Ok, listen berkeley. Today I have a special treat for you: I'm reviewing with my twinsey Susannah D. So prepare for double-time on this review.
Let's get the basics out of the way: 'cross the street from campus, okay for studying, split-floor and classical music (no lady gaga, for better or worse). More spacious than most cafes.
Susannah: Their chai's pretty good. Solid level of foam, which is sweeet. A water fountain, which is kinda convenient.
Asaf: Their coffee's fair, their soy hot chocolates makes me sad. 90% foam (we disagree about the plus-or-minus status of foam). Also, the service is "we get you your shit and you take care of the rest." As in, expect none, not even a "hello." I've had experiences here where I'm not even acknowledged, I just hand over the card.
On a more positive note, sandwiches are said to be of quite good quality, though neither of us have tried their "food food."
But all in all, "it's a pretty basic cafe." You gotta get some studying done (good for groups), get some chillin' in, come here. You're looking for more, gotta walk more than a block! This review happened in 2 minutes. During one of which Susannah distracted me. She's totally sweet spice and I'm bitchy spice, apparently. Whatevs.
I only like the greek salad here. Drinks are really bad. I KNOW because I used to get drinks from strada and ONE day I got a drink at milano and I could definitely taste the difference. A BIG DIFFERENCE. Made class go by very slowly in the morning.
Gross bathroom (even for Berkeley) and it's kind of unnerving that it's right next to the kitchen.
Many more bums inside taking naps on those tables that we eat on...Almost ALL of the tables are uneven.... annoyingly jolting from side to side as you try to highlight, write, or read. I would definitely not recommend studying/spending money at this cafe....
This is a review of Cafe Milano's espresso.
Cafe Milano's espresso fucking sucks.
hints of motor oil, with strong notes of burnt rubber and battery acid, plus a lingering charcoal aftertaste.
And yes, I came back to give them a second chance, and was again astounded by the undrinkable sludge they SELL to hundreds of students every day...
A quick place to get a decent tasting sandwich. It was pretty fresh and includes a side salad and drink. For 6 bucks. I had the turkey sandwich which was decent on whole wheat bread. The salad had very sweet dressing which I could have done without. Some place to chill at.
I am only here because I have no choice.
I needed a cafe that was close to Telegraph x College and indoors, as I have a laptop and it's forecasted to rain heavily this afternoon (which has all of the Bay Area freaked since this is the first major storm of the season. As an aside, I spent the last year in NY and I think a major storm here is still considered a light drizzle on the East Coast. But anyway...) Strada was out of the question as the indoor seating is about as plentiful as the parking in this area (read: nil).
So I arrived, scavenged for 10 min looking for a wall outlet (in this large cafe, there's only about 6 outlets TOTAL, most of which are upstairs). I couldn't find any so I'm now running off of very little battery power and was mad enough to spend it posting this review. I asked for the WIFI password. It cost me $1 to get the 20-character password. ONE DOLLAR?
And, by the way, you can't really get good Airbears or Free WiFi coverage here; not sure why, as it is right across the street from Cal. Anyway...
Did I also mention that the food is mediocre quality? The coffee is certainly cheap ($1.35), but you get what you pay for: watered down, and flat-tasting. The food here is okay. Keep in mind, though, that SF Soup Company is 2 doors down... and Durant food court is 1 block south... and the food there is loads better.
The service is average. These aren't exactly the people who will smile at you when you order. They'll just ask you what you want, then give it to you. At least they usually get the order right.
Bathrooms: well, there's one. I'd say it's on the border between sanitary and thank-God-the-lights-aren't-brighter.
The seating makes me happy that I have built-in cushioning on my ass. It's predominantly wooden benches that sink backwards. As in further away from your table and workstation. Smart design, eh? There is also plenty of ambient lighting, thanks to the abundant windows and skylight. But the lamps are dim, so if it's not a bright day outside, the entire cafe is really dim.
The crowd is mostly undergraduates who are chatting, so the ambience is noisy. I wouldn't count this as a wonderful, serious place to study without headphones.
In short: I'd come here more as a last resort. It's good for a quick-stop-cheap-coffee detour, but not a sit-down-and-spend-hours-studying cafe.
This was my favorite place to get coffee in Berkeley.
