good blueberry kambucha, Rogue, fish tacos. The sushi here isn't bad but smoked fish and cream cheese is an acquired taste. If that doesn't sound simply splendid, I'd go ahead and avoid those. Some pretty good GF offerings.

Ok, service sucked.
Both waitresses were surly and unable to provide the essentials you look for while paying $10 or more per plate. You know, a smile and some water in my glass?
The owner should shake the branch a bit and lose the staff that visibly showcases their malcontent.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Mid-week in November I walked in at 6:30 and half the tables were available. The band was just setting up. I told my waiter what beers I like and he brought out a pint of Great White that knocked my socks off. Loved the beer and the orange slice. Had another. Paired it with a dahl bowl, could have used more yogurt and chutney for the size of the bowl. I am sure they would have brought extra had I asked. Local vibes oozed from this place and local art hung on the walls. The band knew just about everyone that came through the door. The food and the beer was great. The grilled cheese smelled great and I would try that next time. Casual and cool. I would stop here again next time I am in Newport.

Easily some of the best food I have ever had in Nye Beach. Between the great food and the atmosphere, this is definately worth a trip. I had the chicken mole tacos, and they were perfect. Coffee and the music was perfect as well. The chef definitely puts care into each plate that she puts out.
My only complaint would be that they only have 3 beers on tap and they aren't very good. -

We went to the Oregon coast for a week and were striking out big time in the food department. We drove down to Newport and ended up at Nye Beach. Being hungry, we started looking for somewhere to get a snack and everything was closed at 1pm! (stupid off season) Cafe Mundo, however, was not. We went in, ordered some grilled cheese sandwiches($7), which came with a side salad and a cup of their soup of the day which was tomato pesto.
When the food came out we were pretty surprised. The side salad was huge, the sandwich was quite large and the soup looked like a bowl to us. All the food was awesome. My husband, who had been a little wary that there wasn't an option on dressing was in awe of their house dressing. It was amazing. The sandwich was really great and the soup was delicious; instead of being uniformly mixed, it was like they'd gently stirred the pesto into the tomato soup - amazing. Apparently, they make their own bread, which also came on the side of the soup, as well as the sandwich. It was really great, soft, nice texture, with a delicious flavor. We were stunned when our server, Jess, told us that it's also vegan.
The service was great, Jess was funny and informative on the area. Also, they send the food up with a pulley system from the kitchen to the seating area on the second floor, which is just kind of awesome.
We will definitely be heading back to Cafe Mundo the next time we go to the coast. If this restaurant was in Portland, it would be a huge hit. -

My wife and I stay in Newport a couple of times each year. When we go, we eat most of our meals at Cafe Mundo. Their menu fits our lifestyle perfectly. Fresh food, vegetarian offerings, and great beer. They've had live music a number of times when we've been there. Some bluegrass or blues last couple of times if I remember right.
Anyway, service was fine and the food was great. It's been a while, but I remember the grilled tomato and cheese sandwich was good and so was the squash soup. Check it out. -

Okay, it takes forever to get your food here but it's worth every minute of agonizing hunger. Owner and head chef Laurie Card rocks this place like no other--I will drive to the coast just to have dinner and listen to the amazing, and free, nightly music.
Between the fabulously fresh and tasty food (seared ahi, the Selena's salad, and chocolate ganash tart all blew my mind the last time I was there), brilliant art, communty hub feel, and groovy tunes, Cafe Mundo is a huge part of what makes Nye Beach something more than a kitschy tourist trap. If you want normal, go to Moe's, if you want ecclectic go to Mundo--just don't go starving... good food takes time. -
Review from Alyssa A.
This is THE place in Nye Beach. The nightlife scene doesn't get much better than this. Come here and enjoy fun live music most nights of the week. Depending on the band, the place can get packed out and the vibe is warm, friendly and energetic. Plus, the crowd is usually a good mix of young and old alike and I appreciate a place than can attract folks from all walks of life.
When I was there they had Ninkasi on tap so I can't complain about the beer selection. Several of their mixed drinks are made with some pretty quality alcohol and their drink pricing is very reasonable...especially when you consider what you'd pay in the city for the same beverage.
I've eaten here twice and thought the food was decent. It was not the most phenomenal meals I've ever had but the varied menu made it really nice for a group of my friends who ranged from carnivorous to vegan.
Their outdoor seating is amazing as well. Several of the tables have fire pits in them and when the music is playing inside, its fun to sit out in the dusk and listen from a distance. Plenty of dark corners for cuddling with your sweetheart as well. -

