2 drinks for $6 pink geisha
Butterfly roll, bagel and shrimp tempura

Larry was our server and he was the best! After hearing that my sis and I were Cafe Mochi newbies he gave great suggestions and filled us in on the best days and times to come back again. I definately would love to have him serve us on our next visit.

The drinks were great, but not very strong. The rolls were great, though with the butterfly being my absolute favorite. The thin slices of avocado and shrimp on top just set it off.

I loved that the restroom was clean and odor-free. Also the pink and black decor was hip and a little edgy without being tacky.

I eat Cafe Mochi pretty regularly, and have done so since its beginnings. While I am not a sushi fan some of the other items on their menu tempt me enough to make return visits.

The pork Katsu is something I highly recommend if your not a sushi fan, you can get it in a pork or chicken version, and its lightly breaded and comes with a delightful Katsu sauce for dipping.  you also get a side of steamed veggies, and some steamed rice.

another non sushi recommendation is the chicken teriyaki, its not as highly recommended as the Katsu, but it truly is a close second on the non sushi menu. also be sure to have an order  of edemame as an appetizer, they do it the best and add just enough of the sea salt for perfect results..

they do have a lot along side of the building however when the evening comes around and the crowds flood in, the parking gets scarce.. there is also street parking on 2 streets around the building..

3.5....rounded up for now. The chaos of picking up and order is a definite -1. The restaurant is like one hallway with nonstop traffic.

Some of the sushi was excellent though, and it's a closer and less expensive choice than Wasabi or Kampai so we may patronize them again.

Parking can be SUPER annoying in this area.

We've been to Cafe Mochi twice now.  Both times we've been pretty impressed with their sushi.   We also really enjoyed sitting on their patio.  South Grand had some interesting pedestrians, so entertainment is built in.

Our server recommended the Volcano roll, we also ordered a Godzilla roll.  I guess these are spicy, but since I'm pretty generous with the wasabi anyway, it's kind of hard to tell.   To round out our meal, we got salads and a California Roll.  Now, at most sushi places, this would be just about the right amount of food.  Here, though, it was way too much.  These folks make some big rolls.   I think these three rolls were under $30 in total and it was definitely all we could eat.

We loved all of it.  The big winner was the Volcano roll, which comes with a pile of warm crab on top, which is kind of weird, but delicious and very impressive.   The Godzilla was also very good.  Cali roll and salads were the usualy standard.

Service was spotty, but we weren't in a big hurry, so it suited us fine on a beautiful night.

    We're definitely fans.

I came to Cafe Mochi last weekend with a friend. I've been dying to try this place, so I'm glad I was finally able to.

The place itself is pretty tiny, but they have a nice outdoor patio that would be pretty sweet for people watching. During our visit, the patio wasn't open, so we sat inside.

We both ordered miso soup to start; he ordered a sashimi platter, and I went with...umm...what DID I go with? This is why I need to stop procrastinating on my reviews...

I'm pretty sure I went with the dragon roll, since that's what I ALWAYS go with.

I'm the snobbiest of sushi snobs, so my expectations were high.

Cafe Mochi delivered, BIG TIME. While it wasn't the Best Sushi I've Ever Had (that award still goes to Kampai), it was pretty darn good.

One big flaw (and the reason why Cafe Mochi gets 4 stars and not 5) is the service. The service SUCKS. When we visited, the place was practically empty. There was one other couple there, so there was no reason why our waitress was so unattentive. She barely came to check on us, and wasn't very friendly at all.

Oh, and she completely forgot our miso soup, which was a huge bummer. By the time she came around, she already had our entrees in hand, so it was pointless to ask for it. Whatever.

I will definitely come back to Cafe Mochi, despite the service hiccup.

I love this place!  Great prices, great variety on the menu, and always great service.  We usually get the Spicy Tuna Roll, Spider Roll, and/or Volcano Roll.  (The Volcano Roll is amazing).  Also, try the crab rangoons - you won't be disappointed!