The drinks weren't extremely good but were consistant. I hated though that the guy making the drinks would always draw pictures in chocolate on the top of their mochas for women but never for me...thats no fair! SEXIST!!! lol
The food isn't that exciting or good either but was a good fix when I was cramming for a test or doing hw.
The thing I enjoyed the most about milano was its abundance of seating and I never had a problem finding a place to sit. The best time to come was on sunny days to sit on the 2nd floor when they open the sunroof. Awesome. I came at least once a week during my undergrad experience at Cal.
One downside: not much places to plug your laptop into (so suggest to bring it fully charged) and there is NO free wifi here. There is a connection but you have to PAY for it. Gross. You might get lucky and get a couple of bars from Caffe Strada's free wifi or airbears but its inconsistant and drops a lot.
This was a great place to study, even on a weekend.
My latte was nothing special, but the Avocado sandwich was very great! They don't skimp on the avocados. They could put less dressing on the side salad - but it's nice they add a side salad on at all.
I couldn't get my Internet to work after restarting my computer multiple times, so I wouldn't suggest relying on having internet while you're there. This place could also use some more outlets. However, for a place to meet with your study group or work alone, I'd say this place is ideal.
The tabletops of this indie café have been polished by thousands of Cal kids' resting hands and bookspines. The photon-spoiled, lofted space welcomes students by the droves; it's always bustling and buzzing with chatter no matter the time of day, and draws many a laptop so be prepared to battle for a plug.
Gourmet this is not, but it's a leap up from motor oil and the staff's cheery enough. After a quick bite, it seemed to me that the people eat there because it's available, and to justify taking up space.
Considering going back to the books but don't know if you can handle the student world again? If you can stand it here for a few hours without wanting to smack someone, you're well on your way to success.
This is only for the Cafe Au Lait.
oh my god, it was so perfectly made, and it was exactly what I needed. They put a lot of care into how it was made even though it was only $2.25 and to-go. The foam was perfect, and the ratio of coffee:milk was as it should be.
Can't vouch for anything else though.
Currently sitting here doing my Yelp reviews with my Mocha Bianca!
I just have to say this place has given me a love for Cafe's. It's like a small mom and pop shop with great workers. The place is fairly large and I come here to study/chill all the time with the nice classical music playing in the background. It's just something about cafe's now that makes life so relaxing.
I keep telling my friends that if I were to ever go anywhere in the world I will always make an effort to come back here and get a dose of my Mocha Bianca. Why is that? They make the foam just right (I have tried so many different places and it is just not the same). The foam is fluffy and fresh giving the coffee that extra oomph. If you get the right barista he will make a little picture with the foam which is one of the first places around Berkeley that I have seen done this. Not only that, but the coffee is strong even though the drink is sweet, so you know it's not just filled with sugar (ahem like Starbucks).
Milano is right next to campus so I always relied on it for a nice warm cream cheese bagel and a mocha bianca. =)
Perks: Free WiFi, nice large windows to gaze out of, second floor with an open ceiling providing plenty of light, has food along with all their coffee and pastries.
A really average place serving your average sandwich.
I remember having to drink 2 cups of water because the sandwich was on the dry side and the salad dressing was really sour. The flies in the store were a distraction, killing the peaceful setting of the calm music they had playing.
Like Strada, many people come here to study and do work. Or they just like having people look at them do work. Either way, good coffee and good sandwiches gives this cafe a classy feel that I would entertain because it's closer than FSM and safer than Strada. However, I still can't figure out whose idea it was to serve hot coffee in a pint glass.
The good: Big, open space and lots of seating.
The bad: No wifi and the milk in my cappuccino was burned.
This place is good for a quick caffeine boost, but if you want a place with full flavored espresso and talented baristas that take their job as an art form, skip it.
I dig their 2nd floor loft, multi-colored year-round Christmas lights, & their high ceilings.. I remember them having huge paintings on their brick walls but they took em down =(
The ambiance of this place gives you a sense of comfort & security, but the hustle & bustle of students studying makes this place really packed & loud.. The couple times I've been here, I tend to peer out their huge windows & people watch as Urban & American Apparel shoppers stroll by..
I've tried their tuna sandwich on Mexican roll which was nothing special, I should've ordered it on Foccacia bread! & the side salad that comes with it is the suck.. Their coffee was so so which was unfortunate but their croissants are the shniz!