Argh. The hipster quasi-veggie in me wanted so much to love this place, with its quirky decor and welcoming feel. Went there at lunchtime, and the place was empty, but we figured it was probably more of an evening place. Wait staff was friendly and fast, so off to a good start... menu looks good, lots of fresh veggie choices, reasonably priced at $9-10 an entree.
Then, I ordered the tempeh burger. BIG mistake. It was gross. Not just 'bland gross,' but 'there's something distinctly unpleasant about this taste' gross. I had a few bites, and ate the side salad instead, which I suppose was quite good, but didn't fill me up at all. I didn't want to be rude to the waitress, so when she asked if I wanted a box to wrap it up, I just said "no thanks." Then she asked if there was something wrong with it, and I replied that it wasn't quite right. Well, most other places that want your business will comp it or offer to get you something else, but instead I found myself shelling out for something I didn't even eat! Not very pleased. If you don't order the tempeh burger, you might have a better experience. -

We got the tempeh sandwich, and the fish tacos. Delicious! We had to run (little one wasn't feeling the live music) and the waitress upstairs couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.
Awesome place, the music was fun, and the food was tasty and vegetarian options!! -

Noticed cafe while walking by. The place looked interesting and was intrigued and went inside. Once inside we noticed that nobody was around except the cook, after reading a sign directing us, we went upstairs.
I ordered a beer and a Latte. Then we waited, and waited after about 5 minutes, I was handed my beer. Then we waited for the latte, and waited and waited. I went up and asked about it after about 10 minutes and the women behind the bar said that they were getting it. Ugh, nothing like a little attitude from behind the bar.
About 5 minutes later we got our Latte. Can I take my tip back?
This place seems okay, but we could do with out the attitude that we got. Coming from Portland, we usually like the quaint little shops on the coast with friendly people, but this place felt like we were in some snobby coffee shop back home. -

Stumbled upon this place randomly. I loved it!
My friend and I were from out of town and were looking for a glass of wine and a cool place to sit. We got more than that.
We had our wine and ordered a hummus plate. Yum!
After a while we were pleasantly surprised with live music downstairs!
The decor was bohemian and unique. I wish we had a place like it back home.
Not to mention, my friend and I noticed that they seemed to be very "green". They also use a dumbwaiter to bring their food to the second floor! Cool!
Needless to say, we're going back tomorrow morning for coffee and breakfast.
5 stars! -

The wait was about an hour and they seemed to be understaffed and too busy to be attentive. By the time we were seated they had managed to run out of nearly all the entrees which was discouraging considering that left very few vegan and vegetarian options. I had the side salad with poppy seed dressing and brie and fruit plate which was alright but I was still hungry. The live music was entertaining but hard to hear the person next to you. There are many tastier options just blocks away.

Cafe Mundo is not your typical restaurant. Items range from Thai food, steaks to vegan fare. Everything is very unique and on Friday and Saturday's there is usually live music. There are a assortment of microbrews and domestic beer on tap and also a wide selection of wine. Food prices are on the bit of the spendy side for dinners but are very tasty. The one regret of Cafe Mundo is the time you are going to wait for your meal. Do not come hungry and be prepared that your meal will proceed slowly. Dinner here is more of a event and expect to be here most of the night.

cafe mundos was very hip an cool... we had a table with a fireplace in the middle. The brie and fruit plate was great but other then that blah! the sushi was dry an so were the fish tacos. The chicken mole taco was ok. if the dishes were $3.00 cheaper per plate it would have been a better experience, so,if you do go there, there are really good dishes and some really bad ones. all in all it was just ok.

I've been coming to this area for a long time and this is my favorite place to eat so far. It has a cool atmosphere and great food. I had the chicken pita and my dad had the clam chowder bowl. Both were excellent! I've often been disappointed with the food options here at the coast but this place is on par with bigger cities. The only downside would be how long it took to get our food. It was way longer than expected and we could tell a bunch of other people were waiting as well. But honestly, I would rather wait and have delicious food than bad food super quick. I would definitely recommend it!

The food was really good, but the wait was extremely long. I had no place to be, so wasn't too upset. A varied menu, I had chicken mole tacos, and my wife and I shared two types of sushi. Definitely try the smoked salmon sushi! The place itself was a little on the dirty side. In fact, when I walked in I thought the place was still under construction. Then I saw the Eugene Weekly and it all made sense;-)

OK, this place had an interesting but slightly cheesy hippied-out semi-industrial open lofty atmosphere. All plusses, I guess. Unfortunately the service is completely burnt. The goth teen tattooed server (which should have been a plus) had attitude and got my beer order wrong twice. First I got red wine, then that belgian raspberry stuff. Then, the tempeh fries were greasy and took an entire hour to arrive. Hey, mistakes are ok, attitude is off-putting. I asked for my check since they didn't arrive and they said they're on their way up this pulley thing. I lied and said I had a reservation and was in a hurry, and two servers both said in unison, "You're going to eat twice?" It was very curious. OK, you've been warned. I have never stiffed a waitress until now.