SO... I Love the Sushi (Bagel Roll KNOCKS MY SOCKS OFF) however, if you do not have a lot of time this is the wrong place for you. Service is always friendly but they appear to be understaffed and frantic during Happy Hour. It makes it hard to enjoy your time spent due to the fact that service is so slow..
All of this does not change the fact that i will return over and over....just with lower expectations

Just went for lunch, and sat on the patio on this beautiful day.

Everything was AWWEESOME!! Especially the lunch Special.

I got the Sumo special, which you choose from, any three rolls you want for $12.00!!  And this isnt a 4-5 piece roll, I think its ten, literally!

To go along with value was, superb taste and quality!!
To top it off the waitress was super helpful andf friendly.  She was the only server but managed to knock out nearly six tables at once with no problem!  Everything came out in a timely manner! =)

Value, Taste and quality, and service. No reason not to give it a 5 star.
Plus everyone on town always raves about this place!  F yea!

I've been back to Mochi several times since the visit where they flopped, and it's been consistent and ohmyGod so incredible. It's officially, indeed, the best sushi I've ever had in St. Louis.

Five stars, even though I have to send my sushi back every single time... I can't have fish eggs on top, but they forget every. single. time. The sushi is good enough that I don't even care. The Godzilla, white tiger, and volcano roll are still the must-trys, and I'll probably never stray from that order.

    Go! Eat good sushi!

Cafe Mochi is a must try if you're a sushi-lover. It's also a great place for people who haven't had sushi to get their feet wet. Since it is an Asian fusion restaurant, they offer a less traditional, for a lack of better word, menu.

I'm not sure if there's anything else for me to say other than their rolls are amazing, happy hour is the best time to come, decent prices, and good service.

Also, if you're not a sushi eater, they have soups, salads, and other entrees that will cater to you. Their deep-friend cheesecake is to LIVE for. I've never had anything like it!

All the experiences I have had at Cafe Mochi have been wonderful. There service is great with friendly servers and staff and the food has been wonderful. The only thing I've had that wasn't exceptional was one of their yellow curry dishes. But it was still good - just not as good as other places in St. Louis.

Their sushi is exceptional and their happy hour is virtually unbeatable when it comes to sushi joints - you can get a feast and drinks for under 20 dollars easily. Overall, this is in my top three sushi restaurants in St. Louis and it should be in yours too. Oh, and get the plum sake!

I have been to Cafe Mochi twice and recommend this restaurant, especially for happy hour. Their happy hour, if I recall correctly is from 430 to 630, has a large assortment of rolls half off and buy one get one free Saki. You'll have to ask for the Saki because we found out that it's not on the happy hour menu. I was impressed with the speed of the service, especially for having a packed house of hungry sushi lovers.

If you are looking for something to try, try the Fried Bagel Roll. It's an absolute
    delight.

Last week during some of our gorgeous weather I was desperately in need of a drink and a patio somewhere. These needs combined with my intense craving for sushi brought me to Cafe Mochi.

J and I snagged a patio seat and were immediately helped but a seriously enthusiastic server. I got some sort of coconut rum concoction for my drink and loved it so much I ended up with a 2nd one. We ordered the mochi rangoons and gyoza, both of which were delicious and I would have been satisfied from the apps and drinks alone. For dinner I ordered an Alaskan roll and J had the salmon. I liked the roll, certainly wasn't the best I ever had but it was still good, however the rockstar of the night was that salmon dish. Holy delicious. Service was good all evening and the prices really weren't bad, although I need to make it back for a happy hour.

I go here almost every week.  The sushi is wonderful and the staff is very friendly and work hard!  Early on they had some kinks to work out with service, but it's all smooth sailing now.  They've also recently expanded and the extra space is much needed!  I love cafe mochi!

As others have explained, Cafe Mochi looks like a coffee bar. It's a small space, with a small patio. They have an AWESOME happy hour with 1/2 price sushi/rolls. The discount is on basic maki, not specialty rolls that tend to be bigger/more elaborate, but it IS an awesome deal when you only pay 3 bucks for any sushi.

Unfortunately, it gets so packed during happy hour. Too packed, but good news is coming! Expansion! Cafe Mochi is expanding to the building next door and they will have a second patio. So, starting in mid- August, I will be more confident about going for happy hour. Yay!