The place isn't very clean but their staff is real chill.. It's a good spot to come study & relax especially if you're a Cal student, but definitely not someplace to feed an empty stomach
I know iced tea isn't the greatest thing ever created, but man, thumbs up to the one Milano makes. Nothing beats having a cold glass of iced tea while a nice breeze comes through. Makes studying for finals kinda peaceful.
The service is awesome as well. I wanted to add avocados to my sandwich yesterday but after the guy at the front told me it'd cost me $1.25, I told him to forget it (not in a mean way!) He said "it's okay this time" and ended up making my sandwich and me very happy by adding avocados at no extra charge.
It probably won't happen again, but iced tea + nice seat by the open door area + delicious sandwich with free avocados = happy Jane.
If you're into early morning coffee and taking some time to gather your wits before you head off to school or work, this is a good place for that, because during down seasons (like summer or winter break), Milano's still opens early in the morning. And they have tasty croissants and bran muffins that are killer if you ask them to toast it for you.
However, sometimes in the early morning or right before closing, they blast the Mexican radio, so it would be advisable to bring your own music+headphones if that happens. The rest of the day though they play classical music, which is great.
There's also a lot of space, and the servers are swift. However, the ever-crucial outlets are in short-supply here.
So, all-in-all, a nice cafe that adds to the overall selection of cafes in Berkeley. Has its pros and cons, so giving it a nice, solid, middle-of-the-road 3 star. You won't be disappointed if you decide to chill or study here, for sure - especially if your other favorite cafe is packed or not even open.
Sure, there are a few clouds of flies in various areas you have to walk through, but that's not a shock what with the open roof and windows.
On that note, I love the look and feel of this place. It looks almost like an outside cafe in a garden, except with most of a ceiling. Anyone know what they do when it rains? As much as I loved being able to see the clear blue sky overhead, it seems like it'd be a pain then... although I guess it doesn't rain much here. (This would never fly back home in Chicago!)
I only had an iced coffee (ordered a large, charged for a medium, woo!), but it was just what I needed. This was a great place to read, and I'll definitely be back soon with a new book and order a sandwich.
Ever since I heard a certain former favorite Cafe of mine in the area was infested with rats and cockroachies, I've stayed away. As a result, I have sought refuge at Cafe Milano.
Great place, good food, good service, what more can one ask for? There's plenty of room for people to sit: either on the first floor, or on the second, the latter having an open roof/skylight for people to enjoy on warm sunny days. Though I have to wonder, what do they do about the lack of roof when it rains??? The people who frequent this place are cool too, students studying, folks chatting, or lunch goers like moi!
The employees who work here are for the most part great. Today I got a free agua fresca watermelon with my sandwich order. It includes fresh pieces of watermelon, not too sugary and hit the spot! My recs for what to order: Hot Chicken Sandwich and Italian Salad (I always add chicken and minus the garbanzo beans to mine. Not a fan of garbanzo beans). As a cafe staple, their bran muffins are huge!
Prices aren't too shabby either. Another recommended Berkeley lunch spot!
Hey, not too bad! Bike parking nearby, nice high ceilings inside, and typical Espresso Roma fare. If you aren't familiar with typical Espresso Roma, all you need to know is that it's good and that it's not overpriced.
Plenty of seating on two levels inside. There was a sign indicating they have WiFi but I didn't use it.
If you need an indoor cafe to study at on southside, this is the place to go. I like sitting upstairs because it tends to be a little quieter than downstairs. There are very little outlets so if you need your laptop, be sure to bring a surge protector so more people can use a particular outlet.
I've gotten salads here before because I got hungry while studying, not because I came here solely for the food. I thought the salads were fresh and decently tasty. I've tried their poppyseed dressing but I think I'm allergic to something in it? My throat became raspy and it felt hard to breathe?? I switched my dressing for a vinegarette without any questions asked and ate the salad without a problem!
One thing that absolutely grosses me out about this place is their fly/insect problem. There's always those big fat black flies that fly around in circles in the open common area during warm weather. They're sooo grosss!!!
Milano fulfills two of the three requirements for a good study place for students.
+ Lotsa' tables, decent sized too!
+ Decent food, drinks and snacks
Still missing some goodies...
- NO WI-FI, WTF!?
- Unless for the 2-3 outlets upstairs, downstairs is void of any (unless you use the x-mas lights)
- Can't they stay open later?
Final Call:
Better than Strada and for Southsiders, this is a good bet for those that want to study into the early eve.
Cafe Milano in my life has served as mostly the place where I meet GSIs during their office hours here or where I meet up with groups and clubs I am a part of. The big tables up stairs are great for big groups and afford enough privacy to be able to talk about club business yet intimate enough to make the time pass while planning lesson plans for 2nd graders with other energy starved students.
In terms of food, I recommend the bagel sandwiches and washing it down with a yummy soy chai latte.
Seriously, I love this place. There is no place or drink or name or anything that sums up my college experience than MILANO.
I love how it is so difficult to see the name of the place, so when you have a friend who is visiting or new to berkeley it is kind of hard to tell them to meet you there. Then they come, then they love it. Milano isn't overpriced, their drinks are pretty good and the sandwiches are great (the chicken sandwich - highly recommended). I miss my mocha biancas from this place! The staff are friendly (especially the guy with the mullet - that guy is bawws) - if you're looking over at the cake at night before they close sometimes they just give it to you. And the guy with the mullet always draws smiley faces in your coffee.
The place has two levels and always plays good music. It's a great place to eat, meet or study. In the summer they open the front windows/doors and the whole place becomes very breezy. If you sit close enough to the front you can get air bears (otherwise you have to pay for wi fi).
Berkeley has a lot of great cafes, but all of them fall short for some reason. Strada's outdoor seating is nice when the whether is good, but sucks if it is raining, and aucouqlette (sp?) is really overpriced and has no outlets for your laptop. In all ways, Milano's is the best cafe in Berkeley.
I spent almost my whole life in Milan..so I had to go in a place called Cafe' Milano... right? I was attracted by the location... and I found a very good, fresh and cheap lunch...
too good too fresh and of course too cheap in comparison with Milan... and this is cool!!!
good job gold star for u!
I like this Cafe very much. However, the Wifi connection is terrible! It takes forever to connect and it's super slow. I wonder when they are going to fix that. I don't recommend going there, if you need internet. Also, a bit too noisy, and crowded if you plan on quiet studying. But overall good. I almost forgot, the guy working there makes happy faces and nice pictures on the drinks!
I first visited this establishment in 1992, I was a freshman in college and venture in to study and grab a cup of joe. I fell in love with it immediately. Its just what I imagine a cafe to be. You have students studying, people discussin politics/current events, people playing chess, listening to music, drawing, reading......a little bit of everything. A great place to people watch....and have a good cup of coffee. I am a coffee-snob so I only drink espresso and black coffee. They are similar to Italian roast and stuff you get in Italy. I can't say anything about the other versions. The only thing, I said is the bathroom is disgusting, but so is every other one in Berkeley....but I haven't been there in years.
Big thick and fat gangsta homemade bread meets a mound of meat, cheese, and all the fixings. How could you go wrong with their gangsta sandwiches? You just cant.
Now not only is this place infamous for serving up a hearty sandwich. They also happen to have one of the most insane salads out there. I mean you could finish these things but you probably are hurting. And that from a Salad of all things! Just imagine what the sandwiches will do to you.
This is how my trip to this place usually ends. I eat way to much good food, fresh food at that, and I usually end up sitting on the sidewalk, back to a wall of one of the local telegraph shops, and napping. Only to wake up with a few pennies, a quarter, and the occasional gutter punk sitting next to me eating the left overs I could not finish.
FOOD COMA...
Cafe Milano is a decent place to have coffee and a nosh, and at a still reasonable price. It's also a good place to study and otherwise hang out with friends. This time around, Gayle and I stopped in as we were finishing up another wedding venue exploratory expedition. I was also looking for a Sather Gate parking validation, of which they looked at me like I was a brother from another planet. At least they still make a very good latte.
Oh, Milano! Why so dirty? The number of places near campus that get away with this level of dirtiness never ceases to amaze me. Good for a coffee to go, but can't stomach anything more from this filthy spot.
I come here once or twice a week to get coffee and have a chat with a friend. This is a coffee spot in Berkeley that takes credit card WHILE being reasonably priced. My impressions:
Drip coffee - Tastes like coffee rather than straight bitter. Take that, Starbucks...