This is a weekly date spot for my boyfriend and I. We love coming here for happy hour because the sushi is good and the price is right! We are recognized when we arrive and are seated quickly. The sushi usually takes awhile to make because they are so busy for happy hour. The atmosphere is cozy and modern in the restaurant with fun music. We usually order the spicy white tuna, nigiri, octopus roll and vegetable rolls. YUM!

I used to hate sushi. Really honestly hate it. My boyfriend loves it. He used to try to get me to eat it, and I could never like it. I even tried a piece of every sushi he order at Sub Zero, and still hated it. Then one day, I was craving sushi. So we got some "vegetarian sushi" from Trader Joe's. But that seemed to only make me want more sushi. Not wanting to spend Sub Zero prices on something that I might not really like, we decided to check out other sushi places. And we happened upon Cafe Mochi.

Unaware of their happy hour, we checked it out that night, and ordered a lot of sushi. The prices are so nice that even when it isn't happy hour, you can get a lot of food for cheap. Everything we got that night was tasty, and the staff was so totally awesome.

Then we came back during happy hour and brought a friend. He doesn't like sushi, so he ordered one of their hot meals. He really liked it. My boyfriend and I ordered so much sushi, we almost needed to be rolled away.

I know it is against traditional sushi, but I love the Dynamite roll. It's a spicy tuna roll, battered in tempura and fried, served with sriracha, wasabi mayo, and a spicy mayo. It's fantastic. I also really like the White Tiger roll. It's pretty damn tasty, and huge. But really you cannot go wrong with any of their rolls, or anything else for that matter. The nigiri is really tasty too. Also, if you are ordering appetizers, I strongly urge you to get the soft shell crab! It is amazing!

The service is fantastic here. Everyone is super nice, and I've never had slow service. The waitstaff is wonderful!

I can not imagine going anywhere else for sushi. Or bringing my friends and family anywhere else for it. We celebrated my birthday here, and even with a large group and complicated orders, everything went amazingly well. We've brought so many people here because it is absolutely wonderful, and when any of my friends from out of town visit, I have to bring them here for a great dinner.

A++++++++++ We be back again soon!!!

I agree with Timothy G, that I thought this was a coffeeshop. A sushi place that went under my radar for too long! I am ashamed.

BTW, this is a carry-out review.

Friendly staff, my order took less than 10 minutes to make (spicy octopus roll, spicy tuna roll, california roll for a total of 24 rolls...they gave me two sets of chopsticks....obbbbviously Cafe Mochi hasn't seen me put some sushi away! No second dining companion...I ran a train on that sushi!)

It was pretty good. I wish the rolls had been a little tighter, but it was tasty. The spicy octopus was my favorite. I was glad they chopped up the octopus into little pieces, otherwise that chewiness would not have worked in a roll.

    California Roll - $5
    Spicy Tuna - $7
    Spicy Octopus - $6

I didn't get any nigiri because it seemed pricey (2 pieces of tuna for $5.50? Really?), and you could only get a minimum of two pieces. i know paired nigiri is the traditional way, but I like my nigiri a la carte.

Maybe it's just withdrawals, but for some reason I was longing for Kampai when I was eating this. Their rolls are just perfect to me. So, Cafe Mochi isn't bad, but for some reason, it's not my favorite, and I can't put a finger on why.

I will be back, because they have some creative menu items I wish to try (Crunchy Bagel Roll - salmon, cream cheese, avocado, tempura fried with eel sauce...YUM - $8) and their happy hour sounds fire.

    Happy Hour 4:30-6:30pm Tues-Sat
Half Price nigiri and select rolls
    Domestic beer - $2
    Imported beer - $3
    Tokyo Sunrise (mango/coconut rum) 2 for $6
    Tropical Melon (pineapple/melon liquor) 2 for $6
    Pink Geisha (coconut milk/vodka) 2 for $6
    Hot sake 2 for $6

Not sure if that means you HAVE to order 2 drinks to get the special, if you can mix and match, or what.

Aren't you glad I took home a menu for reference? I do it just for you, Yelpers.

Also, there were complaints of it being small, which it definitely is, but they have a nice, sizable patio.