Lattes/Cappuccinos - Pretty average, I generally prefer Cafe Strada down the street since they have some crazy milk steamer that makes perfect foam. However, if you don't order to-go they like to do some latte art (actually, probably just syrup). More likely if you're a pretty girl - my friend got a picture which she insists were a pair of nipples, but all I saw was a smiley face.......
Caramella/Mocha Bianca - Do you like sugar?
Hot Chocolate - This one's just awesome. Moreso if you like dark chocolate. Good for when it's cold out and you don't need a caffeine fix.
All in all, it's a good spot to hang out. I don't know why people come here to study what with the lack of outlets and wireless internet.
Reading a book at this cafe, you can also enjoy a whispering preach from a "enlightenist" stranger...only in Berkeley.
I have so many great memories at Cafe Milano during my undergraduate years at Cal.
1. Studying countless hours upstairs for a midterm or final
2. Thinking of and writing sketches with my sketch partner for jericho! Improv
3. Overhearing interesting conversations from the colorful group of people who often hung out at the cafe
4. Complaining about the music that played with my friend
5. Hearing my dad squeal in delight after he had the chicken sandwich for the first time -
About that. My dad is obsessed with Cafe Milano's chicken sandwich. If I ever came home, first thing he demanded was that I bring along with the chicken sandwich. Whenever he visited, no other restaurants would be even be considered for food. He'd pick the sandwich over a free meal at Chez Panisse. He'd pick the sandwich over my mom.
The food is delicious - great salads, great sandwiches (clearly). The drinks are so-so - the mochas, what I generally ordered, had good and bad days. Regardless, Cafe Milano is a wonderful cafe and a very "Berkeley" place to go
Negative point - no free wifi and shady with AirBears.
I absolutely love this coffee shop. I'm picky about my morning chai and croissant. One day my usual place had a line out the door so I sped over to Cafe Milano on my way to work. The chai was better than my usual and the quality and variety of croissants was definitely better!
So, Cafe Milano is my new favorite place. Every morning I have a large chai and yummy croissant.
Also, I really like how friendly the people are in the cafe. The man behind the register (I need to find out his name) is soo nice! I really like this place a lot.
This place only gets 3 stars because the building is cool, though I've been here at least once a week for the last few years, but only with the intent of studying. For the student intent on cramming, and not so concerned about products, here's what to know:
Wifi: The only strong signal requires you to pay. If you're lucky and near the front you might get AirBears. Sometimes there's another open network, but don't come here to watch YouTube or do anything more bandwidth intensive than Wikipedia.
Outlets: There are a few, but they never seem to be plentiful enough.
Good for group work/meetings
I've had countless drinks, tons of pastries, a number of sandwiches, and a few salads. Here's a breakdown:
Coffee: You better like sugar and cream, cuz this stuff is strong. And by strong, I don't mean good, I mean stomach-acid strong.
Espresso [based drinks]: I'm not sure whether the coffee or espresso is worse. I don't know why I continue to get lattes (don't dare get anything less diluted) when good espresso can be found at the Med on Telegraph
Pastries: Pretty standard medium/low quality Berkeley fare. Not to say that I don't get the occasional chocolate croissant or blueberry muffin, but none are spectacular.
Sandwiches/Salads: I haven't had them in a while, so I don't wanna review them, but I can say that I have good memories of them (...though the sandwiches are by no means large).
Employees: Either very nice, or very rude, though almost always sexist. Just watch the girl in front of you get a smily face drawn on her latte with chocolate syrup, only to be followed by gross stares as she leaves the register. I don't feel this should be included in reviews (as this happens everywhere to an extent) but this place just does it all too consistently and blatantly.
Summary: If you're not here for something school related, or aren't in love with one of their sandwiches (as a friend is) avoid this place. If you've got a long evening of studying ahead of you though, this place can be just right.
Um... I like the design of the building. I like that they are across the street from campus. I also like their coffee.
I do not like that coffee served in glasses that are meant for beer. I do not like food that hides its blandness under a pound of focaccia. And I do not like studying without a laptop, which I am forced to do here because there are hardly any plugs and it's impossible to get a wifi signal.
I understand that the location must be really convenient for students and the open lobby must be great for studying but I still believe that the rating for this place is a bit inflated.
I gave this place a two out of five stars for the following reasons:
Atmosphere: Again, I loved the open lobby and mom and pop atmosphere this place had. However, the chairs were definitely low quality and the tables were not that great in quality either. I think that if the owners of the cafe installed some comfortable seating (like couches) alongside the walls and replaced the tables, you'd find people spending an entire DAY here not just a few minutes. The majority of this place's customer base are students and should be catered to them. Therefore, Cafe Milano needs better seating and better tables for studying.
Now, the product:
I've come here to order at least four times and have had at least three different types of drinks.
Caramella: Out of all the different types of lattes out there caramel is definitely my favorite. I ordered a 20 oz. the first time I came to Cafe Milano and it was average. I wasn't paying much attention to how the drink was being made but I can say the end product's espresso was a bit weak, the milk definitely re-steamed not fresh, and the foam's quality was average. Aesthetically, this latte looked like a basic latte you'd find maybe at Starbucks (maybe not as bubbly). The second time I came, I ordered the same drink and definitely payed attention to how the drink was being made. The barista there definitely did not keep his equipment clean. I watched him pull the portafilter out of the grouphead, dump the grinds and refill the portafilter without washing it beforehand. Even worse: he did not tamp the espresso inside the portafilter. This is probably why the espresso looked and tasted watered down, even the generous amount of caramel syrup he put into the drink couldn't hide the fact that the espresso inside my latte was weak. My second problem was the steamed milk. I clearly watched him make a drink before mine and use the same pitcher with the same unpurged and uncleaned steam wand, REheat the same milk and use it for my caramella. This is an absolute NO.
The second drink I've had here is the Mocha Bianca (white mocha), and the problems were the same. Barista training in this store is at an absolute minimum.
The third drink I've had here is the Cafe au Lait. Not a lot can go wrong with steamed milk and coffee, but I really wish the barista would have put some effort into the foam. WAY too bubbly. Again, did not purge or clean the steam wand. SIGH
All in all, this cafe is probably suitable for students who really just need something to keep them awake while studying. I do not recommend paying $3.40 for a handmade drink here unless you really are looking for a quick fix. For those coffee drinkers who know what I'm talking about I do not recommend anything but normal black coffee here.
Definitely what a cafe should be! I love the feel of Milano and could easily lose an hour just drinking coffee and eating sandwiches with a couple of friends. Such a chill place to be--other people are studying, reading newspapers, chatting with friends, playing chess, or doodling. Great place to meet up with classmates. Just remember to tell them it's next to Jamba Juice because I don't believe there is a sign...
I didn't even venture into the cafe until two years into college, but ever since, I occasionally return to pick up and sandwich and coffee (I love their mocha biancas!). Ahah, I actually went today. Recommended for a lunch with buddies :)
Down sides: No wifi (or really poor) and bathroom seems shady.
Came here to grab a cup of ice tea with some out of town visitors. After charging me for a large cup, they carelessly handed me a small. They weren't busy at the time so it was disappointing to see their lack of reaction when I asked about the error. Besides the point, this cafe provides a good space for studying where tables are plentiful on both floors. I also saw formations of study groups and office hours being held by graduate student instructors who made good use of the space to inspire intellectual conversations. Located at the tip of south campus, the ambiance is shape by students who very much view this cafe as a fabric of their campus life. Given my experience with the service, I don't think I'll be going back unless I have a meeting scheduled there.
I'm currently sitting the cafe by its large beautiful windows. It's a great place to people watch. Mostly college students and hipsters, since it's between teh American Apparel and the Urban Outfitters along Bancroft. Nevertheless, very interesting. I just saw a kid with a Carrot Top-esque red afro.
I come here every now and then. Their assortments of coffees and teas aren't anything memorable, but there are always plenty of places to sit. The inside is like an indoor/outdoor cafe. There are high ceilings (high enough to fit a small tree) and a lofted area. I'm also surprised to see that AirBearsBeyond wireless network reaches out here. It is most memorable for the cheesy music. I am currently listening to the flute rendition of "I Just Called to Say I Love You."
With two floors, this café is spacious, airy, and vaguely charming in a haphazard way. It also has a ridiculously convenient location and a reasonably good tasting hot chicken sandwich. But I think those are where the plusses end. It has very few power outlets and despite being across the street from campus, it receives very weak AirBears reception making Internet usage an unlikely possibility - perhaps that's a good thing?