OK, I'll confess and say that the first, oh, ten times I drove past Cafe Mochi, I thought it was a coffee bar.  So maybe I need glasses, but when the beautiful wife and I finally stopped here, we were pleasantly surprised.

As noted by others, happy hour is awesome, though it gets completed packed in there (thank you to one of the servers allowing the two of us to sit at a six top.  I did say if something smaller opened up, we'd move.  Wasn't necessary).

Anyway, did I mention that happy hour here rocks?  A salmon and avocado roll for $3.50?  2-for-1 drinks ($6 total)?  Wicked awesome!

OK, here's when I checked my nuts -- I ordered something called the "Pink Geisha."  It is vodka, coconut milk, and (I believe) Grenadine.  These are freaking fattening craptastic delicious!  Crazy good.

Our rolls were really good -- as the wife noted, it's like they do a quick steam or something of the fish.  Which might be against the rules, but it added a certain something in terms of flavor.

I had some Vietnamese entree which was fine (I really wanted some noodles), but in the grand scheme of things, I should have gone with another roll.

We'll be back -- though I might leave work early to make sure we get a table.

I really enjoyed this place! A step up from Seki Sui down the street - which is, well, kind of dumpy (I mean the decor, but the food there is just kinda eh as well).

Anyway - cafe mochi- which gets it's name from the  mochi coating on the ice cream dessert it serves (the coating is some sort of sweet rice mush) was very satisfying.  We started with edamame and gyoza as apps - both were delicious, especially the gyoza. Then we just stuck to rolls - a traditional California (very good), the vegetarian (best veggie roll I've had) and then the volcano roll, which was every bit worth the cost (a little pricey).

    I'll be back.

I have been to Mochi a handful of times before today and I have always enjoyed my experience. The wait staff is always friendly and attentive. However tonight was unpleasant to say the least! The service was great as it always is, but the food left me and my girlfriend sick afterward. We had our usual...edamame, seaweed salad, spicy tuna rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, and the volcano roll. I don't know what made us feel like we did but I'm not willing to go back to find out :(

I have to say first off that I'm a vegetarian- and I was very disappointed with their vegetarian options.  They are far and few between.

Our server never came to us until 15 minutes after we had been seated and he stated, "Do you guys need a few more minutes?".  Seriously?  This set the tone for the lack of service for the rest of the evening.  He was nice enough but it took him forever to get back with us, and looked at me like I was crazy to order something without crab.  I hate being critical but it was just such a frustrating experience.

I will say that the atmosphere was pretty- I really liked the chandeliers and decor.

The food was also good, but again I wish I had had more options.

Pricewise I'm not a good one to compare because I have not been to many sushi places to compare it with.

I went to Cafe Mochi last night with the expectation of Midwestern sushi.  Having worked at a sushi bar for a couple of years in college, it always makes me laugh when people compare land-locked sushi to sushi in California, Hawaii, or... Japan.  Despite the amazing upgrades in refrigeration trucking these days, one is still ordering sushi hours upon hours away from any ocean.  Catfish sashimi and crayfish rolls haven't exactly caught on yet.  And the scoffing remarks of "Americanized" sushi?  You are in a state whose average fashionista is still wearing Looney Tunes sweatshirts and sleeveless muscle sleeves.  Learn to love it.  Or at least tolerate it.

That being said, I really enjoyed the Lemon Drop roll and the Caterpillar roll.  Unabashedly loving "Americanized" sushi, I personally appreciated the cream cheese in the rolls.  I think it always adds an interesting texture.  I prefer interesting taste over tradition any day.  Having now read reviews, I look forward to trying the Volcano roll.  The only roll I didn't like was the Bagel roll, which we decided to try due to its "deep fried" nature.  I was not a fan, but you live and you learn.  It was exactly as advertised.

The only thing that was frustrating was the amount of time it took to receive the food.  I understand being patient with sushi- one is not at Applebee's.  However, on a Tuesday night that wasn't crowded at all, it took us close to an hour and a half to get our food.  That's a little much for a week night anywhere.

It's not the best I've had in St. Louis, but it's not the worst, either.  I intend to go back and try the Volcano roll!

I've been here twice within the last two weeks...It's close to the house and someone recommended it.  The first was lunch on Saturday.  The pineapple fried rice was good.  We were allowed to order it even though it was not usually served on the weekend.  The second time was disappointing.  I waited over 30 minutes.  Three parties came after me and served before me. The price was right though.  $3 for sushi rolls!  3 stars for the efforts on Saturday and the happy hour prices.

Happy hour is from 4:30-6:30 on Monday-Friday, AS WELL AS SATURDAY!

I came here, again, but this time with a good friend who wasn't well-versed on sushi. I found out that the happy hour here includes beverages! They have Bud products for $2 a bottle (!) and select cocktails/sake are two for $6!

The Spicy Octopus roll seemed more spicy this time around - but I'm into it! It's still my favorite.

The Spicy Tuna Roll had nothing on the Spicy Octopus, but the roll itself was great. Imagine creamy spice and you got it.

We also had the Veggie Roll, which pleased us well enough. There's not much description that can happen - fresh veggies in a well-rolled sushi roll.

The Eel Nigiri was top notch. I love finding decent fish at a sushi joint in a landlocked city!

Service seemed better this time around. Same crew (does anyone else ever work here?) and I actually wound up at the same table. This place gets crowded and no tables seem to be available after the first 1.5 hours of happy hour. So, heed my warning: arrive early or don't arrive at all. (If you want to be cheap, that is!)

Sushi is an art!  That means:  A sushi chef should know how to craft his art , with the right ingredients and portions, and display with pride.

Well, at Mochi - disappointedly it's a novice artist working to just sell the tiny-empty rolls. I love Japanese cuisine from traditional to very modern- flare, sashimi to sushi. Mochi is a very basic Asian -Vietnamese restaurant, which serves sushi, it's not a Japanese restaurant. With all do respect , calling Mochi a Japanese restaurant is a grave insult!

There is nothing Japanese about the menu, it's very Americanized with the typical -fusion-meals like the all mighty Teriyaki bowls and Tempuras. We ordered 4 different rolls only to be disappointed with the content and portions for the price we paid. The taste- AHI was nowhere to be found, it was in such small portions that made me almost send it back, but I didn't.  Another one of my favorite rolls= SPICY AHI, which was nowhere near the pepper, not enough fish, not enough flavor, I had to reluctantly ask for Sriracha on the side, even with the big lump of wasabi! The Wasabi was very MILD!
Hamachi Kama, which is usually succulent and prized was brushed with teriyaki sauce, what a disgrace!

Tempura roll- tiny shrimps didn't qualify for the roll itself. Miso soup tasted like the ones I buy in store, packeted. Nigiri- very SMALL and dry. We ordered one of the special rolls which had minute amount of nori and rice, and even smaller amount of ingredients!
Anyhow, not so surprisingly, they have a Vietnamese menu as well. Maybe , they should just stick to calling MOCHI a VIETNAMESE  restaurant and not a Japanese one!!!

Although I shouldn't expect a lot from Midwestern sushi places , I was still a little disappointed with the Mochi sushi makers! They are doing the sushi experience Injustice!

THE SERVICE: was slow, and kind of confusing. The server didn't seem to understand the menu ... maybe she was new, or ?

I know nothing beats the real -deal in Hawaii , where Japanese food is #1.

I think i could eat sushi at Cafe Mochi every day!
Cafe Mochi has some addictive options.  If not for anything else, try the Volcano Roll.  you will not be sorry, and you will want it every day after that.
As an FYI, during happy hour at Cafe Mochi, they offer sushi at half price.  However, the only half price sushi are the options listed on the front side of the menu they have...which excludes all the super-fabulous things (like the Volcano Roll or the Lemon Drop Roll)!

My gal and I went down and enjoyed their happy hour special (1/2 off rolls).

Was very impressed first time we had been there and will definitely be back.

First time I ever had Conch... and I am hooked!! The volcano roll is what it's all about.

Went there for dinner after the Cardinals game.  Great little place!

We ordered the gyoza (made in-house) and could have eaten several orders.  Really flavorful and not at all greasy like some places.  My dinner came with a soup or salad.  Considering the heat index had been over 100 for hours, I went with the salad.  I don't know that I've ever described a salad as 'refreshing' but that is exactly what I said at the time.

The kids had a shrimp tempura roll and a California roll.  The little one likes eel sauce on her shrimp tempura roll and they gladly accommodated her requested modification.  It must have been good because it disappeared in no time.

I ordered the sushi dinner which included 10 pieces of nigiri and a volcano roll.  My wife ordered the sushi appetizer (4 pieces of nigiri and half of a Cali roll) and a Hawaiian roll.  The food arrived in a decent amount of time and the presentation of everything was great.  The fish was very fresh tasting and we both especially liked the salmon and big-eye tuna.  I also had some unagi and white tuna in my order and both were great.  I especially enjoyed the toasted sesame seeds on my eel.

As for the two specialty rolls - we probably could have ordered those and called it a light dinner.  My volcano roll was absolutely delicious and I really liked the spicy scallop and surimi topping with what seemed like sirihachi sauce mixed in.  My wife and 9-year old daughter devoured the Hawaiian roll and agreed that it was almost worthy of the title 'desert' rather than entree.  I managed one piece and certainly enjoyed it as well.

We very much enjoyed this restaurant and will certainly return!  Not sure how I could give a better endorsement.

I had the pleasure of visiting Cafe Mochi this past weekend for an event that was being held there. This was the first time I've ever had sushi in my life and I must say the experience was great! The sushi was absolutely awesome! I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki that contained grilled, seasoned chicken glazed in teriyaki sauce and served with white rice and your choice of steamed or stir-fry vegetables. I opted for the stir-fry veggies, which also came with either miso soup or a house salad. Since it was like 111 degrees outside, I opted for the house salad with ginger dressing. The salad with the ginger dressing was awesome! I've never had ginger dressing, but it was very tasty on a salad. I also ordered the Philly Sushi Roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and scallions wrapped in steamed rice. AWESOME!

If you are a sushi lover, I would recommend visiting Cafe Mochi for some great sushi and a great atmosphere. The patio area is also great. I'm already making plans to go back there within the week. Maybe I'll take my son there for his birthday next weekend.

I was excited to try this place after all the hype, but everything was sub par. The service was particularly awful considering the amount of people in the place. The sushi was average. I don't understand why they have so many fried rolls. The spicy octopus roll was good. The octopus and seaweed salad was average...

I've been eating here for a couple years now and just decided to write a review. Nice atmosphere, patio, fresh fish and happy hour! The service is pretty good the majority of the time. The volcano roll is awesome: I cant remember whats in it except for the delicious spicy scallop and crab mixture on the inside. Their Yaki Soba is delicious as well and also a great value. Their miso soup is also excellent. I usually get the same things everytime I go

Wow. Just read the last review and although I respect its author's opinion, my opinion is the exact opposite and probably far less emotional and certainly lacking the unnecessary, but cute reference to certain forms of ritual suicide.

    Come on. It's sushi!

You can't get mad at sushi, especially at Mochi, where it's plentiful, the service is excellent and it's fresh. Oh yeah, it's also inexpensive. 1/2 happy hour priced sushi is not a new concept, but at Mochi, you can definitely get your order in... And fast.

I'd also like to mention the other non-sushi dishes... Why do Americans always think that Japanese food is only sushi? I suggest try the yakisoba here. Mochi has elevated this dish to another level. I suggest getting it with shrimp.

They also have a wonderful Vietnamese menu, which is great for groups that end up on South Grand, but are unsure of what to eat. There's something for everyone over here and each dish is made with loving care.

Ultimately, I've never had a problem with their sushi, like the previous author has stated, and I think I've had my fair share of sushi in life. This is not 100% completely traditional Japanese sushi rolls, but then again, there aren't many Japanese American restaurants that are.

So if the other author is reading this, I suggest she chill out about her concepts of "avante garde" and Japanese food... even though she seems to know a LOT about Japanese cuisine... And maybe sit down with some friends at Mochi, and try something else on their extensive menu.

And then follow that with their deep-fried cheesecake. Yes. I said it.

    Deep fried cheesecake.
